Joint Determination of Reactor Antineutrino Spectra from U 235 and Pu 239 Fission by Daya Bay and PROSPECT

A joint determination of the reactor antineutrino spectra resulting from the fission of 235U and 239Pu has been carried out by the Daya Bay and PROSPECT collaborations. This Letter reports the level of consistency of 235U spectrum measurements from the two experiments and presents new results from a joint analysis of both data sets. The measurements are found to be consistent. The combined analysis reduces the degeneracy between the dominant 235U and 239Pu isotopes and improves the uncertainty of the 235U spectral shape to about 3%. The 235U and 239Pu antineutrino energy spectra are unfolded from the jointly deconvolved reactor spectra using the Wiener-SVD unfolding method, providing a data-based reference for other reactor antineutrino experiments and other applications. This is the first measurement of the 235U and 239Pu spectra based on the combination of experiments at low- and highly enriched uranium reactors.

History of Pu-238 Production Restart Efforts at Idaho National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory

In the early 2010s, efforts to restart production in the U.S. of plutonium-238 heat source (HSPu) material for NASA deep space missions were initiated. Processes, procedures, hardware, and chemical separations were developed and implemented to enable the production of heat source material at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Here, this review provides an overview of the timeline and efforts associated with the restart of production, as well as upcoming efforts to increase production.

Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of aging in δ -Pu

We have developed a first-passage kinetic Monte Carlo approach for materials aging to investigate the sensitivity of void swelling to model parameters, including helium bubble density and size distribution. In addition to explicitly accounting for the spatial distribution of individual point defects, bubbles, and voids, our approach can simulate total doses equivalent to 100 years of natural aging on statistically representative volumes of materials. This technique enables us to study the effects on swelling and radiation damage evolution due to temperature and dose rate (as altered in artificially aged experiments), differences in effective interaction radii between vacancies and interstitials, and varying defect diffusion activation energies, while providing more detailed information than previous rate-equation based approaches. In conclusion, our results indicate that spatial effects that are not modeled in mean-field rate theories could play a significant role in void swelling initiation and growth for certain regimes of model parameters.

Small-Scale Recycling of Irradiated Uranium and Transuranic Elements (Np, Pu) Using 3D-Printed Centrifugal Contactors

Niowave’s technology employs super-conducting linear accelerators to induce fission on low-enriched uranium targets followed by subsequent radiochemical processing to purify 99 Mo as well as a number of other fission products. Argonne’s Radiochemistry group (CFCT), in partnership with Niowave and UNLV, will be managing the TCF project to develop a closed-cycle loop for Niowave’s uranium targets. The roles of the DOE national laboratory partner will be to 1) develop a basic chemical understanding of the separations and purifications required to meet industry standards, 2) initiate the additive manufacturing (AM) of the centrifugal contactors, 3) develop a process flowsheet using Argonne computer codes.

Monitoring Radiochemical Processing Streams for the 238 Pu Supply Program with Process Pulse II

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is developing advanced spectroscopic and real-time monitoring capabilities to improve the timeliness of analytical measurements and process decisions for the 238Pu Supply Program. Reducing the time, resources, and costs associated with each production campaign is critical because overlapping campaigns will be required to meet the production goals of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Real-time, in situ analytical measurements in the heavily shielded hot cells at the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC) will allow for rapid process information feedback and operational benefits that help the 238Pu supply program scale-up production efforts. Noteworthy steps were taken during Campaign 5 to establish the ability to monitor processing streams in real time with spectrophotometry and a commercially available online monitoring software called The Unscrambler X Process Pulse II (PP) multivariate statistical process monitoring system by Camo Analytics (version 5.60). PP automates univariate-type calculations within the software itself and executes multivariate models built using The Unscrambler X (version 10.4 or newer). The Unscrambler is a commercially available data analysis software made by the same company. PP is composed of easy-to-use-tools for all personnel, including data scientists and technicians. The software can be used to plot analyte concentration profiles, spectral data, and other process variables in real time. All process data are represented in a single view with interactive charts useful for viewing how a process evolves over time.

NWAL Validation Report for U Assay by Potentiometric Titration (Modified Davies and Gray Technique) and U and PU Assay by Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry

SRNL Sensing & Metrology, previously Analytical Laboratory, is a member of the IAEA Network of Analytical Laboratories for Nuclear Material Measurement that is qualified to provide Uranium and Plutonium isotopic analysis of nuclear materials by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry. As part of the membership, SRNL participated in the 2019 Nuclear Material Round Robin to maintain the qualification to provide isotopic analysis. SRNL also participated with the additional intent to qualify Uranium Assay by Potentiometric Titration (Davies and Gray method) and Uranium and Plutonium Isotope Dilution by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry as part of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Network of Analytical Laboratories. The proficiency test exercise was conducted by the Office of Safeguards Analytical Services, Department of Safeguards.

Fission Product Yields of 233 U and 239 Pu by Neutron-Induced Fission at Neutron Energies from 0.18-140 MeV [Slides]

Nuclear fission is an important process with applications in astrophysics, nuclear reactors, and stockpile stewardship. Despite having been discovered over 80 years ago, fission is not fully described by a predictive model. This study will show fission product mass yields and total kinetic energies (TKE) across a large range of incident neutron energies for future refinement of fission models. 233U(n,f) data is used to verify features and structures on a previous experiment and compared against fission models. 239Pu(n,f) data will be analyzed to show new data at higher neutron energies using techniques to handle fission in the presence of alphas. 252Cf(sf) data will be used for calibration and benchmarking with a thin-backed target.
