An investigation of the optimization of parameters affecting the implementation of fourier transform spectroscopy at 20-500 micron from the C-141 airborne infrared observatory

A program for 20-500 micron spectroscopy from the NASA flying C141 infrared observatory is being carried out with a Michelson interferometer. The parameters affecting the performance of the instrument are studied and an optimal configuration for high performance on the C-141 aircraft is recommended. As each parameter is discussed the relative merits of the two modes of mirror motion (rapid scan or step and integrate) are presented.

Study of dynamic emission spectra from lubricant films in an elastohydrodynamic contact using Fourier transform spectroscopy

Infrared emission spectra were obtained through a diamond window from lubricating fluids in an operating sliding elastohydrodynamic contact and analyzed by comparison with static absorption spectra under similar pressures. Different loads, shear rates and temperatures were used. Most of the spectra exhibited polarization characteristics, indicating directional alignment of the lubricant in the EHD contact. Among the fluids studied were a "traction" fluid, an advanced ester, and their mixtures, a synthetic paraffin, a naphthenic reference fluid (N-1), both neat and containing 1 percent of p-tricresyl phosphate as an anti-wear additive, and a C-ether. Traction properties were found to be nearly proportional to mixture composition for traction fluid and ester mixtures. The anti-wear additive reduced traction and fluid temperature under low loads but increased them under higher loads, giving rise to formation of a friction polymer.

Airborne infrared astronomical observations by Fourier transform spectroscopy

Infrared spectroscopic observations from NASA-operated aircraft constitute a rapidly maturing application of FTS methods initially developed for ground-based telescopes. Coupled to airborne telescopes up to 36 in. in diameter, these experiments are now producing new astronomical results as exciting and unexpected as those derived from Connes's first high resolution planetary observations at mountain-top observatories. This review examines the special problems of the IR spectral region that led to aircraft observatories and includes a brief survey of the facilities themselves and their modes of operation. The special problems of operating FTS devices on aircraft and the scientific results achieved with current capabilities are discussed. Finally, airborne observations are compared to the ultimate in high-altitude observing platforms: earth-orbiting cooled and uncooled telescopes carried by the Space Shuttle vehicle.

The determination of gravity anomalies from geoid heights using the inverse Stokes' formula, Fourier transforms, and least squares collocation

A numerical method for the determination of gravity anomalies from geoid heights is described using the inverse Stokes formula. This discrete form of the inverse Stokes formula applies a numerical integration over the azimuth and an integration over a cubic interpolatory spline function which approximates the step function obtained from the numerical integration. The main disadvantage of the procedure is the lack of a reliable error measure. The method was applied on geoid heights derived from GEOS-3 altimeter measurements in the calibration area of the GEOS-3 satellite.

Faster fourier transformation: The algorithm of S. Winograd

The new DFT algorithm of S. Winograd is developed and presented in detail. This is an algorithm which uses about 1/5 of the number of multiplications used by the Cooley-Tukey algorithm and is applicable to any order which is a product of relatively prime factors from the following list: 2,3,4,5,7,8,9,16. The algorithm is presented in terms of a series of tableaus which are convenient, compact, graphical representations of the sequence of arithmetic operations in the corresponding parts of the algorithm. Using these in conjunction with included Tables makes it relatively easy to apply the algorithm and evaluate its performance.

Focal-plane optimization for detector noise limited performance in cryogenic Fourier transform spectrometer /FTS/ sensors

A study was performed to determine the optimum focal plane configuration including optics, filters and detector-preamplifier selection. The configuration was optimized particularly with respect to minimizing the noise level, but fabrication considerations for a cryogenic environment were also taken into account. The noise terms from source, background, detector electronics and charged particle radiation were quantitatively evaluated. It appears that noise equivalent spectral radiance less than 10 to the -11th W/sq cm per sr per kayser can be achieved between 2.5 and 20 microns.

Optical alignment of high resolution Fourier transform spectrometers

Remote sensing, high resolution FTS instruments often contain three primary optical subsystems: Fore-Optics, Interferometer Optics, and Post, or Detector Optics. We discuss the alignment of a double-pass FTS containing a cat's-eye retro-reflector. Also, the alignment of fore-optics containing confocal paraboloids with a reflecting field stop which relays a field image onto a camera is discussed.

Effect of interferogram smearing on atmospheric limb sounding by Fourier transform spectroscopy

An analytical method for the analysis of absorption spectra obtained from the interferograms of an interferometer operated in the solar occultation mode, in which an interferogram is smeared with individual interferogram components generated by the passage of rays at different tangent altitudes, is described. The creation of strong sidelobes on absorption lines by the interferogram smearing leads to the recommendation of a strong apodization on the interferogram for the solar occultation experiment. The application of these concepts to the simultaneous retrieval of temperature and pressure from CO2 4.3-micron band stratospheric absorption spectra includes the analysis of the continuum absorptions by the pressure-induced N2 fundamental bands and by far wings of the CO2 v3 band. Agreement is reported between observed and simulated spectra.

Exact modeling of lineshape and wavenumber variations for off-axis detectors in Fourier transform spectrometers (FTS) sensor systems

The utilization of detector arrays in the focal planes of FTS sensor systems allows simultaneous spectral and spatial measurements. However, spectral lineshapes and wavenumber locations depend upon the size and location of the detector elements with respect to the Haidinger fringe pattern of the FTS sensor. These spectral distortions can be generalized as a shift and shape change of the FTS sensor lineshape. Depending on the distortions that can be tolerated, a degree of field-widening can be obtained for a given Haidinger fringe pattern. An exact model for predicting the FTS lineshape distortions is presented. The model is applied to several contemporary applications in order to quantify the magnitude of distortions to be expected.

Fourier transform spectrum of nu-5 and nu-8 bands of propyne

The nu-5 and nu-8 bands of propyne have been reinvestigated using a FTS spectrum between 900 and 1000/cm with a resolution of 0.005/cm. About 1500 lines have been assigned. Some perturbations are clearly evident. Molecular parameters of nu-5 = 1 and nu-8 = 1 levels were determined.

Absolute infrared band strength measurement of the ClO radical by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy

High-resolution (0.005/cm) FTIR spectra of the X2Pi(i)-X2Pi(i) (1-0) rovibrational bands of (C-35)(O-16) and (Cl-37)(O-16) were obtained in 1 torr of helium carrier gas. After measuring the strengths of approximately 830 individual IR lines from several spectra, a total band strength of 13.1 + or - 1.1/sq cm atm and a first Herman-Wallis coefficient of (4.12 + or - 0.62) x 10 to the -3rd were determined.

A diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopic study of adsorbed hydrazines

Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy of fuel hydrazines adsorbed on silica, silica-alumina and alimina surfaces indicates that the primary surface-hydrazine interaction is hydrogen bonding. Hydrazine, on adsorption to a deuterated silica surface, undergoes a rapid H/D exchange with deuterated surface silanol (Si-OD) groups. Adsorption equilibria are rapidly established at room temperature. Monomethylhydrazine and unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine are similarly adsorbed. On adsorption, the C-H stretching and methyl deformation modes of the methylhydrazines are shifted to higher frequencies by 10 to 20 cm(-1). These shifts are postulated to be due to changes in the lone-pair electro-density on the adjacent nitrogen atom and an electronegativity effect.
