The X-ray structure of the Perseus cluster of galaxies

The X-ray source in the Perseus cluster has been studied both by the Copernicus satellite and by sounding-rocket instruments flown by Columbia University. The spatial and spectral data from these observations are examined. A surface brightness distribution is obtained which shows that the source consists of a compact core associated with NGC 1275 and a more extended emission volume. The structure of the central core region has been examined by means of an image reconstruction technique, revealing a steeply declining luminosity function and north-south elongation. The spectrum of the emission of the core region is distinguished from that of the surrounding area and found to be consistent with a hydrogen column density of 2.5 x 10 to the 21th/sq cm. A comparison between the isothermal and adiabatic gas sphere models is presented which shows the need for at least two components to provide the X-ray emission.

Uranus - Disk structure within the 7300-A methane band

Orthogonal narrow-band (100 A) photoelectric slit scan photometry of Uranus has been used to infer the basic two-dimensional structure of the disk within the 7300-A methane band. Numerical image reconstruction and restoration techniques have been applied to quantitatively estimate the degrees of polar and limb brightening on the planet. Through partial removal of atmospheric smearing, an effective spatial resolution of approximately 0.9 arcsec has been achieved. Peak polar, limb, and central intensities on the disk are in the respective proportions 3:2:1. In addition, the bright polar feature is displaced from the geometric pole towards the equator of the planet.

High resolution imaging at large telescopes

Image recovery at a resolution limited only by diffraction is now possible at large telescopes. The theory of speckle image reconstruction is explained and the current status of a video recording and digitization system for the reconstruction procedure is described. Potential applications of the process when used with very large telescopes are discussed. The constraints on telescope design imposed by these techniques are listed.

Aliasing and blurring in 2-D sampled imagery

The quality of image reconstructions from discrete data suffers not only from the blurring of spatial detail caused by limitations in the spatial frequency response of electrooptical systems, but also from the aliasing generated if spatial detail has been undersampled. Previous studies have observed that reasonable spot intensity profiles and photosensor aperture shapes of equivalent size result in about equal blurring but that some profiles and shapes suppress aliasing better than others. This paper presents quantitative results of the magnitude of aliasing and blurring as a function of random radiance fields typical for natural scenes and of spatial responses and sampling intervals typical for TV cameras and optical-mechanical scanners. These results indicate that aliasing may often be a larger source of degradation than either blurring or electronic noise.

Pulsed holography for combustion diagnostics

Image reconstruction and data extraction techniques were considered with respect to their application to combustion diagnostics. A system was designed and constructed that possesses sufficient stability and resolution to make quantitative data extraction possible. Example data were manually processed using the system to demonstrate its feasibility for the purpose intended. The system was interfaced with the PDP-11-04 computer for maximum design capability. It was concluded that the use of specialized digital hardware controlled by a relatively small computer provides the best combination of accuracy, speed, and versatility for this particular problem area.

Geometric representation methods for multi-type self-defining remote sensing data sets

Efficient and convenient representation of remote sensing data is highly important for an effective utilization. The task of merging different data types is currently dealt with by treating each case as an individual problem. A description is provided of work which is carried out to standardize the multidata merging process. The basic concept of the new approach is that of the self-defining data set (SDDS). The creation of a standard is proposed. This standard would be such that data which may be of interest in a large number of earth resources remote sensing applications would be in a format which allows convenient and automatic merging. Attention is given to details regarding the multidata merging problem, a geometric description of multitype data sets, image reconstruction from track-type data, a data set generation system, and an example multitype data set.

Multifrequency Aperture-Synthesizing Microwave Radiometer System (MFASMR). Volume 1

Background material and a systems analysis of a multifrequency aperture - synthesizing microwave radiometer system is presented. It was found that the system does not exhibit high performance because much of the available thermal power is not used in the construction of the image and because the image that can be formed has a resolution of only ten lines. An analysis of image reconstruction is given. The system is compared with conventional aperture synthesis systems.

Radiographic evidence of disuse osteoporosis in the monkey /M. nemestrina/

Radiological techniques were utilized for monitoring progressive changes in compact bone in the tibia of monkeys during experimentally induced osteopenia. Bone mass loss in the tibia during restraint was evaluated from radiographs, from bone mineral analysis, and from images reconstructed from gamma ray computerized tomography. The losses during 6 months of restraint tended to occur predominantly in the proximal tibia and were characterized by subperiosteal bone loss, intracortical striations, and scalloped endosteal surfaces. Bone mineral content in the cross section of the tibia declined 17-21%. In 6 months of recovery, the mineral content of the proximal tibia remained depressed.

Viewer Makes Radioactivity "Visible"

Battery operated viewer demonstrates feasibility of generating threedimensional visible light simulations of objects that emit X-ray or gamma rays. Ray paths are traced for two pinhold positions to show location of reconstructed image. Images formed by pinholes are converted to intensified visible-light images. Applications range from radioactivity contamination surveys to monitoring radioisotope absorption in tumors.

Speckle imaging for planetary research

The present study of speckle imaging technique effectiveness encompasses image reconstruction by means of a division algorithm for Fourier amplitudes, and the Knox-Thompson (1974) algorithm for Fourier phases. Results which have been obtained for Io, Titan, Pallas, Jupiter and Uranus indicate that spatial resolutions lower than the seeing limit by a factor of four are obtainable for objects brighter than Uranus. The resolutions obtained are well above the diffraction limit, due to inadequacies of the video camera employed. A photon-counting camera has been developed to overcome these difficulties, making possible the diffraction-limited resolution of objects as faint as Charon.

High spatial resolution IR observations of young stellar objects - A possible disk surrounding HL Tauri

High spatial resolution images of the T Tauri star HL Tau were obtained at 1.6 microns and 2.2 microns. The original images as well as maximum entropy image reconstructions reveal a circumstellar envelope structure, similar at both wavelenghts, and extended along P.A. = 112 deg; the 10 percent width of the structure is 1.9 sec (300 AU at 160 pc). The extended structure is interpreted as light scattered toward earth by dust in a disk surrounding this young stellar object. Polarization measurements made at 2.2 microns support this hypothesis. The total solid particle mass is, at minimum, 5 x 10 to the -7th solar mass.

SAMSI: An orbiting spatial interferometer for micro-arc second astronomical observations

The concept and performance of (SAMSI) Spacecraft Array for Michelson Spatial Interferometry, an orbiting spatial interferometer comprised of three free-flying spacecraft, two collector telescopes and a central mixing station are described. In the one-dimensional interferometry mode orbits exist which provide natural scanning of the baseline. These orbits place extremely small demands on thrusters and fuel consumption. Resolution of 0.00001 arcsecond and magnitude limits of mv = 15 to 20 are achievable in a single orbit. In the imaging mode, SAMSI could synthesize images equivalent to those produced by equal diameter filled apertures in space, making use of the fuel resupply capability of a space station. Simulations indicate that image reconstruction can be performed with milliarcsecond resolution to a visual magnitude 12 in 12 hr of spiral scanning integration time.

EOS radiometer concepts for soil moisture remote sensing

Preliminary work with aperture synthesis concepts for EOS is reported. The effects of nonvanishing bandwidths on image reconstruction in aperture synthesis system was studied. It is found that nonvanishing bandwidths introduce errors in off-axis pixels when naive Fourier processing is used. The net effect is for bandwidth to limit sensor field-of-view. To quantify this effect a computer program was written which is documented. Example runs are included which illustrate the resultant radiometric errors and effective fields-of-view for a plausible simple sensor.

Infrared speckle observations of Io - An eruption in the Loki region

Speckle observations of Jupiter's satellite Io at a wavelength of 5 micrometers during July 1984 resolved the disk and showed emission from a hot spot in the Loki region. The hot spot contributed a flux approximately equal to 60 percent of that from the disk. Images reconstructed by means of the Knox-Thompson algorithm showed the spot moving across the disk as the satellite rotated. It was located at 301 deg + or - 6 deg west longitude, 10 deg + or - 6 deg north latitude, and had a radiance of (2.96 + or - 0.54) x 10 to the 22nd ergs/sec cm sr/A where A is the area of the spot. For an assumed temperature of 400 K, the area of the source would be 11,400 square kilometers. An active 'lava lake' similar to that seen by Voyager may be the source of the infrared emission.

Aperture synthesis using orbiting telescopes

A study was carried out to determine the feasibility, with current technology, of performing aperture synthesis using two telescopes orbiting the earth in coordinated orbits separated by approximately 10 m to 1 km. The objective was to determine whether there is a practical alternative to a very large, deployed, servo-controlled submillimeter telescope (i.e., the Large Deployable Reflector) for obtaining high-resolution submillimeter images of astronomical sources. It is found that suitable classes of orbits exist which can provide good UV coverage over the entire sky and the real-time correlation of wideband signals can be performed in orbit using current technology. The most difficult task appears to be the real-time determination of the orientation of the baseline vector in a stable coordinate system. A plausible scheme has been identified for the determination of an arbitrary direction to within 0.003 arcsec in an astrometric coordinate system. This scheme not only makes submillimeter interferometric image reconstruction possible but should also have numerous other applications.

High resolution imaging

Diffraction-limited telescopic observations were obtained of solar system objects and a program of research into Uranus, Neptune, Pluto and the asteroids based upon the data obtained was persued. Two camera systems appropriate for this work were developed. Most importantly, the PAPA photon address camera was developed and proven. Algorithms were developed for both phase and amplitude recovery and were validated on theoretical and laboratory data and to a limited extent on telescopic data. A laboratory simulator was constructed that was used for development but is also available for controlled investigation of image reconstruction. During 1985 two successful expeditions were made to Hawaii and Cerro Tololo and a large body of data on Pluto, Uranus, Neptune and two asteroids are on tape.

Structural characterization and gas reactions of small metal particles by high resolution in-situ TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) and TED (Transmission Electron Diffraction)

The detection and size analysis of small metal particles supported on amorphous substrates becomes increasingly difficult when the particle size approaches that of the phase contrast background structures of the support. An approach of digital image analysis, involving Fourier transformation of the original image, filtering, and image reconstruction was studied with respect to the likelihood of unambiguously detecting particles of less than 1 nm diameter on amorphous substrates from a single electron micrograph.

Holographic, particle imaging and data reduction at Spectron Development Laboratores

Spectron has been deeply involved in the development and use of a wide variety of particle and flow diagnostic, electro optical instruments. Holography and imaging systems have played an important role in this work, but the extraction of data from images and holograms have always presented a limit to their use. Systems and techniques were devised to speed up and automate the extraction of data from holographic and conventional interferograms, particle images and holograms, and other types of optical flow visualization techniques. An IBM/AI based image analyzer was developed that is capable of automatically analyzing many useful image types including interferograms. A key feature of this system is the low total cost of the required hardware. In the particle field work, a commercial diffraction field analyzer was adopted to the image reconstructed from a hologram. This could expand the use of holography in particle diagnostics greatly.
