Advanced Intelligent Sensor Development and Demonstration for Future Distribution Systems with High Penetration DERs

The nation’s electric grid is evolving to supply the electricity needed for economic growth, health, and quality of life. As the DOE has pointed out “Old Tools Won’t Solve New Problems” This project conceived, designed, built, and demonstrated a new tool that promises to make the emerging grid dependable at a lower cost. The tool is a smart sensor with the sensitivity and the bandwidth to measure actionable information about grid health that was unmeasurable.

Power System Modeling for the Study of High Penetration of Distributed Photovoltaic Energy

Many conventional power systems are evolving due to the growth of renewable energy and distributed energy resources (DERs). Modeling the interplay of transmission and distribution systems is critical to analyze how DERs impact a system’s conventional operation and which electric infrastructure improvements are needed to achieve a balance between centralized generation and DERs. This article describes the process, tools, and resources used to model electric power systems with a centralized infrastructure in an isolated context and limited access to actual utility data. Photovoltaic systems installed on residential rooftops were the main design option. This work broadened the typical power system modeling to include planning and social considerations. This integrative engineering-social method allows for interdisciplinary teams to work in the development of a model as part of broader design goals for a renewable-dominant energy system. The Puerto Rico electric power system was used as a case study to demonstrate the process. The integrative engineering-social perspective in developing the model and the actions to manage data limitations are aspects that could be followed in other locations with aggressive renewable energy goals and where utility data are not readily available.

Stability Analysis of Power Systems with High Penetration of State-of-the-Art Inverter Technologies

With the increasing level of inverter-based resources (IBRs) in modern power systems, this paper presents a small-signal stability analysis for power systems comprising synchronous generators (SGs) and IBRs. Four types of inverter controls are considered: two grid-following (GFL) controls, with or without grid support functions; droop-based grid-forming (GFM) controls; and virtual oscillator control-based GFM. We also analyze the impact of STATCOM and synchronous condensers on system stability to assess their role in the energy mix transition. With the small-signal dynamic behavior of the major technologies modeled, this paper provides stringent stability assessments using the IEEE 39-bus benchmark system modified to simulate future power systems. The exhaustive test cases allow for (a) assessing the impacts of different types and controls of generation and supplementary grid assets, as well as system inertia and line impedance on grid stability, and (b) elucidating pathways for the stabilization of IBR-dominated power systems. The analysis also indicates that future power systems can be stabilized with only a fraction of the total generation as voltage sources without SGs or significant system inertia if they are well distributed. This study provides insights into future power system operations with a high level of IBRs that can also be used for planning and operation studies.

Protection of Radial Circuits with High Penetration Distributed Photovoltaics

The paper addresses the shortcomings of distribution protection systems as distribution level photovoltaic installations as well as other inverter based distributed resources are added to the system. Several protection schemes have been evaluated, including distance-based, estimation-based and learning-based. The paper summarizes the results and provides recommendations.

Developing a Drilling Optimization System for Improved Overall Rate of Penetration in Geothermal Wells

Geothermal energy is renewable, reliable and environmentally friendly source of energy. The major cost in the development of geothermal wells is the actual drilling of the wells. The main objective of this paper is to introduce a new real-time drilling optimization system designed for granite formation to reduce the overall drilling cost. In this study, a drilling optimization system is verified using drilling data from Utah-Forge well 58-32. The drilling optimization system used the Utah-Forge well 58-32 data to achieve real-time unconfined compressive strength (UCS). Based on the UCS value from the previous feet, the system simulates the ROP for the next drilling feet. The drilling optimization system utilizes the Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA), which is a metaheuristic method to search the space of solution, to find the best operating parameters (i.e. WOB and RPM) for the next drilling foot. The optimization algorithm takes a maximum cutter temperature into account as a constraint and avoids the accelerated wear. The developed drilling optimization system improves ROP responses and reduces the drilling cost of geothermal wells. The simulated ROP results from the system show a good agreement with the ROP from Utah-Forge well 58-32 drilling data. The drilling time before and after optimization for both intervals were presented.

Modeling Distributed Energy Resources for Analyzing Distribution Systems with High Renewable Penetration: Preprint

Increasing levels of inverter-based distributed energy resources (IBDERs) impact the legacy overcurrent distribution protection systems. The fault current injections of IBDERs are limited to between 1-2 p.u. of the rated current. The combination of the limited fault current and varying system load makes it increasingly difficult to reliably set the overcurrent protection. To address this challenge, researchers are proposing adaptive overcurrent protection mechanisms that can adapt to changing system conditions. Accurate modeling of IBDERs is required to develop reliable protection schemes. This paper presents a photovoltaics-based IBDER model in OpenDSS for adaptive overcurrent protection. The paper presents the validation of the proposed IBDER model against a detailed model in electromagnetic transient programs. Protection analysis of the Electric Power Research Institute J1 feeder with the proposed IBDER model is also presented.
