Blue Canyon Dome: Development of a Small-Scale Testbed for Monitoring Underground Explosions

This report documents the development of the Blue Canyon Dome (BCD) testbed, including test site selection, development, instrumentation, and logistical considerations. The BCD testbed was designed for small-scale explosive tests (~5 kg TNT equivalence maximum) for the purpose of comparing diagnostic signals from different types of explosives, the assumption being that different chemical explosives would generate different signatures on geophysical and other monitoring tools. The BCD testbed is located at the Energetic Materials Research and Testing Center near Socorro, New Mexico. Instrumentation includes an electrical resistivity tomography array, geophones, distributed acoustic sensing, gas samplers, distributed temperature sensing, pressure transducers, and high-speed cameras. This SAND report is a reference for BCD testbed development that can be cited in future publications.

Field Test Plan for Underground Hydrogen Storage Demonstration in a Porous Reservoir

Climate and sea level change is causing numerous challenges across the globe to human societies and the cultural and infrastructure investments they have made over hundreds of years based on previous modalities in climate and sea level. Decarbonizing our global economy is therefore essential to stopping additional emissions of CO 2 to the atmosphere. One proposed decarbonization technology that has been advanced as a replacement for the “hydrocarbon economy” that exists today is the “hydrogen economy.” In the hydrogen economy, hydrogen is both an energy carrier and an industrial feedstock that can replace hydrocarbons’ traditional roles in these systems. While most hydrogen is produced from conventional, fossil-based feedstocks, hydrogen comes with the added benefits of being able to be made from water and electricity providing a promising way to store renewable energy from wind and solar developments.

Sampling and Analysis Plan for LSL2 Underground Storage Tank Evaluation of PFAS in Soil: Protection of Groundwater

This SAP gathers all pertinent information relevant to the sampling and analysis of soil at the removal site for a former 10,000-gallon UST and reference sites in the vicinity of the excavation site. Data Quality Objectives establishes the process and steps for the acquisition of data. Data Flow Diagram establishes the decisions and next steps. Quality Assurance Project Plan establishes the quality requirements for data collection, including planning, implementation, and assessment of sampling, field measurements, and laboratory analysis. The work is being completed for DOE-SC Pacific Northwest Site Office.

Calendar Year 2023 Underground Test Area Annual Sampling Letter Report Nevada National Security Site

The calendar year 2023 annual sampling letter report presents Plan implementation and a summary of field activities, sampling methods, well completion diagrams, and analytical laboratory results from sampling of wells associated with the Pahute Mesa CAUs. The CY 2023 letter report also presents data from samples collected from Well ER-EC-11_p3 as part of a sampling investigation. This well was resampled because of anomalously low standard tritium (3H) results from bailer sampling that occurred in July 2021.

A Novel Generator for Novel Underground Environments: Cooperative Research and Development (Final Report)

The Participant is developing a high temperature, high pressure generator to power downhole instrumentation. The generator harvests vibrational energy from the drill string and converts it to stored electrical potential energy. NREL has two principle obligations 1) is modeling for the overall potential downhole effectiveness of the potential drill. Second is the packaging for downhole extreme environments based on prior NREL IP this was discussed with the PI at length but the generator was never provided so direct packaging experiments were not conducted.

Transplutonium elements processed from rock debris of underground detonations

Six-step chemical processing method extracts minute quantities of transplutonium elements found in rock debris following a nuclear detonation. The process consists of dissolution of rock, feed preparation, liquid-liquid extraction, final purification of transplutonium elements and plutonium, and separation of the transplutonium elements.

Relationship of roof falls in underground coal mines to fractures mapped on ERTS-1 imagery

ERTS imagery is of unique value for mapping of certain fractures that are not identifiable on aircraft imagery. Because color infrared and ERTS imagery complement each other both sources of data were used to map fractures in western Indiana and eastern Illinois. In the Kings Station Mine, Gibson County, Indiana, most roof falls reported had occurred in areas where mapped fractures were closely spaced and intersecting. Using this information as a basis for extrapolation, roof fall hazard maps were prepared for other mine sites. Various coal resources programs related to energy and environment also were conducted.

Community level impacts of expanding underground coal mining

The potential secondary consequences of rapid community growth in deep mining localities and the ability of affected communities to absorb and manage such growth are discussed. Areas discussed include Sweetwater County, Wyoming, and Marion and Monongalia Counties, West Virginia.

Underground coal mine instrumentation and test

The need to evaluate mechanical performance of mine tools and to obtain test performance data from candidate systems dictate that an engineering data recording system be built. Because of the wide range of test parameters which would be evaluated, a general purpose data gathering system was designed and assembled to permit maximum versatility. A primary objective of this program was to provide a specific operating evaluation of a longwall mining machine vibration response under normal operating conditions. A number of mines were visited and a candidate for test evaluation was selected, based upon management cooperation, machine suitability, and mine conditions. Actual mine testing took place in a West Virginia mine.
