Hellas, Ken and Me: Adventures in Exhumation and Inundation

Hellas is the largest and deepest basin on Mars. A 1993 study by Moore and Edgett (GRL, 20, 1599-1602) noted that Hellas undergoes net dust erosion. Thus, the exposed surface must represent whatever lag or rock surface and could not be removed by the strong winds blowing at these low elevations. The particle size distributions and particularly the rock or boulder population in this lag was thought to be potentially useful for distinguishing between processes that formed the lithologic units that comprise Hellas Planitia. Earlier studies had suggested the Hellas floor might be paved with basalt or glacial deposits. Ken, who at the time was working with Viking Orbiter IRTM data knew that there were late mission observations of the Hellas floor acquired though clear skies. His derived thermal inertia from these observations strongly suggested that the abundance of particles larger than coarse sand was very low. Hence, our study concluded that the floor deposits were, among other possibilities, ancient loess or lacustrine deposits. In 2001 a subsequent study on the Hellas basin by Moore and Wilhelms (Icarus, 54, 258-276) proposed that the basin was once a site of an ice covered sea, based on a series of circum-basin scarps that follow constant elevations as well as other landforms seen my Mars Global Surveyor’s MOC (an instrument that Ken played a major role in daily operations and data analysis) and topography derived from MOLA. Subsequently the best contiguous observations of the Hellas basin have been acquired from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Context Camera, which again Ken has been a central player in its operations. Much of what we know about the grain-scale sedimentology of martian lacustrine deposits comes from the Curiosity Rover’s Mars Hand Lens Imager (which Ken was the PI through development and original operations within Gale crater). Under Ken’s watch several members of the Murray Formation were determined to be deposited in a lacustrine environment. A conclusion strongly demonstrated by MHLI imaging. My personal relationship with Hellas isn’t over. The Europa Clipper flew directly over the Hellas basin including its deepest regions. Ther REASON Ice Penetrating Radar system collected data during this flyby ostensibly for calibration, yet the quality of the observations may yet provide new discoveries from Hellas.

New modelling capabilities in IDT

This work concerns the enhanced modelling capabilities of the discrete ordinates transport solver IDT. The novelties introduced allow for modelling unstructured geometries composed by a collection of X/Y segments and circles, and the use of reciprocity and conservation relations reduce the memory imprint as well as the computational cost of the method. IDT decomposes geometries in modular Cartesian patterns, which are the so-called Heterogeneous Cartesian Cells (HCCs), containing a chunk of the original unstructured geometries. Each HCC can be then discretized by superimposing a XY grid to refine locally the HCC. Unlike the most popular MOC, IDT performs the spatial sweeping by directional collision probabilities instead of trajectories. The sources and interface angular fluxes are expanded up to linear order. The accuracy of ray-tracing, the memory imprints together with the novel mesh refinement capabilities have been verified. A first set of preliminary results on PWR lattice problems will be presented in this paper.

Application of linear prolongation to coarse mesh finite difference acceleration in CASMO5

The Coarse-Mesh Finite Difference (CMFD) method has been used for over a decade to accelerate the convergence of the Method of Characteristics (MOC) solution to the two- dimensional particle transport equation in CASMO5. Numerical testing, along with widespread use in production-level calculations, have shown that the current CMFD implementation provides stability and robustness for a wide range of realistic reactor physics problems. However, the recent development of linear prolongation has attracted attention from the community as a way to further improve the performance and stability of CMFD. Two interpolation methods for linear prolongation are presented in this work and implemented into a test version of CASMO5. The performance of the proposed interpolations, referred to as the bilinear and linear directional schemes, is evaluated in terms of runtime relative to the default constant or uniform scaling update. Numerical results indicate that the use of linear prolongation can reduce the transport solver runtime on average by approximately 10% when tested with two hundred randomly selected cases. The new directional linear interpolation, combined with default constant boundary updates, is found to provide the highest reduction in runtime for the cases analyzed. (authors)

The Legendre Polynomial Axial Expansion Method

This work presents a new formulation of the axial expansion transport method explicitly using Legendre polynomials for arbitrarily high-order expansions. This new formulation also features an alternative method of axial leakage calculation to allow for nonextruded flat source region meshes. This alternative axial leakage is introduced alongside a balance equation requirement to ensure that neutron balance is preserved in the coarse mesh for a given axial leakage formulation, which allows for effective coarse mesh finite difference acceleration. A matrix exponential table method is derived to allow for fast computations of arbitrarily high-order matrix exponentials for this work and precludes the need for further research into matrix exponential calculations for this method. Numerical results are presented that demonstrate the stability of the axial expansion method in systems with voidlike regions, showcase the speedup from matrix exponential tables, and investigate the axial convergence of the method in terms of both expansion order and mesh size.

Three-Dimensional Full-Core BEAVRS Using OpenMOC with Transport Equivalence

Using an optimized implementation of the three-dimensional (3D) method of characteristics for neutron transport, along with a novel equivalence method for transport calculations that was designed to correct self-shielding errors from neglecting the angular dependence of resonant group absorption, a 3D full-core light water reactor hybrid stochastic-deterministic eigenvalue calculation was achieved. This paper presents the optimizations developed and compares the transport solutions obtained. For the statepoint, run times near 10 000 CPU hours are achieved—improving on previous works by an order of magnitude—with near 1% error on pin fission to 238 U capture ratios and a few dozen pcms on the eigenvalue.

Ocean Circulation and Biogeochemistry

Dr. Whitt will give an oral presentation on his work on the impact of the ocean’s meridional overturning circulation on North Atlantic Ocean biogeochemical tracer budgets, including nutrients and carbon. The results are derived from two versions of the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean (ECCO) model, including the latest release V4r5 (at 1 degree resolution) and the actively developed LLC270 (at 1/3 degree resolution).

3D full core BEAVRS using OpenMOC with transport equivalence

Using an optimized implementation of the three-dimension method of characteristics for neutron transport, as well as a novel equivalence method for transport calculations de- signed to recover self-shielding errors from neglecting the angular dependence of reso- nant group absorption, a 3D full core light water reactor hybrid stochastic-deterministic eigenvalue calculation was achieved. This paper presents the optimizations developed and compares the transport solutions obtained. It realizes a runtime near 6,000 CPU hours for the statepoint, an improvement of an order of magnitude on previous works, with less than 1% error on pin fission/U-238 capture ratios and a few dozen pcms on the eigenvalue.
