High-Performance Polyimide Powder Coatings

Much of the infrastructure at Kennedy Space Center and other NASA sites has been subjected to outside weathering effects for more than 40 years. Because much of this infrastructure has metallic surfaces, considerable effort is continually devoted to developing methods to minimize the effects of corrosion on these surfaces. These efforts are especially intense at KSC, where offshore salt spray and exhaust from Solid Rocket Boosters accelerate corrosion. Coatings of various types have traditionally been the choice for minimizing corrosion, and improved corrosion control methods are constantly being researched. Recent work at KSC on developing an improved method for repairing Kapton (polyimide)-based electrical wire insulation has identified polyimides with much lower melting points than traditional polyimides used for insulation. These lower melting points and the many other outstanding physical properties of polyimides (thermal stability, chemical resistance, and electrical properties) led us to investigate whether they could be used in powder coatings.

Effect Of Low External Flow On Flame Spreading Over ETFE Insulated Wire Under Microgravity

Fire safety is one of the most important issues for manned space missions. A likely cause of fires in spacecraft is wire insulation combustion in electrical system. Regarding the wire insulation combustion it important to know the effect of low external flow on the combustion because of the presence of ventilation flow in spacecraft. Although, there are many researches on flame spreading over solid material at low external flows under microgravity, research dealing with wire insulation is very limited. An example of wire insulation combustion in microgravity is the Space Shuttle experiments carried out by Greenberg et al. However, the number of experiments was very limited. Therefore, the effect of low flow velocity is still not clear. The authors have reported results on flame spreading over ETFE (ethylene - tetrafluoroetylene) insulated wire in a quiescent atmosphere in microgravity by 10 seconds drop tower. The authors also performed experiments of polyethylene insulated nichrom wire combustion in low flow velocity under microgravity. The results suggested that flame spread rate had maximum value in low flow velocity condition. Another interesting issue is the effect of dilution gas, especially CO2, which is used for fire extinguisher in ISS. There are some researches working on dilution gas effect on flame spreading over solid material in quiescent atmosphere in microgravity. However the research with low external flow is limited and, of course, the research discussing a relation of the appearance of maximum wire flammability in low flow velocity region with different dilution gas cannot be found yet. The present paper, therefore, investigates the effect of opposed flow with different dilution gas on flame spreading over ETFE insulated wire and change in the presence of the maximum flammability depending on the dilution gas type is discussed within the limit of microgravity time given by ground-based facility.

Alaska Pipeline Insulation

Crude oil moving through the 800-mile Trans-Alaska Pipeline must be kept at a relatively high temperature, about 180 degrees Fahrenheit, to maintain the fluidity of the oil. In Arctic weather, that demands highly effective insulation. General Electric Co.'s Space Division, Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, provided it with a spinoff product called Therm-O-Trol. Shown being installed on the pipeline, Therm-O-Trol is a metal-bonded polyurethane foam especially formulated for Arctic insulation. A second GE spinoff product, Therm-O-Case, solved a related problem involved in bringing hot crude oil from 2,000-foot-deep wells to the surface without transferring oil heat to the surrounding permafrost soil; heat transfer could melt the frozen terrain and cause dislocations that might destroy expensive well casings. Therm-O-Case is a double-walled oil well casing with multi-layered insulation which provides an effective barrier to heat transfer. Therm-O-Trol and Therm-O-Case are members of a family of insulating products which stemmed from technology developed by GE Space Division in heat transferlthermal control work on Gemini, Apollo and other NASA programs.

An electromagnetic Thirring problem.

A neutral rotating mass shell surrounds a concentric stationary electrically charged insulating shell. The dipole-like magnetic field induced by (and proportional to) the rotation of the neutral shell is calculated on the basis of the coupled linearized Einstein-Maxwell field equations of general relativity. This field is apparently at variance with a conjecture made on Machian grounds, for which a possible explanation is suggested. The corresponding induced quadrupolar electric field is calculated for the region within the charged shell, and the potential is given for this field everywhere. Though understandable on mutually inconsistent elementary grounds, we regard this field as a useful example of a solution of linearized general relativity.-

Engineered Interfaces in Extruded Polyphenylsulfone-Boron Nitride Composite Insulation

Improving matrix-filler interactions is critical for optimizing dielectric performance in composite insulation; however, the technique used to introduce inorganic fillers into an organic matrix varies in its ability to satisfactorily reduce the size of cavities and interfaces. This study reports effects from changing the filler incorporation strategy on the rheology, dielectric performance and thermal conductivity of extruded polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) – hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) composite insulation. Depending on the technique used to introduce BN into the host matrix, the viscosity, torque, and melt viscosity temperature of the polymer were reduced, enabling better mixing, heat transfer, and smaller voids. This corresponded to an increase in dielectric strength compared to other formulations at either a similar or lower filler loading. On the other hand, the thermal conductivity in these specimens shifted further away from the thermal conductivity target of 1 W/m·K, which was an indication of a larger separation distance between the particles in samples with smaller interfaces. A trade-off between dielectric strength and thermal conductivity may exist when maximizing thermal conduction without sacrificing dielectric strength.

Study of advanced fuel system concepts for commercial aircraft and engines

The impact on a commercial transport aircraft of using fuels which have relaxed property limits relative to current commercial jet fuel was assessed. The methodology of the study is outlined, fuel properties are discussed, and the effect of the relaxation of fuel properties analyzed. Advanced fuel system component designs that permit the satisfactory use of fuel with the candidate relaxed properties in the subject aircraft are described. The two fuel properties considered in detail are freezing point and thermal stability. Three candidate fuel system concepts were selected and evaluated in terms of performance, cost, weight, safety, and maintainability. A fuel system that incorporates insulation and electrical heating elements on fuel tank lower surfaces was found to be most cost effective for the long term.

A programmable heater control circuit for spacecraft

Spacecraft thermal control is accomplished for many components through use of multilayer insulation systems, electrical heaters, and radiator systems. The heaters are commanded to maintain component temperatures within design specifications. The programmable heater control circuit (PHCC) was designed to obtain an effective and efficient means of spacecraft thermal control. The hybrid circuit provides use of control instrumentation as temperature data, available to the spacecraft central data system, reprogramming capability of the local microprocessor during the spacecraft's mission, and the elimination of significant spacecraft wiring. The hybrid integrated circuit has a temperature sensing and conditioning circuit, a microprocessor, and a heater power and control circuit. The device is miniature and housed in a volume which allows physical integration with the component to be controlled. Applications might include alternate battery-powered logic-circuit configurations. A prototype unit with appropriate physical and functional interfaces was procured for testing. The physical functionality and the feasibility of fabrication of the hybrid integrated circuit were successfully verified. The remaining work to develop a flight-qualified device includes fabrication and testing of a Mil-certified part. An option for completing the PHCC flight qualification testing is to enter into a joint venture with industry.
