Exploiting symmetries for efficient post-buckling analysis of composite plates

Two aspects of the post-buckling analysis of composite plates are considered in this paper. The first pertains to identifying the different types of symmetry exhibited by the pre- and post-buckling responses of rectangular and skewed composite plates. A procedure is presented for exploiting these symmetries in finite-element and finite-difference analyses. The procedure can be used with existing programs having multipoint constraint capability. The second aspect pertains to the post-buckling response of biaxially loaded composite plates. Numerical results from finite-element analysis are presented which show the range of parameters for which shear deformation and/or anisotropy are important in buckling and post-buckling analysis.

Postbuckling of long orthotropic plates loaded in combined transverse compression and longitudinal compression or shear

The postbuckling behavior of simply supported, rectangular, isotropic and orthotropic composite plates under combined loading is determined analytically. Results are presented for a long plate loaded beyond its buckling load in either a combination of longitudinal and transverse compression or a combination of transverse compression and inplane shear. Results show that orthotropic plates may behave differently than isotropic plates for these loading conditions. Results also show that the postbuckling behavior of plates in shear with constrained edge displacements is markedly different than their behavior with stress free edges.

Elastic and plastic buckling of simply supported solid-core sandwich plates in compression

A solution is presented for the problem of the compressive buckling of simply supported, flat, rectangular, solid-core sandwich plates stressed either in the elastic range or in the plastic range. Charts for the analysis of long sandwich plates are presented for plates having face materials of 24s-t3 aluminum alloy, 76s-t6 alclad aluminum alloy, and stainless steel. A comparison of computed and experimental buckling stresses of square solid-core sandwich plates indicates fair agreement between theory and experiment.

Finite element analysis of nonlinear flutter of composite panels

A finite element formulation is developed to analyze large-amplitude panel flutter of arbitrary laminated plates. The plates considered are anisotropic composite, thin rectangular panels. The equations of motion for an oscillating plate are determined and solved by linearizing the nonlinear stiffness matrices. The solution procedure is presented to determine the limit-cycle motions which are caused by the large deflections and vibrations induced by the areodynamic load. The aerodynamic load is defined by the first-order piston theory. Examples studied include cross-ply laminates with various numbers of layers and three-layer angle-ply laminates with different lamination angles. The effects of simply supported and clamped boundary conditions of a cross-ply laminate are also examined.

Application of the TRPLT1 element to large amplitude free vibrations of plates

A finite element formulation is developed for analyzing large amplitude free flexural vibrations of thin plates in NASTRAN. Stress distributions in the plate, in addition to deflection shapes and nonlinear frequencies are determined. Linearized equations of motion governing large amplitude oscillations of plates and a linearized geometrical stiffness matrix are presented. The solution procedure and convergence characteristics are discussed. The quasi-linear geometrical stiffness matrix for an eighteen degree-of-freedom higher order triangular plate element is evaluated by using a seven-point numerical integration. Nonlinear frequencies for square, rectangular, rhombic, and isosceles triangular plates, with edges simply supported or clamped, are compared with earlier solutions. The present formulation is found to give results entirely adequate for engineering purposes.

The initiation, development, and decay of the secondary flow in a bounded jet

The secondary flow in a low aspect ratio incompressible turbulent bounded jet is described in terms of a near, middle, and far field in which the secondary motion is initiated, developed, and decayed, respectively. The initiation of the secondary flow is explained by the distortion of the planar vortex loops which bound the jet at the exit plane. In the region away from the bounding plates, the vortex loop distortion is similar to that found in rectangular free jets; however, the bounding plates cause an additional production of streamwise vorticity near the plates which has no counterpart in the free jet flow. Downstream of the jet core region, a large-scale secondary flow developes from this vorticity. Farther downstream the secondary flow decays; the resultant flow may be characterized as a combination of a plane jet and boundary layer flows. This explanation is supported by the vorticity and velocity data of this investigation.

Experimental Configuration and Preliminary Results of Testing a Rapid Cycle Adsorption Pump for Martian CO2 Acquisition

Temperature-swing adsorption pumps have been proposed as a method of acquiring and compressing Martian atmospheric CO2 for downstream processing. Most industrial applications and previous research targeted at space in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) utilize long (~hours) temperature swing periods, typically limited by the ability to transfer heat from a naturally insulating sorbent bed. A rapid cycle adsorption pump (RCAP) would reduce these periods to minutes, in the hope of increasing overall throughput. This paper details the design and preliminary experimental results from testing an RCAP in a simulated Martian environment. The test configuration features a central, liquid-cooled and heated heat transfer plate surrounded by symmetrical rectangular sorbent beds. Various bed thicknesses and commercially available Zeolite 13X sorbent particle sizes are evaluated to both determine performance and provide data for a parallel modeling effort. Discussions of multi-stage configurations and methods of boosting bed conductivity are included.

Analysis of symmetric cross-ply laminated elastic plates using a higher-order theory. II - Buckling and free vibration

A previously developed higher-order plate theory and a technique based on the state space concept are used to investigate free vibration and buckling problems of rectangular cross-ply laminated plates. Unified results are presented for the case of arbitrary boundary conditions on two opposite edges. Good agreement is obtained with previous data for simply supported edge conditions. It is pointed out that classical laminated plate theory tends to overpredict both eigenfrequencies and buckling loads, leading to an increase of the degree of orthotropicity of individual layers and of the thickness ratio of the plate.

Three-dimensional solutions for the free vibrations and buckling of thermally stressed multilayered angle-ply composite plates

Analytic three-dimensional elasticity solutions are developed for the free vibration and buckling of thermally stressed rectangular multilayered angle-ply anisotropic plates which are assumed to have an antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. Sensitivity derivatives are evaluated and used to investigate the sensitivity of the vibration and buckling responses to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the plate. A Duhamel-Neumann-type constitutive model is used, and the material properties are assumed to be independent of temperature. Numerical results are presented, showing the effects of variations in the material characteristics and fiber orientation of different layers, as well as the effect of initial thermal deformation on the vibrational and buckling responses of the plate.

Supersonic axial-force characteristics of a rectangular-box cavity with various length-to-depth ratios in a flat plate

A wind-tunnel investigation has been conducted at Mach numbers of 1.50, 2.16, and 2.86 to obtain axial-force data on a metric rectangular-box cavity with various length-to-depth ratios. The model was tested at angles of attack from -4 deg to -2 deg. The results are summarized to show variations in cavity axial-force coefficient for deep- and shallow-cavity configurations with detached and attached cavity flow fields, respectively. The results of the investigation indicate that for a wide range of cavity lengths and depths, good correlations of the cavity axial-force coefficients (based on cavity rear-face area) are obtained when these coefficients are plotted as a function of cavity length-to-depth ratio. Abrupt increases in the cavity axial-force coefficients at an angle of attack of 0 deg. reflect the transition from an open (detached) cavity flow field to a closed (attached) cavity flow field. Cavity length-to-depth ratio is the dominant factor affecting the switching of the cavity flow field from one type to the other. The type of cavity flow field (open or closed) is not dependent on the test angles of attack except near the critical value of length-to-depth ratio.

Numerical results for extended field method applications

This paper presents the numerical results obtained when a new method of analysis, called the extended field method, was applied to several thin plate problems including one with non-rectangular geometry, and one problem involving both beams and a plate. The numerical results show that the quality of the single plate solutions was satisfactory for all cases except those involving a freely deflecting plate corner. The results for the beam and plate structure were satisfactory even though the structure had a freely deflecting corner.

Three-dimensional solutions for antisymmetrically laminated anisotropic plates

Analytic three-dimensional elasticity solutions are presented for the stress and free vibration problems of multilayered anisotropic plates. The plates are assumed to have rectangular geometry and antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. A mixed formulation is used with the fundamental unknowns consisting of the six stress components and the three displacement components of the plate. Each of the plate variables is decomposed into symmetric and antisymmetric components in the thickness direction, and is expressed in terms of a double Fourier series in the Cartesian surface coordinates. Extensive numerical results are presented showing the effects of variation in the lamination and geometric parameters of composite plates on the importance of the transverse stress and strain components.

Three-dimensional solutions for the thermal buckling and sensitivity derivatives of temperature-sensitive multilayered angle-ply plates

Analytic three-dimensional thermoelasticity solutions are presented for the thermal buckling of multilayered angle-ply composite plates with temperature-dependent thermoelastic properties. Both the critical temperatures and the sensitivity derivatives are computed. The sensitivity derivatives measure the sensitivity of the buckling response to variations in the different lamination and material parameters of the plate. The plates are assumed to have rectangular geometry and an antisymmetric lamination with respect to the middle plane. The temperature is assumed to be independent of the surface coordinates, but has an arbitrary symmetric variation through the thickness of the plate. The prebuckling deformations are accounted for. Numerical results are presented, for plates subjected to uniform temperature increase, showing the effects of temperature-dependent material properties on the prebuckling stresses, critical temperatures, and their sensitivity derivatives.

Experimental Investigation of the Problem of Surface Roughness

Based on the universal laws of turbulent velocity distribution at rough and smooth walls, there is in the present work presented a method that allows surface roughness tests and in particular, measurements on the roughness of ship surfaces to be carried out in a much simpler manner. The types of roughness investigated were in the form of flat, rough plates installed in a square-section rectangular channel, the other three walls always being smooth. Twenty-one plates of various roughness were investigated, the roughness elements being the following: spheres of diameter 0.41 and 0.21, respectively, spherical segments, cones, and "short" and "long" angles.
