Longitudinal double helicity asymmetry $A_{LL}$ from direct photon, jet and charged pion production in polarized $\vec{p}+\vec{p}$ collisions

Understanding the proton spin composition from the quarks and gluons spin polarization and their motion is important to test various kinds of sum rules and nonperturbative properties of hadrons. At the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), we collide longitudinally polarized proton beams and measure the double helicity asymmetry A_{LL} A L L , which is an important physical quantity for extracting the polarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. Direct photon, jet and charged pion production are good channels to probe the gluon spin polarization inside the proton, with the ability to probe also the sign of the gluon spin. Direct photon production is the theoretically ``cleanest’’ channel, with little fragmentation contribution, but limited by statistics. On the other hand, jet and charged pion production have more statistics, but include more hard processes and hadronization effects. I will present the recent measurements of direct photon, jet and charged pion A_{LL} A L L s at PHENIX and show their complementary roles in extracting the gluon spin.

Oxidation of p-[125I]Iodobenzoic Acid and p-[211At]Astatobenzoic Acid Derivatives and Evaluation In Vivo

The alpha particle-emitting radionuclide astatine-211 (211At) is of interest for targeted radiotherapy; however, low in vivo stability of many 211At-labeled cancer-targeting molecules has limited its potential. As an alternative labeling method, we evaluated whether a specific type of astatinated aryl compound that has the At atom in a higher oxidation state might be stable to in vivo deastatination. In the research effort, para-iodobenzoic acid methyl ester and dPEG4-amino acid methyl ester derivatives were prepared as HPLC standards. The corresponding para-stannylbenzoic acid derivatives were also prepared and labeled with 125I and 211At. Oxidization of the [125I]iodo- and [211At]astato-benzamidyl-dPEG4-acid methyl ester derivatives provided materials for in vivo evaluation. A biodistribution was conducted in mice with coinjected oxidized 125I- and 211At-labeled compounds. The oxidized radioiodinated derivative was stable to in vivo deiodination, but unfortunately the oxidized [211At]astatinated benzamide derivative was found to be unstable under the conditions of isolation by radio-HPLC (post animal injection). Another biodistribution study in mice evaluated the tissue concentrations of coinjected [211At]NaAtO3 and [125I]NaIO3. Comparison of the tissue concentrations of the isolated material from the oxidized [211At]benzamide derivative with those of [211At]astatate indicated the species obtained after isolation was likely [211At]astatate.

Low soil phosphorus availability triggers maize growth stage specific rhizosphere processes leading to mineralization of organic P

Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential nutrients for all living organisms. High-quality mineral P fertilizer is a finite resource with only an estimated 80-100 years of reserves remaining globally. Both plants and microbes have developed several mechanisms such as secretion of organic acids, acidification of the rhizosphere, and production of extracellular enzymes to enhance the acquisition of P from soils. Increased activity of phosphatase occurs in response to P deficiency as part of P starvation responses which catalyze the hydrolysis of P o from soil organic matter (SOM) and release inorganic P (P i ). However, the specific interactions between plants and microbial communities in the rhizosphere soil triggered by P deficiency are largely unknown. In a greenhouse study we grew maize plants in low and high P containing soils and examined the role of rhizosphere processes on mineralization of organic P (P o ) in soils with low and high P availability and different P speciation 23 (Po dominated versus P i dominated) and determine its effect on plant growth. Plant biomass was determined and rhizosphere soils, and soil samples from pots with and without plants were collected at key vegetative growth stages (VGS). A variety of biogeochemical parameters (e.g. microbial biomass C and P, potential phosphatase activities, plant biomass P, soil P species etc.) were determined using both conventional (sequential chemical extraction) and advanced (e.g. high resolution mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) and 3129 P solution NMR) techniques. Here, we used phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) and DNA based microbial community analysis to track changes in microbial community structure and diversity. Low P availability induced changes in biogeochemical processes and microbial community composition in the rhizosphere soils of plants grown in low P containing soil. At early VGS, the plants in low P soil were visually struggling which correlated with greater rhizosphere potential acid phosphatase activity and a reduction in P o fractions. At late VGS, the plants appeared to recover which correlated with a decrease in Meh (III) extractable P, an increase in microbial biomass C and P and greater total P in the plant biomass (roots, shoots and leaves). In high P containing soil, on the other hand, greater P availability masked these rhizosphere processes. Our results confirmed the degradation of SOM and Po mineralization in rhizosphere soils driven by microbe and plant need for P. P deficiency may have favored the abundance of fungi which utilized easily degradable root exudates for the production of extracellular enzymes responsible for the mineralize of SOM P o . This study highlights the intertwined mechanisms involved, and emphasizes the importance of, P o sources for plant nutrition and survival in marginal soils.

Measurement of cold nuclear matter effects for inclusive J / ψ in p +Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV

Measurement by the STAR experiment at RHIC of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects experienced by inclusive J / ψ at mid-rapidity in 0-100% p +Au collisions at s NN = 200 GeV is presented. Such effects are quantified utilizing the nuclear modification factor, R p Au , obtained by taking a ratio of J / ψ yield in p +Au collisions to that in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The differential J / ψ yield in both p + p and p +Au collisions is measured through the dimuon decay channel, taking advantage of the trigger capability provided by the Muon Telescope Detector in the RHIC 2015 run. Consequently, the J / ψ R p Au is derived within the transverse momentum ( p T ) range of 0 to 10 GeV/ c . A suppression of approximately 30% is observed for p T < 2 GeV/ c , while J / ψ R p Au becomes compatible with unity for p T greater than 3 GeV/ c , indicating the J / ψ yield is minimally affected by the CNM effects at high p T . Comparison to a similar measurement from 0-20% central Au+Au collisions reveals that the observed strong J / ψ suppression above 3 GeV/ c is mostly due to the hot medium effects, providing strong evidence for the formation of the quark-gluon plasma in these collisions. Several model calculations show qualitative agreement with the measured J / ψ R p Au , while their agreement with the J / ψ yields in p + p and p +Au collisions is worse.

Determining fast-S and slow-S propagation directions with SV-P data produced by buried explosives and recorded with vertical geophones

We have evaluated the concept of practicing S-wave reflection seismology with legacy 3D seismic data generated by a P-wave source and recorded with only vertical geophones. This type of S-wave imaging is based on the principle that seismic P-wave sources not only produce a downgoing illuminating P wavefield, but they also simultaneously produce a downgoing illuminating SV wavefield that, in almost all cases, is suitable for S-wave reflection imaging. The S-mode used in this study is the SV-P, or converted-P, mode. This mode involves a downgoing illuminating SV wavefield and an upgoing reflected P-mode that is recorded by vertical geophones. In flat-layered stratigraphy, the lengths of the SV and P raypaths in SV-P imaging are identical to the lengths of the SV and P raypaths in P-SV imaging with P-sources and 3C geophones. P-SV imaging of deep rocks has been practiced for more than two decades; SV-P imaging is a new concept. SV-P data should provide the same options for investigating deep rocks as do P-SV data. We have determined one of the equivalences between SV-P data extracted from vertical-geophone data and P-SV data extracted from horizontal geophones: that both modes react to azimuth-dependent variations in the S velocity in anisotropic rocks. Azimuthal variations in the SV-P traveltime can be used to define the polarization direction of the fast-S-wave mode, which is also the azimuth of the maximum horizontal stress (SHmax). Our investigation demonstrates a noninvasive method for monitoring changes in the SHmax azimuth across a CO 2 storage reservoir, or any targeted porous rock, as fluids are cycled into, and then out of, that rock’s pore space.

Strange hadron production in $pp$ and $p$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The transverse momentum ( p T ) distributions of Λ , Ξ - , and Ω - baryons, their antiparticles, and K S 0 mesons are measured in proton-proton ( p p ) and proton-lead ( p Pb ) collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV over a broad rapidity range. The data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 40.2 nb - 1 and 15.6 μ b - 1 for p p and p Pb collisions, respectively, were collected by the CMS experiment. The nuclear modification factor R p Pb , which is defined as the ratio of the particle yield in p Pb collisions and a scaled p p reference, is measured for each particle. A strong dependence on particle species is observed in the p T range from 2 to 7 GeV, where R p Pb for K S 0 is consistent with unity, while an enhancement ordered by strangeness content and/or particle mass is observed for the three baryons. In p Pb collisions, the strange hadron production is asymmetric about the nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass rapidity. Enhancements, which depend on the particle type, are observed in the direction of the Pb beam. The results are compared with predictions from epos lhc , which includes parametrized radial flow. The model is in qualitative agreement with the R p Pb data, but fails to describe the dependence on particle species in the yield asymmetries measured away from midrapidity in p Pb collisions.

Revisiting two thiophosphate compounds constituting d 0 transition metal HfP 2 S 6 and d 10 transition metal α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 as multifunctional materials for combining second harmonic generation response and photocurrent response

Two acentric thiophosphate compounds, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 , are revisited and studied as infrared nonlinear optical materials. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were structurally characterized without any property measurements. Here, in this work, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were synthesized via high temperature salt flux reactions. Low-temperature polymorph acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 was purified and grown as mm-sized crystals with the aid of AgBr flux. The AgBr flux was revealed to play an important role in stabilizing the acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 . The acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 transforms to centrosymmetric β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 at 850(5) K, which is revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and powder X-ray diffraction experiments. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 are discovered by UV-vis spectrum measurements as indirect bandgap semiconductors with bandgaps of 2.2(1) eV and 2.5(1) eV, respectively, which is supported by DFT calculations and TB-LMTO-ASA calculations. The bonding pictures of α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were studied by crystal orbital Hamilton population calculations (COHP) coupled with electron localization function (ELF) analysis. DFT calculations predict that HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 would exhibit different optical performances regardless of being constructed from identical [P 2 S 6 ] motifs. HfP 2 S 6 exhibits a low second harmonic generation (SHG) response, ~0.21 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 25 μm). α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 possesses moderate SHG response, ~0.61 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 225 μm) coupled with a high laser damage threshold (LDT) of ~3.2 × AGS. Characteristics of high ambient stability, moderate bandgap and SHG response, type-I phase-matching capability, and high LDT together with the easy growth of large crystals make α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 attractive for future infrared nonlinear optical applications. Photocurrent measurements found that α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 and β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 have high photocurrent response, 165 nA cm -2 and 135 nA cm -2 , respectively. α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 is a new multifunctional material of the ternary Ag–P–S system, which combines nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and photocurrent response.

High-pressure response of vibrational properties of b-As x P 1– x : in situ Raman studies

The structural evolution of black arsenic-phosphorous (b-As x P 1–x ) alloys with varying arsenic concentrations was investigated under hydrostatic pressure using in situ Raman spectroscopy. High-pressure experiments were conducted using a diamond anvil cell, which revealed pressure-induced shifts in vibrational modes associated with P–P bonds (A 1 g , A 2 g , ${B}_{2g}$), As–As bonds (A 1 g , A 2 g , ${{B}}_{2g}$), and As–P bonds in b-As x P 1–x alloys. Two distinct pressure regimes were observed. In the first regime (region I), all vibrational modes exhibited a monotonic upshift, indicating phonon hardening due to hydrostatic pressure. In the second regime (region II), As 0.4 P 0.6 and As 0.6 P 0.4 alloys displayed a linear blueshift (or negligible change in some modes) at a reduced rate, suggesting local structural reorganization with less compression on the bonds. Notably, the alloy with the highest As concentration, As 0.8 P 0.2 , exhibited anomalous behavior in the second pressure regime, with a downward shift observed in all As–As and As–P Raman modes (and some P–P modes). Interestingly, the emergence of new peaks corresponding to the E g mode and A 1g mode of the gray-As phase was observed in this pressure range, indicating compressive strain-induced structural changes. The anomalous change in region II confirms the formation of a new local structure, characterized by elongation of the P–P, As–As, and As–P bonds along the zigzag direction within the b-As x P 1–x phase, possibly near the grain boundary. Additionally, a gray-As phase undergoes compressive structural changes. This study underscores the significance of pressure in inducing structural transformations and exploring novel phases in two-dimensional materials, including b-As x P 1–x alloys.

Phyllosticta paracitricarpa is synonymous with the EU quarantine fungus P. citricarpa based on phylogenomic analyses

Phyllosticta citricarpa is an important citrus-pathogen and a quarantine organism in the European Union. Its recently described relative, P. paracitricarpa, is very closely related and not listed as a quarantine organism. P. paracitricarpa is very difficult to distinguish from P. citricarpa, since its morphological features overlap and the barcoding gene sequences that were originally used to delimit them as distinct species have a low number of species-specific polymorphisms that have subsequently been shown to overlap between the two clades. Therefore, we performed extensive genomic analyses to determine whether the genetic variation between P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa strains should be considered to represent infraspecific variation within P. citricarpa, or whether it is indicative of distinct species. Using a phylogenomic analysis with 3,000 single copy ortholog genes and whole-genome comparisons, we determined that the variation between P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa can be considered as infraspecies variation within P. citricarpa. We also determined the level of variation in mitochondrial assemblies of several Phyllosticta species and concluded there are only minimal differences between the assemblies of P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa. Thus, using several orthogonal approaches, we here demonstrate that variation within the nuclear and mitochondrial genomes of other Phyllosticta species is larger than variation between genomes obtained from P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa strains. Thus, P. citricarpa and P. paracitricarpa should be considered as conspecific.

Enhancing Properties with Distortion: A Comparative Study of Two Iron Phosphide Fe 2 P Polymorphs

Iron phosphide (Fe 2 P) crystallizes in its own hexagonal crystal structure type (h-Fe 2 P). As found in meteorites, orthorhombic polymorph (o-Fe 2 P) was originally reported as a high-temperature and high-pressure phase. Recently, o-Fe 2 P was described as being stable at ambient pressure, yet no synthetic methods were developed for single-crystal growth or single-phase bulk powder synthesis. Here, we report a successful method for growing o-Fe 2 P single crystals and synthesizing phase-pure polycrystalline samples using tin-flux. In situ powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that the phase transition from o-Fe 2 P to h-Fe 2 P occurs at about 873 K, and below that temperature, the formation of the o-Fe 2 P phase is favored thermodynamically rather than kinetically. Systematic comparison of transport, magnetic, and electrocatalytic properties of both h-Fe 2 P and o-Fe 2 P phases showed a substantial impact of the crystal structure on properties. The orthorhombic structural distortion resulted in considerable changes in magnetic properties, with the o-Fe 2 P phase exhibiting a 60% lower Fe magnetic moment and a substantially higher ferromagnetic Curie temperature than h-Fe 2 P. Further, electrochemical measurements toward the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media showed that the o-Fe 2 P phase requires an 80 mV lower overpotential than the h-Fe 2 P phase to generate a current density of -10 mA/cm 2 , and their electronic structures suggest that the higher density of states at the Fermi energy is the origin of superior catalytic activity in o-Fe 2 P.
