A uniformly valid solution for motion about the interior libration point of the perturbed elliptic-restricted problem

Bounded motion about Lagrange collinear libration points is considered for a perturbed elliptic-restricted problem. A practical application is the motion of a satellite near a libration point collinear with the sun and the earth-moon barycenter. Such a system is treated here as an earth-sun-satellite elliptic restricted problem with lunar perturbations. The method of dual time scales is utilized to develop a uniformly valid three-dimensional analytical solution to the satellite's equations of motion. The analytical development applies somewhat generally to that class of four-body problems where the second primary mass is much greater than the first, and the third primary mass is much greater than the second.

Treatment of multiaxial creep-fatigue by strainrange partitioning

Strainrange partitioning is a recently developed method for treating creep-fatigue interaction at elevated temperature. Most of the work to date has been on uniaxially loaded specimens, where as practical applications often involve load multiaxiality. It is shown how the method can be extended to treat multiaxiality through a set of rules for combining the strain components in the three principal directions. Closed hysteresis loops, as well as plastic and creep strain ratcheting are included. An application to hold-time tests in torsion will be used to illustrate the approach.

Facts and fiction of learning systems

The methodology that will provide the updated precision for the hardware control and the advanced decision making and planning in the software control is called learning systems and intelligent control. It was developed theoretically as an alternative for the nonsystematic heuristic approaches of artificial intelligence experiments and the inflexible formulation of modern optimal control methods. Its basic concepts are discussed and some feasibility studies of some practical applications are presented.

The N.A.S.A. earth and ocean dynamics programme

Practical applications of NASA space systems, science, and technology to the study of oceans and solid earth are discussed. Goals involving earth dynamics include earthquake hazard assessment and alleviation, and global surveying and mapping, while goals involving ocean dynamics include the determination of ocean currents and circulation, and the monitoring of ocean surface conditions. Satellites used to obtain data are described, and projects such as the study of open ocean tides and earth motion determination are reviewed, with consideration given to the techniques (e.g., laser ranging, satellite-to-satellite track) used in these studies. Several physical phenomena, the extent to which they presently can be measured, and possible future requirements for more accurate measurements are examined.

Properties of satellite orbits - Ephemerides, dynamical constants, and satellite phenomena

A short account is given of the history of the observation of the Galilean satellites, with an emphasis on early orbital work and practical applications thereof to world mapping and navigation. The general character of satellite motion is described from a geometric and physical point of view without reference to mathematics. This is followed by a similar discussion of ordinary and mutual satellite phenomena. The accuracies of published ephemerides are discussed on the basis of the observations and theories available for the various satellites. The ephemeris tables need to be revised and, perhaps, partly replaced by well-documented computer programs. The determination of physical parameters (planetary masses and oblatenesses; masses, sizes, and albedo maps of satellites) from positional observations of satellites and photometric observations of ordinary and mutual satellite phenomena is discussed.

Modal characteristics of crossed rectangular waveguides

An integral-eigenvalue problem is formulated for a crossed rectangular waveguide and solved numerically by applying the Ritz-Galerkin method. Theoretical formulas for determining cutoff frequencies and modal-field expressions are obtained for the specific case of a symmetrical rectangular waveguide, cutoff frequencies are calculated numerically, and the results are verified by comparison with available experimental data. The modal fields are expressed in terms of Fourier series for both TE and TM modes. It is found that the bandwidth can be increased to a maximum of 38% when the waveguide dimensions are properly selected and that the numerical results are in agreement with those computed by the method of partial regions. Some practical applications of the modal-field equations are briefly noted.

Effect of digitally computed drives on performance of continuous linear systems

The dependence of the Bode response upon digital sample rate for first and second order linear continuous systems driven by a digital computer is derived. Open loop lead compensation introduced within the digital computer in order to increase the system bandwidth is also examined in terms of derived Bode responses. This introduction of lead terms within the digital computer is shown to be effective at operating frequencies below the Nyquist frequency. In most practical applications, empirical determination of these lead coefficients appears to be a sufficient compensation method.

Urban area delineation and detection of change along the urban-rural boundary as derived from LANDSAT digital data

LANDSAT digital multispectral scanner data, in conjunction with supporting ground truth, were investigated to determine their utility in delineation of urban-rural boundaries. The digital data for the metropolitan areas of Washington, D. C.; Austin, Texas; and Seattle, Washingtion; were processed using an interactive image processing system. Processing focused on identification of major land cover types typical of the zone of transition from urban to rural landscape, and definition of their spectral signatures. Census tract boundaries were input into the interactive image processing system along with the LANDSAT single and overlayed multiple date MSS data. Results of this investigation indicate that satellite collected information has a practical application to the problem of urban area delineation and to change detection.

Statistical principles of inversion theory

Statistical methods are used to deal with the inverse problem of radiative transfer. All the available information about an unknown profile can be expressed in the form of values of functions of that profile and error estimates of these values. Estimation theory shows how these values are combined to give an estimate of the unknown profile and its error covariance. Many inversion methods are expressed in this form, although the error estimate is not usually carried out. Practical applications are described, both for inversion of individual profiles, and the global analysis of satellite data.

Experiment requirements: Vitamin D metabolites and bone demineralization, Spacelab 2, experiment no. 1

As a contribution toward an understanding of the molecular basis of bone loss, mineral imbalance, and increasing fecal calcium under conditions of prolonged space flight, the blood levels of biologically active vitamin D metabolites of flight crew members will be quantitatively measured. Prior to the mission, the refinement of existing and the development of new techniques for the assay of all vitamin D metabolites will provide an arsenal of methods suitable for a wide range of metabolite levels. In terms of practical application, the analysis of human and animal plasma samples, Spacelab crew plasma samples, and flight hardware are envisioned.

Optimal control theory (OWEM) applied to a helicopter in the hover and approach phase

A major difficulty in the practical application of linear-quadratic regulator theory is how to choose the weighting matrices in quadratic cost functions. The control system design with optimal weighting matrices was applied to a helicopter in the hover and approach phase. The weighting matrices were calculated to extremize the closed loop total system damping subject to constraints on the determinants. The extremization is really a minimization of the effects of disturbances, and interpreted as a compromise between the generalized system accuracy and the generalized system response speed. The trade-off between the accuracy and the response speed is adjusted by a single parameter, the ratio of determinants. By this approach an objective measure can be obtained for the design of a control system. The measure is to be determined by the system requirements.

Waste heat utilization in industrial processes

A survey is given of new developments in heat exchangers and heat pumps. With respect to practical applications, internal criteria for plant operation are discussed. Possibilities of government support are pointed out. Waste heat steam generators and waste heat aggregates for hot water generation or in some cases for steam superheating are used. The possibilities of utilization can be classified according to the economic improvements and according to their process applications, for example, gascooling. Examples are presented for a large variety of applications.

Effect of chordwise forces and deformations and deformations due to steady lift on wing flutter

This investigation explores the effects of chordwise forces and deformations and steady-state deformation due to lift on the static and dynamic aeroelastic stability of a uniform cantilever wing. Results of this analysis are believed to have practical applications for high-performance sailplanes and certain RPV's. The airfoil cross section is assumed to be symmetric and camber bending is neglected. Motions in vertical bending, fore-and-aft bending, and torsion are considered. A differential equation model is developed, which included the nonlinear elastic bending-torsion coupling that accompanies even moderate deflections. A linearized expansion in small time-dependent deflections is made about a steady flight condition. The stability determinant of the linearized system then contains coefficients that depend on steady displacements. Loads derived from two-dimensional incompressible aerodynamic theory are used to obtain the majority of the results, but cases using three-dimensional subsonic compressible theory are also studied. The stability analysis is carried out in terms of the dynamically uncoupled natural modes of vibration of the uniform cantilever.

A split-recoupled-semidirect computational technique applied to transonic flow over lifting airfoils

A new version of the semidirect iterative method eliminates significant restrictions of previous versions of the method. A semidirect method solves finite-difference equations by a rapid globally implicit iterative process driven by a fast direct elliptic solver. The new approach can treat complex systems of equations in an efficient 'correction form', and allows the use of general, nonorthogonal, boundary-fitted coordinate transformations. These features are expected to lead to significant practical applications with conservation-equation systems in either two or three dimensions. The present application to the full potential equations for steady transonic flow over an airfoil at angle of attack illustrates the utility of the technique.

Discrete-time pilot model

Pilot behavior is considered as a discrete-time process where the decision making has a sequential nature. This model differs from both the quasilinear model which follows from classical control theory and from the optimal control model which considers the human operator as a Kalman estimator-predictor. An additional factor considered is that the pilot's objective may not be adequately formulated as a quadratic cost functional to be minimized, but rather as a more fuzzy measure of the closeness with which the aircraft follows a reference trajectory. All model parameters, in the digital program simulating the pilot's behavior, were successfully compared in terms of standard-deviation and performance with those of professional pilots in IFR configuration. The first practical application of the model was in the study of its performance degradation when the aircraft model static margin decreases.
