The Roles and Impacts of PV-Battery Hybrids in a Decarbonized U.S. Electricity Supply

In this paper, we explore the potential impacts of growing industry interest in hybrid systems comprising PV and battery technologies on the results and findings of the Solar Futures Study (DOE 2021). We employ similar scenario definitions in the same ReEDS capacity expansion model, but we perform two versions of each scenario: one in which PV and battery technologies must be deployed separately (No Hybrids), and one in which the model has the option of deploying them together as PVB hybrids (With Hybrids). By comparing the No Hybrids and With Hybrids versions of each scenario, we isolate the impacts of hybridization on the outcomes and findings of the Solar Futures Study. We find that PVB hybrid configurations capture a sizable share of PV deployment, and the highest-net-value PVB hybrid configuration depends strongly on policy conditions. A power sector decarbonization policy generally increases the value proposition of a more forward-looking PVB hybrid configuration that involves significant oversizing of the PV arrays, a larger battery (which facilitates greater recovery and utilization of otherwise clipped energy), and a higher capacity factor. The growing deployment of PVB hybrid configurations primarily displaces standalone PV capacity, such that total installed PV capacity is largely unaffected by the availability of PVB hybrid configurations. However, the higher capacity factors associated with PVB hybrid configurations drive a modest (1-2 percentage point) increase in PV's share of U.S. electricity supply in 2050. Finally, introducing the PVB hybrid configurations influences the future role and makeup of battery storage technologies, and it reduces the required transmission expansion, particularly under scenarios that involve a power sector decarbonization policy.

Transition Metal Blocking Microporous Polymer Separators for Energy-Dense and Long-Lived Li-ion Batteries

A revolution in electric-powered mobility is imminent, catalyzed by breakthroughs in Li-ion battery technology that have dramatically lowered the $/kWh price tag of electrochemical energy storage. Increases in production have also enabled greater penetration in key markets. World-wide registration of new plug-in hybrid electric and battery-only electric vehicles (PHEV and BEV) increased by 70% from 2014 to 2015, and sales of PHEVs and BEVs are predicted to be 35% of all vehicle sales by 2040, reaching 41 million units per year—a 90-fold increase from 2015.1,2 In stride with industry giants such as Tesla, EV manufacturers rely on Li-ion cell Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) for relentless improvements in Li-ion battery technology necessary to drive this bullish market penetration outlook. Advancing energy and power density is critical to alleviating EV-customer range anxiety. Furthermore, strategies to extend battery-pack life beyond 1000 cycles—particularly when operating under aggressive duty cycles—requires fresh perspectives and innovation in cell components.

Insights into the Water Transport Mechanism in Polymeric Membranes from Neutron Scattering

Polymeric membranes are ubiquitous in transport applications including gas separation, water desalination, solid-state batteries, and fuel cells. The transport mechanism in certain classes of membranes is well understood. It is generally believed that polymeric membranes used in gas separation follow the solution-diffusion model. However, the transport mechanism in other membranes such as the ones used in water desalination is less clear as both the solution-diffusion and hydrodynamic models have been proposed. In this contribution, we study the structure as well as the water and polymer dynamics of several polymeric membranes using small-angle and quasi-elastic neutron scattering. We demonstrate that on the scale of a few nanometers, water appears to diffuse through a desalination membrane at a rate comparable to bulk water, while water diffuses at a rate that is a factor of 2 slower in an anion-exchange membrane. These results illustrate the importance of studying both the structure and dynamics of membrane materials and have important implications in understanding the transport mechanisms that differentiate the different types of polymeric membranes.

Long life, rechargeable nickel-zinc battery

A production version of the inorganic separator was evaluated for improving the life of the nickel-zinc system. Nickel-zinc cells (7-10 Ah capacities) of different electrode separator configurations were constructed and tested. The nickel-zinc cells using the inorganic separator encasing the zinc electrode, the nickel electrode, or both electrodes had shorter lives than cells using Visking and cellophane separation. Cells with the inorganic separation all fell below 70% of their theoretical capacity within 30 cycles, but the cells constructed with organic separation required 80 cycles. Failure of the cells using the ceramic separator was irreversible capacity degradation due to zinc loss through cracks developed in the inorganic separator. Zinc loss through the separator was minimized with the use of combinations of the inorganic separator with Visking and cellophane. Cells using the combined separation operated 130 duty cycles before degrading to 70% of their theoretical capacity.

Accelerating Laboratory-Based, All-Solid-State Battery Research and Development: Industrially Relevant Small-Batch Dry-Processing, Small and Low-Cost Test Fixtures, and Short-Tolerant Separators

This work presents improvements to mixing (for dry-processed electrodes), separator robustness, and cell testing jigs for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). These developments combine synergistically to enable rapid research and development of ASSB catholytes. A mechanical "kneader" is designed and built which emulates the mixing and fibrillation of poly-tetrafluoroethylene binder that occurs in industrially relevant twin-screw extruders. A modest improvement in the mixing and dispersion catholyte materials is observed using micro-resolution X-ray computed tomography (X-ray CT). Catholytes are paired with an In-metal anode and separated by a novel, dual-layer, polyaramid-fiber-supported, sulfide-solid electrolyte (Li6 PS5 Cl) separator. This separator achieves high short tolerance which enabled a 95% success rate across 20 attempted cells and to date over 100 successful cells have been built. ASSBs were tested in a 2032 coin-cell format. Simultaneous cycling of a large number of cells is further enabled by a compact and low cost (~ 38 USD per jig) pressure application jig of which 100 have been constructed to date. The utility of these advances is demonstrated through a brief study on the effect cathode-side conductive carbon and current collector type has on capacity and rate performance.

Preactivated zeolite nanosheet plate-tiled membrane on porous PVDF film: Synthesis and study of proton-selective ion conduction

Preactivated MFI zeolite nanosheet plates (ZNPs) with large areas (~2.0 × 2.0 μm 2 ) and nanometer thicknesses (~60 nm) were prepared directly in liquid-dispersed state. The individual ZNP was a stack of 4-nm-thick single crystalline zeolite nanosheets (ZNs) interlinked by Si–O–Si bonds between neighboring ZN surfaces. The dispersed open-pore ZNPs allowed formulating suspensions for tiling ZNP membranes on polymer substrates without requiring post-coating activation. A pinhole-free ZNP-tiled (ZNPT) membrane has been achieved on macroporous PVDF film by a self-repairing vacuum-assisted filtration coating method. The resultant ZNPT layer was ~500 nm-thick consisting of about 7 ZNP layers with inter-ZNP width and inter-ZNP entrance porosity around 9 nm and 2%, respectively. The ZNPT-PVDF membrane exhibited high selectivity to proton transport over vanadyl ion and low resistances to proton conduction in aqueous solutions. The membrane also demonstrated to function as an efficient ion separator for the vanadium redox flow battery. The reported synthesis of preactivated ZNP suspension may overcome the major hurdle to realizing polymer-supported ZN membranes, which is the inefficiency of existing methods in obtaining readily dispersible open-pore ZNs. Finally, the ZNPT-PVDF membrane can be a more affordable and sustainable alternative to the Nafion-based ion separation membranes.

An All-Soluble Fe/Mn-Based Alkaline Redox Flow Battery System

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are membrane-separated rechargeable flow cells with redox electrolytes, offering the potential for large-scale energy storage and supporting renewable energy grids. Yet, creating a cost-effective, high-performance RFB system is challenging. In this work, we investigate an Fe/Mn RFB alkaline system based on the [(TEA)Fe–O–Fe(TEA)] 3– / 4– and MnO 4 – / 2– redox couples with a theoretical cell voltage of ~1.43 V. This combination has not been systematically studied previously, but it can lead to a very low-cost and sustainable materials for high energy storage. Constant current cycling tests were performed at ±41 mA cm –2 between 20% and 80% SOC over 800 h (400 cycles) with an apparent Coulombic efficiency (CE) approaching 100%, while the voltage efficiency (VE) gradually decreased from ~75.3% to ~61.4% due to increasing internal resistances. Finally, the voltage efficiency loss can be mitigated through a periodic acid treatment to remove MnO 2 deposits from the separator.

A stabilized large-aperture far-infrared telescope gondola

Description of a recently developed balloon-borne 1-m far-infrared telescope designed to carry out astronomical observations and to map radiation from selected areas of the sky. The telescope optical system consists of a conventional Cassegrain arrangement with an f/2 aluminum primary mirror, spherically figured, which feeds a pyrex secondary mirror to produce an f/13.8 beam at the focal plane with a scale of 15.2 arc sec/mm. Three focal planes are provided. The infrared detectors consist of an array of four gallium-doped germanium bolometers fitted within a two-liter helium dewar. An altitude-azimuth mount design is used for attitude control, with the pointing objectives being achieved in two steps. The azimuth control system is capable of operation in a position mode, in which the sensing element is a servo-driven null magnetometer always pointed north, and in an inertial mode, in which the gyro is uncaged and becomes the azimuth reference. The elevation system also operates in both position and inertial modes. An auxiliary position control, powered by an independent battery and controlled by a separate tone command system, is provided in case of a primary system difficulty.

Research and development of a versatile portable speech prosthesis

The Versatile Portable Speech Prosthesis (VPSP), a synthetic speech output communication aid for non-speaking people is described. It was intended initially for severely physically limited people with cerebral palsy who are in electric wheelchairs. Hence, it was designed to be placed on a wheelchair and powered from a wheelchair battery. It can easily be separated from the wheelchair. The VPSP is versatile because it is designed to accept any means of single switch, multiple switch, or keyboard control which physically limited people have the ability to use. It is portable because it is mounted on and can go with the electric wheelchair. It is a speech prosthesis, obviously, because it speaks with a synthetic voice for people unable to speak with their own voices. Both hardware and software are described.

Fabrication of films and coatings used to activate shear thickening, impact resistant electrolytes

A method of making a passively impact resistant composite electrolyte and separator layer includes providing a suspension composition including electrically non-conducting particles that enable shear thickening. The particles can have a polydispersity index of no greater than 0.1, an average particle size in a range of from 50 nm to 1 um, and an absolute zeta potential of greater than ±40 mV. A particle suspension solvent is provided for suspending the particles. The suspension composition is applied to a porous separator material. A portion of the particles and suspension solvent penetrate the pores and the remainder of the particles in the suspension composition are distributed across the surface of the separator material. The suspension solvent is evaporated from the separator material to provide a shear thickening particle loaded separator. A separator assembly and a passivated battery are also disclosed.

Optimizing the Fabrication of Electrospun Nanofibrous Membrane Using Fractional Factorial Design

Electrospinning, a simple and easily tunable technique that utilizes the force balance between the electrostatic force and the solution surface tension to fabricate membranes out of 1D nanostructured fibers, has garnered much interest especially from the nanotechnology community. Depending on the morphology of the fibers, electrospun membrane has found its way in a wide range of applications, such as oil-water separation, desalination, tissue engineering, and batteries. During an electrospinning process, many factors can affect the morphology of the products, such as viscosity of the solution, voltage supply, discharge distance, feed rate of the solution, and electrospinning time. In this work, we investigated the impacts of the most important parameters on the morphology of electrospun fibrous membrane based on the fractional factorial design. We evaluated the electrospun fibrous membrane morphology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and capillary flow porometry. Poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) was chosen for the current study due to its interesting and versatile functionalities including superior hydrophobicity, high free volume, and piezoelectricity. This work provides valuable insight for the fabrication of electrospun membranes, especially for tailoring membrane properties in accordance with any targeted applications.
