NucD-23 Nuclear Diagnostics Development: The future of neutron imaging and gamma reaction history

The Neutron Imaging team has deployed novel, active detection systems along two lines of sight at NIF. Studies aimed to characterize NIS sensitivity to implosion shape will be carried out to further extend reconstruction capabilities. Additionally, an improved camera timing system that will reduce uncertainties stemming from bang time jitter will also be fielded. The NIF GRH data recording system is more then 10 years old needs to be updated. Bandwidth and noise are a key limiting factor for improving data quality. New high bandwidth and low noise components will be tested at OMEGA in advance before fielding the components at NIF.

Amendment to Programmatic Agreement among the U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration, Los Alamos Field Office, the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Office and the Advisory Council on History Preservation Concerning Management of the Historic Properties of Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico (AGREEMENT)

The Field Office has a cultural resources program manager. The LANL Management and Operating Contractor has a staff of cultural resource specialists who meet the qualifications set forth in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Professional Qualifications (36 CFR Part 61), or work under the supervision of individuals who meet these qualifications. Any future Management and Operating Contractor will have a staff of Secretary of the Interior-qualified cultural resource specialists.

Computational Modeling and Simulation for Nonproliferation: The History (and Present) of Monte Carlo and the MCNP(R) Code at Los Alamos [Slides]

The emergence of the Monte Carlo method as a research tool springs from work done at Los Alamos in the 1940s.Monte Carlo and the MCNP Code have been and continue to be developed at Los Alamos for many decades. From basic science in support of understanding nuclear interaction physics to global security applications, application uses of the code are extensive. Recent R&D projects and code modernization efforts make the MCNP code a great tool for nuclear nonproliferation applications. In collaboration with nuclear safeguards experts, new training has just recently been developed to help new practitioners learn how to use the code for nuclear safeguards applications.

History and Future of Isotope Production

Operations at the IPF were initiated in October 1976. LAMPF was delivering 800 MeV protons at a current of 300 µA. Initially, only pure-metal targets were selected for irradiation. These included Mo, Ni, Ta, Si, V, Al and Cu, which ranged in mass from a few to several hundred g. One program required a multi-Ci quantity of 88 Y that necessitated the irradiation and processing of more than 5 kg of Mo metal. As experience was gained, it was learned that oxide and salt targets could safely be irradiated, and eventually the sweeping and cold trapping of radioxenon gas from a molten CsCl during irradiation. Operations ended in 1992.

How We Do Our Work Is as Important as What We Do: A History of Los Alamos National Laboratory Operations

Los Alamos National Laboratory is known for its world-renowned research and Nobel Prize–winning scientists. Few know about the support required to keep the Laboratory running. This book takes you behind the scenes for a closer look at Laboratory operations and the individuals, programs, and facilities of yesteryear and today. From infrastructure, security, staffing, and many other facets, Laboratory operations is what makes the science happen.

Brief History and Summary of the PDV [Slides]

The early development of the PDV was not a straightforward process. There were many fortuitous events that occurred over several years to make it happen. The drive toward more PDV channels per digitizer was initially driven by the high cost of the digitizer. The optical pin dome diagnostic for the national labs was the driver for very large channel count.

Deep Learning Accelerated History Matching and Forecasting in Geologic CO 2 Sequestration [Slides]

We have successfully developed a predictive workflow for the Geologic CO 2 Sequestration using a deep learning model based on the Fourier Neural Operator. The workflow has high accuracy for predicting pressure & saturation during the injection and post-injection periods and has decent accuracy for predicting water and CO 2 production rates during injection period. It is necessary to train exclusive DNN models for pressure prediction in long term GCS, but for saturation prediction, we can use a single model to predict it.

Why the United States? Why NRIC? US Advanced Nuclear Ambitions: History and Future

The United States is the birthplace of modern atomic technology. It was responsible for the development of the first nuclear bomb during World War II as well as subsequent decades of world-leading research into the peaceful applications of the atom for energy generation, medicine, industry, agriculture and home appliances. Today, 30 countries use nuclear power to produce energy with the United States being the largest producer in terms of total gigawatt hours (GWh).

Stripping Foils at the RHIC Injectors: A History

Stripping foils are used throughout Collider-Accelerator Department to strip ions of unwanted electrons. This is done in stages throughout the complex to optimize the transmission of particles. For polarized protons, they are injected into the AGS Booster as H-, and then stripped to H+. For ions from the tandem source, there are two stripping foils: one at the center and the other at the end of the tandem. The tandem foils will not be covered in this document. For ions out of the EBIS source, there is no use of stripping foils upstream of injection into the Booster. All ions that are not fully stripped in Booster are stripped further in the Booster to AGS (BTA) transfer line stripping foil assembly. Finally, any ions that are not fully stripped in the AGS are either stripped in the AGS to RHIC transfer line stripping foil, or as they are being dumped in the AGS by the plunging stripping foil (PSF) dependent on the particles intensity and charge. The BTA foil is the workhorse of the complex, having to provide the desired charge state of ions as light as O, and as heavy as Uranium. Optimizing the stripping efficiency to the desired charge state, while minimizing the energy lost and emittance growth from transiting the foil, requires careful consideration of the foil materials and thicknesses. This paper serves an overview of stripping foils at C-AD, with a review of foils from the construction of the AGS Booster to now.

Blank Pages from Lab history: The Lavender Scare

In the wake of Soviet development of atomic weaponry and revelations about Soviet espionage during and immediately after World War II, the United States was caught up in a wave of anti-Communist hysteria – the “Red Scare” – that defined the early years of the Cold War. Between 1950 and 1954, the House of Representatives’ Un-American Affairs Committee, led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, launched thousands of “loyalty investigations” targeting individuals across government agencies, academia, and the Hollywood film industry (famous targets included Charlie Chaplin and Lucille Ball). Any behavior outside of societal norms was viewed as a potential sign of closet communism. Careers — and lives — were ruined as a result.
