Oxygen carrying materials with surface modification for redox-based catalysis and methods of making and uses thereof

Redox catalysts having surface medication, methods of making redox catalysts with surface modification, and uses of the surface modified redox catalysts are provided. In some aspects, the redox catalysts include a core oxygen carrier region such as CaMnO 3 , BaMnO 3−δ , SrMnO 3−δ , Mn 2 SiO 4 , Mn 2 MgO 4−δ , La 0.8 Sr 0.2 O 3−δ , La 0.8 Sr 0.2 FeO 3−δ , Ca 9 Ti 0.1 Mn 0.9 O 3−δ , Pr 6 O 11−δ , manganese ore, or a combination thereof; and an outer shell having an average thickness of about 1-100 monolayers surrounding the outer surface of the core region. The outer shell can include, for example a salt selected such as Li 2 WO 4 , Na 2 WO 4 , K 2 WO 4 , SrWO 4 , Li 2 MoO 4 , Na 2 MoO 4 , K 2 MoO 4 , CsMoO 4 , Li 2 CO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 , K 2 CO 3 , or a combination thereof.

Thermodynamic Limits of Redox-Based Thermochemical Processes (REDOTHERM)

Solar thermochemical fuel production is a potential pathway for the production of sustain liquid drop-in fuels, which can help decarbonize the aviation and maritime sectors. In an attempt to analyze the commercial viability of this technology, several studies have been conducted, including system and technoeconomic analysis (TEA) modeling. However, most studies to date simply assume a given redox reactor efficiency, which is significantly higher than demonstrated values to date. While it is widely recognized that utilizing a counter-current flow (CF) configuration could increase the redox reactor efficiency, an over-simplification in the thermodynamic modeling may lead to unphysical results which has been included in multiple publications. The fact that the solar redox reactor is the least developed component in the process chain makes it hard to identify technology gaps and evaluate pathways to deployment at scale using this approach. In this work, a thermodynamic model for a moving oxide system has been developed, in a general form that allows to analyze the system for different redox-active materials, under a wide range of operating conditions, for both parallel and countercurrent flows. The model capabilites are demonstrated, and the model's code will be shared as an open-source on GitHub in the next few months.

Active Learning Guided Computational Discovery of Plant-Based Redoxmers for Organic Nonaqueous Redox Flow Batteries

Organic nonaqueous redox flow batteries (ONRFBs) are promising energy storage devices due to their scalability and reliance on sourceable materials. However, finding suitable redox-active organic molecules (redoxmers) for these batteries remains a challenge. Using plant-based compounds as precursors for these redoxmers can decrease their costs and environmental toxicity. In this computational study, flavonoid molecules have been examined as potential redoxmers for ONRFBs. Flavone and isoflavone derivatives were selected as catholyte (positive charge carrier) and anolyte (negative charge carrier) molecules, respectively. To drive their redox potentials to the opposite extremes, in silico derivatization was performed using a novel algorithm to generate a library of > 40000 candidate molecules that penalizes overly complex structures. A multiobjective Bayesian optimization based active learning algorithm was then used to identify best redoxmer candidates in these search spaces. Furthermore, our study provides methodologies for molecular design and optimization of natural scaffolds and highlights the need of incorporating expert chemistry awareness of the natural products and the basic rules of synthetic chemistry in machine learning.

Multielectron Organic Redoxmers for Energy-Dense Redox Flow Batteries

Redox flow battery is a highly promising stationary energy storage method but the limited energy density and high chemical cost are among the main barriers for commercialization. Multi-electron organic redoxmers represent a family of structurally tailorable candidates that can achieve multiplied energy density with decreased materials consumption, potentially resulting in a viable solution to address these challenges. In this work, the recent development of organic molecules with reversible multi-redox activities in both aqueous and nonaqueous electrolytes is reviewed. The major focus is on the fundamental correlation between the chemical structures and the functional properties of reported multi-electron organic molecules. Valuable insights are offered on rational structural design strategies for improving the relevant physico- and electro-chemical properties. Finally, the current challenges are discussed to suggest future research needs along the avenue of using the multi-electron approach to achieve energy-dense, stable, cost-effective redox flow batteries.

Development of Cr, Se, U, Sb, and Te isotopes as indicators of redox reactions, contaminant fate, and contaminant transport in aqueous systems: A review

Cr, Se, U, Sb, and Te are toxic, redox-active elements that are more mobile and environmentally problematic in their oxidized forms, and less mobile and bioavailable in their reduced forms. This chapter reviews the development of Cr, Se, U, Sb, and Te isotope ratio measurements as new indicators of redox reactions and contaminant migration. Reliable analytical methods exist, but are still evolving. Understanding of isotopic fractionation induced by various (bio)geochemical processes has been explored in dozens of publications, yet is far from complete: Reduction reactions, the major driver of isotopic variation, have been relatively well studied. However, the magnitude of fractionation is variable and the systematics of that variation are still being explored. Isotopic fractionation induced by oxidation reactions is not well understood. Non-redox reactions, which involve smaller changes in bonding of these elements, tend to induce less isotopic fractionation, but can nonetheless cause significant isotopic shifts. Field applications of Cr, Se, U isotope ratios have demonstrated that they are useful as indicators of reduction in natural systems. A few studies suggest they are also useful as indicators of oxidation and contaminant sources. The physical and chemical complexity of groundwater systems hinders accurate quantitative interpretation of Cr, Se, U isotope data using simple models. Numerical models have been developed that capture the behavior of complex, coupled systems and enable the most effective extraction of information from field data sets.

Lattice Oxygen Redox Reversibility Modulation in Enhancing the Cycling Stability of Li-Rich Cathode Materials

The practical application of lithium-rich layered oxides is prohibited by the drawbacks such as severe capacity and voltage degradation resulting from unstable oxygen redox environment and the accompanied irreversible oxygen release. In this report a facile and effective strategy is proposed to regulate the oxygen redox chemistry via foreign Fe doping and its induced intrinsic transition metal (TM) doping as well as the in situ constructed spinel surface layer. The Fe doping, together with the induced intrinsic TM dual doping, can stabilize the lattice oxygen in the bulk due to the formed stronger Fe—O bond, and restrain the irreversible TM migration and then the undesirable phase transformation. More importantly, thermodynamical energy barrier of oxygen activation is dramatically decreased by the O 2p–Fe 3d charge-transfer, allowing stable oxygen redox activity. And the pre-constructed spinel layer can effectively stabilize the surface lattice oxygen and suppress harmful interfacial side-reactions. Such a simple optimizing method make the modified cathode exhibit a high specific capacity of 298 mAh g -1 at 0.2 C, outstanding cycling stability with a superior capacity and voltage retentions of 92.5% and 90.8%, respectively, after 400 cycles at 1 C. This study provides a new direction for developing advanced Li-ion batteries.

A Flexible, Redox-Active, Aqueous Electrolyte-Based Asymmetric Supercapacitor with High Energy Density Based on Keratin-Derived Renewable Carbon

This work exploits the advantage of asymmetric configuration over symmetric supercapacitor in designing high energy density flexible devices from two active electrode materials–keratin-based renewable-resource hierarchically porous carbon and hydrous ruthenium oxide (RuO 2 ). Here, the asymmetric device exhibits significantly high capacitance. Conventional estimation of energy storage parameters, however, cannot be applied for devices with a Faradaic energy storage contribution via redox charge transfer mechanism. Therefore, this work applies a precise measurement of pseudocapacitance contribution at various scan rates to correct the device data that reveals effective capacitance of 120 F g –1 with the energy density of 37 W h kg –1 at 776 W kg –1 . It also retains excellent rate capability, >74% at high current density 25 A g –1 . The charge storage activity and device stability can be further enhanced by introducing redox-active electrolytes that improve specific capacitance, but the rate capabilities deteriorate at high current densities. Further, the principle of asymmetric electrode design is applied to fabricate a bending-tolerant, flexible device by depositing active electrode material on wire-shaped current collector followed by coupling those separated with polyvinyl alcohol gel containing redox electrolyte; it yields 36.8 mF cm –1 specific capacitance at a 0.2 mA cm –1 current density.

Near Neutral pH Redox Flow Battery with Low Permeability and Long-Lifetime Phosphonated Viologen Active Species

A highly stable phosphonate-functionalized viologen is introduced in this work as the redox-active material in a negative potential electrolyte for aqueous redox flow batteries (ARFBs) operating at nearly neutral pH. The solubility is 1.23 m and the reduction potential is the lowest of any substituted viologen utilized in a flow battery, reaching –0.462 V versus SHE at pH = 9. The negative charges in both the oxidized and the reduced states of 1,1'-bis(3-phosphonopropyl)-[4,4'-bipyridine]-1,1'-diium dibromide ( BPP–Vi ) effect low permeability in cation exchange membranes and suppress a bimolecular mechanism of viologen decomposition. A flow battery pairing BPP–Vi with a ferrocyanide-based positive potential electrolyte across an inexpensive, non-fluorinated cation exchange membrane at pH = 9 exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 0.9 V and a capacity fade rate of 0.016% per day or 0.00069% per cycle. Overcharging leads to viologen decomposition, causing irreversible capacity fade. Our research introduces extremely stable, extremely low-permeating and low reduction potential redox active materials into near neutral ARFBs.

Importance of Superstructure in Stabilizing Oxygen Redox in P3‐Na 0.67 Li 0.2 Mn 0.8 O 2

Abstract Activation of oxygen redox represents a promising strategy to enhance the energy density of positive electrode materials in both lithium and sodium‐ion batteries. However, the large voltage hysteresis associated with oxidation of oxygen anions during the first charge represents a significant challenge. Here, P3‐type Na 0.67 Li 0.2 Mn 0.8 O 2 is reinvestigated and a ribbon superlattice is identified for the first time in P3‐type materials. The ribbon superstructure is maintained over cycling with very minor unit cell volume changes in the bulk while Li ions migrate reversibly between the transition metal and Na layers at the atomic scale. In addition, a range of spectroscopic techniques reveal that a strongly hybridized Mn 3d–O 2p favors ligand‐to‐metal charge transfer, also described as a reductive coupling mechanism, to stabilize reversible oxygen redox. By preparing materials under three different synthetic conditions, the degree of ordering between Li and Mn is varied. The sample with the maximum cation ordering delivers the largest capacity regardless of the voltage windows applied. These findings highlight the importance of cationic ordering in the transition metal layers, which can be tuned by synthetic control to enhance anionic redox and hence energy density in rechargeable batteries.

A Stable, Low Permeable TEMPO Catholyte for Aqueous Total Organic Redox Flow Batteries

We report aqueous organic redox flow batteries (AORFBs) are highly attractive for large-scale energy storage because of their nonflammability, low cost, and sustainability. (2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO) derivatives, a class of redox active molecules bearing air-stable free nitroxyl radicals and high redox potential (>0.8 V vs NHE), has been identified as promising catholytes for AORFBs. However, reported TEMPO based molecules are either permeable through ion exchange membranes or not chemically stable enough for long-term energy storage. Herein, a new TEMPO derivative functionalized with a dual-ammonium dicationic group, N 1 , N 1 , N 1 , N 3 , N 3 , 2, 2, 6, 6-nonamethyl-N 3 -(piperidinyloxy)propane-1,3-bis(ammonium) dichloride (N 2 -TEMPO) as a stable, low permeable catholyte for AORFBs is reported. Ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H-NMR) spectroscopic studies reveal its exceptional stability and ultra-low permeability (1.49 × 10 -12 cm 2 s -1 ). Coupled with 1,1'-bis[3-(trimethylammonio)propyl]-4,4'-bipyridinium tetrachloride ((NPr) 2 V) as an anolyte, a 1.35 V N2-TEMPO/(NPr)2V AORFB with 0.5 m electrolytes (9.05 Wh L -1 ) delivers a high power density of 114 mW cm -2 and 100% capacity retention for 400 cycles at 60 mA cm-2. At 1.0 m electrolyte concentrations, the N 2 -TEMPO/(NPr) 2 V AORFB achieves an energy density of 18.1 Wh L -1 and capacity retention of 90% for 400 cycles at 60 mA cm -2 .

An SECM-Based Spot Analysis for Redoxmer-Electrode Kinetics: Identifying Redox Asymmetries on Model Graphitic Carbon Interfaces

The fundamental process in non-aqueous redox flow battery (NRFB) operation revolves around electron transfer (ET) between a current collector electrode and redox-active organic molecules (redoxmers) in solution. Here, we present an approach utilizing scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) to evaluate interfacial ET kinetics between redoxmers and various electrode materials of interest at desired locations. This spot-analysis method relies on the measurement of heterogeneous electron transfer rate constants (k f or k b ) as a function of applied potential (E-E 0 '). As demonstrated by COMSOL simulations, this method enables the quantification of Butler-Volmer kinetic parameters, the standard heterogeneous rate constant, k 0 , and the transfer coefficient, α. Our method enabled the identification of inherent asymmetries in the ET kinetics arising during the reduction of ferrocene-based redoxmers, compared to their oxidation which displayed faster rate constants. Similar behavior was observed on a wide variety of carbon electrodes such as multi-layer graphene, highly ordered pyrolytic graphite, glassy carbon, and chemical vapor deposition-grown graphite films. However, aqueous systems and Pt do not exhibit such kinetic effects. Our analysis suggests that differential adsorption of the redoxmers is insufficient to account for our observations. Displaying a greater versatility than conventional electroanalytical methods, we demonstrate the operation of our spot analysis at concentrations up to 100 mM of redoxmer over graphite films. Looking forward, our method can be used to assess non-idealities in a variety of redoxmer/electrode/solvent systems with quantitative evaluation of kinetics for applications in redox-flow battery research.

Concentration‐dependent Cycling of Phenothiazine‐based Electrolytes in Nonaqueous Redox Flow Cells

Increasing redox-active species concentrations can improve viability for organic redox flow batteries by enabling higher energy densities, but the required concentrated solutions can become viscous and less conductive, leading to inefficient electrochemical cycling and low material utilization at higher current densities. To better understand these tradeoffs in a model system, we study a highly soluble and stable redox-active couple, N-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)phenothiazine (MEEPT), and its bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide radical cation salt (MEEPT-TFSI). We measure the physicochemical properties of electrolytes containing 0.2–1 M active species and connect these to symmetric cell cycling behavior, achieving robust cycling performance. Specifically, for a 1 M electrolyte concentration, we demonstrate 94% materials utilization, 89% capacity retention, and 99.8% average coulombic efficiency over 435 h (100 full cycles). This demonstration helps to establish potential for high-performing, concentrated nonaqueous electrolytes and highlights possible failure modes in such systems.

Characterizing the Impact of Oligomerization on Redox Flow Cell Performance

Abstract Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are hindered by complex failure modes, particularly crossover through the membrane, resulting in capacity fade and reduced cycling efficiencies. Redox‐active oligomers (RAOs) have recently been proposed for mitigating this phenomenon while maintaining sufficient transport properties; however, to date, few studies have quantified how the chemical and electrochemical properties of RAOs influence their performance in redox flow cells. Here, we demonstrate that oligomeric derivatives of 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine 1‐oxyl (TEMPO) exhibit lower diffusivities than the monomeric species but retain facile charge transfer characteristics. The size‐dependent variations in mass transport rates directly translate to differences in flow cell polarization and symmetric cycling performance. Post‐mortem analyses reveal that oligomerization does not meaningfully alter decay processes as evinced by similar capacity fade across all species. Broadly, these findings corroborate and extend upon previously developed relationships between molecular size, electrochemical properties, and flow cell performance.

Electronic Structure Distortions in Chromium Chelates Impair Redox Kinetics in Flow Batteries

Aminopolycarboxylate chelates are emerging as a promising class of electrolyte materials for aqueous redox flow batteries, offering tunable redox potentials, solubility, and pH stability through careful selection of ligands and transition metal ions. Despite their potential, the impact of molecular structure modifications on the electronic and electrochemical properties of these chelates remains underexplored. Here, in this study, we examine how introducing a hydroxyl group, often employed for its solubilizing properties, to the backbone of CrPDTA, a reference chelate material, significantly changes the thermodynamics and kinetics of the chelate's redox process. We correlate changes in molecular and electronic structures to different electrochemical responses resulting from the hydroxyl addition and show that the introduction of this functional group leads to a distortion in the octahedral coordination of chromium. Furthermore, increased anisotropic spin density and nonintegral oxidation state changes in the Cr metal center result in a larger barrier for electron transfer in CrPDTA‐OH. It is demonstrated that preserving a hexacoordinate chelate structure across a broad pH range is crucial for efficient flow battery application and it is emphasized that ligand modifications must avoid distorting the octahedral coordination of the transition metal.

Bifunctional Ionic Covalent Organic Networks for Enhanced Simultaneous Removal of Chromium(VI) and Arsenic(V) Oxoanions via Synergetic Ion Exchange and Redox Process

Chromium (VI) and arsenic (V) oxoanions are major toxic heavy metal pollutants in water threatening both human health and environmental safety. Here, the development is reported of a bifunctional ionic covalent organic network (iCON) with integrated guanidinium and phenol units to simultaneously sequester chromate and arsenate in water via a synergistic ion-exchange-redox process. The guanidinium groups facilitate the ion-exchange-based adsorption of chromate and arsenate at neutral pH with fast kinetics and high uptake capacity, whereas the integrated phenol motifs mediate the Cr(VI)/Cr(III) redox process that immobilizes chromate and promotes the adsorption of arsenate via the formation of Cr(III)-As(V) cluster/complex. The synergistic ion-exchange-redox approach not only pushes high adsorption efficiency for both chromate and arsenate but also upholds a balanced Cr/As uptake ratio regardless of the change in concentration and the presence of interfering oxoanions.

Redox‐Functionalized Semiconductor Interfaces for Photoelectrochemical Separations

Redox-mediated electrosorption is a promising platform for selective electrochemical (EC) separations, due to its molecular selectivity, high uptake, and tunability for target ions. However, the electrical energy required is mainly generated by non-renewable energy sources, which limits its sustainability and overall impact to decarbonization. Here, a redox-mediated photoelectrochemical (PEC) separation process using polyvinyl ferrocene functionalized TiO 2 nanorod electrodes is proposed, which integrates direct solar energy as a driver for the selective electrosorption. The photoelectrochemically-driven oxidation and reduction with both homogeneous and heterogeneous ferrocene-systems is investigated to establish the underlying mechanism. The PEC system can separate heavy metal oxyanions at lower voltages or even without electrical energy. At 0.3 V versus SCE, a 124 mg g −1 uptake for Mo is achieved, which is comparable to the performance of EC cells at 0.75 V versus SCE. Thus, PEC systems not only can generate energy for spontaneous redox-separations, but also can reduce electrical energy consumption by 51.4% compared to EC cells for separation processes when coupled with an external electrical energy.

Experimental evaluation of the role of redox during glauconite-CO 2 -brine interactions

Greensands formations are globally abundant sedimentary rocks rich in Fe clays (typically glauconite) that commonly contain natural hydrocarbon accumulations and may be important reservoirs for geologic storage of anthropogenic CO 2 . Diagenesis in greensands is commonly accompanied by the conversion of primary glauconite to siderite (FeCO 3 ), a process that could be exploited for the permanent trapping of CO 2 . Importantly, siderite formation after glauconite requires that the mostly oxidized Fe in the primary Fe clay minerals is reduced during diagenetic interactions. Here, we explore the effect of solution redox state on the stability of glauconite in sandstones with implications for the diagenetic and/or engineered formation of siderite. We performed two flow-through experiments on intact, glauconite-rich sandstone cores at 150 °C and 150 bar. Both experiments employed a 1 mol NaCl/kg, 0.1 mol NaHCO 3 /kg solution charged with ~0.58 mol CO 2 /kg solution, but the redox state of the injected fluid was manipulated between experiments in order to compare glauconite reactivity and siderite saturation state at oxidizing and reducing end-member conditions. After reaction with the oxidizing (O 2 (aq) ≈ 6 μmol/kg) fluid, chemical and Mӧssbauer spectroscopic analyses indicate the production of Fe(III)-oxy/hydroxide minerals from glauconite, whereas, in the reducing (H 2 (aq) ≈ 5–40 mmol/kg) experiment, thermodynamic calculations and coupled chemical, mineralogical, and Mӧssbauer analyses suggest glauconite dissolution and precipitation of an Fe(II) mineral, likely siderite, and minor magnetite formation. These experimental results, along with thermodynamic calculations, confirm that solution redox state is the master variable dictating siderite formation in greensands.

Evidence of redox cycling as a sub-mechanism in hydrogen production during ethanol steam reforming over La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x perovskite oxide catalysts

Ethanol steam reforming (ESR) is of societal interest. Here, in this work, experiments were conducted to ascertain if some of the H 2 is produced by a redox cycle involving H 2 O filling oxygen vacancies over reducible oxide catalysts. Redox cycling experiments were performed over La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x (100) in ultra-high vacuum. It was found that H 2 was produced from redox cycling with alternating ethanol and water exposures over La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x (100), with both half-cycles occurring at temperatures ≤800 K. In the first half-cycle, ethanol ‘directly’ reduced the surface to create oxygen vacancies (not by a CO intermediate), and in the second half-cycle water filled oxygen vacancies to make H 2 . The H 2 production during the water exposure has a half-cycle turnover frequency of >3.2 × 10 -2 molecules site -1 s -1 in the temperature range of 700–800 K, which is fast enough to be part of the ESR full catalytic cycle. Flowing both reactant gases together, ethanol and water, over La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x (100) and La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3-x powders significantly increases hydrogen production compared to pure ethanol. The results suggest that steady state ESR includes a sub-mechanism of ethanol ‘directly’ reducing the surface to create oxygen vacancy, and water filling oxygen vacancy to make some of the H 2 by a Mars van Krevelen type mechanism.
