Matrix Completion Using Alternating Minimization for Distribution System State Estimation

This paper examines the problem of state estimation in power distribution systems under low-observability conditions. The recently proposed constrained matrix completion method which combines the standard matrix completion method and power flow constraints has been shown to be effective in estimating voltage phasors under low-observability conditions using single-snapshot information. However, the method requires solving a semidefinite programming (SDP) problem, which becomes computationally infeasible for large systems and if multiple-snapshot (time-series) information is used. This paper proposes an efficient algorithm to solve the constrained matrix completion problem with time-series data. This algorithm is based on reformulating the matrix completion problem as a bilinear (non-convex) optimization problem, and applying the alternating minimization algorithm to solve this problem. This paper proves the summable convergence of the proposed algorithm, and demonstrates its efficacy and scalability via IEEE 123-bus system and a real utility feeder system. This paper also explores the value of adding more data from the history in terms of computation time and estimation accuracy.

Flexible Machine Learning-Based Cyberattack Detection Using Spatiotemporal Patterns for Distribution Systems

This letter develops a flexible machine learning detection method for cyberattacks in distribution systems considering spatiotemporal patterns. Spatiotemporal patterns are recognized by the graph Laplacian based on system-wide measurements. A flexible Bayes classifier (BC) is used to train spatiotemporal patterns which could be violated when cyberattacks occur. Cyberattacks are detected by using flexible BCs online. The effectiveness of the developed method is demonstrated through standard IEEE 13- and 123-node test feeders.

Evaluating Network Performance of Containerized Test Framework for Distributed Space Systems

Distributed space systems are a mission architecture consisting of multiple spacecraft as a cohesive system which provide multipoint sampling, increased mission coverage, or improved sample resolution, while reducing mission risk through redundancy. To fully realize the potential of these systems, eventually scaling to hundreds or thousands of spacecraft, distributed space systems need to be operated as a single entity, which will enable a variety of novel scientific space missions. The Distributed Spacecraft Autonomy (DSA) project is a software project which aims to mature the technology needed for those systems, namely autonomous decision-making and swarm networking. The DSA project leverages a containerized swarm test framework to simulate spacecraft software, which can identify emergent behavior early in development. Container virtualization allows distributed spacecraft systems to be simulated entirely in software on a single computer, avoiding the overhead associated with conventional approaches like hardware facsimiles and virtual machines. For this approach to be effective, the simulated system behavior must not be artificially influenced by the swarm test framework itself. To address this, we present a series of benchmarks to quantify virtual network bandwidth available on a single-host computer and contextualize this against the network and application behavior of the DSA swarm test framework.

Restoration Strategy for Active Distribution Systems Considering Endogenous Uncertainty in Cold Load Pickup

Cold load pickup (CLPU) phenomenon is identified as the persistent power inrush upon a sudden load pickup after an outage. Under the active distribution system (ADS) paradigm, where distributed energy resources (DERs) are extensively installed, the decreased outage duration can induce a strong interdependence between CLPU pattern and load pickup decisions. In this paper, we propose a novel modelling technique to tractably capture the decision-dependent uncertainty (DDU) inherent in the CLPU process. Subsequently, a two-stage stochastic decision-dependent service restoration (SDDSR) model is constructed, where first stage searches for the optimal switching sequences to decide step-wise network topology, and the second stage optimizes the detailed generation schedule of DERs as well as the energization of switchable loads. Further, to tackle the computational burdens introduced by mixed-integer recourse, the progressive hedging algorithm (PHA) is utilized to decompose the original model into scenario-wise subproblems that can be solved in parallel. The numerical test on modified IEEE 123-node test feeders has verified the efficiency of our proposed SDDSR model and provided fresh insights into the monetary and secure values of DDU quantification.

Globally optimal maneuver of distributed systems

This paper examines the globally optimal maneuver of distributed systems undergoing large overall rigid-body motion and small relative elastic motion. Using floating coordinates the rigid-body motion and the elastic motion are decoupled thereby allowing the globally optimal maneuver problem to be separated into components associated with the rigid-body and elastic motions. The maneuvers are performed using distributed maneuvering forces based on modal measurements. The modal measurements are extracted from the physical measurements using modal filters. Rest-to-rest maneuvers of a uniform beam illustrate the decentralized nature of the globally optimal solutions.

Robust PCA-Deep Belief Network Surrogate Model for Distribution System Topology Identification with DERs

With the expansion of distribution networks and increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), it is becoming increasingly important to obtain accurate distribution network topology in real-time. In this paper, a robust principal component analysis coupled deep belief network (PCA-DBN) surrogate model is proposed for distribution system topology identification. It integrates the benefits of robust feature extraction from PCA to deal with data quality issues and filter out noise, and the strength of DBN in capturing the nonlinear relationship between voltage amplitudes and the binary states of switchable connections. This also significantly reduces the DBN training complexity without loss of accuracy. It is shown that the widely used standard deviation of voltage drop and the voltage covariance matrix features yield less accuracy as compared to that of the voltage amplitudes in presence of high penetration of DERs and ZIP loads. Comparison results with other alternatives, such as the random forest (RF), multi-output regression (MOR) and the traditional DBN methods demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve a much higher topology identification accuracy while maintaining robustness to missing data and measurement noise under various penetration levels of DERs.

Effectively Considering the Distribution System in Integrated Resource Plans

While electricity planning practices vary by state and utility based on utility type and market structure, integrated resource planning (IRP) remains a prominent vehicle — even in states with centrally-organized wholesale electricity markets. IRP focuses on meeting forecasted long-term electricity needs. Typically, utilities have not considered impacts of design and operation of the low-voltage distribution network in IRP. With advanced capabilities of grid-edge technologies to generate and store electricity and provide load flexibility, and large utility investments in distribution systems, it's increasingly important to consider at least some distribution planning elements in IRP. This report considers the value proposition for doing so, such as reducing utility costs through resource co-optimization and strategic siting of grid-edge resources, and idenfities the most important touchpoints between planning for bulk power and distribution systems and provide a range of tactics for integrating these two processes.

Curriculum-based Reinforcement Learning for Distribution System Critical Load Restoration

This paper focuses on the critical load restoration problem in distribution systems following major outages. To provide fast online response and optimal sequential decision-making support, a reinforcement learning (RL) based approach is proposed to optimize the restoration. Due to the complexities stemming from the large policy search space, renewable uncertainty, and nonlinearity in a complex grid control problem, directly applying RL algorithms to train a satisfactory policy requires extensive tuning to be successful. To address this challenge, this paper leverages the curriculum learning (CL) technique to design a training curriculum involving a simpler steppingstone problem that guides the RL agent to learn to solve the original hard problem in a progressive and more effective manner. We demonstrate that compared with direct learning, CL facilitates controller training to achieve better performance. To study realistic scenarios where renewable forecasts used for decision-making are in general imperfect, the experiments compare the trained RL controllers against two model predictive controllers (MPCs) using renewable forecasts with different error levels and observe how these controllers can hedge against the uncertainty. Results show that RL controllers are less susceptible to forecast errors than the baseline MPCs and can provide a more reliable restoration process.

Resilience Metrics for Building-Level Electrical Distribution Systems with Energy Storage

The energy system infrastructure that delivers power to a building's loads needs to be resilient to withstand and recover from extreme outages (e.g., grid faults that leave millions of people without power during severe weather events). Building-level electrical distribution systems (BEDSs) distribute power from a building's energy sources - including the grid, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, and batteries - to its loads, including lighting, HVAC, and plug loads. BEDS with storage can provide resilience by distributing local electricity supply to critical loads during an outage. Quantitative metrics are needed to assess the resilience improvements associated with new BEDS and storage system technologies. In this paper, we apply an existing metric, the probability of outage survival curve (POSC), to BEDS with storage and propose novel metrics that improve upon POSC. Through a simulation-based case study, we demonstrate how these metrics are impacted by the BEDS design and how they can be used to design a resilient system.
