Prototype solar heating and hot water systems

Alternative approaches to solar heating and hot water system configurations were studied, parametrizing the number and location of the dampers, the number and location of the fans, the interface locations with the furnace, the size and type of subsystems, and operating modes. A two-pass air-heating collector was selected based on efficiency and ease of installation. Also, an energy transport module was designed to compactly contain all the mechanical and electrical control components. System performance calculations were carried out over a heating season for the tentative site location at Tunkhnana, Pa. Results illustrate the effect of collector size, storage capacity, and use of a reflector. Factors which affected system performance include site location, insulative quality of the house, and of the system components. A preliminary system performance specification is given.

Nonlocal plasma turbulence associated with interplanetary shocks

Regions of plasma turbulence extending several tenths of an astronomical unit upstream or downstream of interplanetary shocks have been detected by the plasma wave instrument on ISEE 3. Highly impulsive electric field bursts at 1-10 kHz were found (hours upstream of quasi-parallel interplanetary shocks) whose average and peak amplitudes occasionally increased until the shock crossing, when they were suppressed. A 0.1-1 kHz electric field component was enhanced at nearly all shocks, and persisted downstream. A smooth, high-frequency continuum near and above the local electron plasma frequency was enhanced at, and persisted downstream of, every interplanetary shock studied. While no single interplanetary shock showed every effect, the ensemble of shocks contained at least one example of each type of plasma wave found upstream of the earth's bow shock.

A fundamental magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling mode involving field-aligned currents as deduced from DE-2 observations

From the magnetic and electric field observations on the DE-2 satellite it is deduced that the perturbation magnetic field and the electric field in the field-aligned current regions are, as a rule, orthogonal to each other and are highly correlated. This deduction is equivalent to the statement that the Poynting vector calculated from these magnetic and electric field components is equal to the ionospheric energy dissipation and that the height-integrated Hall current is divergence free. The state described is interpreted as a frequently prevailing mode of the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling involving field-aligned currents.

Spectral broadening of VLF transmitter signals observed on DE 1 - A quasi-electrostatic phenomenon?

Spectrally broadened VLF transmitter signals are observed on the DE 1 satellite using alternatively both electric and magnetic field sensors. It is found that at times when the electric field component undergoes significant bandwidth expansion (up to about 110 Hz) the magnetic field component has a bandwidth of less than 10 Hz. The results support the theory that the off-carrier components are quasi-electrostatic in nature. Measurement of the absolute E and B field magnitudes of the broadened signals are used to determine the wave Poynting vector. It is found that the observed power levels can be understood without invoking any strong amplification process that operates in conjunction with the spectral broadening. The implications of this finding in distinguishing among the various possible mechanisms for spectral broadening are discussed.

Apparatus for adapting an end effector device remotely controlled manipulator arm

Apparatus for adapting a general purpose and effector device to a special purpose and effector is disclosed which includes an adapter bracket assembly which provides a mechanical and electrical interface between the end effector devices. The adapter bracket assembly includes an adapter connector post which interlocks with a diamond shaped gripping channel formed in closed jaws of the general purpose end effector. The angularly intersecting surfaces of the connector post and gripping channel prevent any relative movement there between. Containment webs constrain the outer finger plates of the general purpose jaws to prevent pitch motion. Electrical interface is provided by conical, self aligning electrical connector components carried by respective ones of said end effectors.

Laboratory observations of ion cyclotron waves associated with a double layer in an inhomogeneous magnetic field

Observations of coherent electrostatic ion cyclotron (EIC) waves associated with a strong, magnetized double layer are presented. The double layers are produced in a weakly ionized argon plasma by applying a positive potential to an electrode plate located in the diverging magnetic field region of a cylindrical plasma column. Ionization within the electrode sheath is essential to the formation of these double layers. The resulting V-shaped potential structures have extended parallel, oblique and perpendicular (to B) electric field components. The frequency of the ion cyclotron instability is dependent upon the magnetic field strength at the position of the parallel potential structure. The properties of EIC waves in the presence of the double layer are discussed in relation to the possible excitation mechanisms (field-aligned currents, ion and electron beams, and perpendicular E fields).

The influence of scattering particles morphology on the characteristics of lidar signals

The characteristics of light scattering by a separate spherical particle are used as a priori information when interpreting the data on laser sounding of atmospheric aerosols. Analogously, it is necessary to have a priori information on the characteristics of light scattering by a single crystals in order to restitute the microstructure of crystal formation in the atmosphere. In contrast to the aerosol particles the crystals are of different shapes. On the one hand, this complicates the solution of electrodynamic problems on light scattering by such crystals. On the other hand, if obtaining such a solution is possible, one can determine the morphology of scattering particles accoring to the sounding data and this enables additonal information to be obtained on such meteorological parameters as temperature, pressure, and humidity. Using the geometric-wave approach the problem of scattering of plane electromagnetic wave on convex polyhedrons of arbitrary form was solved. As a result, the expressions were obtained for electric field components of perpendicular and parallel polarizations scattered in any given direction.

Electrostatic instabilities of velocity-space-shell distributions in magnetized plasmas

Electron instabilities of magnetized spherical shell distributions in velocity space with a colder Maxwellian background are investigated analytically with simulations using electrostatic particle codes. The resonant and nonresonant instabilities observed in the particle simulations are in agreement with zeros of the dielectric function, as found from the resonant approximations for waves with an electric field component along the magnetic field or by computation with a root solver code in the case of perpendicular propagation. Saturation of the instabilities is by nonlinear cyclotron resonance with the cold background in the resonant case or by nonstochastic cyclotron harmonic damping by the cold background in the nonresonant case. Instabilities invariably lead to perpendicular acceleration and heating of the cold background to velocities sometimes exceeding the shell velocity.

High-frequency waves generated by auroral electrons

Measurements of marginally unstable electron distribution functions and high-frequency plasma waves were made on a sounding rocket flight through a quiet auroral arc. The waves appeared near the electron plasma frequency and had a large parallel electric field component such that k-parallel is greater than k-perpendicular. The appearance of these waves was correlated with the presence of marginally unstable parallel electron distributions. Analysis has shown that the waves were produced by parallel electron distribution function greater than 0 rather than the small perpendicular electron distribution function greater than 0 features. Wave levels and growth rates inside the arc were small, and nonlinear wave-wave and wave-particle interactions appear to have been minimal.

Enhanced beam coupling modulation using the polarization properties of photorefractive GaAs

Observation is reported of a rotation in the polarization of the two photorefractive recording beams in GaAs for a configuration with the internally generated space-charge field along the line 110 crystallographic orientation. This rotation is a result of simultaneous constructive and destructive beam coupling in each beam for the optical electric field components along the two electrooptically induced principal dielectric axes of the crystal. By turning one of the beams on and off, the intensity of the other beam after the crystal and a polarization analyzer can be modulated by as much as 500 percent. This result is of particular importance for optical information processing applications.

The 25 kWe solar thermal Stirling hydraulic engine system: Conceptual design

The conceptual design and analysis of a solar thermal free-piston Stirling hydraulic engine system designed to deliver 25 kWe when coupled to a 11 meter test bed concentrator is documented. A manufacturing cost assessment for 10,000 units per year was made. The design meets all program objectives including a 60,000 hr design life, dynamic balancing, fully automated control, more than 33.3 percent overall system efficiency, properly conditioned power, maximum utilization of annualized insolation, and projected production costs. The system incorporates a simple, rugged, reliable pool boiler reflux heat pipe to transfer heat from the solar receiver to the Stirling engine. The free-piston engine produces high pressure hydraulic flow which powers a commercial hydraulic motor that, in turn, drives a commercial rotary induction generator. The Stirling hydraulic engine uses hermetic bellows seals to separate helium working gas from hydraulic fluid which provides hydrodynamic lubrication to all moving parts. Maximum utilization of highly refined, field proven commercial components for electric power generation minimizes development cost and risk.

Parallel electric fields in a simulation of magnetotail reconnection and plasmoid evolution

Properties of the electric field component parallel to the magnetic field (E sub parallel) in a three-dimensional MHD simulation of plasmoid formation and evolution in the magnetotail in the presence of a net dawn-dusk magnetic field component were observed. Particularly emphasized was the spatial location of E(sub parallel), the concept of a diffusion zone and the role of E(sub parallel) in accelerating electrons. A localization of the region of enhanced E(sub parallel) in all space directions with a strong concentration in the z direction was found. This region was identified as the diffusion zone, which plays a crucial role in reconnection theory through the local break-down of magnetic flux conservation. The presence of B(sub y) implies a north-south asymmetry of the injection of accelerated particles into the near-earth region, if the net B(sub y) field is strong enough to force particles to follow field lines through the diffusion region. It is estimated that for a typical net B(sub y) field this should affect the injection of electrons into the near-earth dawn region, so that precipitation into the Northern (Southern) Hemisphere should dominate for duskward (dawnward) net B(sub y). In addition, a spatial clottiness of the expected injection of adiabatic particles which could be related to the appearance bright spots in auroras was observed.

Radio sky mapping from satellites at very low frequencies

Wave Distribution Function (WDF) analysis is a procedure for making sky maps of the sources of natural electromagnetic waves in space plasmas, given local measurements of some or all of the three magnetic and three electric field components. The work that still needs to be done on this subject includes solving basic methodological problems, translating the solution into efficient algorithms, and embodying the algorithms in computer software. One important scientific use of WDF analysis is to identify the mode of origin of plasmaspheric hiss. Some of the data from the Japanese satellite Akebono (EXOS D) are likely to be suitable for this purpose.

Transient particle acceleration in strongly magnetized neutron stars. II - Effects due to a dipole field geometry

Sheared Alfven waves generated by nonradial crustal disturbances above the polar cap of a strongly magnetized neutron star induce an electric field component parallel to B. An attempt is made to determine the manner in which the strong radial dependence of B affects the propagation of these sheared Alfven waves, and whether this MHD process is still an effective particle accelerator. It is found that although the general field equation is quite complicated, a simple wavelike solution can still be obtained under the conditions of interest for which the Alfven phase velocity decouples from the wave equation. The results may be applicable to gamma-ray burst sources.

This region is identified as the diffusion zone, which plays a crucial role in reconnection theory through the local break-down of magnetic flux conservation.

The interaction of high voltage systems with the environments of the moon and Mars

An evaluation is made of the consequences of the interaction of high-voltage spacecraft systems designed for use in orbit or on the lunar and Martian surfaces with such environmental components as electrically charged dust, low pressure atmospheres, ionospheric plasmas and neutral gas species, and chemically reactive species. An account is given of plausible means for obtaining the requisite data and developing priorities for the study of each of the identified interactions. Attention is given to the computational tools whose development is required for the simulation and quantification of risk factors for the various likely interactions.
