Simulated Moving Bed Process for CO 2 Capture from Humid Postcombustion Flue Gases Using MUF-16

Simulated moving bed (SMB) designs are increasingly being adapted for the separation of multicomponent gaseous mixtures. In this work, we develop a modified SMB process for capturing CO 2 from humid postcombustion flue gas using MUF-16 (MUF = Massey University Framework). MUF-16 shows excellent selectivity for CO 2 over N 2 , moderate heats of adsorption for CO 2 and H 2 O, and no competitive sorption of CO 2 over water at relative humidities relevant to postcombustion capture. We utilize these characteristics to propose a continuous process that uses N 2 from the feed as the desorbent for the water, eliminating the need for a separate desiccant bed and allowing for localized heating during desorption for H 2 O-saturated MOF beds. Single-component isotherms, single-column breakthrough experiments, and SO 2 stability tests suggest the excellent suitability of MUF-16 to this separation via the proposed SMB design.

α-Quartz Phase Stabilization, Surface Texturing, and Tunable Optical Properties of Nanocrystalline GeO 2 Films Made by Pulsed-Laser Deposition: Implications for Optical and Optoelectronic Applications

Germanium oxide (GeO 2 ) has great potential in multifunctional devices and next-generation power electronics due to its high thermal conductivity and ambipolar doping capability. However, the complexity of synthesizing the desirable polymorph with a controlled phase, surface/interface quality, microstructure, and functional properties is the main barrier to GeO 2 utilization in advanced applications. Here, in this regard, we present a method to realize the hexagonal (h) or a-quartz type GeO 2 with nano-textured surface morphology on sapphire substrates using a hybrid synthesis strategy that comprises pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and post-deposition thermal annealing. We performed a comprehensive study to investigate the effect of annealing temperature, which was varied in a wide range (600-1100 °C), on the crystal structure, phase, surface morphology, chemical stoichiometry, defect states, and optical properties of PLD-grown GeO 2 films. As-deposited GeO 2 films at 500 °C were amorphous. Upon annealing, the GeO 2 films induced an amorphous-to-crystalline phase transformation; GeO 2 films annealed at higher annealing temperatures (≥900 °C) stabilized in the hexagonal phase and demonstrated excellent crystal quality and chemical stability. Thermally activated growth process showed increased average crystallite size, which was varied in the range of 20-130 (±2) nm, while the surface roughness followed a similar trend. The spectral transmittance and band gap also increased with increasing annealing temperature. The resulting h-GeO 2 films, particularly those obtained at annealing temperatures in the 900-1100 °C range, had a higher band gap of 6.2-6.3 eV and displayed excellent optical transmittance in the visible region. Moreover, the absence of extended valence band maxima and reduced optical defect density support the quality improvement upon annealing. When considering phase-pure bulk and nanostructured GeO 2 as a possible candidate for ultra wide band gap semiconductors in cutting-edge technological applications, the results of the current work can be beneficial to realize high structural and optical quality a-quartz structured GeO 2 films.

A Dual Approach in Direct Ink Writing of Thermally Cured Shape Memory Rubber Toughened Epoxy

Bisphenol A-based epoxies are much used in a wide range of composite and coating applications due to their excellent thermomechanical properties. However, their 3D printability remains a challenge with most reported materials suffering from high brittleness and low toughness. In this work, we have described especially modified epoxy resins that enable 3D printing with both fast and slow curing rates. These materials exhibit greatly enhanced toughness, tunable thermomechanical properties, and excellent shape memory behavior. Two different printing systems, including a two-part static mixing printhead and a single extrusion printhead, were developed for fast- and slow-curing epoxies, respectively. The rheology of inks in both systems has been modified into printable thixotropic fluids with the aid of silica nanoparticles and other additives. Epoxide-functionalized telechelic polybutadiene was added into the resins, which are then introduced inside the epoxy network after cross-linking. The addition of polybutadiene rubber significantly improves the toughness (over 135%), fracture strain (over 200%), and shape memory behavior. By adding different amounts of the rubber telechelic, thermomechanical properties, including modulus, elongation, and Tg of epoxy, can be well controlled in a wide range to satisfy different applications.

Copper-Based Two-Dimensional Conductive Metal–Organic Framework Thin Films for Ultrasensitive Detection of Perfluoroalkyls in Drinking Water

Perfluoroalkyls (PFAS) continue to emerge as a global health threat making their effective detection and capture extremely important. Though metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have stood out as a promising class of porous materials for sensing PFAS, detection limits remain insufficient and a fundamental understanding of detection mechanisms warrants further investigation. Here, in this study, we show the use of a 2D conductive MOF film based on copper hexahydroxy triphenylene (Cu-HHTP) to fabricate chemiresistive sensing devices for detecting PFAS in drinking water. We further show ultrasensitive detection using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Owing to excellent electrostatic attractions and electrochemical interactions between the copper-based MOF and PFAS, confirmed by high-resolution spectroscopy and theoretical simulations, the MOF-based sensor reported herein exhibits excellent affinity and sensitivity toward perfluorinated acids at concentrations as low as 0.002 ng/L.

Unveiling the Reactivity of Fluoropolymers with Sodium Metal: Mechanistic Insights and Battery Implications

Poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) has broad applications across various metal-ion battery systems, such as a binder for electrodes, a supporting matrix for electrolytes, and a separator material. Due to its excellent mechanical properties, PVDF-HFP has become an excellent candidate for fabricating gel and solid-state electrolytes in sodium-based batteries. However, in this study, we noticed notable side reactions occurring at the interface of PVDF-HFP membranes and Na metal. These reactions not only alter chemical compositions but also further affect the surface morphology and adhesive properties of membranes. Similar phenomena are observed in other polyfluoroalkyl-based membranes (PVDF and PTFE). Therefore, we systematically studied the reaction mechanisms between the Na metal and these polymers. The influence of different functional groups (−F, −CF 3 , −H) and their arrangement on the reaction extent has also been discussed. Finally, we concluded with the key factors driving these side reactions and provided new perspectives for designing polymers tailored for sodium-based batteries.

Inverse ZrO 2 /Cu as a highly efficient methanol synthesis catalyst from CO 2 hydrogenation

Enhancing the intrinsic activity and space time yield of Cu based heterogeneous methanol synthesis catalysts through CO 2 hydrogenation is one of the major topics in CO 2 conversion into value-added liquid fuels and chemicals. Here we report inverse ZrO 2 /Cu catalysts with a tunable Zr/Cu ratio have been prepared via an oxalate co-precipitation method, showing excellent performance for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol. Under optimal condition, the catalyst composed by 10% of ZrO 2 supported over 90% of Cu exhibits the highest mass-specific methanol formation rate of 524 g MeOH kg cat -1 h -1 at 220°C, 3.3 times higher than the activity of traditional Cu/ZrO 2 catalysts (159 g MeOH kg cat -1 h -1 ). In situ XRD-PDF, XAFS and AP-XPS structural studies reveal that the inverse ZrO 2 /Cu catalysts are composed of islands of partially reduced 1–2 nm amorphous ZrO 2 supported over metallic Cu particles. The ZrO 2 islands are highly active for the CO 2 activation. Meanwhile, an intermediate of formate adsorbed on the Cu at 1350 cm -1 is discovered by the in situ DRIFTS. This formate intermediate exhibits fast hydrogenation conversion to methoxy. The activation of CO 2 and hydrogenation of all the surface oxygenate intermediates are significantly accelerated over the inverse ZrO 2 /Cu configuration, accounting for the excellent methanol formation activity observed.

Integration of full divertor detachment with improved core confinement for tokamak fusion plasmas

Divertor detachment offers a promising solution to the challenge of plasma-wall interactions for steady-state operation of fusion reactors. Here, we demonstrate the excellent compatibility of actively controlled full divertor detachment with a high-performance (β N ~ 3, H 98 ~ 1.5) core plasma, using high-β p (poloidal beta, β p > 2) scenario characterized by a sustained core internal transport barrier (ITB) and a modest edge transport barrier (ETB) in DIII-D tokamak. The high-β p high-confinement scenario facilitates divertor detachment which, in turn, promotes the development of an even stronger ITB at large radius with a weaker ETB. This self-organized synergy between ITB and ETB, leads to a net gain in energy confinement, in contrast to the net confinement loss caused by divertor detachment in standard H-modes. These results show the potential of integrating excellent core plasma performance with an efficient divertor solution, an essential step towards steady-state operation of reactor-grade plasmas.

Learning local equivariant representations for large-scale atomistic dynamics

Abstract A simultaneously accurate and computationally efficient parametrization of the potential energy surface of molecules and materials is a long-standing goal in the natural sciences. While atom-centered message passing neural networks (MPNNs) have shown remarkable accuracy, their information propagation has limited the accessible length-scales. Local methods, conversely, scale to large simulations but have suffered from inferior accuracy. This work introduces Allegro, a strictly local equivariant deep neural network interatomic potential architecture that simultaneously exhibits excellent accuracy and scalability. Allegro represents a many-body potential using iterated tensor products of learned equivariant representations without atom-centered message passing. Allegro obtains improvements over state-of-the-art methods on QM9 and revMD17. A single tensor product layer outperforms existing deep MPNNs and transformers on QM9. Furthermore, Allegro displays remarkable generalization to out-of-distribution data. Molecular simulations using Allegro recover structural and kinetic properties of an amorphous electrolyte in excellent agreement with ab-initio simulations. Finally, we demonstrate parallelization with a simulation of 100 million atoms.

Ultrahigh-power-density flexible piezoelectric energy harvester based on freestanding ferroelectric oxide thin films

Flexible piezoelectric nanogenerators are emerging as a promising solution for powering next-generation flexible electronics by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. However, traditional ferroelectric ceramics, despite their excellent piezoelectric properties, lack flexibility; while piezoelectric polymers, although highly flexible, have low piezoelectricity. The quest to develop materials that combine high piezoelectricity with exceptional flexibility has thus become a research focus. Herein, we present a breakthrough in this field with the fabrication of freestanding (111)-oriented PbZr 0.52 Ti 0.48 O 3 single crystalline thin films, which exhibit remarkable flexibility and a high converse piezoelectric coefficient (~585 pm/V). This is achieved through water-soluble sacrificial layer to relieve substrate clamping and controlling the crystal orientation to further enhance the piezoelectric response. Our nanogenerators, constructed using these freestanding nanoscale membranes, demonstrate a record-high output power density (~63.5 mW/cm 3 ), excellent flexibility (with a strain tolerance >3.4%), and superior mechanical stability in cycling tests (>60,000 cycles). These advancements pave the way for high-performance, flexible electronic devices utilizing ferroelectric oxide thin films.

Superionic conducting vacancy-rich β-Li 3 N electrolyte for stable cycling of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries

The advancement of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries requires breakthroughs in solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) for the suppression of lithium dendrite growth at high current densities and high capacities (>3 mAh cm -2 ) and innovation of SSEs in terms of crystal structure, ionic conductivity and rigidness. Here we report a superionic conducting, highly lithium-compatible and air-stable vacancy-rich β-Li 3 N SSE. This vacancy-rich β-Li 3 N SSE shows a high ionic conductivity of 2.14 × 10 -3 S cm -1 at 25 °C and surpasses almost all the reported nitride-based SSEs. A Li- and N-vacancy-mediated fast lithium-ion migration mechanism is unravelled regarding vacancy-triggered reduced activation energy and increased mobile lithium-ion population. All-solid-state lithium symmetric cells using vacancy-rich β-Li 3 N achieve breakthroughs in high critical current densities up to 45 mA cm -2 and high capacities up to 7.5 mAh cm -2 , and ultra-stable lithium stripping and plating processes over 2,000 cycles. The high lithium compatibility mechanism of vacancy-rich β-Li 3 N is unveiled as intrinsic stability to lithium metal. In addition, β-Li 3 N possesses excellent air stability through the formation of protection surfaces. All-solid-state lithium metal batteries using the vacancy-rich β-Li 3 N as SSE interlayers and lithium cobalt oxide (LCO) and Ni-rich LiNi 0.83 Co 0.11 Mn 0.06 O 2 (NCM83) cathodes exhibit excellent battery performance. Extremely stable cycling performance is demonstrated with high capacity retentions of 82.05% with 95.2 mAh g -1 over 5,000 cycles at 1.0 C for LCO and 92.5% with 153.6 mAh g -1 over 3,500 cycles at 1.0 C for NCM83. Utilizing the vacancy-rich β-Li 3 N SSE and NCM83 cathodes, the all-solid-state lithium metal batteries successfully accomplished mild rapid charge and discharge rates up to 5.0 C, retaining 60.47% of the capacity. Notably, these batteries exhibited a high areal capacity, registering approximately 5.0 mAh cm -2 for the compact pellet-type cells and around 2.2 mAh cm -2 for the all-solid-state lithium metal pouch cells.

A new magnesium sheet alloy with high tensile properties and room-temperature formability

Lightweight sheet alloys with superior mechanical performance such as high strength, ductility and formability at room temperature (RT) are desirable for high volume automotive applications. However, ductility or formability of metallic alloys at RT are generally inversely related to strength, thereby making it difficult to optimize all three simultaneously. Here we design a new magnesium sheet alloy-ZAXME11100 (Mg-1.0Zn-1.0Al-0.5Ca-0.4Mn-0.2Ce, wt. pct.) via CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagram) modeling and experimental validation. This new sheet alloy offers an excellent RT formability with a high Index Erichsen (I.E.) value of 7.8 mm in a solution-treated condition (T4), due to its weak and split basal texture and fine grain structure. The new ZAXME 11100 alloy also shows a rapid age-hardening response during post-forming artificial aging treatment at 210 °C for 1hour (T6), resulting in a significant increase of yield strength from 159 MPa (T4) to 270 MPa (T6). The excellent combination of T4 ductility (31%), T4 formability (7.8 mm) and T6 yield strength (270 MPa) in this new magnesium alloy is comparable to that of common 6xxx series aluminum sheet alloys. Thus, this new magnesium sheet alloy is highly attractive for sheet applications in automotive and other industries.

Towards developing robust solid lubricant operable in multifarious environments

Abstract Conventional solid lubricants such as MoS 2 , graphite, or diamond-like carbon films demonstrate excellent tribological performance but only in specific environments due to their inherent materials properties. This limitation prohibits using these solid lubricants in environments that change dynamically. This study presents the results of a novel solid lubricant that was developed using a combination of solution-processed 2D-molybdenum disulfide and graphene-oxide (GO) that can be deposited on to stainless steel substrates using a simple spray-coating technique and show exceptional performance in multifarious environments namely, ambient (humid) atmosphere, dry nitrogen, and vacuum. The tribological performance of the coatings was evaluated using a ball-on-disc sliding test and demonstrated an excellent wear/friction performance in all environments and coating survived even after 44 km of linear sliding. Transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy analysis of the tribolayers suggested in-operando friction-induced re-orientation of MoS 2 layers that were protected by GO layers and, an absence of MoO x peaks indicate a strong resistance to intercalation with moisture and oxygen. The simplicity and robustness of the hybrid MoS 2 –GO solid lubricant in mitigating wear-friction behavior of steel-on-steel tribopair in a multifarious environment is a game-changing and is promising for various applications.

Chemical short-range order in derivative Cr–Ta–Ti–V–W high entropy alloys from the first-principles thermodynamic study

The development of high-entropy alloys (HEAs) focuses on exploring compositional regions in multi-component systems with all alloy elements in equal or near-equal atomic concentrations. Initially it was based on the main idea that high mixing configurational entropy contributions to the alloy free energy could promote the formation of a single solid solution phase. By using the ab-initio based Cluster Expansion (CE) Hamiltonian model constructed for the quinary bcc Cr–Ta–Ti–V–W system in combination with Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, we show that the phase stability and chemical short-range order (SRO) of the equiatomic quinary and five sub-quaternary systems, as well as their derivative alloys, can dramatically change the order–disorder transition temperatures (ODTT) as a function of alloy compositions. In particular, it has been found, that the equiatomic quaternary Ta–Ti–V–W and Cr–Ta–Ti–W alloys had the lowest order–disorder transition temperature (500 K) among all the analysed equiatomic compositions. In all investigated alloy systems, the strongest chemical ordering has been observed between Cr and V, which led to the conclusion that decreasing the concentration of either Cr or V might be beneficial in terms of decreasing the ODTT. It also predicts that increasing concentration of Ti significantly decreases the ODTT. Our analysis of chemical SRO as a function of alloy composition allows to understand the microstructure evolution of HEAs as a function of temperature in excellent agreement with available experimental observations. Importantly, our free energy of mixing and SRO calculations predict that the origin of precipitates formed by Cr- and V-rich in the sub-quaternary Cr–Ta–V–W system is driven by the thermodynamics. The modelling results are in an excellent agreement with experimental observation of Cr and V segregation in the W 0.38 Ta 0.36 Cr 0.15 V 0.11 alloy which in turns shows an exceptional radiation resistance.

Solvent selection for biphasic extraction of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural via multiscale modeling and experiments

We introduce a comprehensive conceptual framework for selecting solvents for reactive extraction in biphasic organic-water systems and demonstrate it for the separation of HMF (5-hydroxylmethylfurfural), a platform chemical produced in the acid-catalyzed dehydration of hexoses. We first perform in silico screening of ~2500 solvents, from the ADFCRS-2018 database using the ADF COSMO-RS implementation, and classification, based on the solvent partition coefficient. We then determine experimentally the partition coefficients for HMF, fructose, and products of HMF rehydration (levulinic acid (LA), and formic acid (FA)), the mutual water-organic solvent solubilities, and the separation factors in >50 select solvents spanning multiple homologous series at room temperature and a typical reaction temperature with in situ sampling. We find that COSMO-RS is excellent for screening purposes (typical error in most cases within a factor of ~2). Increased temperatures lead to significant reduction in partitioning, and room temperature measurements are clearly inadequate for solvent selection. Upon down selecting classes of solvents based on separation performance, we perform experimental thermal stability and reaction compatibility studies of a small set of solvents at relevant reactive-extraction temperatures. We discover that many substituted phenols exhibit an order-of-magnitude increase in partitioning compared to conventional solvents due chiefly to hydrogen bond interactions and show the necessary stability but retain a significant fraction of water and LA, factors that need to be considered in technoeconomic analysis. In contrast, anilines, aldehydes, and acids are good to excellent regarding separation but incompatible with this specific reaction medium. Furthermore, this multifaceted framework can be extended to other biomass-derived products and processes.

Mechanically robust and superior conductive n-type polymer binders for high-performance micro-silicon anodes in lithium-ion batteries

Compared with nanostructured silicon (Si), the Si microparticle (SiMP) has more commercial prospects due to its low cost. However, SiMPs suffer from unavoidable fracture during electrochemical cycling owing to their significant volume change. Here we develop a series of novel n-type conductive polymer binders (CPBs) for SiMP anodes in lithium-ion batteries owing to their superior properties. Extraordinary electrochemical performance of cells with such unique binders could be achieved, which is because these designed polymers contain electron-withdrawing oxadiazole ring groups and easily ionizable sulfonate polar groups, exhibiting excellent ionic conductivity, outstanding wettability to the electrolyte, and improved electronic conductivity after doping. Moreover, the coexistence of rigid and flexible chains enables them to have exceptional strength and ductility. Besides, a unique electrochromic approach has been utilized to investigate the energy gap of the CPBs in n-doping states. The ionic and electronic conductivities of prepared CPBs in an eigenstate and n-doping state have been systematically studied by the electrochemical method, filling the current research gap in this field. Due to the high conductivity of b-POD, the capacity of SiMPs (4200 mA h g –1 ) can be almost entirely released during the first cycle of discharge, while the SiMP anodes prepared with the PAALi or CMC binder show a much lower initial capacity. Here, the high conductivity of b-POD also endows it with better cycling performance than non-conductive binders especially at high current densities, demonstrating its excellent fast-charging ability. More essentially, this work provides polymer binders without any intricate structural designs to obtain high-performance SiMP batteries, significantly enhancing their practical applications.

An efficient and durable anode for ammonia protonic ceramic fuel cells

Ammonia protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) have the potential to be a highly efficient power source with high energy density. However, the inadequate catalytic activity of the existing anodes for utilization of ammonia greatly limits the performance of PCFCs. In this study, we report an Fe-modified state-of-the-art Ni cermet anode with greatly enhanced activity and durability toward utilization of ammonia. Cells with an Fe-decorated Ni-BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3 (Ni–BZCYYb) anode demonstrate an excellent performance, achieving peak power densities of 0.360, 0.723, 1.257, and 1.609 W cm –2 at 550, 600, 650, and 700 °C, respectively, which reveal the highest performance of solid oxide fuel cells fueled on ammonia. In addition, the cells show an excellent durability when operated at a constant current density of 0.5 A cm –2 (or a power density of ~0.435 W cm –2 ) at 650 °C. The superior activity and durability of the Fe-modified Ni/BZCYYb anode are attributed to the alternation of NH 3 adsorption strength and N 2 desorption barrier heights, as confirmed by first-principles based mechanistic and microkinetic modeling. Our research provides a valuable guidance for the development of efficient electro-catalysts for ammonia PCFCs.

Triphenylamine/benzothiadiazole-based compounds for non-doped orange and red fluorescent OLEDs with high efficiencies and low efficiency roll-off

Long-wavelength materials are key for development of pure-color and white organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs). An organic molecule, combining hybridized local electron and charge-transfer (HLCT) states and aggregation-induced emission (AIE), not only breaks the 5% external quantum efficiency (EQE) limit but also overcomes emission quenching. Herein, we designed and synthesized four novel donor–acceptor compounds of TBAN, TBT, TBAT, and TABAT using triphenylamine (TPA) as the donor, benzothiadiazole (BT) as the acceptor, and anthracene (AN) as a bridge. We found that the emission peaks of TBAN, TBT, TBAT and TABAT are located at 596, 615, 580 and 546 nm, respectively. We successfully applied them to non-doped OLEDs, and the resulting devices exhibited excellent performance. For example, the optimal TBAN-based OLEDs showed a maximum luminance of 74 820 cd m –2 , a current efficiency of 12.1 cd A –1 and a maximum EQE of 5.7% with low roll-off. Additionally, the device with TBAN as both the emitter and hole-transport material also exhibited high efficiency that is comparable to that of an NPB-based device. Furthermore, this work demonstrates that it is feasible to obtain excellent orange and red emitters by employing BT- and TPA-based D–A architectures.
