Enhancing Plastic Recycling Through Nano-Scale Structure Analysis in Custom Block Copolymer Filaments (Rev.1)

As plastic production continues to increase, new methods to combat plastic waste are needed. This paper explores upcycling, a way to increase the utility or value of waste plastic. This can be done using block copolymers as compatibilizers. Block copolymers are made of two immiscible polymer blocks that phase separate on the nanoscale, forming small structures. The orientation of these nano-scale structures influences mechanical properties, and we show that orientation can be controlled by directional 3D (three dimensional) printing. Using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), we analyze block copolymer filaments extruded at varying speeds. The SAXS data provide a baseline understanding of nano-scale structure in these unique filaments for future use in 3D printing experiments.

Customization for Current Market Applications of the Carbon Nanotubes Produced by PNNL’s Regenerable Catalytic Pyrolysis (ReCaP) for Scaled Hydrogen Production

Here, we demonstrated the Regenerative Catalytic Pyrolysis (ReCaP) process that generates carbon dioxide-free hydrogen (CO 2 -free H 2 ) from inexpensive and domestically abundant natural gas (NG), while simultaneously producing H 2 at net production cost of $1.0/kg through the sale of valuable carbon nanotube (CNT) co-product. The specific goal of this project is to 1) scale up the production of CNT, 2) correlate the properties of the CNT with the reaction conditions, 3) perform a techno-economic analysis to obtain minimum selling price of H 2 and CNT, and 4) identify industrial partners interested in the CNT co-product.

Automated Luminaire Design and Local Manufacturing for Highly Efficient, Customized Lighting Solutions

In response to the growing demand for tailorable and energy-efficient lighting solutions, Eaton and partners Synopsys and Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute were funded to develop an automated luminaire design method that was capable of achieving best in class efficiency while being locally manufactured at an affordable cost. This program was broken into four key technology areas, automated optics design, additively manufactured optical material characterization, printed electronics, and additively manufactured mechanical components.

GADRAS-DRF Enhancements for Safeguards – Custom Peak Fitting to Enhance Model Fitting and Isotopics

One major software update was accomplished within the Gamma Detector Response and Analysis Software-Detector Response Function (GADRAS-DRF) package. This update allows users to adjust individual peak fits for use in subsequent analysis processes within GADRAS-DRF. A graphical user interface (GUI) was implemented so users can see the effect of their fit adjustments on the spectrum. This new feature will enhance the capability of the previously funded auto-enrichment and peak-based 1D model fit feature that was implemented in FY23 (Fiscal Year). Isotopic analysis was performed using M400 data obtained from uranium standards and the isotopic assessment is given with and without manual peak adjustments.
