Electronic and vibrational properties of bulk Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 from first-principles calculations

Here we use density functional theory based ab initio calculations to investigate the structural, vibrational, magnetic, and electronic properties of the layered ferromagnet Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 (CGT) that has attracted attention for potential spintronic applications. We optimize the structure for a fixed c/a ratio. Our results are in excellent agreement with experimental data on structure, phonons, and electronic properties. The use of van der Waals interactions and relativistic spin-orbit coupling yields accurate lattice constants and interlayer distances. Simultaneously, the adopted theoretical methods lead to a rigorous description of the vibrational normal modes, as well as the valence bands, that are in excellent agreement with Raman spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy spectra, respectively. The magnetic moment is slightly overestimated, and the magnetic anisotropy has the correct sign but is greater in magnitude than that in experiment. We find that inclusion of the on-site Coulomb repulsion on Cr−3d orbitals worsens agreement with experiment, in contrast to previous studies. Our results provide a path toward ab initio analysis of magnetic heterostructures based on CGT.

Lattice vibrations and energy landscape of the isoelectronic semiconductor series CuBr, ZnSe, GaAs, and Ge: The special case of CuBr and its $\mathcal{d}$-level chemistry

Here we have examined the lattice vibrations and the energy landscape of the isoelectronic diamond and zincblende semiconductor series CuBr, ZnSe, GaAs, and Ge. Vibrations are found to be an increasing function of ionicity, with the cation sublattice always vibrating more strongly than the anion sublattice. These findings are consistent with density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the energy landscape and temperature-dependent molecular dynamics simulations of the atomic-position fluctuations. For CuBr, inclusion of the Cu 3d Hubbard U term is found necessary to stabilize the zincblende structure and to bring its vibrational amplitudes into agreement with experiment. In addition, vibrations are found to strongly affect the CuBr near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure that we have successfully modeled by including displacements in our theoretical Bethe-Salpeter equation calculations. Reverse Monte Carlo structural refinements using large atomic configurations to simultaneously fit x-ray absorption and x-ray total-scattering data support these conclusions, and they reveal strong Cu-Br first-neighbor correlations and asymmetric distributions of interatomic distances in the temperature ranges of both negative and positive thermal expansion. Delineation of the CuBr valence band photoelectron spectrum into its Cu 3d and Br 4p states uniquely reveals their covalent mixing and further supports the DFT results.

Local lattice distortions and electronic orders in strongly correlated systems by resonant total x-ray scattering: A case study of A Pt 2 X 2 intermetallics ( A = U , Ce, or La and X = Si or Ge)

Revealing local lattice distortions in physical systems is nontrivial, largely because such structural features often are not necessarily amenable to traditional crystallographic investigations. This poses limits to our understanding of the underlying physic, particularly in the case of strongly correlated systems where structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom are intertwined. Using resonant total x-ray scattering coupled to differential pair distribution function analysis, we reveal the presence of pronounced local lattice distortions in the square net Pt planes in the prototypical strongly correlated APt 2 X 2 intermetallics (A = U, Ce or La and X = Si or Ge). The distortions are present before charge density wave, magnetic, Kondo lattice coherence and/or superconducting orders emerge in these materials and, as density functional calculations suggest, are likely to affect them. Finally, our study sheds light on the poorly known interactions between electronic orders and structural disorder in strongly correlated systems and also demonstrates an advanced experimental approach to determine it that is relevant to any physical system showing deviations from perfect crystallinity.

Probing quantum criticality in ferromagnetic CeRh 6 Ge 4

CeRh 6 Ge 4 is unusual in that its ferromagnetic transition can be suppressed continuously to zero temperature, i.e., to a ferromagnetic quantum-critical point (QCP), through the application of modest hydrostatic pressure. This discovery has raised the possibility that the ferromagnetic QCP may be of the Kondo-breakdown type characterized by a jump in Fermi volume, to which thermopower S measurements should be sensitive. Further, though S/T changes both sign and magnitude around the critical pressure P c ≈ 0.8 GPa, these changes are not abrupt but extend over a pressure interval from within the ferromagnetic state up to P c . Together with temperature and pressure variations in electrical resistivity and previously reported heat capacity, thermopower results point to the near coincidence of two sequential effects near P c , delocalization of 4f degrees of freedom through orbital-selective hybridization followed by quantum criticality of itinerant ferromagnetism.

Ab Initio Uncertainty Quantification of Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay in 76 Ge

The observation of neutrinoless double-beta (0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽) decay would offer proof of lepton number violation, demonstrating that neutrinos are Majorana particles, while also helping us understand why there is more matter than antimatter in the Universe. If the decay is driven by the exchange of the three known light neutrinos, a discovery would, in addition, link the observed decay rate to the neutrino mass scale through a theoretical quantity known as the nuclear matrix element (NME). Accurate values of the NMEs for all nuclei considered for use in 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽 experiments are therefore crucial for designing and interpreting those experiments. Here, we report the first comprehensive ab initio uncertainty quantification of the 0⁢𝜈⁢𝛽⁢𝛽-decay NME, in the key nucleus 76 Ge. Here, our method employs nuclear strong and weak interactions derived within chiral effective field theory and recently developed many-body emulators. Our result, with a conservative treatment of uncertainty, is an NME of 2.60$^{+1.28}_{−1.36}$, which, together with the best-existing half-life sensitivity and phase-space factor, sets an upper limit for effective neutrino mass of 187$^{+205}_{−62}$ meV. The result is important for designing next generation germanium detectors aiming to cover the entire inverted hierarchy region of neutrino masses.

Measurement of the Isolated Nuclear Two-Photon Decay in Ge 72

The nuclear two-photon or double-gamma (2 γ ) decay is a second-order electromagnetic process whereby a nucleus in an excited state emits two gamma rays simultaneously. To be able to directly measure the 2⁢ γ decay rate in the low-energy regime below the electron-positron pair-creation threshold, we combined the isochronous mode of a storage ring with Schottky resonant cavities. The newly developed technique can be applied to isomers with excitation energies down to ~100 keV and half-lives as short as ~10 ms. The half-life for the 2⁢ γ decay of the first-excited 0 + state in bare 72 Ge ions was determined to be 23.9(6) ms, which strongly deviates from expectations.

Anomalous Electrical Transport in the Kagome Magnet YbFe 6 ⁢Ge 6

Two-dimensional (2D) kagome metals offer a unique platform for exploring electron correlation phenomena derived from quantum many-body effects. Here, in this study, we report a combined study of electrical magnetotransport and neutron scattering on YbFe 6 ⁢Ge 6 , where the Fe moments in the 2D kagome layers exhibit an 𝐴-type collinear antiferromagnetic order below 𝑇 N ≈ 500 K. Interactions between the Fe ions in the layers and the localized Yb magnetic ions in between reorient the 𝑐-axis-aligned Fe moments to the kagome plane below 𝑇 SR ≈ 63 K. Our magnetotransport measurements show an intriguing anomalous Hall effect (AHE) that emerges in the spin-reorientated collinear state, accompanied by the closing of the spin anisotropy gap as revealed from inelastic neutron scattering. The gapless spin excitations and the Yb-Fe interaction are able to support a dynamic scalar spin chirality, which explains the observed AHE. Therefore, our Letter demonstrates that spin fluctuations may provide an additional scattering channel for the conduction electrons and give rise to AHE even in a collinear antiferromagnet.

Observation of a smoothly tunable Dirac point in Ge ( Bi x Sb 1 - x ) 2 Te 4

State-of-the-art topological devices require the use of topologically protected surface states to drive electronic transport. Here, we examine a tunable topological system, Ge(Bi x Sb 1-x ) 2 Te 4 , for a range of $\mathcal{x}$ values from 0 to 1, using a combination of Fourier transform scanning tunneling spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results show that the Dirac point shifts linearly with $\mathcal{x}$, crossing the Fermi energy near $\mathcal{x}$=0.7. This observation of a smoothly tunable, isolated Dirac point crossing through the topological transport regime and having strong linear dependence with substitution can be critical for future topological spintronics applications.

Highly tunable band inversion in AB 2 X 4 (A=Ge, Sn, Pb; B=As, Sb, Bi; X=Se, Te) compounds

Topological materials have been discovered so far largely by searching for existing compounds in crystallographic databases, but there are potentially new topological materials with desirable features that have not been synthesized. One of the desirable features is high tunability resulting from the band inversion with a very small direct band gap, which can be tuned by changes in pressure or strain to induce a topological phase transition. Here, using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we have studied the septuple layered AB 2 X 4 series compounds, where A=(Ge, Sn and Pb), B=(As, Sb and Bi), and X=(Se and Te). With the DFT thermodynamic stability validated by the already-reported compounds in these series, we predict stable Se compounds, which are not found in crystallographic database. Among them, we find that GeBi 2 Se 4 and GeSb 2 Se 4 having a small direct band gap at the Z point are very close to a strong topological insulator, which can be tuned by a moderate pressure to induce the band inversion. Importantly, the topological features with the small direct band gap are well isolated in both momentum and energy windows, which offers high tunability for studying the topological phase transition.

Role of local atomic short-range order distribution in alloys: Why it matters in Si-Ge-Sn alloys

Short-range order (SRO) in alloys refers to deviations from a perfectly random distribution of atoms in lattice sites within a short distance. Conventionally, the degree of the deviations has been quantified using an average SRO parameter, but such a coarse-grained description does not reflect how the deviations occur at a finer level. Here we show the distribution of the local atomic SRO parameter, which describes the occurring frequency of a local structural motif, carries the crucial information for both structures and properties in Si-Ge-Sn alloy system. Here this is demonstrated through the fact that distinct SRO structures can exhibit the same average SRO parameter but very different distributions and disparate electronic structures. By deliberately creating special structures that explicitly match the structural information at different levels, we show the distribution of local atomic SRO parameters contain critical structural features that are missing in the average SRO parameter but can substantially contribute to material’s properties. Our finding thus calls for the need for considering the finer structural details to effectively describe alloys’ structures and properties.

Much more to explore with an oxidation state of nearly four: Pr valence instability in intermetallic m -Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5

For some intermetallic compounds containing lanthanides, structural transitions can result in intermediate electronic states between trivalency and tetravalency; however, this is rarely observed for praseodymium compounds. The dominant trivalency of praseodymium limits potential discoveries of emergent quantum states in itinerant 4$f$ 1 systems accessible using Pr 4+ -based compounds. Here, we use in situ powder x-ray diffraction and in situ electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) to identify an intermetallic example of a dominantly Pr 4+ state in the polymorphic system Pr 2 Co 3 Ge 5 . The structure-valence transition from a nearly full Pr 4+ electronic state to a typical Pr 3+ state shows the potential of Pr-based intermetallic compounds to host valence-unstable states and provides an opportunity to discover previously unknown quantum phenomena. In addition, this work emphasizes the need for complementary techniques like EELS when evaluating the magnetic and electronic properties of Pr intermetallic systems to reveal details easily overlooked when relying on bulk magnetic measurements alone.

Energy filtering–induced ultrahigh thermoelectric power factors in Ni 3 Ge

Traditional thermoelectric materials rely on low thermal conductivity to enhance their efficiency but suffer from inherently limited power factors. Innovative pathways to optimize electronic transport are thus crucial. Here, we achieve ultrahigh power factors in Ni 3 Ge-based systems through an unconventional thermoelectric materials design principle. When overlapping flat and dispersive bands are engineered to the Fermi level, charge carriers can undergo intense interband scattering, yielding an energy filtering effect similar to what has long been predicted in certain nanostructured materials. Via a multistep DFT-based screening method developed here, we find a family of L1 2 -ordered binary compounds with ultrahigh power factors up to 11 mW m −1 K −2 near room temperature, which are driven by an intrinsic phonon-mediated energy filtering mechanism. Our comprehensive experimental and theoretical study of these intriguing materials paves the way for understanding and designing high-performance scattering-tuned metallic thermoelectrics.

Electron collisional excitation cross-section measurements and modeling for select Ni-like to Ge-like gold transitions

We have experimentally determined the electron collisional excitation cross-sections for several 3d→4f and 3d→5f excitations in Ni- to Ge-like Au at energies of ~ 0.4, 1, 2, and 3 keV above threshold energy, E T , for the 3d→4f excitations ( E T ~ 2.5 keV) and ~ 0.2, 1, and 2 keV above threshold energy for the 3d→5f excitations ( E T ~ 3.3 keV). The cross-section measurements are possible by using the GSFC micro-calorimeter to record emission spectra from beam plasmas created in the Livermore EBIT-I electron beam ion trap. The cross-sections are experimentally determined from the ratio of the measured intensities of the collisionally excited lines to the intensities of the radiative recombination lines in monoenergetic electron distribution EBIT-I plasmas. The effects of polarization and Auger processes in the beam plasmas are accounted for in the cross-section determination. Experimentally determined cross-sections are compared with those from HULLAC, DWS, and FAC calculations. Finally, the measurements exhibit significant differences with the calculations of these excitation cross-sections.

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) studies the onset of deconfinement in hadron matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi^, \pm K^\pm$ p and $\bar{p}$ produced in the 20% most central Be+$^9$ Be collisions at beam momenta of 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A ${\mathrm{Ge} \mathrm{V}}\!/\!c$. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm/ \pi^\pm$ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm$ transverse mass distributions are close to those found in inelastic $p+p$ reactions. The new results are compared to the world data on $p+p and Pb+Pb collisions as well as to predictions of the Epos , U r qmd , Ampt , Phsd and Smash models.

Spectra and mean multiplicities of $π^-$ in central 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V / c beam momenta measured by the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS

The physics goal of the strong interaction program of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is to study the phase diagram of hadronic matter by a scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei with various sizes at a set of energies covering the SPS energy range. This paper presents differential inclusive spectra of transverse momentum, transverse mass and rapidity of π - mesons produced in central 40 Ar+ 45 Sc collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A Ge V /c. Energy and system size dependence of parameters of these distributions – mean transverse mass, the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra, width of the rapidity distribution and mean multiplicity – are presented and discussed. Furthermore, the dependence of the ratio of the mean number of produced pions to the mean number of wounded nucleons on the collision energy was derived. The results are compared to predictions of several models.

Search for the critical point of strongly-interacting matter in $^{40}$Ar + $^{45}$Sc collisions at 150A Ge V /c using scaled factorial moments of protons

The critical point of dense, strongly interacting matter is searched for at the CERN SPS in $^{40}$Ar + $^{45}$Sc collisions at 150A Ge V /c. The dependence of second-order scaled factorial moments of proton multiplicity distribution on the number of subdivisions of transverse momentum space is measured. The intermittency analysis is performed using both transverse momentum and cumulative transverse momentum. For the first time, statistically independent data sets are used for each subdivision number. The obtained results do not indicate any statistically significant intermittency pattern. An upper limit on the fraction of correlated proton pairs and the power of the correlation function is obtained based on a comparison with the Power-law Model developed for this purpose.

Measurements of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ spectra in $^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$ collisions at 13A to 150A $\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$

The NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron studies the onset of deconfinement in strongly interacting matter through a beam energy scan of particle production in collisions of nuclei of varied sizes. This paper presents results on inclusive double-differential spectra, transverse momentum and rapidity distributions and mean multiplicities of $\pi ^\pm $, $K^\pm $, p and $\bar{p}$ produced in $^{40}\hbox {Ar+}^{45}\hbox {Sc}$ collisions at beam momenta of 13A, 19A, 30A, 40A, 75A and 150A $\text{ Ge }\hspace{-1.00006pt}\text{ V }\!/\!c$. The analysis uses the 10% most central collisions, where the observed forward energy defines centrality. The energy dependence of the $K^\pm $/$\pi ^\pm $ ratios as well as of inverse slope parameters of the $K^\pm $ transverse mass distributions are placed in between those found in inelastic $p+p$ and central Pb + Pb collisions. The results obtained here establish a system-size dependence of hadron production properties that so far cannot be explained either within statistical or dynamical models.

Laser-induced patterning for a diffraction grating using the phase change material of Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST) as a spatial light modulator in X-ray optics: a proof of concept

The proposed X-ray spatial light modulator (SLM) concept is based on the difference of X-ray scattering from amorphous and crystalline regions of phase change materials (PCMs) such as Ge 2 Sb 2 Te 5 (GST). In our X-ray SLM design, the “ on” and “ off” states correspond to a patterned and homogeneous state of a GST thin film, respectively. The patterned state is obtained by exposing the homogeneous film to laser pulses. In this paper, we present patterning results in GST thin films characterized by microwave impedance microscopy and X-ray small-angle scattering at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource.
