The Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) project now has over 18 years of an accurately observed top-of-the-atmosphere (TOA) flux record for climate monitoring and diagnostic studies. CERES provides the climate community the following parameters: coincident instantaneous 1? gridded CERES observed TOA fluxes, computed profile and surface fluxes, as well as MODIS cloud and aerosol retrievals. Clouds and radiation interaction one key factor that dominates climate feedbacks and is also the most difficult problem with large uncertainty. To further advance our understanding of the cloud-radiation interaction, the climate community need data with accurate fluxes and their associated cloud properties for both observational and modelling study. The new CERES FluxByCldTyp data product is produced for this purpose. The flux product combines for the first time CERES measured TOA fluxes along with the associated MODIS cloud properties, which links radiative flux directly to a specific cloud type. This was achieved by computing sub-footprint fluxes for the clear-sky and cloudy portions of the CERES footprint. The spatially distributed cloud properties within the CERES footprint were retrieved from 2-km MODIS pixels, that were stratified by cloud type. The sub-footprint fluxes were estimated from MODIS radiances based on empirically derived narrowband to broadband coefficients. The combined sub-footprint fluxes can then be validated with the observed footprint flux. This presentation will focus on the algorithm development of the flux-by-cloud-type product and its validation.

Objective - It is observed that 5.6% of all CERES Terra/Aqua data contains missing cloud cover information or insufficient imager data for a reliable scene identification (some times it can reach up to 50% of data for a specific scene type) - The unavailability of imager data lead to gaps in global radiation budget dataset. - In this study, our objective is to develop a Machine learning methodology for the improved determination of CERES scene type and subsequent clear-sky TOA flux estimation using standalone CERES TOA radiance measurements (without any MODIS/Imager data).

The solar radiation must be considered as the primary factor when we study the climatic system because it provides almost all energy that drives the climatic system and most atmospheric phenomena. The solar radiation at the TOA is partially transferred, transformed into other forms of energy that are eventually dissipated by the general circulation of the atmosphere and oceans, and partially used in chemical and biological processes. The absorption of solar energy in the atmosphere (Acol) plays a key role in the climate system, not only because it affects the amount of solar energy absorbed by the Earth system, but also because it changes the vertical distribution of absorbed energy, which in turn impacts surface evaporation, atmospheric convection and precipitation. To investigate Acol, we have collected the collocated satellite-surface observations over the 35 selected BSRN surface sites during the period 2000-2004. The surface radiation budgets are averaged from the BSRN Shortwave (SW) observations over a 1-hour interval centered at the time of the NASA Terra and Aqua satellites overpass, and the TOA radiation budgets are averaged from the closest FOV satellite data to the BSRN stations. Then the atmospheric column SW absorption will be inferred from the satellite TOA albedo and BSRN surface absorption (through the estimated surface albedo). Monthly means of Acol, TOA albedo, and surface absorption have been calculated under both clear- and all-sky conditions over the 35 selected BSRN sites which represent different climate regimes. To evaluate the GCM simulations, we have collected the ECHAM5-HAM simulated surface, TOA and atmospheric radiation budgets by researchers at ETH Zurich and compared those simulations with observations. The preliminary comparisons have shown that the ECHAM5 simulated clear-sky surface absorption, TOA albedo, and ACOL agree very well (1-3%) with observations. Under all-sky conditions, they have strong correlations with CERES-derived cloud fraction. The simulated surface absorption is lower and TOA albedo is higher than those under clear skies, but ACOL does not increase too much. However, there are relatively large differences over some regions and months. A further study is needed.

CERES ERBE-like Instantaneous TOA Estimates (ES-8) in HDF (CER_ES4_TRMM-PFM_Edition1)

The ERBE-like Monthly Geographical Averages (ES-4) product contains a month of space and time averaged Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The ES-4 is also produced for combinations of scanner instruments. For each observed 2.5-degree spatial region, the daily average, the hourly average over the month, and the overall monthly average of shortwave and longwave fluxes at the Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) from the CERES ES-9 product are spatially nested up from 2.5-degree regions to 5- and 10-degree regions, to 2.5-, 5-, and 10-degree zonal averages, and to global monthly averages. For each nested area, the albedo and net flux are given. For each region, the daily average flux is estimated from an algorithm that uses the available hourly data, scene identification data, and diurnal models. This algorithm is 'like' the algorithm used for the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment (ERBE). CERES ERBE-like Monthly Geographical Averages (ES-4) in HDF (CER_ES4_Aqua-FM4_Edition1)
