Novel, Simplified Air Delivery System Design Gets Commercialized

Typical air delivery systems require contractors to design systems that are complex, difficult to integrate into the framing and structural components of a home, and often do not meet the optimization demands of newer energy-efficient homes. This complex process can be a burden to already strained construction labor costs. However, a new technology simplifies duct system design to improve comfort and eliminate sources of installation error for residential air delivery systems.

Getting to Zero—and Beyond: California’s aspiration to become the first carbon-negative state appears to be achievable and affordable.

As a response to mounting concerns about the consequences of unabated climate change, California established in 2018 an aspirational goal of achieving a completely carbon-neutral economy by 2045, and becoming carbon negative after that. The state has long championed climate-friendly policies such as using energy more efficiently, generating power from renewable sources, and putting cleaner cars on the road, among other emissions-reduction strategies. Unfortunately, California’s own evaluations indicate that even when these are successful—after intensive electrification of the economy and a drastic shift away from fossil fuels—there will remain substantial greenhouse gas emissions. The residuals come from widespread small sources that are hard to control, and from larger sources that cannot be controlled in time.

Getting to 95

Members of the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association (TVPPA) have the opportunity to interconnect up to 5% of their annual energy requirements in self generation. TVA, their wholesale supplier, is encouraging solar. This presentation introduces IEEE 1547 2018 and provides some high level information on solar cost.

Let's Get Greedy: The L-Prize Invites Innovators to 'Have It All'

LEDs have arrived. They’re long-lasting, energy-efficient, and priced competitively with the products they’re replacing. Case closed and let’s move on, right? And yet… transformative lighting has the capacity do more, with excellent energy and application efficiency, data-driven functionality, material sustainability, and the ability to make buildings better places to work, live, learn, and heal – for people in all communities. This article on the DOE L-Prize invites competitors to participate in the $12.2 million L-Prize competition. The competition sets ambitious innovation goals for efficacy, quality of light, connectivity, material sustainability, and diversity, equity, and inclusion. LED lighting offers the opportunity to address all of these - to "have it all". The article will be published in the August edition of Lighting Design and Application (LD&A) magazine.

Localized High-Concentration Electrolytes Get More Localized

Liquid electrolytes in batteries are typically treated as macroscopically homogeneous ionic transport media, despite having complex chemical composition and atomistic solvation structures, thus leaving a knowledge gap of microstructural characteristics. A promising electrolyte system design has recently been developed with the title of a localized high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE). These electrolytes are a summation of three components – a charge-carrying salt, a solvent that solvates the salt, and a diluent that is sparingly interactive with the salt in terms of ion solvation. This creates the perception of a high-concentration electrolyte (HCE) with high anion-cation interactions that supports a salt-derived, stable solid-electrolyte interphase, while an LHCE improves bulk electrolyte properties, such as ionic conductivity and viscosity, when compared to an HCE. Much trial by error design of this LHCE concept has been supported by simulations to confirm ionic interactions, cycling data to confirm cell stability, and post-mortem analysis to provide evidence of mechanisms. However, a systematic design to extend the capabilities of LHCEs is still to be desired. Here, we analyzed a specific LHCE mixture to dictate the best viable mixture that extends the localization of solvation structures while maintaining viable cell-level capabilities. We seek to observe and understand solvent-to-salt interactions that impact electrolyte performance. These interactions range from single-ion solvation, multidentate interactions (i.e., solvation-driven clustering), to more widespread network-level interactions. With the support of both experimental and computational analysis of different electrolyte features, we have begun a methodology of formulating the most ideal LHCE mixtures for improving the cyclability of high-capacity battery chemistries.

Implementing the Inflation Reduction Act: What We Expect and How We Might Get There

This presentation summarizes findings from three related studies: Evaluating Impacts of the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law on the U.S. Power System; The Roles and Impacts of PV-Battery Hybrids in a Decarbonized U.S. Electricity Supply; and Optimal Design and Deployment of Wind-Solar Hybrids in Low-Carbon U.S. Power System. The compilation of results from these three studies indicate that the Inflation Reduction Act could drive significant deployment of variable renewable energy technologies, but the level of deployment depends on our ability to build new transmission projects (among other factors). Hybrid systems can help, to an extent, to facilitate greater shares of wind/solar with lesser amounts of transmission expansion.
