Effects of low-frequency voltage on nonlinear standing wave excitation, plasma uniformity, and ion dynamics in dual-frequency asymmetric capacitive discharges

Abstract It is known that in very-high-frequency (VHF) capacitively coupled plasmas, the higher harmonics generated by nonlinear sheath motion can enhance the standing wave effect (SWE), which can lead to center-peaked plasma density profiles. In this work, an improved nonlinear electromagnetic model incorporating a transmission line model, an electron momentum balance model, a bulk plasma model, a collisionless nonlinear numerical sheath model, and an ion Monte-Carlo collision (MCC) model is developed to study the effects of low-frequency (LF) voltage V L on the nonlinear standing wave excitation, plasma uniformity, and ion energy and angular distribution functions (IEDFs and IADFs) in dual-frequency (DF) asymmetric capacitive argon discharges at relatively low pressure of 3 Pa. The plasma diffusion in the radial direction and ion dynamics within the LF oscillating sheath are self-consistently considered. The LF voltage V L at 2 MHz varies from 0 to 700 V while the HF voltage V H at 60 MHz is fixed at 100 V. Simulation results indicate that without the addition of an LF source (i.e. V L = 0 V), there are a considerable number of high-order harmonics with short wavelengths, leading to significant SWE and central peak in the radial plasma density profile. Nevertheless, the high-order harmonic excitations tend to be weakened and merely occur around the phase of the full LF sheath collapse due to a shorter characteristic damping time of the surface waves as V L increases. This, combined with increased surface wavelengths of both the driving frequency and the higher harmonics at a higher V L , leads to suppressed standing waves and improved plasma uniformity. Meanwhile, the simulations show that both the low and the high energy peaks of IEDF move towards higher energies, and the energy peak separation width ΔEbecomes wider with the increase of V L . The IEDF at the radial center of the powered electrode exhibits a broader ΔEthan that at the edge. For the IADF, an increased V L results in more ions incident on the electrode with a smaller deflection angle. Because of a thinner sheath and a higher sheath voltage at the electrode center, the peak value of IADF at the electrode center is greater than that at the edge.

Multiview Incomplete Knowledge Graph Integration with application to cross-institutional EHR data harmonization

Objective: The growing availability of electronic health records (EHR) data opens opportunities for integrative analysis of multi-institutional EHR to produce generalizable knowledge. A key barrier to such integrative analyses is the lack of semantic interoperability across different institutions due to coding differences. We propose a Multiview Incomplete Knowledge Graph Integration (MIKGI) algorithm to integrate information from multiple sources with partially overlapping EHR concept codes to enable translations between healthcare systems. Methods: The MIKGI algorithm combines knowledge graph information from (i) embeddings trained from the co-occurrence patterns of medical codes within each EHR system and (ii) semantic embeddings of the textual strings of all medical codes obtained from the Self-Aligning Pretrained BERT (SAPBERT) algorithm. Due to the heterogeneity in the coding across healthcare systems, each EHR source provides partial coverage of the available codes. MIKGI synthesizes the incomplete knowledge graphs derived from these multi-source embeddings by minimizing a spherical loss function that combines the pairwise directional similarities of embeddings computed from all available sources. MIKGI outputs harmonized semantic embedding vectors for all EHR codes, which improves the quality of the embeddings and enables direct assessment of both similarity and relatedness between any pair of codes from multiple healthcare systems. Results: With EHR co-occurrence data from Veteran Affairs (VA) healthcare and Mass General Brigham (MGB), MIKGI algorithm produces high quality embeddings for a variety of downstream tasks including detecting known similar or related entity pairs and mapping VA local codes to the relevant EHR codes used at MGB. Based on the cosine similarity of the MIKGI trained embeddings, the AUC was 0.918 for detecting similar entity pairs and 0.809 for detecting related pairs. For cross-institutional medical code mapping, the top 1 and top 5 accuracy were 91.0% and 97.5% when mapping medication codes at VA to RxNorm medication codes at MGB; 59.1% and 75.8% when mapping VA local laboratory codes to LOINC hierarchy. When trained with 500 labels, the lab code mapping attained top 1 and 5 accuracy at 77.7% and 87.9%. MIKGI also attained best performance in selecting VA local lab codes for desired laboratory tests and COVID-19 related features for COVID EHR studies. Compared to existing methods, MIKGI attained the most robust performance with accuracy the highest or near the highest across all tasks. Conclusions: The proposed MIKGI algorithm can effectively integrate incomplete summary data from biomedical text and EHR data to generate harmonized embeddings for EHR codes for knowledge graph modeling and cross-institutional translation of EHR codes.

Two-Dimensional Palladium Diselenide with Strong In-Plane Optical Anisotropy and High Mobility Grown by Chemical Vapor Deposition

Two-dimensional (2D) palladium diselenide (PdSe 2 ) has strong interlayer coupling and a puckered pentagonal structure, leading to remarkable layer-dependent electronic structures and highly anisotropic in-plane optical and electronic properties. However, the lack of high-quality, 2D PdSe 2 crystals grown by bottom-up approaches limits the study of their exotic properties and practical applications. In this work, chemical vapor deposition growth of highly crystalline few-layer (≥2 layers) PdSe 2 crystals on various substrates is reported. The high quality of the PdSe 2 crystals is confirmed by low-frequency Raman spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and electrical characterization. In addition, strong in-plane optical anisotropy is demonstrated via polarized Raman spectroscopy and second-harmonic generation maps of the PdSe 2 flakes. A theoretical model based on kinetic Wulff construction theory and density functional theory calculations is developed and described the observed evolution of “square=like” shaped PdSe 2 crystals into rhombus due to the higher nucleation barriers for stable attachment on the (1,1) and (1,-1) edges, which results in their slower growth rates. Finally, few-layer PdSe 2 field-effect transistors reveal tunable ambipolar charge carrier conduction with an electron mobility up to ≈294 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which is comparable to that of exfoliated PdSe 2 , indicating the promise of this anisotropic 2D material for electronics.

Tailoring the Thickness‐Dependent Optical Properties of Conducting Nitrides and Oxides for Epsilon‐Near‐Zero‐Enhanced Photonic Applications

Abstract The unique properties of the emerging photonic materials, conducting nitrides and oxides, especially their tailorability, large damage thresholds, and, importantly, the so‐called epsilon‐near‐zero (ENZ) behavior, have enabled novel photonic phenomena spanning optical circuitry, tunable metasurfaces, and nonlinear optical devices. This work explores direct control of the optical properties of polycrystalline titanium nitride (TiN) and aluminum‐doped zinc oxide (AZO) by tailoring the film thickness, and their potential for ENZ‐enhanced photonic applications. This study demonstrates that TiN–AZO bilayers support Ferrell–Berreman modes using the thickness‐dependent ENZ resonances in the AZO films operating in the telecom wavelengths spanning from 1470 to 1750 nm. The bilayer stacks also act as strong light absorbers in the ultraviolet regime using the radiative ENZ modes and the Fabry–Perot modes in the constituent TiN films. The studied Berreman resonators exhibit optically induced reflectance modulation of 15% with picosecond response time. Together with the optical response tailorability of conducting oxides and nitrides, using the field enhancement near the tunable ENZ regime can enable a wide range of nonlinear optical phenomena, including all‐optical switching, time refraction, and high‐harmonic generation.

A Lead‐Free Ferroelectric 2D Dion–Jacobson Tin Iodide Perovskite

2D hybrid organic–inorganic halide perovskites emerge as a new class of 2D semiconductors with the potential to combine excellent optoelectronic properties with symmetry-enabled properties such as ferroelectricity. Although many lead-based ferroelectric 2D halide perovskites are reported, there is yet to be a conclusive report of ferroelectricity in tin-based 2D perovskites. Here, the structures and properties of a new series of 2D Dion–Jacobson (DJ) Sn perovskites: (4AMP)SnI 4 , (4AMP)(MA)Sn 2 I 7 , and (4AMP)(FA)Sn 2 I 7 (4AMP = 4-(aminomethyl)piperidinium, MA = methylammonium, and FA = formamidinium), are reported. Structural characterization reveals that (4AMP)SnI 4 is polar with in-plane spontaneous polarization whereas (4AMP)(MA)Sn 2 I 7 and (4AMP)(FA)Sn 2 I 7 are centrosymmetric. Further, (4AMP)SnI 4 displays second harmonic generation (SHG) and polarization-electric field hysteresis measurements confirm it is ferroelectric with a spontaneous polarization of 10.0 µC cm −2 at room temperature. (4AMP)SnI 4 transitions into a centrosymmetric structure above 367 K. As the first direct experimental observation of the spontaneous ferroelectric polarization of a Sn-based 2D hybrid perovskite, this work opens up environmentally friendly 2D tin halide perovskites for ferroelectricity and other physical property studies.

Nonresonant Raman Control of Ferroelectric Polarization

Important advances is recently made in the search for materials with complex multi-phase landscapes that host photoinduced metastable collective states with exotic functionalities. In almost all cases so far, the desired phases are accessed by exploiting light–matter interactions via the imaginary part of the dielectric function through above-bandgap or resonant mode excitation. Nonresonant Raman excitation of coherent modes is experimentally observed and proposed for dynamic material control, but the resulting atomic excursion is limited to perturbative levels. Here, in this study, this challenge is overcome by employing nonresonant ultrashort pulses with low photon energies well below the bandgap. Using mid-infrared pulses, ferroelectric reversal is induced in lithium niobate, and the large-amplitude mode displacements are characterized through femtosecond stimulated Raman scattering and second harmonic generation. This approach, validated by first-principle calculations, defines a novel method for synthesizing hidden phases with unique functional properties and manipulating complex energy landscapes at reduced energy consumption and ultrafast speeds.

Tunable Magnetic and Optical Anisotropy in ZrO 2 ‐Co Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites

Abstract Metamaterials have gained great research interest in recent years owing to their potential for property tunability, multifunctionality, and property coupling. As a new group of self‐assembled thin films, vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN)‐based hybrid metamaterials have been demonstrated with significant anisotropic physical properties and a broad range of property tailorability, such as optical anisotropy, magnetic anisotropy, hyperbolic dispersion, and enhanced second harmonic generation properties. Herein, self‐assembled ZrO 2 ‐Co nanocomposite films, with high epitaxial quality and ultra‐fine vertically aligned Co nanopillars (with an average diameter of ≈2 nm) embedded in a ZrO 2 matrix, are fabricated using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The Co pillar density can be effectively tuned by varying the Co concentration in the target, which results in tunable optical properties and magnetic properties. Specifically, a high saturation magnetization of 100 emu cm −3 , strong out‐of‐plane magnetic anisotropy and tailorable magnetization properties are achieved via tuning the Co nanopillar density. Coupled with hyperbolic dispersion of dielectric constant from 950 to 1500 nm in wavelength, plasmonic Co metal nanopillars, and the unique dielectric ZrO 2 matrix, this new nanoscale hybrid metamaterial shows great potential for future integrated optical and magnetic device designs.

Photophysics and Spin-Physics Studies on Persistent Upconversion Luminescence from Nonlinearly Polarizable Ferroelectric-Like Lattice Prepared by Orderly Packing Donor–Acceptor Structures under Multiphoton Excitation

The ultralong-lived upconversion luminescence with the lifetime of 0.48 s in a broad spectral range (530–650 nm) is observed in CD49 (9-(3-(5-bromopyridin-3-yl)prop-2-yn-1-yl)-9H-carbazole) crystal designed with donor–acceptor (carbazole–pyridine) structures under infrared excitation, simultaneously accompanied with second harmonic generation (SHG). This phenomenon indicates orderly packing donor–acceptor structures form a nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice with ultralong-lived light-emitting states, leading to much prolonged nonlinear optical behaviors. The persistent upconversion luminescence together with SHG is largely reduced when lowering crystallinity. This implies that nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice provides the necessary condition to generate persistent upconversion luminescence. Evidently, persistent upconversion luminescence becomes completely lacking when only using ultralong-lived light-emitting states without nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice, exampled by 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol matrix. Magneto-photoluminescence shows that persistent upconversion luminescence is essentially a super-delayed fluorescence from crystalline intermolecular charge-transfer excitons formed in the nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice. Magnetodielectrics indicate crystalline intermolecular charge-transfer excitons are coupled with nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice, leading to prolonged nonlinear optical behaviors shown as persistent upconversion luminescence through super delayed fluorescence. In conclusion, therefore, crystalline intermolecular charge-transfer excitons formed in nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice provide an interesting platform to generate prolonged nonlinear optical behaviors toward developing persistent upconversion luminescence under multiphoton excitation.

Asymmetric Character of the Ferroelectric Phase Transition and Charged Domain Walls in a Hybrid Improper Ferroelectric

Abstract In improper ferroelectrics, the spontaneous ordering is typically driven by a structural distortion or a magnetic spin alignment. The induced electric polarization is only a secondary effect. This dependence is a rich source for unusual phenomena and ferroelectric domain configurations for proper, polarization‐driven ferroelectrics. This study focuses on the polar domain structure and the hysteretic behavior at the ferroelectric phase transition in Ca 3 Mn 1.9 Ti 0.1 O 7 as a representative of the recently discovered hybrid improper ferroelectric class of multiferroics. Combining optical second harmonic generation and Raman spectroscopy gives access to the spontaneous structural distortion and the resulting improper electric polarization. This study shows that hybrid improper ferroelectrics contrast proper and improper ferroelectrics in several ways. Most intriguingly, adjacent ferroelectric domains favor head‐to‐head and tail‐to‐tail domain walls over charge‐neutral configurations. Furthermore, the phase transition occurs in an asymmetric fashion. The regime of phase coexistence of the nonpolar and polar phases shows a clear and abrupt upper temperature limit. In contrast, the coexistence toward low temperatures is best described as a fade‐out process, where 100‐nm‐sized islands of the nonpolar phase expand deep into the polar phase.

Materials Engineering of Violin Soundboards by Stradivari and Guarneri

Abstract We investigated the material properties of Cremonese soundboards using a wide range of spectroscopic, microscopic, and chemical techniques. We found similar types of spruce in Cremonese soundboards as in modern instruments, but Cremonese spruces exhibit unnatural elemental compositions and oxidation patterns that suggest artificial manipulation. Combining analytical data and historical information, we may deduce the minerals being added and their potential functions—borax and metal sulfates for fungal suppression, table salt for moisture control, alum for molecular crosslinking, and potash or quicklime for alkaline treatment. The overall purpose may have been wood preservation or acoustic tuning. Hemicellulose fragmentation and altered cellulose nanostructures are observed in heavily treated Stradivari specimens, which show diminished second‐harmonic generation signals. Guarneri's practice of crosslinking wood fibers via aluminum coordination may also affect mechanical and acoustic properties. Our data suggest that old masters undertook materials engineering experiments to produce soundboards with unique properties.

Tailored Frequency Conversion in Nonlinear Subwavelength Grating Metaslabs

The use of metaslab waveguides consisting of subwavelength gratings (SWGs) is proposed as a highly flexible approach to obtain phase‐matched frequency conversion in nonlinear integrated devices. Control over the phase matching (PM) condition is achieved through modification of the linear modal propagation constants by the SWG. The method is experimentally demonstrated by fabrication of 0.4 mm‐long GaAs metaslabs designed for second harmonic generation of near‐infrared light. A controlled spectral shift of up to 100 nm in the PM condition, relative to a uniform slab is observed. Excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and finite‐difference eigenmode simulations, which predict a tunable frequency conversion bandwidth of ∼300 nm for the design parameters. The different regimes of PM control supported by the structure are discussed. This work highlights the potential of SWGs as building blocks for tailored frequency conversion in nonlinear integrated devices.

BaCu 2 SiS 4 : A New Member of the A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 Chalcogenide Family with a Chiral Crystal Structure

Abstract Noncentrosymmetric ternary and quaternary chalcogenides are studied as promising nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the mid‐infrared region. Here, we report the synthesis of a new material BaCu 2 SiS 4 in the A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 family ( A =divalent metal; B =monovalent metal; M =tetrel, Q =chalcogen), and discuss its crystal structure, thermal stability, optical behavior, and electronic structure. BaCu 2 SiS 4 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric chiral space group P 3 2 21 with lattice parameters a =6.1440(3) Å, c =15.3542(8) Å, V =501.95(6) Å 3 , Z =3. The structure features helical channels formed by corner‐sharing [CuS 4 ] and [SiS 4 ] tetrahedral units. Synthesis was carried out in a molten salt flux, as opposed to a traditional solid‐state route from elements, to minimize the formation of a competing ternary phase, Ba 2 SiS 4 . BaCu 2 SiS 4 is a semiconductor with an experimentally‐determined direct bandgap of ~2.2 eV. The material exhibits second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, confirming the noncentrosymmetric nature of the structure. Analysis of reported A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 crystal structures pointed out a correlation among potential structure types and the radii of the constituent elements. Total energy calculations were carried out to explore the relative stability of several reported crystal structures in this family of compounds.

Phagosomal chloride dynamics in the alveolar macrophage

Acidification in intracellular organelles is tightly linked to the influx of Cl – counteracting proton translocation by the electrogenic V-ATPase. We quantified the dynamics of Cl – transfer accompanying cargo incorporation into single phagosomes in alveolar macrophages (AMs). Phagosomal Cl – concentration and acidification magnitude were followed in real time with maximal acidification achieved at levels of approximately 200 mM. Live cell confocal microscopy verified that phagosomal Cl – influx utilized predominantly the Cl – channel CFTR. Relative levels of elemental chlorine (Cl) in hard X-ray fluorescence microprobe (XFM) analysis within single phagosomes validated the increase in Cl – content. XFM revealed the complex interplay between elemental K content inside the phagosome and changes in Cl – during phagosomal particle uptake. Cl – -dependent changes in phagosomal membrane potential were obtained using second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. These studies provide a mechanistic insight for screening studies in drug development targeting pulmonary inflammatory disease.

Synthesis, structure, linear and nonlinear optical properties of noncentrosymmetric quaternary diamond-like semiconductors, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (CZGSe) and the novel Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7

In this work, two quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) in the Cu-Zn-Ge-Se system, the known Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (also referred to as CZGSe) and the new Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , are compared in terms of their crystal structures, electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Both compounds were prepared by high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 degrees C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structure of Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 . The structures of both Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 can be considered as derivatives of cubic diamond. Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a reduced symmetry due to the cation ordering pattern, adopts the Cu 4 NiSi 2 S 7 structure type, with space group C2. The corner-sharing tetrahedra in Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 are slightly distorted because the charge for some of the S 2 - anions is not compensated by the first-nearest-neighbor cations. Rietveld refinements using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were used to assess the phase purity of the samples and confirm the bulk structural behavior. Diffuse reflectance UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy shows that Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 have direct optical bandgaps of 1.38 and 0.91 eV, respectively. Electronic structure calculations implementing density functional theory confirm the direct bandgap for Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a calculated value of 0.62 eV. Both compounds are air stable, thermally stable up to relatively high temperatures, undergo phase transitions and have wide windows of optical clarity. The Kurtz-Perry powder technique was used to determine the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses using a commercial AgGaSe 2 standard. While Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 displays a weak SHG response, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 exhibits a response that is greater than several benchmark materials, with a large SHG coefficient, χ (2) , of 43 ± 6 pm/V at λ = 2900 nm.

Pd and octahedra do not get along: Square planar [PdS 4 ] units in non-centrosymmetric La 6 PdSi 2 S 14

Non-linear optical (NLO) materials require a balance of high second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal and laser damage threshold (LDT), as well as phase matchable behavior. Herein, we report a new member of the (RE) 6 (TM) x (Tt) 2 Q 14 family of compounds, La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 , which, unlike all other reported TM analogues crystallizing in hexagonal P6 3 space group, crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic P2 1 space group. The crystal structure contains chains of edge-sharing distorted square planar [PdS 4 ] units. The square-planar coordination of Pd in La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 exhibits remarkable NLO properties with high SHG (3.7 × AgGaS 2 ) and LDT (3 × AgGaS 2 ) values as well as phase matchability. This shows the promise of novel materials with distorted structural motifs for enhanced NLO properties. Further, upon formation of bimetallic chiral sulfides containing both Cu and Pd, Cu occupies the opposite faces of the octahedra forming [CuS 3 ] units while Pd can be stabilized in the center of PdS 6 octahedra in the hexagonal P6 3 crystal structure of La 6 Pd 0.5 CuSi 2 S 14 . This suggests that it is possible to form mixed metal systems which could further enhance NLO properties by incorporation of additional structural distortions.

Detection of the keto-enol tautomerization in acetaldehyde, acetone, cyclohexanone, and methyl vinyl ketone with a novel VUV light source

The discovery of enols in combustion environments and our atmosphere has garnered increasing attention to the many unanswered questions surrounding enol chemistry. The scarcity of experimental data concerning these enols renders combustion and atmospheric models with a lack of constraining parameters, leading to varying computational predictions. Experimental detection is difficult because mass spectrometry, a powerful tool for probing a wide variety of species, cannot distinguish between enols and their thermodynamically favorable ketone isomers. A solution to this ambiguity is to use tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light from a synchrotron to identify the presence of the enol by its lower ionization energy compared to the isomer. We present a tabletop-scale VUV light source that implements highly cascaded harmonic generation, a new regime of cascaded nonlinear optics, to provide a set of spectral lines spaced by 1.2 eV. We demonstrate that the variety of photon energies available allows us to detect the keto-enol tautomerization of four aldehydes and ketones. By combining this novel VUV light source with an established microreactor, we first revisit the formation of vinyl alcohol from acetaldehyde and confirm that the observed isomerization is indeed unimolecular. Secondly, we observe the thermal tautomerization of acetone to propen-2-ol for the first time. Finally, we observe the thermal tautomerization of cyclohexanone to 1-cyclohexenol and methyl vinyl ketone to 2-hydroxybutadiene, where the results are in good agreement with those reported at a synchrotron. Furthermore, our measurements can be used to constrain models, inform future experimental studies of enol reactivity, and potentially enhance current understanding of combustion and environmental chemistry.
