Solid-state rigid-rod polymer composite electrolytes with nanocrystalline lithium ion pathways

A critical challenge for next-generation lithium-based batteries lies in development of electrolytes that enable thermal safety along with use of high-energy-density electrodes. We describe molecular ionic composite (MIC) electrolytes based on an aligned liquid crystalline polymer combined with ionic liquids and concentrated Li salt. This high strength (200 MPa) and non-flammable solid electrolyte possesses outstanding Li + conductivity (1 mS cm -1 at 25 °C) and electrochemical stability (5.6 V vs Li|Li + ) while suppressing dendrite growth and exhibiting low interfacial resistance (32 Ω cm 2 ) and overpotentials (≤ 120 mV @ 1 mA cm -2 ) during Li symmetric cell cycling. A heterogeneous salt doping process modifies a locally ordered polymer-ion assembly to incorporate an inter-grain network filled with defective LiFSI & LiBF 4 nanocrystals, strongly enhancing Li + conduction. Furthermore, this modular material fabrication platform shows promise for safe and high-energy-density energy storage and conversion applications, incorporating the fast transport of ceramic-like conductors with the superior flexibility of polymer electrolytes.

Sulfur Solutions: Advancing High Voltage and High Energy Lithium Batteries with Organosulfur Electrolytes

Achieving energy densities exceeding 350 Wh kg -1 while operating at elevated voltages (>4.5 V vs Li/Li + ) is attainable through judicious selection of electrochemical pairs at the cathode and anode. However, current state-of-the-art electrolytes exhibit limited stability when exposed to systems operating at or above 4.3 V. This limitation contributes to the degradation of electrode materials and raises critical safety concerns, impeding the commercialization of such systems. Consequently, there has been a notable surge in research efforts aimed at developing innovative electrolyte compositions capable of supporting high-voltage lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). A substantial portion of this research has focused on the family of organosulfur molecules, which possess high oxidative stability. Organosulfur salts also facilitate the formation of dense, ionically conductive solid electrolyte interfaces (SEI) and demonstrate excellent solubility. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the field of organosulfur electrolyte components for their applications in energy storage, encompassing solvents, alternative conducting salts, and additives. It emphasizes the idea that the deliberate design of electrolyte compositions is instrumental in controlling electrode passivation, with organosulfur-based structures historically proving advantageous in every aspect of the electrolyte. Crucially, it should be noted that many of these components are commercially available, holding significant implications for industrial applications.

Oxygen and iron production by electrolytic smelting of lunar soil

Oxygen, present in abundance in nearly all lunar materials, can theoretically be extracted by molten silicate electrolysis from any known lunar rock. Derivation of oxygen by this method has been amply demonstrated experimentally in silicate melts of a variety of compositions. This work can be divided into three categories: (1) measurement of solubilities of metals (atomic) in silicate melts; (2) electrolysis experiments under various conditions of temperature, container material, electrode configuration, current density, melt composition, and sample mass (100 to 2000 mg) measuring energy required and character of resulting products; and (3) theoretical assessment of compositional requirements for steady state operations of an electrolysis cell.

Proximity Ferroelectricity in Compositionally Graded Structures

Proximity ferroelectricity is a novel paradigm for inducing ferroelectricity in a non-ferroelectric polar material, such as AlN or ZnO that are typically unswitchable with an external field below their dielectric breakdown field. When placed in direct contact with a thin switchable ferroelectric layer (such as Al 1-x Sc x N or Zn 1-x Mg x O), they become a practically switchable ferroelectric. Using the thermodynamic Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire theory, in this work, we perform the finite element modeling of the polarization switching in the compositionally graded AlN-Al 1-x Sc x N, ZnO-Zn 1-x Mg x O, and MgO-Zn 1-x Mg x O structures sandwiched in both a parallel-plate capacitor geometry as well as in a sharp probe-planar electrode geometry. We reveal that the compositionally graded structure allows the simultaneous switching of spontaneous polarization in the whole system by a coercive field significantly lower than the electric breakdown field of unswitchable polar materials. The physical mechanism is the depolarization electric field determined by the gradient of chemical composition “x”. The field lowers the steepness of the switching barrier in the otherwise unswitchable parts of the compositionally graded AlN-Al 1-x Sc x N and ZnO-Zn 1-x Mg x O structures. In the MgO-like regions of the compositionally graded MgO-Zn 1-x Mg x O structure, a shallow double-well free energy potential emerges. Proximity ferroelectric switching of the compositionally graded structures placed in the probe-electrode geometry occurs due to nanodomain formation under the tip. We predict that a gradient of chemical composition “x” significantly lowers effective coercive fields of the compositionally graded AlN-Al 1-x Sc x N and ZnO-Zn 1-x Mg x O structures compared to the coercive fields of the corresponding multilayers with a uniform chemical composition in each layer. A tip-induced switching further lowers the coercive field, enabling control of ferroelectric domains in otherwise unswitchable compositionally graded structures, which can provide nanoscale domain control for memory, actuation, sensing, and optical applications.

Large-Area Lithium Electrode Sub-Assemblies (LESAs) Protected by Self Forming Microstructured Polymer-Inorganic Single-Ion Conducting Composites (Final Report)

The aim of this project is to realize a low-cost, safe, reversible, high-areal capacity lithium metal electrode though the use of scalable, low-cost Lithium Electrode Sub-Assembly (LESA). At its core, the LESA applies novel polymer scaffolds to nanostructure inorganic ionic materials into high-conductivity composites that stabilize lithium anodes during high-rate, high-capacity cycling in lithium metal batteries. Fundamental investigations from this project identified a newly defined region of stability for composites with respect to the shear modulus and lithium molar volume ratio which have been broadly applied in the scientific literature for a multitude of different systems. The advancements achieved in this field have furthered the fundamental understanding of lithium metal electrode chemistry and degradation mechanisms and resulted in a lithium metal anode with improved cycle life.

Achieving high rate performance in hybrid pristine-recycled cathodes using model-informed electrode designs

Direct recycling lithium-ion battery cathodes, a process that retains the engineered oxide structures from end-of-life materials, presents a cost-effective and energy-efficient alternative to other battery recycling methods. However, while direct-recycled cathodes have demonstrated performance comparable to that of pristine materials at low cycling rates, their high-rate performance remains uncertain. Morphology changes in cathode particles, a main mode of degradation, directly impact rate performance by limiting surface kinetics and solid-phase diffusion. If direct recycling processes do not sufficiently restore pristine-like morphologies, the recycled materials may retain structural defects that hinder high-rate performance. The present work uses a physics-based pseudo-2D model to simulate hybrid electrodes with pristine and artificially “aged/recycled” NMC materials to investigate potential impacts of incorporating performance-limited aged cathode materials into cells. The study highlights how differences in transport and kinetic properties can influence rate capabilities in mixed electrodes — particularly in high-loading cells in high-demand applications. However, model results also reveal a possible mitigation strategy via dual-layer electrode architectures with lower-performing materials positioned near the current collector. Simulations of 4.0 mAh cm −2 cells cycled at 4C using a dual-layer architecture provided approximately 5%–30% more capacity in constant-current protocols compared to homogeneously blended electrode architectures with the same loadings and mixed-material compositions. These findings highlight the importance of strategic electrode design in minimizing potential performance losses and facilitating the integration of recycled materials into high-performance batteries, advancing sustainable and cost-effective battery manufacturing.

The electrochemical performance of composite rare-earth nickelate-rare-earth doped ceria oxygen electrodes, with a high level of rare-earth doping in ceria are reported. Additionally, the chemical stability of these compositions is reported at both the sintering (1240 ?C) and operating temperature (800 ?C). Specifically, a lanthanum nickelate La2NiO4+d (LNO) ?? 50 mol% lanthanum doped ceria (LDC50) oxygen electrode and a neodymium nickelate Nd2NiO4+d (NNO) ?? 50 mol% neodymium doped ceria (NDC50) oxygen electrode are tested in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) modes and compared to a composite (La0.75Sr0.25)0.95MnO3±d (LSM)-8 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrode. The LNO–LDC50 oxygen electrode reaches a current density which is approximately three times that of the LSM-YSZ electrode in SOFC mode at 0.7 V and approximately two times the LSM-YSZ electrode at 1.2 V in SOEC mode. Similarly the NNONDC50 oxygen electrode reaches a current density which is approximately two times and approximately one and a half times that of LSM-YSZ at 0.7 V and 1.2 V respectively. Oxygen surface exchange results for LNO and NNO are also reported which show different oxygen exchange kinetics during oxidation versus reduction steps.

High-Spatial-Resolution Quantitative Chemomechanical Mapping of Organic Composite Cathodes for Sulfide-Based Solid-State Batteries

Understanding the chemo-mechanical behaviors of electrodes, particularly at the electrode/electrolyte interfaces, is critical for improving the performance of all-solid-state batteries. However, due to the instability of electrolyte materials under ambient conditions, such characterizations are challenging, particularly for sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries. Herein, by combining time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) and in-SEM nanoindentation measurements, a systematic quantitative investigation of the chemo-mechanical behaviors of pyrene-4,5,9,10-tetraone (PTO) /Li 6 PS 5 Cl composite cathodes is carried out. Chemical and quantitative mechanical information of the composite cathode were collected with high spatial resolution after developing and implementing an air-free characterization protocol. By directly connecting the Young’s modulus and hardness with the Li distribution in the composite cathode, a comprehensive chemo-mechanical mapping of the PTO/ Li 6 PS 5 Cl composite cathode has been established. Furthermore, this work improves our knowledge of the critical chemo-mechanical phenomena that occur at the cathode/electrolyte interfaces in all-solid-state batteries.

Multiscale Cryo Electron Microscopy Reveals Interfacial Degradation and Stabilization in Battery Electrodes

Electrochemical interfaces are dynamic systems, evolving based on their local environment and reactant surface structures. The electrode-electrolyte interface in Li-ion batteries can be protective, limiting parasitic reactions with the electrolyte to passivate the surface [1]. Additionally, this interphase has an impact on the Li-ion transport through that layer based on its composition, bonding environment, and thickness. These parameters are challenging to collect and may vary depending on the electrode surface site investigated relative to its spatial position in a coin cell. This study will detail a multiscale cryogenic electron microscopy approach where millimeter-scale cross-sections through the coin cell batteries were made using a cryogenic stage within a fs-laser plasma focused ion beam (laser PFIB) with complementary energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy able to detect variations in the composition at electrode interfaces [2]. Microscale cross-sectioning and lamella sample preparation of battery electrodes was conducted at the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies using a Ga-ion focused ion beam (FIB) with air-free and cryo-transfer [3], followed by nanoscale mapping of composition and bonding within the CEI through cryo-scanning transmission electron microscopy (cryo-STEM) electron energy loss spectroscopy [4]. This multiscale approach enabled identification of millimeter-scale features of a battery stack with visualization of degradation in electrodes such as cracks in cathode particles, gas evolution, and SEI evolution; microscale interfacial characteristics, such as heterogeneity in the SEI or barrier layer and identification of electrolyte networks to the electrode surfaces; and nanoscale measurement of the CEI thickness, mapping of transition metal bonding within the cathode particles to identify loss of active materials, and identification of beneficial electrolyte additives incorporated into the CEI structure. This multiscale approach allows for a statistical understanding of the primary mechanisms and parasitic degradation pathways that impact performance by limiting the ion transport pathways within Li+ batteries.

Use of carbon electrodes to reduce mobile ion concentration and improve reliability of metal halide perovskite photovoltaics

Ion migration is one of the prime reasons for the rapid degradation of metal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and we report on a method for quantifying mobile ion concentration (No) using a transient dark current measurement. We perform both ex-situ and in-situ measurements on PSCs and study the evolution of No in films and devices under a range of temperatures. We also study the effect of device architecture, top electrode chemistry, and metal halide perovskite composition and dimensionality on No. Two-dimensional perovskites are shown to reduce the ion concentration along with inert C electrodes that do not react with halides by ~99% while also improving mechanical reliability by ~250%. We believe this work can provide design guidelines for the development of stable PSCs through the lens of minimizing mobile ions and their evolution over time under operational conditions.

Vanadium and Niobium MXenes—Bilayered V 2 O 5 Asymmetric Supercapacitors

MXenes offer high metallic conductivity and redox capacitance that are attractive for high-power, high-energy storage devices. However, they operate limitedly under high anodic potentials due to irreversible oxidation. Pairing them with oxides to design asymmetric supercapacitors may expand the voltage window and increase the energy storage capabilities. Hydrated lithium preintercalated bilayered V 2 O 5 ( δ-Li x V 2 O 5 ·nH 2 O) is attractive for aqueous energy storage due to its high Li capacity at high potentials; however, its poor cyclability remains a challenge. To overcome its limitations and achieve a wide voltage window and excellent cyclability, it is combined with V 2 C and Nb 4 C 3 MXenes. Asymmetric supercapacitors employing lithium intercalated V 2 C (Li-V 2 C) or tetramethylammonium intercalated Nb 4 C 3 (TMA-Nb 4 C 3 ) MXenes as the negative electrode, and a δ-Li x V 2 O 5 ·nH 2 O composite with carbon nanotubes as the positive electrode in 5 m LiCl electrolyte operate over wide voltage windows of 2 and 1.6 V, respectively. The latter shows remarkably high cyclability—capacitance retention of ≈95% after 10 000 cycles. Here, this work highlights the importance of selecting appropriate MXenes to achieve a wide voltage window and a long cycle life in combination with oxide anodes to demonstrate the potential of MXenes beyond Ti 3 C 2 in energy storage.

Solvent-Free Melt-Processed Cathode Mitigates Li Anode Instability in Polymer-Based Solid-State Batteries

Solvent-free manufacturing of battery components is a promising alternative to traditional slurry processing for reducing the cost and environmental impact. In this work, we used twin-screw melt extrusion to fabricate a polymer-based high voltage composite cathode. The melt-processed cathode is dense (near zero porosity) and thick (65 μm) and has high active material loading (80 wt %). The active particles are distributed uniformly throughout the melt-processed cathode, unlike the traditional slurry-cast cathode, which exhibits inhomogeneous particle distribution. In the melt-processed cathode, polymer and carbon form separate phases, whereas in the slurry-cast cathode they blend into a single phase. Due to these structural differences, the melt-processed cathode shows smooth charge–discharge profiles, while the slurry-cast cathode shows noisy charging and soft-shorting behavior. In conclusion, this work highlights that twin-screw extrusion as a scalable, solvent-free manufacturing method is advantageous in producing uniform cathodes, which mitigates anode instability.

4D Printing of Stretchable Supercapacitors via Hybrid Composite Materials

Stretchable supercapacitors (SCs) have attracted significant attention in developing power-independent stretchable electronic systems due to their intrinsic energy storage function and unique mechanical properties. Most current SCs are generally limited by their low stretchability, complicated fabrication process, and insufficient performance and robustness. This study presents a facile method to fabricate arbitrary-shaped stretchable electrodes via 4D printing of conductive composite from reduced graphene oxide, carbon nanotube, and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate. The electrode patterns of an arbitrary shape can be deposited onto prestretched substrates by aerosol-jet printing, then self-organized origami (ridge) patterns are generated after releasing the substrates from holding stretchers due to the mismatched strains. The stretchable electrodes demonstrate superior mechanical robustness and stretchability without sacrificing its outstanding electrochemical performance. The symmetric SC prototype possesses a gravimetric capacitance of ≈21.7 F g -1 at a current density of 0.5 A g -1 and a capacitance retention of ≈85.8% from 0.5 to 5 A g -1 . A SC array with arbitrary-shaped electrodes is also fabricated and connected in series to power light-emitting diode patterns for large-scale applications. Finally, the proposed method paves avenues for scalable manufacturing of future energy-storage devices with controlled extensibility and high electrochemical performance.
