Shields-1 Dosimetry Measurements in Polar Low Earth Orbit

Shields-1, NORAD ID 43850, has been operating in polar low earth orbit since December 2018 at 85 degrees inclination and an initial altitude of 500 kilometers, beginning in solar minimum activity. It launched with the NASA CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI) ELaNaXIX mission. Shields-1 has 8 Teledyne dosimeters on board behind different shielding thicknesses. It is a technology demonstration of an atomic number (Z)-grade shielded electronics enclosure, 3 Z-grade shielding samples baselined with 4 aluminum samples having dosimeters behind each sample and inside the electronics enclosure. In addition to the technology demonstration, Shields-1 has been providing scientific dosimetry of energetic particles in the polar low earth orbit space radiation environment.

Passive PCB Mounted Thermal Switch

A printed circuit board (PCB) generates heat during operation. In a vacuum this heat can only be rejected by conduction and radiation. In order to reject heat effectively the PCB needs to be thermally conductive to the electronics enclosure. However, when the enclosure temperature gets too low, too much heat is rejected from the PCB and it can fail. This thermal switch has been designed to allow for heat rejection when the PCB is sufficiently warm but then greatly reduce heat rejection when the temperature gets low enough.

Sidelobe Modeling and Mitigation for A Three Mirror Anastigmat Cosmic Microwave Background Telescope

Telescopes measuring cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization on large angular scales require exquisite control of systematic errors to ensure the fidelity of the cosmological results. In particular, far-sidelobe contamination from wide angle scattering is a potentially prominent source of systematic error for large aperture microwave telescopes. Here we describe and demonstrate a ray-tracing-based modeling technique to predict far sidelobes for a three mirror anastigmat telescope designed to observe the CMB from the South Pole. Those sidelobes are produced by light scattered in the receiver optics subsequently interacting with the walls of the surrounding telescope enclosure. After comparing simulated sidelobe maps and angular power spectra for different enclosure wall treatments, we propose a highly scattering surface that would provide more than an order of magnitude reduction in the degree-scale far-sidelobe contrast compared to a typical reflective surface. We conclude by discussing the fabrication of a prototype scattering wall panel and presenting measurements of its angular scattering profile.

Shields-1 Energetic Proton Dose Comparison from Solar Minimum and Active Periods

Shields-1 has been operating in polar low earth orbit since December 2018 as part of the CubeSat Launch Initiative (CSLI) Educational Launch of Nanosatellites (ELaNa)XIX Mission. Shields-1 has 8 Teledyne µdosimeters behind shielding. These shielded µdosimeters have high minimum proton energy thresholds. The Shields-1 electronics enclosure µdosimeter has a minimum proton threshold energy of 151 MeV. The annualized total ionizing dose (TID) in the electronics enclosure was 75.6 +/- 3.2 RAD from July-August 2019, which was a solar minimum period. In contrast, the annualized TID was 61.0 +/- 2.5 RAD in July 2023, a solar active month. The TID change can be attributed to both the reduction in radiation at the South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) and the decrease in galactic cosmic radiation during increasing solar activity. The measured GCR dose over the poles was reduced during the July 2023 solar active period in comparison with the July 2019 solar minimum period, using the most sensitive µdosimeter channel for the measurement. Shields-1 has demonstrated the capability of measuring the changes in high energy protons in polar low earth orbit during changes in solar activity, which contributes to the understanding of Earth in the heliosphere.

Nickel-cadmium cells for the spacecraft battery

The storage battery for the Telstar satellite must undergo frequent charge-discharge cycles; in addition, it is subject to overcharge during a substantial portion of its life. Nickel-cadmium cells were chosen as best capable of satisfactory long-time operation under these conditions. A design and selection program was undertaken to ensure that Ni-Cd cores would meet objectives imposed by battery service conditions, and the cell enclosure was designed to minimize electrolyte leakage. Selection, qualification, and life tests indicated that a storage battery using the cell design would perform satisfactorily. To date, the only failures occurring during continuing life tests have been among cells subjected to 100 per cent discharge daily; this operation is far in excess of the expected duty cycle of satellite cells.

Seismic transducer measures small horizontal displacements

Pendular seismic transducer mounted on base plate measures small horizontal displacements of structures subjected to vibration where no fixed reference point is available. Enclosure of transducer in transparent plastic case prevents air currents from disturbing the pendulum balance.

Test monkeys anesthetized by routine procedure

Test monkeys are safely anesthetized for five minutes by confining them for less than six minutes in enclosures containing a controlled volume of ether. Thus the monkeys can be properly and safely positioned on test couches and fitted with electrodes or other devices prior to physiological tests.

Split glass tube assures quality in electron beam brazing

Sealed enclosure of heat-resistant glass tubing and silicone rubber molds provide good visibility for electron beam brazing of metal tubes in an inert gas atmosphere. The glass tubing and rubber molds, which are bonded together, are easily applied to and removed from the brazing area by operation of a clamp.

Portable sandblaster cleans small areas

Portable sandblasting unit rapidly and effectively cleans localized areas on a metal surface. The unit incorporates a bellows enclosure, masking plate, sand container, and used sand accummulator connected to a vacuum system. The bellows is equipped with an inspection window and light for observation of the sanding operation.

Impact and puncture resistant material protects parts from damage

Uniform sized, laminated panels protect delicate parts and equipment from damage during storage and transportation. The panels consist of sheets of steel foil bonded between sheets of elastic foam. They are lightweight, impact and puncture-resistant, and, when formed into an enclosure, provide a barrier against moisture and thermal shock.

Prediction of radiation damage effects in transistors

Quantative relationships between radiation dosage to transistors and resultant damage are established. Calculation of these dose levels is based on high energy particle population data and analysis of the shielding effect provided by the enclosures surrounding a given transistor.
