Buckling behavior of long symmetrically laminated plates subjected to compression, shear, and inplane bending loads

A parametric study of the buckling behavior of infinitely long symmetrically laminated anisotropic plates subjected to combined loadings are presented. The loading conditions considered are pure inplane bending, transverse tension and compression, and shear. Results obtained using a special purpose analysis are presented for clamped and simply supported plates. An important finding of the study is that the effects of anisotropy are much more pronounced in shear-loaded plates than in axial compression-loaded plates and plates loaded by pure inplane bending.

Application of the variational-asymptotical method to composite plates

A method is developed for the 3D analysis of laminated plate deformation which is an extension of a variational-asymptotical method by Atilgan and Hodges (1991). Both methods are based on the treatment of plate deformation by splitting the 3D analysis into linear through-the-thickness analysis and 2D plate analysis. Whereas the first technique tackles transverse shear deformation in the second asymptotical approximation, the present method simplifies its treatment and restricts it to the first approximation. Both analytical techniques are applied to the linear cylindrical bending problem, and the strain and stress distributions are derived and compared with those of the exact solution. The present theory provides more accurate results than those of the classical laminated-plate theory for the transverse displacement of 2-, 3-, and 4-layer cross-ply laminated plates. The method can give reliable estimates of the in-plane strain and displacement distributions.

Models of convection-driven tectonic plates - A comparison of methods and results

Recent numerical studies of convection in the earth's mantle have included various features of plate tectonics. This paper describes three methods of modeling plates: through material properties, through force balance, and through a thin power-law sheet approximation. The results obtained are compared using each method on a series of simple calculations. From these results, scaling relations between the different parameterizations are developed. While each method produces different degrees of deformation within the surface plate, the surface heat flux and average plate velocity agree to within a few percent. The main results are not dependent upon the plate modeling method and herefore are representative of the physical system modeled.

Spaceflight and age affect tibial epiphyseal growth plate histomorphometry

Growth plate histomorphometry of rats flown aboard the Soviet biosatellite Cosmos 2044, a 14-day spaceflight, was compared with that of control groups. In growth plates of flight animals, there was a significant increase in cell number per column and height of the proliferative zone and a reduction in height and cell number in the hypertrophy/calcification zone. No significant differences were found in matrix organization at the ultrastructural level of flight animals, indicating that although spacefligfht continues to affect bone growth of 15-wk-old rats, extracellular matrix is not altered in the same manner as seen previously in younger animals. All groups showed growth plate characteristics attributed to aging: lack of calcification zone, reduced hypertrophy zone, and unraveling of collagen fibrils. Tail-suspended controls did not differ from other controls in any of the parameters measured. The results suggest that growth plates of older rats are less responsive to unloading by spaceflight or suspension than those of younger rats and provide new evidence about the modifying effect of spaceflight on the growth plate.

Influence of transverse-shear and large-deformation effects on the low-speed impact response of laminated composite plates

An analytical procedure is presented for determining the transient response of simply supported, rectangular laminated composite plates subjected to impact loads from airgun-propelled or dropped-weight impactors. A first-order shear-deformation theory is included in the analysis to represent properly any local short-wave-length transient bending response. The impact force is modeled as a locally distributed load with a cosine-cosine distribution. A double Fourier series expansion and the Timoshenko small-increment method are used to determine the contact force, out-of-plane deflections, and in-plane strains and stresses at any plate location due to an impact force at any plate location. The results of experimental and analytical studies are compared for quasi-isotropic laminates. The results indicate that using the appropriate local force distribution for the locally loaded area and including transverse-shear-deformation effects in the laminated plate response analysis are important. The applicability of the present analytical procedure based on small deformation theory is investigated by comparing analytical and experimental results for combinations of quasi-isotropic laminate thicknesses and impact energy levels. The results of this study indicate that large-deformation effects influence the response of both 24- and 32-ply laminated plates, and that a geometrically nonlinear analysis is required for predicting the response accurately.

Three-dimensional solutions for the thermal buckling and sensitivity derivatives of temperature-sensitive multilayered angle-ply plates

Analytic three-dimensional thermoelasticity solutions are presented for the thermal buckling of multilayered angle-ply composite plates with temperature-dependent thermoelastic properties. Both the critical temperatures and the sensitivity derivatives are computed. The sensitivity derivatives measure the sensitivity of the buckling response to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the plate. The plates are assumed to have rectangular geometry and an antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. The temperature is assumed to be independent of the surface coordinates, but has an arbitrary symmetric variation through the thickness of the plate. The prebuckling deformations are accounted for. Numerical results are presented, for plates subjected to uniform temperature increase, showing the effects of temperature-dependent material properties on the prebuckling stresses, critical temperatures, and their sensitivity derivatives.

Dual passband dichroic plate for X-band

A need arose in the NASA Deep Space Network, a worldwide tracking system, for a dichroic plate that would be transparent at two desired frequency bands in the X-band region and be totally reflective at S-band. The dual-passband dichroic plate that was developed to meet the technical requirements is a thick metallic plate having an array of periodic round holes filled with Teflon plugs. Test results on an experimental prototype plate indicate that it is technically possible to design a dielectrically filled dichroic plate that meets all of these technical requirements.

Shear buckling response of tailored, rectangular, composite plates

The concept of stiffness tailoring for improved shear buckling resistance of rectangular composite plates is investigated analytically. The tailoring involves only the redistribution of the given material with given orientations to create beneficial stiffening patterns across the planform of the plate. The resulting local nonuniformities in thickness and membrane and bending stiffness combine to change the buckling response of the plate. The weight and average membrane shear stiffness are essentially unaffected by the tailoring. Practical limitations on the degree to which the tailoring may be carried out are shown to govern most designs. Improvements in the shear buckling load on the order of 50 percent are shown possible with monolithic tailoring. Tailored sandwich concepts, in which a light-weight core material is added to keep both plate surfaces flat, can produce improvements well over 100 percent in specific buckling loads compared with uniform composite plates.

A variable-order laminated plate theory based on the variational-asymptotical method

The variational-asymptotical method is a mathematical technique by which the three-dimensional analysis of laminated plate deformation can be split into a linear, one-dimensional, through-the-thickness analysis and a nonlinear, two-dimensional, plate analysis. The elastic constants used in the plate analysis are obtained from the through-the-thickness analysis, along with approximate, closed-form three-dimensional distributions of displacement, strain, and stress. In this paper, a theory based on this technique is developed which is capable of approximating three-dimensional elasticity to any accuracy desired. The asymptotical method allows for the approximation of the through-the-thickness behavior in terms of the eigenfunctions of a certain Sturm-Liouville problem associated with the thickness coordinate. These eigenfunctions contain all the necessary information about the nonhomogeneities along the thickness coordinate of the plate and thus possess the appropriate discontinuities in the derivatives of displacement. The theory is presented in this paper along with numerical results for the eigenfunctions of various laminated plates.

Bending of Rectangular Plates with Large Deflections

The solution of von Karman's fundamental equations for large deflections of plates is presented for the case of a simply supported rectangular plate under combined edge compression and lateral loading. Numerical solutions are given for square plates and for rectangular plates with a width-span ratio of 3:1. The effective widths under edge compression are compared with effective widths according to von Karman, Bengston, Marguerre, and Cox and with experimental results by Ramberg, McPherson, and Levy. The deflections for a square plate under lateral pressure are compared with experimental and theoretical results by Kaiser. It is found that the effective widths agree closely with Marguerre's formula and with the experimentally observed values and that the deflections agree with the experimental results and with Kaiser's work.

Behavior of a Cantilever Plate Under Rapid-heating Conditions

The temperature distributions encountered in thin solid wings subjected to aerodynamic heating induce thermal stresses that may effectively reduce the stiffness of the wing. The effects of this reduction in stiffness were investigated experimentally by rapidly heating the edges of a cantilever plate. The midplane thermal stresses imposed by the nonuniform temperature distribution caused the plate to buckle torsionally, increased the deformations of the plate under a constant applied torque, and reduced the frequency of the first two natural modes of vibration. By using small-deflection theory and employing energy methods, the effect of nonuniform heating on the plate stiffness was calculated. The theory predicts the general effects of the thermal stresses, but becomes inadequate as the temperature difference increases and plate deflections become large.

Drag of wings with end plates

In this report a formula for calculating the induced drag of multiplanes with end plates is derived. The frictional drag of the end plates are used, is sufficiently large to increase the efficiency of the wing. Curves showing the reduction of drag for monoplanes and biplanes are constructed; the influence of gap-chord ratio, aspect ratio, and height of end plate are determined for typical cases. The method of obtaining the reduction of drag for a multiplane is described. Comparisons are made of calculated and experimental results obtained in wind tunnel tests with airfoils of various aspect ratios and end plates of various sizes. The agreement between calculated and experimental results is good. Analysis of the experimental results shows that the shape and section of the end plates are important.

Square plate with clamped edges under normal pressure producing large deflections

A theoretical analysis is given for the stresses and deflections of a square plate with clamped edges under normal pressure producing large deflections. Values of the bending stress and membrane stress at the center of the plate and at the midpoint of the edge are given for center deflections up to 1.9 times the plate thickness. The shape of the deflected surface is given for low pressures and for the highest pressure considered. Convergence of solution is considered and it is estimated that the possible error is less than 2 percent. The results are compared with the only previous approximate analysis known to the author and agrees within 5 percent. They are also shown to compare favorably with the known exact solutions for the long rectangular plate and the circular plate.

Three point lead screw positioning apparatus for a cavity tuning plate

Three lead screws are provided for adjusting the position of a traversing plate. Each of the three lead screws is threaded through a collar that is press fitted through the center of one of three pinion gears. A sun gear meshes with all three pinion gears and transversely moves the three lead screws upon actuation of a drive gear. The drive gear meshes with the sun gear and is driven by a handle or servomotor. When the handle or servomotor rotates the drive gear, the sun gear rotates causing the three pinion gears to rotate, thus, causing transverse movement of the three lead screws and, accordingly, transverse movement of the transversing plate. When the drive gear rotates, the traversing plate is driven in and out of a microwave cavity. Thus, the length or size of the cavity can be tuned while maintaining the traversing plate in an exact parallel relationship with an opposing plate on another end of the cavity.

Performance of the X-/Ka/KABLE-band dichroic plate in the DSS-13 beam waveguide antenna

The first Ka-band downlink demonstration was recently carried out by the Ka-Band Link Experiment (KABLE) in association with the Mars Observer spacecraft. In order to support the mission, a dichroic plate was required in the DSS-13 beam waveguide antenna to allow simultaneous X- and Ka-band operation. An X-/ Ka-/ KABLE-band dichroic plate was designed to transmit Ka-band downlink (31.8-32.3 GHz), Ka-band uplink (34.2-34.7 GHz), and KABLE (33.6-33.8 GHz) frequencies, while reflecting X-band (8.4-8.5 GHz). A computer program was developed for the analysis of a dichroic plate with rectangular apertures by using the mode-matching method. The plate was then fabricated and tested. The reflection, group delay, and noise temperature in the antenna system due to the dichroic plate were measured. The experimental results show good agreement with theoretical prediction.

An improved plating process

An alternative to the immersion process for the electrodeposition of chromium from aqueous solutions on the inside diameter (ID) of long tubes is described. The Vessel Plating Process eliminates the need for deep processing tanks, large volumes of solutions, and associated safety and environmental concerns. Vessel Plating allows the process to be monitored and controlled by computer thus increasing reliability, flexibility and quality. Elimination of the trivalent chromium accumulation normally associated with ID plating is intrinsic to the Vessel Plating Process. The construction and operation of a prototype Vessel Plating Facility with emphasis on materials of construction, engineered and operational safety and a unique system for rinse water recovery are described.

Plate tectonics and crustal deformation around the Japanese Islands

We analyze over a century of geodetic data to study crustal deformation and plate motion around the Japanese Islands, using the block-fault model for crustal deformation developed by Matsu'ura et al. (1986). We model the area including the Japanese Islands with 19 crustal blocks and 104 faults based on the distribution of active faults and seismicity. Geodetic data are used to obtain block motions and average slip rates of faults. This geodetic model predicts that the Pacific plate moves N deg 69 +/- 2 deg W at about 80 +/- 3 mm/yr relative to the Eurasian plate which is much lower than that predicted in geologic models. Substantial aseismic slip occurs on the subduction boundaries. The block containing the Izu Peninsula may be separated from the rigid part of the Philippine Sea plate. The faults on the coast of Japan Sea and the western part of the Median Tectonic Line have slip rates exceeding 4 mm/yr, while the Fossa Magna does not play an important role in the tectonics of the central Japan. The geodetic model requires the division of northeastern Japan, contrary to the hypothesis that northeastern Japan is a part of the North American plate. Owing to rapid convergence, the seismic risk in the Nankai trough may be larger than that of the Tokai gap.
