Efficient BiVO 4 /CoFeO x H y photoanodes using controlled annealing and conformal linear-sweep electrocatalyst photodeposition

Although monoclinic bismuth vanadate (BiVO 4 ) is a promising photoanode for solar water splitting, its practical use is hindered by imperfect photocurrent generation/collection, low photovoltage compared to the bandgap, and corrosion side reactions that limit durability. Here, we introduce a controlled-annealing sol–gel process for BiVO 4 thin-film photoanodes along with an optimized linear-sweep-voltammetry photodeposition of CoFeO x H y cocatalysts. The resulting BiVO 4 films annealed at 550 °C exhibited a photocurrent density of 4.1 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V RHE under 1 sun AM 1.5G solar simulation and a low onset potential of 0.26 V RHE due to high majority carrier conductivity, a crystalline bulk with reduced defects as evidenced by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and photoluminescence lifetime analysis, and thus enhanced photocarrier collection. However, significant degradation in performance was found due to interfacial photocorrosion. To protect the surface and speed the oxygen-evolution reaction CoFeO x H y cocatalyst layers were deposited. By varying the number of consecutive sweeps and adjusting the applied bias range, an ultra-thin (~15 nm) CoFeO x H y cocatalyst layer was uniformly grown deposited over 30 cycles on the BiVO 4 surface. The resulting BiVO 4 /CoFeO x H y yielded 4.03 mA/cm 2 at 1.23 V RHE and onset potential of 0.24 V RHE , with stable operation (~15 % loss in photocurrent at 1.23 V RHE relative to ~60 % loss in the uncatalyzed control sample). These conformal CoFeO x H y catalytic layers function simultaneously to selectively collect photoexcited holes from the BiVO 4 , catalyze the water-oxidation reaction, and protect the BiVO 4 from photodegradation.

Spinel high-entropy oxides (FeNiCrMnZnX) 3 O 4 (X = Al, mg) as anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries

To address the high cost, cobalt dependency, and resource constraints typical of conventional high-entropy oxide (HEO) anodes, this study reports the successful synthesis of two Co-free, six-component spinel-type HEOs(FeNiCrMnZnAl) 3 O 4 (HEO-Al) and (FeNiCrMnZnMg) 3 O 4 (HEO-Mg), via a sol-gel method. The distinct effects of Al 3+ and Mg 2+ incorporation on the electrochemical performance and lithium storage kinetics were systematically investigated. XRD, Raman, and TEM characterizations confirm that both materials possess a pure spinel phase, uniform particle size, and homogeneous elemental distribution. Notably, electrochemical evaluations reveal that HEO-Al delivers a superior reversible capacity of 480.7 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 , and maintains 354.5 mAh g −1 after 1000 long-term cycles at 1 A g −1 , significantly outperforming HEO-Mg. Kinetic analysis indicates that HEO-Al exhibits lower charge transfer resistance, a higher Li + diffusion coefficient, and a pseudocapacitive contribution of up to 82%. Furthermore, these findings demonstrate that Al substitution effectively optimizes the structural stability and lithium storage kinetics of Co-free HEOs, providing a viable strategy for designing low-cost, highly stable HEO anode systems.

Photooxidative decomposition and defluorination of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) using an innovative technology of UV–vis/Zn x Cu 1-x Fe 2 O 4 /oxalic acid

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a large group of perfluorinated organic molecules that have been in use since the 1940s for industrial, commercial, and consumer applications. PFAS are a growing concern because some of them have shown persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic effects. In this work, we demonstrate an innovative technology of UV–vis/Zn x Cu 1-x Fe 2 O 4 /oxalic acid for the degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) in water. The magnetically retrievable nanocrystalline heterogeneous ferrite catalysts, Zn x Cu 1-x Fe 2 O 4 were synthesized using a sol-gel auto-combustion process followed by calcination at 400 °C. The combination of Zn x Cu 1-x Fe 2 O 4 and oxalic acid generate reactive species under UV light irradiation. These reactive species are then shown to be capable of the photodegradation of PFOA. The degree of degradation is tracked by identifying transformation products using liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectroscopy (LC-QTOF-MS).

Molecularly engineered ZnO–carbon nanosheets from fumaric acid precursors for efficient photocatalytic water purification

The photocatalytic breakdown of organic contaminants is crucial for the development of water purification technology. Zinc oxide (ZnO) is an extensively researched photocatalyst; however, its efficacy is hindered by rapid charge recombination and limited utilization of UV irradiation. Resolving these issues necessitates integrating ZnO with conductive carbon phases via scalable, low-temperature synthesis. We provide a molecularly designed sol–gel method that converts zinc–fumarate coordination networks into two-dimensional ZnO–carbon nanosheets utilizing solely aqueous precursors and mild annealing temperatures (400–600 °C). This method utilizes fumaric acid as a dicarboxylate linker and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a structural carbon source to produce ultrathin wurtzite ZnO nanosheets embedded inside an amorphous carbon matrix. The resultant ZnO-C hybrid achieves nearly complete methylene blue degradation within 10 min under UV-A illumination, demonstrating first-order kinetics and outstanding recyclability. Compared with commercial ZnO, the ZnO–C nanosheets exhibit comparable rapid photocatalytic degradation, enhanced adsorption behavior, a porous nanosheet morphology, and an integrated ZnO–carbon interfacial structure. These findings provide a viable molecular-templating approach to fabricating various metal oxide–carbon photocatalysts and underscore substantial enhancements in semiconductor efficacy in eco-friendly water treatment systems.

RF-transpond: A 1D coupled cold plasma wave and plasma transport model for ponderomotive force driven density modification parallel to B

The RF-Transpond code couples a fluid plasma transport solver with a frequency domain cold plasma RF wave solver in a 1D domain parallel to a strong background magnetic field. A ponderomotive force term proportional to parallel gradients in the electric field strength is included in the transport model in order to describe ponderomotive effects in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of fusion plasmas. The transport and wave codes are verified independently and a coupled case corresponding to experimental parameters from the LArge Plasma Device (LAPD) is presented. The density perturbation ratio R n , calculated to describe ponderomotive force driven modifications, is up to 20% for the simulation inputs used.

Improved cycle stability and high-rate capability of LiNbO 3 -coated Li 3 VO 4 as anode material for lithium-ion battery

Lithium vanadate (Li 3 VO 4 ) has garnered considerable attention as an alternative negative electrode material for non-aqueous lithium-ion batteries due to its high capacity, energy efficiency, and stable discharge voltage. Nonetheless, the Li 3 VO 4 material displays a low rate capability, attributed mainly to its poor intrinsic electronic conductivity. Here, in this study, we report the synthesis of lithium niobate LiNbO 3 -coated Li 3 VO 4 (LVO@LNO) using a one-pot sol-gel method. The resulting LVO@LNO demonstrates a high reversible capacity of approximately 530 mAh/g, which is more than double that of free Li 3 VO 4 . To explore the effect of the LNO coating process on the morphological and structural properties, Raman, XRD, operando XRD, XPS, SEM and HTEM analyses were conducted. To explain the enhancement of electronic conductivity in our modified material after a LiNbO 3 coating, we conducted an Ex-Situ electrochemical impedance (EIS) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) computational study. Additionally, we designed a full cell utilizing a 1 wt% LNO-coated LVO anode and NMC-811 cathode. The cell yielded an output voltage of approximately 2.8 V with a high initial specific capacity of 350 mAh/g versus to the anode, at 1C with a capacity retention of 85 % after 100 cycles.

Analysis of thermal response of new diagnostic probe in TCV

Thermal response of the new multi-purpose diagnostic probe inside the TCV (Tokamak à Configuration Variable) tokamak is studied. The New Probe Head (NPH) was constructed at the University of Innsbruck and developed in collaboration with various European laboratories within EUROfusion program. The NPH can be used in different MST devices by applying corresponding adapters. Its design, followed by the prototype, has to go through a number of tests (numerical and experimental), before it can be used in the tokamak environment, where it has to withstand repeated exposure to the Scrape-Off-Layer (SOL) plasma. Presented numerical analyses of the NPH thermal response inside the TCV tokamak are performed by the Jožef Stefan Institute.

Elevated-Mn ChemCam targets illuminating Mn redox cycling and diagenesis in the Bradbury Rise, Gale Crater, Mars

Manganese plays a crucial role as a paleo-environmental and geological indicator due to its sensitivity to redox potential and pH variations in the environment. On Earth, the association between the rise of atmospheric oxygen during the Great Oxidation Event and the presence of Mn in the sedimentary rock record underscores its significance. Here, in this study, we reexamined ChemCam targets from the first 600 sols of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, focusing on identifying instances of above-average Mn within these targets. These elevated-Mn targets were categorized into distinct geologic classes, revealing a pattern linking heightened Mn levels with diagenetically altered materials, such as calcium-sulfate veins and concretions, as well as clay minerals within the same targets, indicating a compelling relationship between Mn enrichment and diagenetic processes. High concentrations of Mn were observed in chemically altered targets, suggesting the occurrence of multiple fluid events: the first to alter the material and the second to deposit Mn. The observed patterns suggest multiple diagenetic events and redox cycling that facilitated the deposition and transport of Mn subsequent to the initial dissolution of basaltic materials. This research sheds light on the complexity of martian diagenetic processes and their implications for the planet’s environmental evolution.

Aerosol emissions from water-lean solvents for post-combustion CO 2 capture

Advanced water-lean solvents (WLS) for post-combustion CO 2 capture have been gaining interest due to their ability to reduce the parasitic penalty from energy needed for solvent regeneration. Commercial implementation of these novel CO 2 capture technologies hinges on successful control of amine emissions. RTI conducted a parametric study of fundamental and operational variables influence on overall amine aerosol and vapor emissions from our water-lean solvent eCO 2 Sol™ using our 6-kW equivalent bench-scale gas absorption system. The parametric testing used a simulated flue gas with 15 % CO 2 , 2.3–4.2 % H 2 O, and 0–6 ppm sulfite (SO 3 ) to examine the impact of the presence of aerosols to the capture performance and amine emissions from the system. The SO 3 reacts with water in the flue gas to create H 2 SO 4 , which forms liquid aerosol droplets and provide nucleation sites for growth of aerosols. Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer and Aerodynamic Particle Sizer instruments monitored the aerosol particle size distribution. Parametric testing results suggested that the presence of the aerosols in the flue gas could increase the overall amine emissions by 10X compared to the baseline emissions from WLS’s vapor pressure. Principal component analysis (PCA) and projection to latent squares (PLS) developed models to predict the aerosol-based amine emissions from process data. The predictive PLS model had a correlation coefficient (Q 2 ) of 0.92 and could predict the aerosol-based emissions from the NAS process with ±15 % accuracy (average absolute deviation, AAD). The PLS regression model also identified key variables affecting aerosol-based emissions from WLS.

Unraveling the nature of Fe-doping mediated inter- and intra-chain interactions in Ca 3 Co 2 O 6

The structural and magnetic properties of quasi-one-dimensional (1D) spin-chain compounds Ca 3 Co 2-x Fe x O 6 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3) synthesized by a sol-gel method have been systematically studied by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), neutron powder diffraction (NPD), dc and ac magnetization measurements. The samples adopt a rhombohedral crystal structure with the space group R-3c in a temperature range of 5–100 K. Fe ions are found to locate at the trigonal prism Co2 crystallographic sites. Fe doping converts some of low-spin Co 3+ ions at Co1 octahedral sites into Co 2+ ions. For the high-temperature paramagnetic phase, the Curie paramagnetic temperature θp changes its sign from positive to negative at x = 0.2, implying that the dominant magnetic interaction is driven from ferromagnetic (FM) to antiferromagnetic (AFM) upon Fe substitution. A partial low-spin to high-spin state crossover of the Co1 ions is observed at high Fe-doping level x = 0.3. All the samples exhibit a long-range spin-density wave (SDW) AFM ordering below TN, followed by a spin-glass-like transition at Tf. These low-temperature magnetic phases were significantly suppressed upon Fe doping. The Fe substitution in Ca 3 Co 2-x Fe x O 6 weakened both intrachain and interchain magnetic interactions, caused by enhanced magnetic disorder due to the different magnetic characters of Ising Co and Heisenberg Fe spins.

Competing magnetic interactions and emergent phase diagrams in double perovskite Y 2 Ni x Co 1–x MnO 6

We present a comparative study of double perovskites Y 2 Ni x Co 1–x MnO 6 for x = 1, 0.5, and 0. The polycrystalline samples of Y 2 Ni x Co 1–x MnO 6 with space group P2 1 /n were synthesized via sol-gel technique. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirms the presence of majority Ni 2+ /Mn 4+ in Y 2 NiMnO 6 (YNMO) and a mixed valence state Ni 2+/3+ /Co 2+/3+ /Mn 4+/3+ in co-doped Y 2 Ni 0.5 Co 0.5 MnO 6 (YNCMO). The temperature dependent magnetization results suggest homogeneous substitution of Ni ions with Co ions with minimal contribution of 3+ cationic magnetic interactions in YNCMO. The superexchange ferromagnetic (FM) interaction has a major contribution to the magnetism of YNMO. The strength of antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling resulting from the antiphase boundaries in Y 2 Ni x Co 1–x MnO 6 increases with the increase in the Co concentration. The AC susceptibility (AC-χ) study further validates the presence of higher density of antiphase boundaries, which is reflected by the dynamics of domain walls in YNCMO. The isothermal magnetic entropy change (ΔS M ) as functions of temperature and magnetic field is exploited to assess the stabilization of different magnetic phases. Finally, the findings of ΔS M (T,µ 0 H) lead to the proposed new magnetic phase diagrams for Y 2 Ni x Co 1–x MnO 6 for x = 1 and 0.5, in comparison with the previously established phase diagram of Y 2 CoMnO 6 .

Transparent silica aerogel slabs synthesized from nanoparticle colloidal suspensions at near ambient conditions on omniphobic liquid substrates

This paper presents a novel sol-gel method to synthesize large and thick silica aerogel monoliths at near ambient conditions using a commercial aqueous solution of colloidal silica nanoparticles as building blocks. To achieve slabs with high visible transmittance and low thermal conductivity, the method combines the strategies of (i) synthesizing gels on an omniphobic perfluorocarbon liquid substrate, (ii) aging at temperatures above room temperature, and (iii) performing solvent exchange with a low-surface-tension organic solvent prior to ambient drying. The omniphobic liquid substrates were used to prevent cracking and ensure an optically-smooth surface, while nanoparticle building blocks were small (<10 nm) to limit volumetric light scattering. Gels were aged at temperatures between 25 and 80 °C for up to 21 days to make them stronger and stiffer and to reduce shrinkage and cracking during ambient drying. Ambient drying was achieved by first exchanging water in the gel pores for octane, followed by drying in an octane-rich atmosphere to decrease capillary forces. The synthesized nanoparticle-based silica aerogel monoliths had thicknesses up to 5 mm, diameters up to 10 cm, porosities exceeding 80%, and thermal conductivities as low as 0.08 W m –1 K –1 . Notably, the slabs featured visible transmittance exceeding 75% even for slabs as thick as 5 mm. The as-synthesized aerogel monoliths were exposed to TMCS vapor to induce hydrophobic properties resulting in a water contact angle of 140° that prevented water infiltration into the pores and protected the aerogels from water damage. This simple synthesis route conducted at near ambient conditions produces hydrophobic aerogel monoliths with promising optically transparent and thermally insulating properties that can be adhered to glass panes for window insulation and solar-thermal energy conversion applications.

Mesoporous Fe-doped MgO nanoparticles as a heterogeneous photo-Fenton-like catalyst for degradation of salicylic acid in wastewater

Mesoporous Fe-doped MgO nanoparticles were synthesized using a facile sol-gel method and utilized for photo-Fenton-like degradation of salicylic acid (SA). The MgO surface dissolution facilitated an increase in the pH under the reaction conditions that allowed the Fe-MgO catalyst to be active without detectable iron leaching. Under simulated solar radiation, SA was completely degraded with an initial rate constant of 0.048 min -1 at the optimal reaction conditions of 500 ppm loading of 5% Fe-MgO, 20 mM H 2 O 2 concentration, and 50 ppm SA concentration. The catalyst was stable over 5 reaction cycles. The Fe-MgO catalyst was shown to have a surface area up to 171 m 2 /g and contain hematite (Fe 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles with octahedrally coordinated iron catalytic centers, as inferred from diffuse reflectance UV–vis measurements. Post-reaction catalyst characterization showed that some Fe 2+ was present in the catalyst due to the redox cycle during the chain initiation and propagation steps of the reaction.

Metamagnetism and kinetic arrest in a long-range ferromagnetically ordered multicaloric double perovskite Y 2 CoMnO 6

A systematic magnetic study of the double perovskite oxide Y 2 CoMnO 6 (YCMO) has been performed. A monoclinic P21/n phase of YCMO was synthesized using a sol-gel method. Neutron diffraction (ND) measurements evidence the onset of long-range ferromagnetic (FM) ordering at TC ~ 76 K, which persists down to 5 K. The presence of 25% antisite disorder, estimated from the ND data, leads to the appearance of short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions. The existence of thermal hysteresis due to competing interactions between FM and AFM phases is observed in the M vs. T measurements. The pinning of magnetic domain walls at the Co/Mn antiphase boundaries results in a metamagnetic-like behavior. The field dependence of thermomagnetic irreversibility and the nature of virgin curves indicate the occurrence of a kinetic arrest phenomenon, which is further verified via cooling and heating of the system in an unequal fields (CHUF) protocol. In full agreement with the ND data, a detailed analysis of critical exponents near the paramagnetic (PM)-FM phase transition also establishes YCMO as a long-range interacting mean-field system. A close examination of the temperature- and field-dependent magnetic entropy change yields an in-depth understanding of coexisting magnetically ordered and disordered phases in YCMO, leading to a comprehensive magnetic phase diagram of this multifunctional double perovskite system.

Enhanced electrochemical performance and extended cycling of resorcinol-formaldehyde derived N-doped carbon xerogel for alkali metal-ion (Li/Na/K) batteries

Resorcinol formaldehyde-derived carbon xerogel (RFC) is a versatile material with tuneable properties, synthesized through a simple sol-gel method. This study presents nitrogen-doped RF carbon xerogel (N-RFC) with 11.8 at% nitrogen doping, offering a microporous architecture ideal for alkali metal-ion (Li, Na, K) batteries. The porous N-doped framework enhances electrochemical performance by improving ion transport, increasing active storage sites, and significantly boosting metal-ion adsorption, particularly through pyrrolic nitrogen, as revealed by first-principles calculations supported by XPS analysis. N-RFC anodes showed excellent cycling stability, high-capacity retention, and fast charge/discharge capabilities, rendering them suitable for commercial applications. Notably, the N-RFC anode demonstrates high-rate long-term cycling stability, retaining its capacity of 83.5 % (188 mAh/g at 2 C-rate) and 50 % (133 mAh/g at 1250 mA/g) over 1000 cycles for Li and Na-ion batteries, respectively, favorable for commercial battery applications. Additionally, N-RFC demonstrates a reversible capacity of 120 mAh/g after 394 cycles with a retention of 82 % for K-ion batteries. The ability of the material to accommodate larger ions like Na + and K + further emphasizes its versatility and potential application in diverse alkali metal-ion battery systems.

Rapid scalable plasma processing of thin-film Li–La–Zr–O solid-state electrolytes

Solid-state electrolytes, such as lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide (LLZO), show promise as technologies for next-generation high-energy-density batteries, but commercial development has been hindered by a lack of scalable processing methods. Current fabrication methods are costly or require long annealing steps to create dense films. We report an atmospheric pressure blown-arc nitrogen plasma jet process to rapidly form sub-micrometer-thick, dense amorphous LLZO (a-LLZO) films from sol-gel precursors. Films are processed in less than 2 min, an order of magnitude faster than what has previously been reported. We demonstrate 500-nm-thick a-LLZO films processed at 350°C with an ionic conductivity of 2 × 10 −6 S/cm at 30°C and 2 × 10 −3 S/cm at 100°C and a conductance of 19 S at 100°C, the highest conductance of any LLZO phase to date. Here, the films exhibit outstanding smooth surface morphology with low defectivity, advancing atmospheric plasma processing as a scalable processing method for solid-state electrolytes.

Carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membranes derived from dip-coated precursor hollow fibers comprising nanoparticles

We report a novel approach to economically fabricate dual-layer composite nanoparticle-containing carbon molecular sieve (CMS) hollow fiber membranes having excellent gas separation performance. The economically favored process comprises dip coating engineered support layer fibers to form a dense skin layer in a CMS precursor. The coated fibers are then pyrolyzed to form a high-performance CMS hollow fiber membrane. The nano-particle containing composite carbon molecular sieve hollow fiber membranes showed very attractive selectivities and productivities. As a result, this work shows how to produce high performance CMS hollow fiber membrane by coating, which exceeds that achieved with the standard sol-gel support stabilization technique.

Ultrathin polyorganosilica membranes synthesized by oxygen-plasma treatment of polysiloxanes for H 2 /CO 2 separation

Oxygen plasma treatment of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) induces an ultrathin polyorganosilica (POSi) layer (<10 nm) on top of a PDMS membrane, leading to excellent H 2 /gas separation properties and providing a rapid and scalable way to fabricate robust silica membranes compared with conventional high-temperature and time-consuming sol-gel methods. Here, we thoroughly investigate POSi membranes derived from poly (dimethylsiloxane-co-methylhydroxidesiloxane) (poly (DMS-co-MHOS)) containing -SiOH groups that can be more easily converted to silica networks than the -SiCH 3 in PDMS. Further, the effect of the polysiloxane structure and plasma treatment conditions (including plasma generating powers, oxygen flowrate, chamber pressure, and treatment time) on the silica chemistry, structure, and H 2 /CO 2 separation properties are systematically determined to derive structure/property relationships. An optimized membrane exhibits H 2 permeance of 880 GPU and H 2 /CO 2 selectivity of 67 at 150 °C, superior to state-of-the-art polymeric membranes. The membrane retains H 2 /CO 2 selectivity as high as 46 when challenged with simulated syngas containing 2.8 mol% water vapor at 150 °C, demonstrating the potential of these POSi membranes for practical applications.
