Defect passivation in nanostructured silica for stable birefringence in polarization optics

Nanostructured materials with anisotropic microstructure exhibit direction-dependent refractive index, known as form birefringence. One of the main advantages of these nanostructured materials is that the ease of fabrication significantly reduces the cost of production. However, their birefringence is affected by humidity as well as time. The hypothesis is that defects, particularly silanols, are responsible. Here, in this work, we present the use of hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) vapor as a passivation strategy. Using spectroscopic ellipsometry and Raman scattering, the data show that HMDS successfully passivates silanol groups and promotes O-Si-O bond formation, resulting in improved stability. The results demonstrate a simple method to enhance the reliability of all-silica polarization optics offering potential advancements for high-power laser components.

Design of a broadband, high-power, off-axis spiral polarization reflector

Spirally polarized beams are known to produce a strong longitudinal field under high numerical aperture focusing. Here, we report on the design of a reflective optical element with an off-axis geometry that is capable of transforming a uniformly polarized beam into a predominantly spirally polarized beam. By utilizing the retardance present in Fresnel reflection, our device can operate over a broad range of wavelengths. The output polarization and intensity structure of a beam passing through the reflector are calculated using polarization and scalar ray tracing. Vector diffraction is used to calculate the polarization and intensity structure under $f/0.656$ focusing. The off-axis reflective design is well-suited for high-power laser applications and could enable current and future laser-based particle accelerators to achieve strong longitudinal fields at focus.

Characterization of a multi-kW, large-aperture gas-cooled Faraday rotator

We characterize a large-aperture gas-cooled Faraday rotator (FR) designed to mitigate stress-induced depolarization in high-energy, high-power laser systems. The rotator, based on ceramic TGG, was tested using a 150 mW probe beam at 1047 nm and a pump beam at 1070 nm. Compensating for the birefringence induced by the surrogate depolarization plate at 3.3 kW of effective pump power, the rotator reduces the spatially in-homogeneous depolarized light containing linear, circular, and elliptical polarization states to nearly linear with approximately 0.8% (or −21 dB) of residual depolarized energy. The FR demonstrated effective depolarization compensation across its 58×58 mm 2 aperture.

Gamma-radiation-induced negative nonlinear absorption in quartz glass

The effect of ionizing radiation on the nonlinear optical properties of materials needs to be considered for applications that employ high-power laser pulses in extreme radiation environments. The Heraeus Infrasil302 optical quartz glass was irradiated by gamma rays, and its nonlinear absorption was measured using the open-aperture Z-scan technique with nanosecond laser pulses. Irradiation results in a negative nonlinear absorption coefficient whose magnitude increases with irradiation dose. Nonlinear absorption coefficients of -0.78, -1.14, -1.29, and -1.88~ × ~10 -13 m/W are measured for gamma doses of 600 krad, 1.2 Mrad, 3.6 Mrad, and 10 Mrad, respectively. Thermal annealing restores the optical properties of quartz-glass to their unirradiated values. It is suggested that metallic impurities introduced by the manufacturing process have a role in inducing saturated absorption in irradiated quartz glass, which manifests as negative nonlinear absorption coefficient, and is demonstrated by comparing Infrasil302 quartz results to equivalent irradiated measurements for Spectrosil2000 quartz.

Improved high-resolution mapping of phase-matching conditions in second-order nonlinear crystals via imaging

Large-aperture nonlinear crystals for frequency conversion and parametric amplification exhibit spatial variations in phase-matching conditions, which affect the performance of high-power laser systems. We demonstrate significant improvements in speed and resolution to a technique that spatially maps these phase-matching conditions using imaging of the beam resulting from detuned second-harmonic generation. The phase-matching conditions at the pyramidal sector boundary of partially deuterated potassium dihydrogen phosphate (DKDP) are mapped with sub-0.1-mm resolution. We examine the effect of further increases in scan rate on the precision of the technique and demonstrate a scan rate of 0.8 cm 2 per minute at the aforementioned resolution.

New laser technique for the identification of molecular transitions.

A laser technique is proposed which may be useful for the assignment of molecular spectra in the visible and infrared regions. The method is based on the resonant interaction of two monochromatic fields with a Doppler-broadened three-level system. Under the appropriate conditions the absorption line shape of one of the transitions shows a complex structure over a narrow section of the Doppler profile, and for sufficiently high laser power the line shape splits into a number of narrow peaks. Analysis of the resulting intensity pattern leads to unambiguous assignment of the angular momentum quantum numbers of the three levels involved. A simple set of rules is given to facilitate interpretation of spectra. The line shapes discussed are also relevant to monochromatic optical pumping of gases and unidirectional laser amplifiers.

Effects of focusing on third-order nonlinear processes in isotropic media

Third-order nonlinear processes in isotropic media have been successfully used for tripling the efficiency of high-power laser radiation for the production of tunable and fixed-frequency coherent vacuum UV radiation and for up-conversion of IR radiation. The effects of focusing on two processes of this type are studied theoretically and experimentally.

Advanced space system concepts and their orbital support needs (1980 - 2000). Volume 2: Final report

The results are presented of a study which identifies over 100 new and highly capable space systems for the 1980-2000 time period: civilian systems which could bring benefits to large numbers of average citizens in everyday life, much enhance the kinds and levels of public services, increase the economic motivation for industrial investment in space, expand scientific horizons; and, in the military area, systems which could materially alter current concepts of tactical and strategic engagements. The requirements for space transportation, orbital support, and technology for these systems are derived, and those requirements likely to be shared between NASA and the DoD in the time period identified. The high leverage technologies for the time period are identified as very large microwave antennas and optics, high energy power subsystems, high precision and high power lasers, microelectronic circuit complexes and data processors, mosaic solid state sensing devices, and long-life cryogenic refrigerators.

Binary phase digital reflection holograms - Fabrication and potential applications

A novel technique for the fabrication of binary-phase computer-generated reflection holograms is described. By use of integrated circuit technology, the holographic pattern is etched into a silicon wafer and then aluminum coated to make a reflection hologram. Because these holograms reflect virtually all the incident radiation, they may find application in machining with high-power lasers. A number of possible modifications of the hologram fabrication procedure are discussed.

Radiation-driven MHD systems for space applications

High-power radiation such as concentrated solar or high-power laser radiation is considered as a driver for magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) systems which could be developed for efficient power generation and propulsion in space. Eight different systems are conceivable since the MHD systems can be classified in two: plasma and liquid-metal MHD's. Each of these systems is reviewed and solar- (or laser-) driven MHD thrusters are proposed.

Relativistic electromagnetic waves in an electron-ion plasma

High power laser beams can drive plasma particles to relativistic energies. An accurate description of strong waves requires the inclusion of ion dynamics in the analysis. The equations governing the propagation of relativistic electromagnetic waves in a cold electron-ion plasma can be reduced to two equations expressing conservation of energy-momentum of the system. The two conservation constants are functions of the plasma stream velocity, the wave velocity, the wave amplitude, and the electron-ion mass ratio. The dynamic parameter, expressing electron-ion momentum conversation in the laboratory frame, can be regarded as an adjustable quantity, a suitable choice of which will yield self-consistent solutions when other plasma parameters were specified. Circularly polarized electromagnetic waves and electrostatic plasma waves are used as illustrations.

Range and range rate system

A video controlled solid state range finding system which requires no radar, high power laser, or sophisticated laser target is disclosed. The effective range of the system is from 1 to about 200 ft. The system includes an opto-electric camera such as a lens CCD array device. A helium neon laser produces a source beam of coherent light which is applied to a beam splitter. The beam splitter applies a reference beam to the camera and produces an outgoing beam applied to a first angularly variable reflector which directs the outgoing beam to the distant object. An incoming beam is reflected from the object to a second angularly variable reflector which reflects the incoming beam to the opto-electric camera via the beam splitter. The first reflector and the second reflector are configured so that the distance travelled by the outgoing beam from the beam splitter and the first reflector is the same as the distance travelled by the incoming beam from the second reflector to the beam splitter. The reference beam produces a reference signal in the geometric center of the camera. The incoming beam produces an object signal at the camera.

Flow diagnostics in unseeded air

Several approaches are presented for the quantitative measurement of flowfield parameters in high-speed flows. The techniques are developed for the study of air flows in the Mach 2 to Mach 3 regime and can be extended to the hypersonic and subsonic regimes in a straightforward manner. Instantaneous two-dimensional cross-sectional images of the density using UV Rayleigh scattering and the measurement of velocity profiles using the RELIEF technique are shown. The RELIEF technique employs two high-powered lasers separated in frequency by the vibrational frequency of oxygen molecules to write lines across the flowfield by stimulated Raman scattering. The preliminary results indicate that the UV Rayleigh scattering may also be extended to the measurement of velocity and temperature fields by using an atomic or molecular absorption filter window, and that the RELIEF technique can be extended to marking shaped volumetric points or arrays of points in the flowfield for velocity and vorticity measurements.

Comparison of stratospheric ozone profiles and their seasonal variations as measured by lidar and Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment during 1988

A ground-based, high power, laser remote sensing system for measurements of stratospheric ozone concentration profiles has been in operation at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory Table Mountain Facility located in southern California, since January 1988. The seasonal variations observed in the ozone profiles, during 1988 and as a function of altitude, are described here. These profiles are compared with those from the Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment satellite instrument made within a radius of 1000 km from the lidar and also with the zonal mean measurements made in the band 34.4 +/- 5 deg. Comparison with the proposed new CIRA ozone reference model has also been carried out. The seasonal variations, between 25 and 50 km, observed by the two instruments and indicated by the reference model are in good agreement.
