Low spin spectroscopy of neutron-rich Cl 43 , 44 , 45 via β - and β n decay

In this article, β - decay studies of neutron-rich isotopes 43,45 S performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory are reported. β -delayed $\gamma$ transitions were detected by an array of 16 clover detectors surrounding the Beta Counting Station, which consists of a 40×40 double-sided silicon strip detector followed by a single-sided silicon strip detector. β -decay half-lives were extracted for 43,45 S by correlating implants and decays in the pixelated implant detector and by considering further coincidences with $\gamma$ transitions in the daughter nuclei. Further, the level structures of 43,45 Cl are expanded by the addition of 20 and 8 new $\gamma$ transitions in 43 Cl and 45 Cl respectively, and core-excited negative-parity states were observed in both nuclei for the first time. For 45 S, a large fraction of the β -decay strength was observed feeding neutron-unbound states in 45 Cl, which, decaying by delayed neutrons, populated excited states in the β ⁢1⁢ n daughter, 44 Cl. Experimental observations were compared to detailed shell-model calculations using the SDPFSDG-MU interaction to highlight the role of the diminished N = 28 neutron shell gap and the near degeneracy of the proton s 1/2 and d 3/2 orbitals in the structure of the neutron-rich Cl isotopes. The current work also provides further support to a ground-state spin-parity assignment of 3/2 + in 45 Cl.

Ne 21 energy levels approaching the α -particle threshold

Nuclei around Ne 20 exhibit an interplay of different excitations caused by different aspects of nuclear structure, including single-particle and multiparticle configurations and collective rotations. One-nucleon transfer reactions selectively probe single-particle structures in these nuclei. These nuclei are also important to astrophysics, with a number of important reactions proceeding through this mass region. Energy levels approaching the α -particle threshold in Ne 21 are of importance to nuclear structure. The Ne 20 ( d , p ) Ne 21 reaction was measured and the corresponding spectroscopic nuclear information was extracted. States in Ne 21 were populated using the Ne 20 ( d , p ) Ne 21 reaction in forward kinematics. Protons were identified in the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) Enge split-pole spectrograph and angular distributions were extracted. Spin-party assignments were made and neutron partial widths were determined based on distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis. Several new energy levels were observed at energies of 7176, 7235, 7250, and 7337 keV, and spin-parities are reported which generally agree with previous results where literature was available. Spin and parity assignments are reported for several energy levels along with estimated neutron widths for those states above the neutron threshold ( S n = 6761 keV ). Results from this study are placed in context with a review of the available literature on all known states in this energy region of Ne 21 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Yrast structures of 98 Nb and 99 Mo

Neutron-rich nuclei in the A ≈ 100 mass region are interesting due to a rapid shape transition, especially pronounced in the Zr isotopes, and more recently observed in Nb isotopes. 98 Nb, with only one proton and one neutron outside the subshell closure nucleus of 96 Zr, is amenable to shell model calculations. To further examine the rapid shape transition the yrast structure of 98 Nb was established in this work. This was the only yrast structure missing from all immediate neighbors to 96 Zr. The yrast structure of 98 Nb was studied in the fission of the compound systems formed in three heavy-ion induced reactions, 24 Mg (134.5 MeV) + 173 Yb, 23 Na (129 MeV) + 176 Yb, and 18 O (91 MeV) + 208 Pb. Prompt γ-ray spectroscopy was accomplished using the Gammasphere array. Excitation energies up to 3 MeV were observed for the first time in 98 Nb. The yrast structure above the previously known (5) + isomer was established. In the process of studying 98 Nb the yrast structure of positive-parity states in 99 Mo was extended to 3.7 MeV excitation energy, the previously-known 99 Nb level scheme was enriched, and two new levels were added in the level scheme of 97 Zr. The coupling of the odd proton occupying the g 9/2 orbital to the yrast states in the core nucleus of 97 Zr can account for all observed states in 98 Nb. The yrast structure for the positive-parity states of 99 Mo is compared to the deformed ground-state bands of the 101 Ru isotone and of 98,100 Mo.

Isomers and hindrances in No254: A touchstone for theories of superheavy nuclei

We report on a new spectroscopic study of the decay of high-K isomers in No152102254, a touchstone nucleus for testing models to understand the structure of superheavy nuclei. The experiment, performed using the Argonne gas-filled analyzer (AGFA), was geared toward resolving long-standing ambiguities in spin-parity and configuration assignments for the two- and four-quasiparticle (qp) intrinsic excitations identified in this nucleus. The isomer decay schemes are firmly established with the help of the highest-statistics γ-γ coincidence data collected to date, providing anchor points for competing theories. A newly measured half-life in the nanosecond range establishes a second 2-qp isomer in No254. The preferred decay pathways for the 2- and 4-qp isomers are discussed, providing new insights into the underlying hindrance mechanisms at play in these heavy nuclei. With firm configuration assignments, the intrinsic excitations in this deformed mass region provide stringent constraints and challenge the different theoretical approaches at play in understanding the structure of superheavy nuclei.

Anomalous spin polarization from turbulent color fields

Here we study the important, yet widely overlooked, role of gluons for spin transport with a connection to local parity violation in quark gluon plasmas. We employ the formalism of quantum kinetic theory to quarks in weakly coupled quantum chromodynamics to derive the source terms for quark spin polarization. These source terms involve parity-odd correlators of dynamically generated color fields in near-equilibrium quark gluon plasmas and give rise to locally fluctuating axial charge currents. Our results provide a possible explanation for the spin alignment of vector mesons measured in high-energy nuclear collisions.

Novel transition dynamics of topological solitons

Continuous phase transitions can be classified into ones characterized by local-order parameters and others that need additional topological constraints. The critical dynamics near the former transitions have been extensively studied, but the latter is less understood. We fill this gap in knowledge by studying the transition dynamics to a parity-breaking topological ground state called the chiral soliton lattice in quantum chromodynamics at finite temperature, baryon chemical potential, and an external magnetic field. We find a slowing down of the soliton’s translational motion as the critical magnetic field approaches, while the local relaxation rate to the solitonic state remains finite. The time required to converge to the stationary state strongly depends on the symmetry of the initial configuration, determining whether translational motion occurs during the dynamic process. Spin-orbit correlations in the nucleon in the large- N c limit

We study the twist-3 spin-orbit correlations of quarks described by the nucleon matrix elements of the parity-odd rank-2 tensor QCD operator (the parity-odd partner of the QCD energy-momentum tensor). Our treatment is based on the effective dynamics emerging from the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry and the mean-field picture of the nucleon in the large- N c limit. The twist-3 QCD operators are converted to effective operators, in which the QCD interactions are replaced by spin-flavor-dependent chiral interactions of the quarks with the pion field. We compute the nucleon matrix elements of the twist-3 effective operators and discuss the role of the chiral interactions in the spin-orbit correlations. We derive the first-quantized representation in the mean-field picture and develop a quantum-mechanical interpretation. The chiral interactions give rise to new spin-orbit couplings and qualitatively change the correlations compared to the quark model picture. We also derive the twist-3 matrix elements in the topological soliton picture where the quarks are integrated out (skyrmion). The methods used here can be extended to other QCD operators describing higher-twist nucleon structure and generalized parton distributions. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Gauge-invariant renormalization of four-quark operators

We study the renormalization of four-quark operators in one-loop perturbation theory. We employ a coordinate-space gauge-invariant renormalization scheme (GIRS), which can be advantageous compared to other schemes, especially in nonperturbative lattice investigations. From our perturbative calculations, we extract the conversion factors between GIRS and the modified minimal subtraction scheme ( MS ¯ ) at the next-to-leading order. As a by-product, we also obtain the relevant anomalous dimensions in the GIRS scheme. A formidable issue in the study of the four-quark operators is that operators with different Dirac matrices mix among themselves upon renormalization. We focus on both parity-conserving and parity-violating four-quark operators, which change flavor numbers by two units ( Δ F = 2 ). The extraction of the conversion factors entails the calculation of two-point Green’s functions involving products of two four-quark operators, as well as three-point Green’s functions with one four-quark and two bilinear operators. The significance of our results lies in their potential to refine our understanding of QCD phenomena, offering insights into the precision of Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements and shedding light on the nonperturbative treatment of complex mixing patterns associated with four-quark operators. Constraints on the finite volume two-nucleon spectrum at 𝑚𝜋 ≈806 MeV

The low-energy, finite-volume spectrum of the two-nucleon system at a quark mass corresponding to a pion mass of 𝑚𝜋≈806 MeV is studied with lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD) using variational methods. The interpolating-operator sets used in [Variational study of two-nucleon systems with lattice QCD, Phys. Rev. D 107, 094508 (2023).] are extended by including a complete basis of local hexaquark operators, as well as plane-wave dibaryon operators built from products of both positive- and negative-parity nucleon operators. Results are presented for the isosinglet and isotriplet two-nucleon channels. In both channels, noticeably weaker variational bounds on the lowest few energy eigenvalues are obtained from operator sets which contain only hexaquark operators or operators constructed from the product of two negative-parity nucleons, while other operator sets produce low-energy variational bounds which are consistent within statistical uncertainties. The consequences of these studies for the LQCD understanding of the two-nucleon spectrum are investigated.

Search for the Chiral Magnetic Effect via Charge-Dependent Azimuthal Correlations Relative to Spectator and Participant Planes in Au + Au Collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen with a significance of 1–3 standard deviations in mid-central (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Furthermore, significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

Observation of New Charmonium or Charmoniumlike States in B + → D * ± D ∓ K + Decays

A study of resonant structures in B + → D * + D − K + and B + → D * − D + K + decays is performed, using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energies of s = 7 , 8, and 13 TeV recorded by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 . A simultaneous amplitude fit is performed to the two channels with contributions from resonances decaying to D * − D + and D * + D − states linked by C parity. This procedure allows the C parities of resonances in the D * ± D ∓ mass spectra to be determined. Four charmonium or charmoniumlike states are observed decaying into D * ± D ∓ : η c ( 3945 ) , h c ( 4000 ) , χ c 1 ( 4010 ) , and h c ( 4300 ) , with quantum numbers J P C equal to 0 − + , 1 + − , 1 + + , and 1 + − , respectively. At least three of these states have not been observed previously. In addition, the existence of the T c ¯ s ¯ 0 * ( 2870 ) 0 and T c ¯ s ¯ 1 * ( 2900 ) 0 resonances in the D − K + mass spectrum, already observed in the B + → D + D − K + decay, is confirmed in a different production channel. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Searches for Pair-Produced Multijet Resonances Using Data Scouting in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

Searches for pair-produced multijet signatures using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 128 fb - 1 of proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV are presented. A data scouting technique is employed to record events with low jet scalar transverse momentum sum values. The electroweak production of particles predicted in R -parity violating supersymmetric models is probed for the first time with fully hadronic final states. This is the first search for prompt hadronically decaying mass-degenerate higgsinos, and extends current exclusions on R -parity violating top squarks and gluinos.

Phase Separation, Capillarity, and Odd-Surface Flows in Chiral Active Matter

Active phase separations evade canonical thermodynamic descriptions and have thus challenged our understanding of coexistence and interfacial phenomena. Considerable progress has been made towards a nonequilibrium theoretical description of these traditionally thermodynamic concepts. Spatial parity symmetry is conspicuously assumed in much of this progress, despite the ubiquity of chirality in experimentally realized systems. Here, in this Letter, we derive a theory for the phase coexistence and interfacial fluctuations of a system that microscopically violates spatial parity. We find suppression of the phase separation as chirality is increased as well as the development of steady-state currents tangential to the interface dividing the phases. These odd flows are irrelevant to stationary interfacial properties, with stability, capillary fluctuations, and surface area minimization determined entirely by the capillary surface tension. Using large-scale Brownian dynamics simulations, we find excellent agreement with our theoretical scaling predictions.

Invisible axion search methods

In the late 1970s, the axion was proposed as a solution to the strong CP problem, i.e., the puzzle why the strong interactions conserve parity P and the product CP of charge conjugation and parity in spite of the fact that the standard model of elementary particles as a whole violates those symmetries. The original axion was soon ruled out by laboratory experiments and astrophysical considerations, but a new version was invented that is much more weakly coupled and that evades the laboratory and astrophysical constraints. It was named the “invisible” axion. However, the axion cannot be arbitrarily weakly coupled because it is overproduced in the early Universe by vacuum realignment in the limit of vanishing coupling. The axions produced by vacuum realignment are a form of cold dark matter today. The axion provides a solution then not only to the strong CP problem but also to the dark matter problem. Various methods have been proposed to search for dark matter axions and for axions emitted by the Sun. Their implementation and improvement has led to significant constraints on the notion of an invisible axion. Even purely laboratory methods may place significant constraints on invisible axions or axionlike particles. This review discusses the various methods that have been proposed and provides theoretical derivations of their signals.

Shape evolution in neutron-rich odd-even 105–109 Nb isotopes

Background: Neutron-rich nuclei around 𝑍 ≈ 40 are well known for exhibiting multiple shape transitions. Here, this region shows one of the sharpest shape transitions in the nuclear chart, evolving from a spherical vibrator at 𝑁 = 58 to a strongly deformed prolate shape at 𝑁 = 60. The largest deformations are observed for 38 Sr and 40 Zr . This abrupt shape transition disappears at 𝑍 = 36 and below, where a shape transition from spherical to oblate nuclei is predicted. On the other hand, for 𝑍 ≥ 42 and 𝑁 ≥ 60, the shape is known to evolve from axial to triaxial. While the even-𝑍 nuclei in this region have already been extensively studied, new insights can be gained from the studies of odd-𝑍 isotopes for a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms driving these phenomena. Purpose: The 41 Nb nuclei lie at the boundary between axially deformed Zr and triaxially deformed Mo nuclei. This work investigates the nuclear structure of very neutron-rich Nb nuclei up to 𝑁 = 68. The goal is to understand how the nuclear shape evolves as a function of isospin in this isotopic chain and provide new insights into the emergence of triaxial deformation. Methods: The structure of the neutron-rich Nb isotopes was investigated using state-of-the-art high-resolution 𝛾-ray spectroscopy of fission fragments produced via two different fission reactions. The use of 9 Be ⁢( 238 U, 𝑓) inverse kinematics, with a detection system comprising AGATA, EXOGAM, and VAMOS++, enabled the measurement of prompt and delayed 𝛾 rays from isotopically identified fission fragments, and 𝛾−𝛾−𝛾−𝛾 highfold data were obtained from a spontaneous fission source of 252 Cf using the Gammasphere array. Results: The level scheme of 105 Nb has been significantly extended, with the addition of two negative-parity bands observed for the first time. A new level scheme is proposed for 107 Nb, which is not in agreement with an earlier measurement, and new levels and transitions have been added to the very neutron-rich 109 Nb. The degree of triaxiality of the new bands is discussed on the basis of signature splitting analysis. The recently reported level scheme of 99 Nb has been revised. Conclusions: This systematic study on the Nb isotopic chain, compared to Zr and Mo, indicates that while the ground-state band exhibits a triaxial deformation, attributed to a proton hole coupled to a triaxially deformed Mo core, the negative-parity bands, based on isomeric bandheads, display an axially symmetric deformed structure, similar to that observed in the Zr isotopes, revealing the existence of a shape coexistence in the neutron-rich Nb nuclei.

Quantum-State-Controlled Collisions of Ultracold Polyatomic Molecules

Collisions between ultracold calcium monohydroxide (CaOH) molecules are realized and studied. Inelastic collision rate constants are measured for CaOH prepared in ground and excited vibrational states, and the electric field dependence of these rates is measured for molecules in single quantum states of the parity-doubled bending mode. Theoretical calculations of collision rate coefficients are performed and found to agree with measured values. The lowest collisional loss rates are for states with repulsive long-range potentials that shield ultracold molecules from loss channels at short distance. These results unveil the collisional behavior of parity-doublet molecules in the ultracold regime and lay the foundation for future experiments to evaporatively cool polyatomic molecules to quantum degeneracy.

Spin density matrix elements in exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction

We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive $\rho ^0$ meson muoproduction at COMPASS using 160 GeV/c polarised μ + and μ – beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the kinematic range 5.0 GeV/c 2 < W < 17.0 GeV/c 2 , 1.0 (GeV/c) 2 < $\mathrm{Q}$ 2 < 10.0 (GeV/c) 2 and 0.01 (GeV/c) 2 < $p_{\textrm{T}}^2$ < 0.5 (GeV/c) 2 . Here, W denotes the mass of the final hadronic system, $\mathrm{Q}$ 2 the virtuality of the exchanged photon, and $p_{\textrm{T}}$ the transverse momentum of the $\rho ^0$ meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ($\gamma ^*_T \rightarrow V^{ }_L$) indicate a violation of s-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a dominant contribution of natural-parity-exchange transitions and a very small contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange transitions, which is compatible with zero within experimental uncertainties. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow one to evaluate in a model-dependent way the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive $\rho ^0$ production.

LiAISON (Life-cycle Assessment Integration into Scalable Open-source Numerical models) [SWR-24-01]

We introduce an open source prospective LCA framework, the Life-cycle Assessment Integration into Scalable Open-source Numerical models (LiAISON), to analyze the non-linear relationships between technology foreground and the future energy system background across a series of midpoint and resource use metrics The integration of LCA and IAM data is achieved using prospective environmental Impact assessment (PREMISE)7. We showcase it by assessing two Power-to-Hydrogen (PtH2) processes, namely Solid Oxide Electrolysis (SOE) and Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Electrolysis (PEME). We compare the technologies to a baseline of hydrogen production via natural gas-based Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) in a US context of multiple energy system and climate change mitigation futures. Besides providing an analysis that specifies the LCA results ranges with temporal and geospatial explicitness across the two technologies, metrics, and impact assessment methods, this research also aims to establish a base framework that can be expanded to use other IAM generated scenarios and US open-source life cycle inventory (LCI) databases. We find that the temporal environmental performance of either technology or their difference to SMR is directly influenced by the underlying background dynamics. Under baseline projections (i.e., no decarbonization goals), neither process reaches parity with the incumbent technology across several environmental metrics. Under the decarbonization scenarios, the underlying sectoral shifts result in declining impacts over time, compared to 2020 levels, except for metal depletion levels, which increase. The background shifts postulate a heavily decarbonized economy and energy system, which help technologies reach parity with SMR between 2040-2050 (RCP2.6) and 2030-2040 (RCP1.9) for global warming. Despite declines across several other metrics over time, neither PtH2 technology break even with SMR by 2100 besides for global warming.
