Control of XeF laser output by pulse injection

Injection locking is investigated as a means for control of optical pulse duration and polarization in a XeF laser. Intense short-pulse generation in the ultraviolet is achieved by injection of a low-level 1-ns optical pulse into a XeF oscillator. Control of laser output polarization by injection locking is demonstrated and studied as a function of injected signal level. Enhancement of XeF electric-discharge laser efficiency by injection pulse 'priming' is observed.

A model of Martian surface chemistry

Alkaline earth and alkali metal superoxides and peroxides, gamma-Fe2O3 and carbon suboxide polymer, are proposed to be constituents of the Martian surface material. These reactive substances explain the water modified reactions and thermal behaviors of the Martian samples demonstrated by all of the Viking Biology Experiments. It is also proposed that the syntheses of these substances result mainly from electrical discharges between wind-mobilized particles at Martian pressures; plasmas are initiated and maintained by these discharges. Active species in the plasma either combine to form or react with inorganic surfaces to create the reactive constituents.

'GAIM' - Gas-addition, impedance-matched arc driver

A conceptual view for a GAIM energy/driver system to maximize shock-tube performance through efficient interfacing of the energy source with the gas dynamics of the arc driver is presented. Electrical and arc-chamber requirements are evaluated utilizing two new computer codes. One code calculates the shock wave generated for a selected time rate and magnitude of arc-energy input; the other computes the values of external circuit elements required to produce the selected energy input, with the driver represented as the load element of the electrical discharge circuit. Results indicate that the energy-storage capability and the driver arrangement needed to produce the highest shock Mach number can be achieved by means of driver gas addition and by impedance matching (GAIM). Design criteria are presented for arc energy requirements necessary to produce given shock-wave speeds. Shock velocities as high as the 70 km/sec required for simulating Jovian entry now seem possible in shock-tube operation. Practical implementation of a GAIM system is discussed.

Saturn - Tropospheric ammonia and nitrogen

Photochemical calculations based on recent data on the Saturn temperature structure and Lyman-alpha albedo indicate that detectable amounts of gaseous ammonia may exist between 20 and 35 km above the cloud tops. An instrument that might be able to observe this gas is the spectrometer on board the International Ultraviolet Explorer satellite. The calculations also yield a maximum nitrogen mixing ratio at the cloud tops between 1.8 x 10 to the -10th to 6 x 10 to the -8th by volume, depending upon the degree of supersaturation of ammonia and hydrazine. Even the lower limit could produce intense emissions if electrical discharges such as those observed on Jupiter by Voyager are also present on Saturn, or if high energy particles penetrate to the Saturnian troposphere.

Laser-SPS systems analysis and environmental impact assessment

The systems feasibility and environmental impact of replacing the microwave transmitters on the Satellite Power System with laser transmitters are examined. The lasers suggested are two molecular-gas electric-discharge lasers (EDL's), namely the CO and CO2 lasers. Calculations are made on system efficiency, atmospheric transmission efficiency, and laser beam spreading. It is found that the present satellite concept using lasers is far too inefficient and massive to be economically viable. However, the safety issues associated with laser power transmission appear tractable, and no effects could be identified which present a real danger of serious injury to the environment, although certain phenomena deserve closer scrutiny.

Direct nuclear excitation of a He-3 - CO2 gas mixture

Probe measurements using a continuous wave CO2 laser have been carried out on a He-3 - CO2 gas mixture directly excited by the He-3(n,p)H-3 reaction. At a gas pressure of 1 atm and thermal neutron flux up to 10 to the 17th n/sq cm sec, total extinction of the probe beam was observed. Addition of N2 to the gas mixture (up to 20%) produced a media such as is used in electric discharge CO2 lasers. However, this mixture produced the same results as the He-3 - CO2 mixture. Absorption of the laser beam indicates that with direct nuclear excitation, it is the lower laser level which is excited. Therefore direct nuclear pumping of a CO2 laser does not appear feasible.

Amino acids of the Murchison meteorite. I - Six carbon acyclic primary alpha-amino alkanoic acids

Six of the seven chain isomers of six-carbon acyclic primary alpha-amino alkanoic acids (leucine isomers) have been either identified or confirmed in hot-water extracts of the Murchison meteorite using combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and ion exchange chromatography. 2-Amino-2-ethylbutyric acid, 2-amino-2,3-dimethylbutyric acid, pseudoleucine, and 2-methylnorvaline were positively identified by GC-MS. These amino acids have not been previously reported to occur in natural materials and may be uniquely meteoritic in origin. The presence of leucine and isoleucine (including the diastereoisomer, alloisoleucine) was confirmed. Peaks corresponding to norleucine were seen by ion-exchange and gas chromatography but characteristic mass spectra were not obtained. The alpha-branched chain isomers in this series are quantitatively the most significant. These results are compared with literature data on amino acid synthesis by electrical discharge and Fischer-Tropsch-type catalysis. Neither model system produces an amino acid suite that is completely comparable to that found in the Murchison meteorite.

"Sandwich" Stiffener for Composite Structural Panels

Concept uses commercial titanium honeycomb core brazed to cap material and panel skin. In fabrication of stringers, large sheets of cap material are brazed to pieces of honeycomb core of desired height. After brazing, individual stringers are cut by electrical-discharge machining, and stringers are subsequently brazed to skin. Sandwich beam stringer is light-weight, structurally-efficient, low-cost stiffener for metal-matrix composite structural panels.

Preliminary comparison of material charging properties using single-energy and multienergy electron beams

Results of tests designed to compare the charging properties of spacecraft material under a monoenergetic beam and under a continuously distributed beam are summarized. In the test setup the electron source was mounted in the top of a cylindrical vacuum chamber. A sheet of 5-mil-thick Kapton was placed on an insulated metal substrate at the bottom of the vacuum chamber. The dc current arriving on the substrate was measured and a field meter measured the potential of the test sample. A retarding potential analyzer measured the energy spectrum of the incident electron beam. With the monoenergetic beam, the sample charged to 12 kV and electrical discharges occurred. With the multi-energy spectra the samples charged to only 6 kV and 4 kV, and no discharger were observed. In these experiments, no effort was made to duplicate the spectra occurring in space. The tests were intended to simply to compare spacecraft material charging properties using monoenergetic and continuous multi-energy beams.

Investigation of possibilities for solar-powered high-energy lasers in space

Solar pumped lasers were investigated. The literature was reviewed for possible solar laser candidates from optical pumping experiments. A baseline CO electric discharge laser system was shown to be technically feasible. The most promising direct solar pumped laser was identified to be CF3I. Using the 'STAG' solar laser concept and CF3I, it was found that such a system could be weight competitive with the baseline CO laser system.

Pulse switching for high energy lasers

A saturable inductor switch for compressing the width and sharpening the rise time of high voltage pulses from a relatively slow rise time, high voltage generator to an electric discharge gas laser (EDGL) also provides a capability for efficient energy transfer from a high impedance primary source to an intermediate low impedance laser discharge network. The switch is positioned with respect to a capacitive storage device, such as a coaxial cable, so that when a charge build-up in the storage device reaches a predetermined level, saturation of the switch inductor releases or switches energy stored in the capactive storage device to the EDGL. Cascaded saturable inductor switches for providing output pulses having rise times of less than ten nanoseconds and a technique for magnetically biasing the saturable inductor switch are disclosed.

Rates of fixation by lightning of carbon and nitrogen in possible primitive atmospheres

A thermochemical-hydrodynamic model of the production of trace species by electrical discharges has been used to estimate the rates of fixation of C and N by lightning in the primitive atmosphere. Calculations for various possible mixtures of CH4, CO2, CO, N2, H2, and H2O reveal that the prime species produced were probably HCN and NO and that the key parameter determining the rates of fixation was the ratio of C atoms to O atoms in the atmosphere. Atmospheres with C more abundant than O have large HCN fixation rates, in excess of 10 to the 17th molecules/J, but small NO yields. However, when O is more abundant than C, the NO fixation rate approaches 10 to the 17th molecules/J while the HCN yield is small. The implications for the evolution of life are discussed.

Lightning detection and ranging

A lightning detector and ranging (LDAR) system developed at the Kennedy Space Center and recently transferred to Wallops Island is described. The system detects pulsed VHF signals due to electrical discharges occurring in a thunderstorm by means of 56-75 MHz receivers located at the hub and at the tips of 8 km radial lines. Incoming signals are transmitted by wideband links to a central computing facility which processes the times of arrival, using two independent calculations to determine position in order to guard against false data. The results are plotted on a CRT display, and an example of a thunderstorm lightning strike detection near Kennedy Space Center is outlined. The LDAR correctly identified potential ground strike zones and additionally provided a high correlation between updrafts and ground strikes.
