The duality between color and kinematics and its applications

Abstract This review describes the duality between color and kinematics and its applications, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the perturbative structure of gauge and gravity theories. We emphasize, in particular, applications to loop-level calculations, the broad web of theories linked by the duality and the associated double-copy structure, and the issue of extending the duality and double copy beyond scattering amplitudes. The review is aimed at doctoral students and junior researchers both inside and outside the field of amplitudes and is accompanied by various exercises.

The 𝑚=2 amplituhedron and the hypersimplex: Signs, clusters, tilings, Eulerian numbers

The hypersimplex Δ <#comment/> k + 1 , n \Delta _{k+1,n} is the image of the positive Grassmannian G r k + 1 , n ≥ <#comment/> 0 Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n} under the moment map. It is a polytope of dimension n − <#comment/> 1 n-1 in R n \mathbb {R}^n . Meanwhile, the amplituhedron A n , k , 2 ( Z ) \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2}(Z) is the projection of the positive Grassmannian G r k , n ≥ <#comment/> 0 Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n} into the Grassmannian G r k , k + 2 Gr_{k,k+2} under a map Z ~ <#comment/> \tilde {Z} induced by a positive matrix Z ∈ <#comment/> M a t n , k + 2 > 0 Z\in Mat_{n,k+2}^{>0} . Introduced in the context of scattering amplitudes , it is not a polytope, and has full dimension 2 k 2k inside G r k , k + 2 Gr_{k,k+2} . Nevertheless, there seem to be remarkable connections between these two objects via T-duality , as conjectured by Łukowski, Parisi, and Williams [Int. Math. Res. Not. (2023)]. In this paper we use ideas from oriented matroid theory, total positivity, and the geometry of the hypersimplex and positroid polytopes to obtain a deeper understanding of the amplituhedron. We show that the inequalities cutting out positroid polytopes —images of positroid cells of G r k + 1 , n ≥ <#comment/> 0 Gr^{\geq 0}_{k+1,n} under the moment map—translate into sign conditions characterizing the T-dual Grasstopes —images of positroid cells of G r k , n ≥ <#comment/> 0 Gr^{\geq 0}_{k,n} under Z ~ <#comment/> \tilde {Z} . Moreover, we subdivide the amplituhedron into chambers , just as the hypersimplex can be subdivided into simplices, with both chambers and simplices enumerated by the Eulerian numbers. We use these properties to prove the main conjecture of Łukowski, Parisi, and Williams [Int. Math. Res. Not. (2023)]: a collection of positroid polytopes is a tiling of the hypersimplex if and only if the collection of T-dual Grasstopes is a tiling of the amplituhedron A n , k , 2 ( Z ) \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2}(Z) for all Z Z . Moreover, we prove Arkani-Hamed–Thomas–Trnka’s conjectural sign-flip characterization of A n , k , 2 \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2} , and Łukowski–Parisi–Spradlin–Volovich’s conjectures on m = 2 m=2 cluster adjacency and on positroid tiles for A n , k , 2 \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2} (images of 2 k 2k -dimensional positroid cells which map injectively into A n , k , 2 \mathcal {A}_{n,k,2} ). Finally, we introduce new cluster structures in the amplituhedron.

IR side of bounds on theories with spontaneously broken Lorentz symmetry

In nature, some UV features of dynamics are reflected in IR quantities. In fully relativistic theories, this connection can be probed through the analyticity properties of scattering amplitudes, allowing one to understand which IR theories respect the UV assumptions of quantum field theory. The ensuing analyticity bounds can usually be rephrased as the absence of faster-than-light propagation for low-energy excitations. While it is interesting to understand these relations and their IR characterization for theories that have less idealized properties, it is also more difficult to derive analyticity bounds in these cases. For theories that spontaneously break Lorentz symmetry, recent progress was made by considering correlators of conserved currents and their analyticity properties. In this work, we focus on such theories and work to close the gap from the IR side, finding a natural way to express the known analyticity bounds purely in terms of low-energy kinematical quantities. Our analysis shows that the bounds require gapped excitations to have a slower speed than the gapless ones, at least for momenta that are low with respect to the mass gap. These results suggest a way to interpret the UV/IR connection in more complex theories.

Di-nucleons do not form bound states at heavy pion mass

We perform a high-statistics lattice QCD calculation of the low-energy two-nucleon scattering amplitudes. To address discrepancies in the literature, the calculation is performed at a heavy pion mass in the limit that the light quark masses are equal to the physical strange quark mass, 𝑚 𝜋 = 𝑚 𝐾 ≃ 714 MeV. Using a state-of-the-art momentum space method, we rule out the presence of a bound di-nucleon in both the isospin 0 (deuteron) and 1 (di-neutron) channels, in contrast with many previous results that made use of compact hexaquark creation operators. To diagnose the discrepancy, we add such hexaquark interpolating operators to our basis and find that they do not affect the determination of the two-nucleon finite-volume spectrum, and thus they do not couple to deeply bound di-nucleons that are missed by the momentum-space operators. Furthermore, we perform a high-statistics calculation of the HAL QCD potential on the same gauge ensembles and find qualitative agreement with our main results. We conclude that di-nucleons do not form bound states at heavy pion masses and that previous identification of deeply bound di-nucleons must have arisen from a misidentification of the spectrum from off-diagonal elements of a correlation function.

Phase-resolved terahertz nanoimaging of W Te 2 microcrystals

The terahertz (THz) electrodynamics of few-layer W⁢Te 2 is dominated by the plasmon response. However, THz surface plasmons (SPs) with long wavelengths in two-dimensional exfoliated crystals are typically confined by the lateral geometry. Direct visualization of the plasmonic standing wave patterns is challenging due to the spatial confinement and low quality factor of the SP, especially for samples that are only a few monolayers thick. Here, we resolve subtle real-space features of the plasmonic response of W⁢Te 2 by augmenting more common scattering amplitude experiments with the phase contrast accomplished within the time-domain version of THz nanoimaging. Amplitude and phase images allow us to quantitatively evaluate the evolution of the plasmonic response at cryogenic temperatures in samples with variable thickness from 3 to 12 monolayers. Further, the proposed imaging modality is universally applicable to the THz near-field nanoscopy of low-dimensional materials.

Electron irradiation reveals robust fully gapped superconductivity in LaNiGa 2

The effects of 2.5-MeV electron irradiation were studied in the superconducting phase of single crystals of LaNiGa 2 , using measurements of electrical transport and radio-frequency magnetic susceptibility. The London penetration depth is found to vary exponentially with temperature, suggesting a fully gapped Fermi surface. The inferred superfluid density is close to that of a single-gap weak-coupling isotropic s – wave superconductor. Superconductivity is extremely robust against nonmagnetic point-like disorder induced by electron irradiation. Our results place strong constraints on the previously proposed triplet pairing state by requiring fine-tuned impurity scattering amplitudes and are most naturally explained by a sign-preserving, weak-coupling, and approximately momentum-independent singlet superconducting state in LaNiGa 2 , which does not break time-reversal symmetry. Finally, we discuss how our findings could be reconciled with previous measurements that indicated magnetic signatures in the superconducting phase.

Quantum graph models for transport in filamentary switching

The formation of metallic nanofilaments bridging two electrodes across an insulator is a mechanism for resistive switching. Examples of such phenomena include atomic synapses, which constitute a distinct class of memristive devices the behavior of which is closely tied to the properties of the filament. Until recently, experimental investigation of the low-temperature regime and quantum transport effects has been limited. However, with growing interest in understanding the true impacts of the filament on device conductance, comprehending quantum effects has become crucial for quantum neuromorphic hardware. Here, we discuss quantum transport resulting from filamentary switching in a narrow region where the continuous approximation of the contact is not valid, and only a few atoms are involved. In this scenario, the filament can be represented by a graph depicting the adjacency of atoms and the overlap between atomic orbitals. Using the theory of quantum graphs with locally diffusive node scattering, we calculate the scattering amplitude of charge carriers on this graph and explore the interplay between filamentary formation and quantum transport effects.

Convergence of nuclear effective field theory with perturbative pions

The classic paper by Fleming, Mehen, and Stewart (FMS) cast doubts on the convergence of spin-triplet nucleon-nucleon partial wave scattering amplitudes when following the proposal of Kaplan, Savage, and Wise to construct nuclear effective field theory (EFT) around the unitary fermion limit with perturbative pion exchange. FMS identified the subclass of iterated one-pion exchange potential graphs as the cause of this poor convergence, which they showed persisted in the chiral limit. Theoretical tools are developed in this work to compute these Feynman graphs analytically to high order in all angular momentum channels simultaneously, examining the amplitudes computed to seven loops in the $\textit{L = J}$ channels and three loops in the coupled $\textit{L = J}$ ± 1 channels. One finds that there is nothing pathological about the perturbative expansion of a 1/$r^3$ potential in general and that the expansion converges satisfactorily in all partial waves except those with the lowest angular momentum, particularly the $^3P_0$ and the coupled $^3S_1 - ^3D_1$ channels. The results corroborate work by Birse, which suggests possible avenues to explore for improving the range of validity of the EFT expansion.

Slope parameter of the symmetry energy and the structure of three-particle interactions in nuclear matter

In the first part of this paper, we present a study of the symmetry energy (a s ) and its slope parameter (L) for nuclear matter in the framework of the Fermi liquid theory of Landau and Migdal. We derive an exact relation between a s and L, which involves the nucleon effective masses and three-particle Landau-Migdal parameters. We present simple estimates which suggest that there are two main mechanisms to explain the empirical values of L: The proton-neutron effective mass difference in isospin asymmetric matter and the ℓ = 0 moment of the isovector in-medium three-particle scattering amplitude. In the second part of this paper, we discuss the general structure of three-particle interactions in nuclear matter in the framework of the Fermi liquid theory. The connections to the Bethe-Brueckner-Goldstone theory and other approaches are also discussed. Finally, we show explicitly how the first few terms in the Faddeev series, together with medium induced three-particle interactions, emerge naturally in the Fermi liquid theory.

Kinetic relaxation and nucleation of Bose stars in self-interacting wave dark matter

We revisit kinetic relaxation and soliton/boson star nucleation in fuzzy scalar dark matter featuring short-ranged self-interactions H int = − λ | ψ | 4 / 2 m 2 , alongside gravitational self-interactions. We map out the full curve of nucleation timescale for both repulsive ( λ < 0 ) and attractive ( λ > 0 ) short-ranged self-interaction strength and in doing so reveal two new points. Firstly, besides the two usual terms, ∝ G 2 and ∝ λ 2 , in the total relaxation rate Γ relax , there is an additional cross term ∝ G λ arising due to interference between gravitational and short-ranged self-interaction scattering amplitudes. This yields a critical repulsive interaction strength λ cr ≃ − 2 π G m 2 / v 0 2 , at which the relaxation rate is smallest and serves as the transition point between typical net attractive self-interaction ( λ ≳ λ cr ) and net repulsive self-interaction ( − λ ≳ − λ cr ). Secondly, while in the net attractive regime, nucleation timescale is similar to inverse relaxation timescale τ nuc ∼ Γ relax − 1 ; in the net repulsive regime, nucleation occurs at a delayed time τ nuc ∼ ( λ / λ cr ) Γ relax − 1 . We confirm our analytical understanding by performing 3D field simulations with varying average mass density ρ ¯ , box size L and grid size N . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Extracting transition generalized parton distributions from hard exclusive pion-nucleon scattering

We study the extraction of transition generalized parton distributions (GPDs) from production of two back-to-back high transverse momentum photons ( γ γ ) and a massive pair of leptons ( ℓ + ℓ − ) in hard exclusive pion-nucleon scattering. We argue that the exclusive scattering amplitude of both processes could be factorized into nonperturbative pion distribution amplitude and nucleon transition GPDs that are convoluted with perturbatively calculable short-distance matching coefficients. We demonstrate that the exclusive diphoton production not only is complementary to the Drell-Yan-type dilepton production for extracting the GPDs but also provides enhanced sensitivities for extracting the parton momentum fraction x dependence of the GPDs. We show that both exclusive observables are physically measurable at the J-PARC and AMBER experiment energies. If the target nucleon can be polarized, corresponding spin asymmetries can offer additional sensitivities for extracting transition GPDs. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Charmonium χ c 0 and χ c 2 resonances in coupled-channel scattering from lattice QCD

In order to explore the spectrum of hidden-charm scalar and tensor resonances, we study meson-meson scattering with J P C = 0 + + , 2 + + in the charmonium energy region using lattice QCD. Employing a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV , we determine coupled-channel scattering amplitudes up to around 4100 MeV considering all kinematically relevant channels consisting of a pair of open-charm mesons or a charmonium meson with a light meson. A single isolated scalar resonance near 4000 MeV is found with large couplings to D D ¯ , D s D ¯ s and the kinematically closed D * D ¯ * channel. A single tensor resonance at a similar mass couples strongly to D D ¯ , D D ¯ * and D * D ¯ * . We compare the extracted resonances to contemporary experimental candidate states, previous lattice results and theoretical modeling. In contrast to several other studies, we do not find any significant feature in the scalar amplitudes between the ground state χ c 0 ( 1 P ) and the resonance found around 4000 MeV. Timelike meson form factors beyond the elastic region from lattice QCD

We present a calculation of the vector-isovector timelike form factors of the pion and the kaon using lattice quantum chromodynamics. We calculate two-point correlation functions with m π ∼ 280 MeV , extracting both the finite-volume spectrum and matrix elements for these states created from the vacuum by a vector current. After determining the coupled-channel π π , K K ¯ scattering amplitudes, we perform the necessary correction for the significant finite-volume effects present in the current matrix elements, leading to the timelike form factors. We find these to be dominated by the presence of the ρ resonance, and we extract its decay constant by an analytic continuation of the amplitudes to the resonance pole. In addition, the spacelike pion form factor is determined on the same lattice configurations, and a dispersive parametrization is used to simultaneously describe the spacelike and elastic timelike regions. Diamond of infrared equivalences in abelian gauge theories

We demonstrate a tree-level equivalence between four distinct infrared objects in (d+2)-dimensional Abelian gauge theories. These are (i) the large gauge charge Q ϵ where the function ϵ on the sphere parametrizing large gauge transformations is identified with the Goldstone mode θ of spontaneously broken large gauge symmetry; (ii) the soft effective action that captures the dynamics of the soft and Goldstone modes; (iii) the edge mode action with Neumann boundary conditions; and (iv) the Wilson line dressing of a scattering amplitude, including a novel dressing for soft photons, which have local charge distributions despite having vanishing global charge. The promotion of the large gauge parameter to the dynamical Goldstone and the novel dressing of soft gauge particles give rise to intriguing possibilities for the future study of infrared dynamics of gauge theories and gravity.

Nonlocal chiral anomaly and generalized parton distributions

We discuss the nonlocal generalization of the QCD chiral anomaly along the light cone and derive relations between twist-two, twist-three, and twist-four generalized parton distributions (GPDs) mediated by the anomaly. We further establish the connection to the “anomaly pole” in the GPD E ˜ recently identified in the perturbative calculation of the Compton scattering amplitudes, and demonstrate its cancellation at the GPD level. Our work helps elucidate the previously unexplored connection between GPDs, the chiral anomaly, and the mass generation of the η ′ meson. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Effective Field Theories on the Jet Bundle

We develop a generalized field space geometry for higher-derivative scalar field theories, expressing scattering amplitudes in terms of a covariant geometry on the all-order jet bundle. The incorporation of spacetime and field derivative coordinates solves complications due to higher-order derivatives faced by existing approaches to field space geometry. We identify a jet bundle analog to the field space metric that, besides field redefinitions, exhibits invariance under total derivatives. The invariance consequently extends to its amplitude contributions and the canonical covariant geometry. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Surface Kinematics and the Canonical Yang-Mills All-Loop Integrand

It has been a long-standing challenge to define a canonical loop integrand for nonsupersymmetric gluon scattering amplitudes in the planar limit. Naive integrands are inflicted with 1 / 0 ambiguities associated with tadpoles and massless external bubbles, which destroy integrand-level gauge invariance as well as consistent on-shell factorization on single loop cuts. In this Letter, we show that this essentially kinematical obstruction to defining “the” integrand for Yang-Mills theory has a structural solution, handed to us by the formulation of gluon amplitudes in terms of curves on surfaces. This defines “surface kinematics” generalizing momenta, making it possible to define the integrand satisfying both a (surface generalized) notion of gauge-invariance and consistent loop cuts. The integrand also vanishes at infinity in appropriate directions, allowing it to be recursively computed for nonsupersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in any number of dimensions. We illustrate these ideas through one loop for all multiplicity, and for the simplest two-loop integrand. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Probing quantum entanglement with generalized parton distributions at the Electron-Ion Collider

Within the collinear factorization framework based on generalized parton distributions, we calculate the spin density matrix of exclusively produced quark and antiquark pairs $𝑢\bar{𝑢}$, $𝑑⁢\bar{d}$, $𝑠⁢\bar{𝑠}$, $𝑐\bar{⁢𝑐}$, $𝑏\bar{𝑏}$ in electron-proton scattering. The presence of both real and imaginary parts in the scattering amplitudes leads to a rich pattern of entanglement between the quark and the antiquark. We map out kinematical regions where the pairs exhibit entanglement, Bell nonlocality, and nonstabilizerness. We also predict that massive quarks and antiquarks are transversely polarized, similar to the well-known transverse hyperon polarization in unpolarized collisions. In strangeness, charm, and bottom productions, the polarization can reach 50%–80% in certain kinematic regions in the low-energy runs of the Electron-Ion Collider.
