The standard description of the nucleon in the nonrelativistic quark model is an 1S,L = 0 state without orbital motion. Yet, there are several indications from phenomenology that an admixture of states with nonzero orbital motion maybe substantial. In this paper we focus on the “second shell” of the nucleon excitations (D-shell), for which we give a modern description of the wave functions. We follow it by investigating what we call a “maximal mixing” scenario, assuming a hypothetical long-range tensor force. We give the explicit wave functions for all states, before and after mixing, and reassess many predictions such as the magnetic moments, the standard and transitional form-factors from the nucleon to N*. Unexpectedly, in this scenario we can reproduce the long-puzzling features of the Roper resonance N*(1440). But even in this extreme case, the admixture of the 1D,L = 2 state to a nucleon remains significantly smaller than expected from phenomenology.

Hadronic resonances emerge from strong interactions encoding the dynamics of quarks and gluons. The structure of these resonances can be probed by virtual photons parametrized in transition form factors. Here, in this study, twelve N* and Δ transition form factors at the pole are extracted from data with the center-of-mass energy from πN threshold to 1.8 GeV, and the photon virtuality 0 ≤ Q 2 /GeV 2 ≤ 8. For the first time, these results are determined from a simultaneous analysis of more than one state, i.e., ~10 5 πN, ηN, and KΛ electroproduction data. In addition, about 5×10 4 data in the hadronic sector as well as photoproduction serve as boundary conditions. For the Δ(1232) and N(1440) states our results are in qualitative agreement with previous studies, while the transition form factors at the poles of some higher excited states are estimated for the first time. Realistic uncertainties are determined by further exploring the parameter space.
Impressive progress achieved in the past decade in experimental studies of exclusive meson photoproduction off protons and global multichannel amplitude analyses has resulted in the discovery of several long-awaited new nucleon resonances, with a decisive impact from the results of KΛ and KΣ photoproduction measured with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. Further extension of these efforts towards combined studies of exclusive meson photo- and electroproduction data off protons will be presented. A new excited state of the nucleon, the N 0 (1720)3/2 +, discovered from combined analyses of π +π -p photo- and electroproduction data, in addition to new resonances discovered in photo- and hadroproduction data, demonstrate the promising prospects of this new research avenue for the discovery of additional new resonances.
