Design of a Transport System for the PIP-II HB650 Cryomodule

The PIP-II Project at FNAL requires the assembly of 3 high-beta 650MHz cryomodules at STFC Daresbury (DL) in the UK. These modules must be safely transported from DL to FNAL in the USA. Previous experience with cryomodule transport was leveraged at both labs to design a transport system to protect the cryomodules during transit. Requirements for the system included mitigation of shocks, drops, and vibrations, and acting as a lifting fixture. It is comprised of a tessellated steel frame which encompasses the module with a wire rope isolator arrangement which the module mounts to. The frame was designed to withstand the weight of the 12.5 tonne cryomodule in various load cases. Details of shock and vibration profiles were obtained from MIL-STD-810H and were used to guide the sizing of the isolators. The frame and the isolation system were analysed via FEA using the shock and vibration profiles as an input. The transport system was found to be suitable for the given isolation, frame stiffness, and lifting code requirements. The frame has been fabricated and successfully load tested at FNAL. It will now be road tested with a dummy cryomodule before undergoing a trial run to DL.

Transportation Analysis of the Fermilab High-Beta 650 MHz Cryomodule

The prototype High-Beta 650 MHz cryomodule for the PIP-II project will be the first of its kind to be transported internationally, and the round trip from FNAL to STFC UKRI will use a combination of road and air transit. Transportation of an assembled cryomodule poses a significant technical challenge, as excitation can generate high stresses and cyclic loading. To accurately assess the behavior of the cryomodule, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to analyze all major components. First, all individual components were studied. For the critical/complex components, the analysis was in fine detail. Afterwards, all models were brought to a simplified state (necessary for computational expenses), verified to have the same behavior as their detailed counterparts, and combined to form larger sub-assemblies, with the ultimate analysis including the full cryomodule. We report the criteria for acceptance and methods of analysis, and results for selected components and sub-assemblies.

Prototype HB650 Cryomodule Heat Loads Simulations

During the design stages of the PIP-II cryomodules, many analytical calculations and FEA have been performed on simpler geometry in order to estimate the heat loads and also to optimize the design. To better analyze the cryomodule cold tests, simulations have been performed with MATLAB to determine the temperature of the main components during cool down and to determine the heat loads of the cryomodule. These simulations have been applied to the High Beta 650 MHz prototype cryomodule design and compared to the cold tests performed on it.
