To enable safe landing on unknown terrain, such as Europa, JPL has been developing two next-generation dual-mode lidars that can provide long range altimetry as well as dense 3D mapping in real-time during landing. In this paper, we discuss the overall concept, development strategy and report on the detailed progress of the lidar development. Besides, the use for Europa, the flexible design and reconfigurability of lidars allow for a wide range of operation on other planetary bodies.

Development of new structural materials that can withstand the extreme environments of nuclear reactors where the materials are exposed to high dose rate of ~ 30 200 dpa, high temperatures of the order of 500 1000 o C and tens of years of operation is vital for exploiting the “smallest carbon footprint energy source” to its fullest, in order to deal with the energy crisis worldwide. Recently, HEAs have shown superior irradiation properties over conventional alloys like higher resistance to defect formation, lower void swelling, limited irradiation hardening and higher microstructural stability under irradiation, making them potential structural material candidates for reactors. Proper characterization and testing of these materials are essential before they can replace the conventional alloys.
The impact of radiation dramatically increases at high altitudes in the Earth’s atmosphere and in space. Therefore, monitoring and access to radiation environment measurements are critical for estimating the radiation exposure risks of aircraft and spacecraft crews and the impact of space weather disturbances on electronics. Addressing these needs requires reliable access to multisource radiation environment data and enhanced visualization and search capabilities. The Radiation Data Portal provides an interactive web-based application for convenient search and visualization of in-flight radiation measurements.
