On the measurement of stationary electric fields in air

Applications and measurement methods for field measurements are reviewed. Recent developments using optical technology are examined. The various methods are compared. It is concluded that the best general purpose instrument is the isolated cylindrical field mill, but MEMS technology could furnish better instruments in the future.

(abstract) All Epitaxial Edge-geometry SNS Devices with Doped PBCO and YBCO Normal Layers

We will present our results on tapered-edge-geometry SNS weak link fabricated from c-axis oriented base-, counterelectrode and normal layers using a variety of processing conditions. To date, we have employed a variety of different normal materials (Co-doped YBCO, Y-doped PBCO, Ca-doped PBCO). We have been examining the junction fabrication process in detail and we will present our methods. In particular, we have been examining both epitaxial and non-epitaxial milling mask overlayers and we will present a comparison of both methods. These devices behave similar to the expectations of the resisively shunted junction model and conventional SNS proximity effect models but with some differences which will be discussed. We will present the detailed systematics of our junctions including device parameters versus temperature, rf and dc magnetic response for the various processing conditions.

Paraglider Recovery Systems

In 1945 it occurred to the writer that if we could discover how to make flexible wings that could be packaged and deployed somewhat like a parachute, such wings would have many new applications as well as replacing some parachutes and rigid wings. Previous uses of flexible materials in aerodynamic surfaces - parachutes, kites, boat sails, and wind mills - were reviewed, and some crude experiments were performed with gliders and kites. Before the end of 1948, the device now generally called a paraglider was evolved and developed sufficiently to merit a patent application. The study was continued privately as time permitted, and in 1954 a short paper on the subject was presented to an audience of about 50 Reserve Air Force officers. This paper was given rather wide distribution, although it suffers from lack of the many kite and glider demonstrations of the original presentation. Little serious interest was shown by the aeronautical community, however, until about a year after Sputnik I. In December 1958 the flexible-wing concept was presented to the Langley Committee on General Aerodynamics with the aid of the hurriedly prepared charts shown in figure 1, faithfully reproduced here for historical purposes.

Lightweight coaxial cable connector reduces signal loss

Connectors with milled interface surfaces for perfect electrical contact eliminate secondary- emission discharge and low signal loss in RF coaxial cables. the connectors which contain alignment and centering components for proper joint concentricity are used in communications systems designs.

Tool separates sleeve-type unions without heat

Tool that uses conventional milling and cutting techniques separates sleeve type tubing unions and tubes without using heat. A selection of holders, associated bits, and cutting wheels permits preparation of varied diameter unions.

Gage of 6.5 per cent Si-Fe sheet is chemically reduced

Chemical milling process aids the production of 6.5 percent silicon-iron soft magnetic-alloy sheets to very thin gages. Following conventional rolling to safe gage limits, the material is chemically reduced to the desired gage.

New weldable high strength aluminum alloy developed for cryogenic service

Wrought aluminum alloy has improved low temperature notch toughness and weldability. This alloy can be mill-fabricated to plate and sheet without difficulty. Post-weld aging improves weld ductility and strength properties. A typical treatment is 8 hours at 225 deg F plus 16 hours at 300 deg F.

Continuous internal channels formed in aluminum fusion welds

Process produces continuous internal channel systems on a repeatable basis in 2014-T6 aluminum. Standard machining forms the initial channel, which is filled with tungsten carbide powder. TIG machine fusion welding completes formation of the channel. Chem-mill techniques enlarge it to the desired size.
