Composite Piezoelectric Resonator 1D Modeling with Loss

Abstract – Maximizing the benefit of applying piezoelectric materials in composite structures, which are a mix of piezoelectric and elastic elements, requires analytical modeling. In this paper we describe two main classes of resonators and how to model using network equivalent including material losses. These include extensional devices where the layer areas are parallel to the direction of wave travel as found in a variety of thickness or length mode transducers (BC. Stress T1 = T2 at boundary) and transverse mode resonators (BC. Strain S1 = S2 at boundary) where the major layer area is perpendicular to the wave direction as is found in radial mode or length thickness mode composite resonators. In order to illustrate these models we will use Mason’s equivalent circuits with elastic, dielectric and piezoelectric loss. It is noted that in order to maintain consistency with the linear equations of piezoelectricity and the wave equation care is required when applying complex loss coefficients to the models. Although these techniques are applicable to other models we use Mason’s network equivalent circuit because it is intuitive for composite modeling due to the frequency independent turns ratio and the independence of the equations describing the elastic layers from the adjoining layer properties which aids in understanding the boundary conditions to impose on the layer boundaries. We will present network models for a variety of applications with loss and show how to calculate their impedance spectra, interface stress, strain velocity and displacement spectra.

Making Complex Electrically Conductive Patterns on Cloth

A method for automated fabrication of flexible, electrically conductive patterns on cloth substrates has been demonstrated. Products developed using this method, or related prior methods, are instances of a technology known as 'e-textiles,' in which electrically conductive patterns ar formed in, and on, textiles. For many applications, including high-speed digital circuits, antennas, and radio frequency (RF) circuits, an e-textile method should be capable of providing high surface conductivity, tight tolerances for control of characteristic impedances, and geometrically complex conductive patterns. Unlike prior methods, the present method satisfies all three of these criteria. Typical patterns can include such circuit structures as RF transmission lines, antennas, filters, and other conductive patterns equivalent to those of conventional printed circuits. The present method overcomes the limitations of the prior methods for forming the equivalent of printed circuits on cloth. A typical fabrication process according to the present method involves selecting the appropriate conductive and non-conductive fabric layers to build the e-textile circuit. The present method uses commercially available woven conductive cloth with established surface conductivity specifications. Dielectric constant, loss tangent, and thickness are some of the parameters to be considered for the non-conductive fabric layers. The circuit design of the conductive woven fabric is secured onto a non-conductive fabric layer using sewing, embroidery, and/or adhesive means. The portion of the conductive fabric that is not part of the circuit is next cut from the desired circuit using an automated machine such as a printed-circuit-board milling machine or a laser cutting machine. Fiducials can be used to align the circuit and the cutting machine. Multilayer circuits can be built starting with the inner layer and using conductive thread to make electrical connections between layers.

Optical techniques to feed and control GaAs MMIC modules for phased array antenna applications

A complex signal distribution system is required to feed and control GaAs monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) for phased array antenna applications above 20 GHz. Each MMIC module will require one or more RF lines, one or more bias voltage lines, and digital lines to provide a minimum of 10 bits of combined phase and gain control information. In a closely spaced array, the routing of these multiple lines presents difficult topology problems as well as a high probability of signal interference. To overcome GaAs MMIC phased array signal distribution problems optical fibers interconnected to monolithically integrated optical components with GaAs MMIC array elements are proposed as a solution. System architecture considerations using optical fibers are described. The analog and digital optical links to respectively feed and control MMIC elements are analyzed. It is concluded that a fiber optic network will reduce weight and complexity, and increase reliability and performance, but higher power will be required.

Gate-Based Quantum Simulation of Gaussian Bosonic Circuits on Exponentially Many Modes

We introduce a framework for simulating, on an ( n + 1 )-qubit quantum computer, the action of a Gaussian bosonic (GB) circuit on a state over 2 n modes. Specifically, we encode the initial bosonic state’s expectation values over quadrature operators (and their covariance matrix) as an input qubit state. This is then evolved by a quantum circuit that effectively implements the symplectic propagators induced by the GB gates. We find families of GB circuits and initial states leading to efficient quantum simulations. For this purpose, we introduce a dictionary that maps between GB and qubit gates such that particle- (non-particle-) preserving GB gates lead to real- (imaginary-) time evolutions at the qubit level. For the special case of particle-preserving circuits, we present a bounded-error-quantum-polynomial time (BQP)-complete GB decision problem, indicating that GB evolutions of Gaussian states on exponentially many modes are as powerful as universal quantum computers. We also perform numerical simulations of an interferometer on ∼ 8 × 10 9 modes, illustrating the power of our framework. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Controller Verification of a Smart-Grid Compatible 200 kHz Single-stage Photovoltaic Microinverter

This paper presents control system design, implementation, and experimental validation of a single-stage 400 W, 200 kHz solar photovoltaic (PV) microinverter using hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and hardware testing. The selected circuit topology is based on a Gallium Nitride (GaN) direct-matrix based dual active bridge (DAB) converter with a low voltage active power decoupler (APD) circuit. Control performance is verified, smart-grid compatibility is tested, and circuit operation is confirmed. Controller HIL (CHIL) is shown to aid in a complex power electronics system design by 1) enabling detailed control development prior to hardware implementation, 2) expanding the use of automated testing, and 3) increasing confidence in control performance prior to prototype testing. Altogether, these factors make HIL a valuable tool in complex power electronic designs.

Realization of a Quantum Slide Rule for 1+1 Dimensional Quantum Field Theories Using Josephson Superconducting Circuits

We have built a special type of electronic circuit—a “superconducting quantum simulator”—that allows us to mimic the behavior of complex quantum systems that are impossible to compute with ordinary computers. Our device is a long transmission line made of thousands of tiny superconducting junctions, acting as a one-dimensional “vacuum” for microwave photons. By terminating this line with a tunable, weak Josephson junction, we can control how strongly photons interact with each other.

Measured Propagation Characteristics of Coplanar Waveguide on Semi-Insulating 4H-SiC Through 800 K

Wireless sensors for high temperature industrial applications and jet engines require RF transmission lines and RF integrated circuits (RFICs) on wide bandgap semiconductors such as SiC. In this paper, the complex propagation constant of coplanar waveguide fabricated on semiinsulating 4H-SiC has been measured through 813 K. It is shown that the attenuation increases 3.4 dB/cm at 50 GHz as the SiC temperature is increased from 300 K to 813 K. Above 500 K, the major contribution to loss is the decrease in SiC resistivity. The effective permittivity of the same line increases by approximately 5 percent at microwave frequencies and 20 percent at 1 GHz.

Escherichia coli Cas1/2 Endonuclease Complex Modifies Self-Targeting CRISPR/Cascade Spacers Reducing Silencing Guide Stability

CRISPR-based interference has become common in various applications from genetic circuits to dynamic metabolic control. In E. coli, the native CRISPR Cascade system can be utilized for silencing by deletion of the cas3 nuclease along with expression of guide RNA arrays, where multiple genes can be silenced from a single transcript. We notice the loss of spacer sequences from guide arrays utilized for dynamic silencing. Here, we report that unstable guide arrays are due to expression of the Cas1/2 endonuclease complex. We propose a model wherein basal Cas1/2 endonuclease activity results in the loss of spacers from guide arrays. Subsequently, mutant guide arrays can be amplified through selection. Replacing a constitutive promoter driving Cascade complex expression with a tightly controlled inducible promoter improves guide array stability, while minimizing leaky gene silencing. Additionally, these results demonstrate the potential of Cas1/2 mediated guide deletion as a mechanism to avoid CRISPR based autoimmunity.

An Efficient Model-based Diagnosis Engine for Hybrid Systems Using Structural Model Decomposition

Complex hybrid systems are present in a large range of engineering applications, like mechanical systems, electrical circuits, or embedded computation systems. The behavior of these systems is made up of continuous and discrete event dynamics that increase the difficulties for accurate and timely online fault diagnosis. The Hybrid Diagnosis Engine (HyDE) offers flexibility to the diagnosis application designer to choose the modeling paradigm and the reasoning algorithms. The HyDE architecture supports the use of multiple modeling paradigms at the component and system level. However, HyDE faces some problems regarding performance in terms of complexity and time. Our focus in this paper is on developing efficient model-based methodologies for online fault diagnosis in complex hybrid systems. To do this, we propose a diagnosis framework where structural model decomposition is integrated within the HyDE diagnosis framework to reduce the computational complexity associated with the fault diagnosis of hybrid systems. As a case study, we apply our approach to a diagnostic testbed, the Advanced Diagnostics and Prognostics Testbed (ADAPT), using real data.
