Gate-tunable heavy fermion quantum criticality in a moiré Kondo lattice

We propose a realization of Kondo lattice physics in moiré superlattices at the interface between a WX 2 homobilayer and MoX 2 monolayer (X = S,Se). Under appropriate gating conditions, the interface WX 2 layer forms a triangular lattice of local moments that couple to itinerant electrons in the other WX 2 layer via a gate-tunable Kondo exchange interaction. Using a parton mean-field approach, we identify a range of twist angles which support a gate-tuned quantum phase transition between a heavy Fermi liquid with large anomalous Hall conductance and a chiral spin liquid coexisting with a light Fermi liquid and describe experimental signatures to distinguish among competing theoretical scenarios.

Itinerant ferromagnetism in transition metal dichalcogenide moiré superlattices

Moiré materials are artificial crystals formed at van der Waals heterojunctions that have emerged as a highly tunable platform that is able to realize much of the rich quantum physics of electrons in atomic scale solids, and in several cases even new quantum phases of matter. Here we use finite-size exact diagonalization methods to explore the physics of single-band itinerant electron ferromagnetism in semiconductor moiré materials. As a result, we predict where ferromagnetism is likely to occur in triangular-lattice moiré systems, and where it is likely to yield the highest Curie temperatures.

Properties of first-order hadron-quark phase transition from inverting neutron star observables

By inverting the observational data of several neutron star observables in the three-dimensional parameter space of the constant speed of sound (CSS) model while fixing all hadronic equation-of-state parameters at their currently known most probable values, we constrain the three parameters of the CSS model and their correlations. Using two lower radius limits of $R$ $2.01$ = $11.41$ km and $R$ $2.01$ = $12.2$ km for PSR J0740+6620 obtained from two independent analyses using different approaches by the Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) Collaboration, the speed of sound squared $c$ $^2_{QM}$ in quark matter is found to have a lower limit of 0.35 or 0.43 in units of $c$ $2$ , above its conformal limit of $c$ $^2_{QM}$ < $1/3$. Furthermore, an approximately linear correlation between the first-order hadron-quark transition density $ρ$ $t$ and its strength $Δε$ is found. Moreover, the presence of twin stars is deemed improbable by the present work.

Impact of the newly revised gravitational redshift of x-ray burster GS 1826-24 on the equation of state of supradense neutron-rich matter

Thanks to the recent advancement in producing rare isotopes and measuring their masses with unprecedented precision, the updated nuclear masses around the waiting-point nucleus 64 Ge in the rapid-proton capture process have led to a significant revision of the surface gravitational redshift of the neutron star (NS) in GS 1826-24 by refitting its x-ray burst light curve using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA). The resulting NS compactness ξ is between 0.183 and 0.259 at 95% confidence level, and its upper boundary is significantly smaller than the maximum ξ previously known. Incorporating these new data within a comprehensive Bayesian statistical framework, we investigate its impact on the Equation of State (EOS) of supradense neutron-rich matter and the required spin frequency for GW190814’s minor m 2 with mass 2.59 ± 0.05⁢M ⊙ to be a rotationally stable pulsar. We found that the EOS of high-density symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) has to be softened significantly while the symmetry energy at supersaturation densities stiffened compared to our prior knowledge from earlier analyses using data from both astrophysical observations and terrestrial nuclear experiments. In particular, the skewness J 0 characterizing the stiffness of high-density symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) decreases significantly, while the slope L, curvature K sym , and skewness Jsym of nuclear symmetry energy all increase appreciably compared to their fiducial values. Here, we also found that the most probable spin rate for the m 2 to be a stable pulsar is very close to its mass-shedding limit once the revised redshift data from GS 1826-24 is considered, making the m 2 unlikely the most massive NS observed so far.

Bayesian inference of fine features of the nuclear equation of state from future neutron star radius measurements to 0.1 km accuracy

To more precisely constrain the equation of state (EOS) of supradense neutron-rich nuclear matter, future high-precision x-ray and gravitational wave observatories are proposed to measure the radii of neutron stars (NSs) with an accuracy better than about 0.1 km. However, it remains unclear what particular aspects (other than the stiffness generally spoken of in the literature) of the EOS and to what precision they will be better constrained. In this work, within a Bayesian framework using a metamodel EOS for NSs, we infer the posterior probability distribution functions (PDFs) of incompressibility K 0 and skewness J 0 of symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) as well as the slope L, curvature K sym , and skewness J sym characterizing the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy E sym ⁡(ρ), respectively, from mean values of NS radii consistent with existing observations and an expected accuracy Δ⁢R ranging from about 1.0 to 0.1 km. Here, we found that (1) the Δ⁢R has little effect on inferring the stiffness of SNM at suprasaturation densities, (2) smaller Δ⁢R reveals more accurately not only the PDFs but also pairwise correlations among parameters characterizing high-density E sym ⁡(ρ), (3) a double-peak feature of the PDF(K sym ) corresponding to the strong K sym – J sym and K sym – L anticorrelations is revealed when Δ⁢R is less than about 0.2 km, and the locations of the two peaks are sensitive to the maximum value of J sym reflecting the stiffness of E sym ⁡(ρ) above about 3 times the saturation density ρ 0 of SNM, and (4) the high-precision radius measurement for canonical NSs is more useful than that for massive ones for constraining the EOS of nucleonic matter around (2–3)⁢ρ 0 .

Nonlocal Interactions in Moiré Hubbard Systems

Moiré materials formed in two-dimensional semiconductor heterobilayers are quantum simulators of Hubbard-like physics with unprecedented electron density and interaction strength tunability. Compared to atomic scale Hubbard-like systems, electrons or holes in moiré materials are less strongly attracted to their effective lattice sites because these are defined by finite-depth potential extrema. As a consequence, nonlocal interaction terms like interaction-assisted hopping and intersite exchange are more relevant. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility of tuning the strength of these coupling constants to favor unusual states of matter, including spin liquids, insulating ferromagnets, and superconductors.

Analysis of First-Order Gratings in Silicon Photonic Waveguides

A simple thin film effective index analysis for first order gratings in Si photonic waveguides is shown to provide highly accurate results for reflected and transmitted power spectrums as long as the waveguide remains single mode and non-radiating. A cover layer can be added to the grating region of a Si photonic waveguide to increase the strength of the grating, modify transition losses from the input waveguide to the grating waveguide region, and/or modify the width of the reflectivity spectrum. For a given grating period, the peak reflection and spectral width of the reflectivity decrease as the duty cycle is decreased or increased from ~50%. For both radiating and multimode structures, the coupling between all modes, power radiated towards the superstrate (upwards), power radiated downwards (substrate) and transmitted power analyzed by Floquet-Bloch, Eigenmode Expansion and Finite Difference Time Domain methods show excellent agreement. Coupling coefficients calculated using analytic formulas are shown to be accurate only for shallow grating depths.

On the Development of Compact HTS Coil Modules for Large Bore High Field Superconducting Magnets

Lower cost, high current density superconducting coil modules producing higher magnetic fields and cooled affordably are crucial for obtaining cost-effective, compact commercial fusion reactors. Accessibility to low cost, higher field magnets (>30 T) is also critical for the discovery of new quantum phenomena in materials, cosmic frontier and other topics in basic science research. The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is working with Princeton University to develop unique large bore, compact superconducting magnets to support science experiments including the development of new instrumentation for condensed matter physics and Axion dark matter search in the cosmic frontier. Core elements of these experiments are unique for access to lower cost, simple fabrication of compact superconducting magnets that can be cooled affordably, while integrated with dedicated science instruments. Conductor qualification and coil design concepts are discussed in support of needs for these experiments. PPPL has the unique expertise and experimental facilities to design, construct and test subscale coil modules for these projects. Compact high field coil modules were fabricated and tested to validate coil design concepts and coil performance. Finally, the design and model coil integration challenges are discussed to identify performance risks and demonstrate feasibility for deploying full scale large bore compact superconducting magnets for cost effective operations of multiple laboratory experiments.

Temperature Dependence of Charge Distributions and Carrier Mobility in an Undoped Si/SiGe Heterostructure

Capacitance–voltage (C–V ) characteristics and carrier transport properties of 2-D electron gases (2DEGs) in an undoped Si/SiGe heterostructure at T = 4 – 35 K are presented here. In this work, two capacitance plateaus due to density saturation of the 2DEG in the buried Si quantum well (QW) are observed and explained by a model of surface tunneling. The peak mobility at 4 K is 4.1 × 10 5 cm 2 /V·s and enhanced by a factor of 1.97 at an even lower carrier density compared to the saturated carrier density, which is attributed to the effect of remote carrier screening. At T = 35 K, the mobility enhancement with a factor of 1.35 is still observed, which suggests the surface tunneling is still dominant.

High mobility in a van der Waals layered antiferromagnetic metal

Van der Waals (vdW) materials with magnetic order have been heavily pursued for fundamental physics as well as for device design. Despite the rapid advances, so far, they are mainly insulating or semiconducting, and none of them has a high electronic mobility—a property that is rare in layered vdW materials in general. The realization of a high-mobility vdW material that also exhibits magnetic order would open the possibility for novel magnetic twistronic or spintronic devices. Here, we report very high carrier mobility in the layered vdW antiferromagnet GdTe 3 . The electron mobility is beyond 60,000 cm 2 V –1 s –1 , which is the highest among all known layered magnetic materials, to the best of our knowledge. Among all known vdW materials, the mobility of bulk GdTe 3 is comparable to that of black phosphorus. By mechanical exfoliation, we further demonstrate that GdTe 3 can be exfoliated to ultrathin flakes of three monolayers.

Weak-field induced nonmagnetic state in a Co-based honeycomb

Layered honeycomb magnets are of interest as potential realizations of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL), a quantum state with long-range spin entanglement and an exactly solvable Hamiltonian. Conventional magnetically ordered states are present for all currently known candidate materials, however, because non-Kitaev terms in the Hamiltonians obscure the Kitaev physics. Current experimental studies of the KQSL are focused on 4 d or 5 d transition metal–based honeycombs, in which strong spin-orbit coupling can be expected, yielding Kitaev interaction that dominates in an applied magnetic field. In contrast, for 3 d -based layered honeycomb magnets, spin-orbit coupling is weak, and thus, Kitaev physics should be substantially less accessible. Here, we report our studies on BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 , for which we find that the magnetic order associated with the non-Kitaev interactions can be fully suppressed by a relatively low magnetic field, yielding a nonmagnetic material and implying the presence of strong magnetic frustration and weak non-Kitaev interactions.

SARS-CoV-2 Infection Severity Is Linked to Superior Humoral Immunity against the Spike

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is currently causing a global pandemic. The antigen specificity of the antibody response mounted against this novel virus is not understood in detail. Here, we report that subjects with a more severe SARS-CoV-2 infection exhibit a larger antibody response against the spike and nucleocapsid protein and epitope spreading to subdominant viral antigens, such as open reading frame 8 and nonstructural proteins. Subjects with a greater antibody response mounted a larger memory B cell response against the spike, but not the nucleocapsid protein. Additionally, we revealed that antibodies against the spike are still capable of binding the D614G spike mutant and cross-react with the SARS-CoV-1 receptor binding domain. Together, this study reveals that subjects with a more severe SARS-CoV-2 infection exhibit a greater overall antibody response to the spike and nucleocapsid protein and a larger memory B cell response against the spike.

Impact of symmetry energy on sound speed and spinodal decomposition in dense neutron-rich matter

Using a meta model for nuclear Equation of State (EOS) with its parameters constrained by astrophysical observations and terrestrial nuclear experiments, we examine effects of nuclear EOS especially its symmetry energy $E$ sym ($ρ$) term on the speed of sound squared $C$ $^2_s$($ρ$) and the critical density ρt where $C$ $^2_s$($ρ_t$) vanishes (indicating the onset of spinodal decomposition) in both dense neutron-rich nucleonic matter relevant for relativistic heavy-ion collisions and the cold $n$ + $p$ + $e$ + $μ$ matter in neutron stars at $β$- equilibrium. Unlike in nucleonic matter with fixed values of the isospin asymmetry $δ$, in neutron stars with a density dependent isospin profile $δ$($ρ$) determined consistently by the $β$-equilibrium and charge neutrality conditions, the $C$ $^2_s$($ρ$) almost always show a peak and then vanishes at $ρ_t$. Furthermore, the latter strongly depends on the high-density behavior of $E$ sym ($ρ$) if the skewness parameter $J$ 0 characterizing the stiffness of high-density symmetric nuclear matter (SNM) EOS is not too far above its currently known most probable value of about -190 MeV inferred from recent Bayesian analyses of neutron star observables. Moreover, in the case of having a super-soft $E$ sym ($ρ$) that is decreasing with increasing density above about twice the saturation density of nuclear matter, the $ρ$ $t$ is significantly lower than the density where the $E$ sym ($ρ$) vanishes (indicating the onset of isospin-separation instability and pure neutron matter formation) in neutron star cores.

Impact of the nuclear equation of state on the formation of twin stars

Twin stars-two stable neutron stars (NSs) with the same mass but different radii have long been proposed to appear as a consequence of a possible first-order phase transition in NS matter. Within a meta-model for the EOS of hybrid stars, we revisit the viability of twin stars and its dependence on numerous parameters characterizing the EOS of nuclear matter, quark matter, and the phase transition between them. While essentially no experimental constraint exists for the last two, parameters characterizing the EOS of neutron-rich nucleonic matter have been constrained within various ranges by terrestrial experiments and astrophysical observations. Within these ranges, the impact of nuclear EOS and crust-core transition density on the formation of twin stars is studied. Here, it is found that the symmetry energy of neutron-rich nucleonic matter notably influences the formation of twin stars, particularly through its slope L and curvature K sym . Conversely, varying the EOS of symmetric nuclear matter within their currently known uncertainty ranges shows minimal influence on the formation of twin stars.

Sampling-based Sublinear Low-rank Matrix Arithmetic Framework for Dequantizing Quantum Machine Learning

We present an algorithmic framework for quantum-inspired classical algorithms on close-to-low-rank matrices, generalizing the series of results started by Tang’s breakthrough quantum-inspired algorithm for recommendation systems [STOC’19]. Motivated by quantum linear algebra algorithms and the quantum singular value transformation (SVT) framework of Gilyén et al. [STOC’19], we develop classical algorithms for SVT that run in time independent of input dimension, under suitable quantum-inspired sampling assumptions. Our results give compelling evidence that in the corresponding QRAM data structure input model, quantum SVT does not yield exponential quantum speedups. Since the quantum SVT framework generalizes essentially all known techniques for quantum linear algebra, our results, combined with sampling lemmas from previous work, suffice to generalize all prior results about dequantizing quantum machine learning algorithms. In particular, our classical SVT framework recovers and often improves the dequantization results on recommendation systems, principal component analysis, supervised clustering, support vector machines, low-rank regression, and semidefinite program solving. We also give additional dequantization results on low-rank Hamiltonian simulation and discriminant analysis. Our improvements come from identifying the key feature of the quantum-inspired input model that is at the core of all prior quantum-inspired results: ℓ 2 -norm sampling can approximate matrix products in time independent of their dimension. We reduce all our main results to this fact, making our exposition concise, self-contained, and intuitive.
