Hardness Assurance and Testing Techniques for High Resolution (12- to 16-bit) Analog-to-Digital Converters

Discussed are hardness assurance and testing techniques to test and evaluate total dose radiation degradation of high resolution A/D converters. Because high-speed, high-resolution converters are critical parts in a digital signal processing or data acquisition system, the evaluation of performance in the early design phase is very important. Converters from three manufacturers are evaluated.

Initial evaluation of commercially available InGaAsP DFB laser diodes for use in high-speed digital fiber optic transceivers

NASA has been pursuing the development of high-speed fiber-optic transceivers for use in a number of space data system applications. Current efforts are directed toward a high-performance all-integrated-circuit transceiver operating up to the 3-5 Gb/s range. Details of the evaluation and selection of candidate high-speed optical sources to be used in the space-qualified high-performance transceiver are presented. Data on the performance of commercially available DFB (distributed feedback) lasers are presented, and their performance relative to each other and to their structural design with regard to their use in high-performance fiber-optic transceivers is discussed. The DFB lasers were obtained from seven commercial manufacturers. The data taken on each laser included threshold current, differential quantum efficiency, CW side mode suppression radio, wavelength temperature coefficient, threshold temperature coefficient, natural linewidth, and far field pattern. It was found that laser diodes with buried heterostructures and first-order gratings had, in general, the best CW operating characteristics. The modulated characteristics of the DFB laser diodes are emphasized. Modulated linewidth, modulated side mode suppression ratio, and frequency response are discussed.

Validation of Pronghorn for Natural-Circulation Molten Salt Loops

This paper presents the development and validation of a high-fidelity thermal-hydraulic model of a molten salt natural circulation flow loop, designed for integration within a digital twin framework. The study evaluates the performance of Idaho National Laboratory’s Pronghorn against experimental data from Texas A&M University Molten Salt Flow Loop (MSFL) four Hitec-salt test benchmark data. Natural circulation of high-Prandtl-number fluids exhibits complex, counter-intuitive flow patterns that make pointwise thermocouple readings unreliable. Experimental work at TAMU’s MSFL provides benchmark data, including flow visualization at a test-section and centerline steady-state temperature measurements along the loop. Validation includes four single-phase natural circulation test cases with Hitec salt. Key metrics include flow profile agreement and steady-state temperature accuracy. Pronghorn results for two-dimensional single-phase agree qualitatively with the experimental flow profile. This paper illustrates the importance of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in elucidating the behavior of high-Prandtl-number thermal-hydraulics, along with how misleading centerline temperature measurements can be. Pronghorn reproduces the axial and radial stratification that makes single thermocouple readings unreliable. Future research will focus on reduced-order modeling techniques to enable rapid simulation suitable for real-time digital twin applications. The validated cases provide a basis for developing reduced-order surrogates aimed at real-time digital-twin applications.

Evaluation of an F100 multivariable control using a real-time engine simulation

The control evaluated has been designed for the F100-PW-100 turbofan engine. The F100 engine represents the current state-of-the-art in aircraft gas turbine technology. The control makes use of a multivariable, linear quadratic regulator. The evaluation procedure employed utilized a real-time hybrid computer simulation of the F100 engine and an implementation of the control logic on the NASA LeRC digital computer/controller. The results of the evaluation indicated that the control logic and its implementation will be capable of controlling the engine throughout its operating range.

Fault detection and accommodation testing on an F100 engine in an F-15 airplane

The fault detection and accommodation (FDA) methodology for digital engine-control systems may range from simple comparisons of redundant parameters to the more complex and sophisticated observer models of the entire engine system. Evaluations of the various FDA schemes are done using analytical methods, simulation, and limited-altitude-facility testing. Flight testing of the FDA logic has been minimal because of the difficulty of inducing realistic faults in flight. A flight program was conducted to evaluate the fault detection and accommodation capability of a digital electronic engine control in an F-15 aircraft. The objective of the flight program was to induce selected faults and evaluate the resulting actions of the digital engine controller. Comparisons were made between the flight results and predictions. Several anomalies were found in flight and during the ground test. Simulation results showed that the inducement of dual pressure failures was not feasible since the FDA logic was not designed to accommodate these types of failures.

Development and modification of a digital program for final approach to landing

The development and implementation of a dynamic digital computer simulator which may be used to evaluate aircraft performance when operating under the control and guidance of various navigation, landing, and flight control systems are discussed. The digital computer program may be used to simulate and evaluate the relationships and interactions between various factors such as the microwave landing system, avionics receivers and onboard processors, aircraft aerodynamics, aircraft automatic control systems, control surfaces, and wind and other external effects. The models used to represent aircraft aerodynamics, control system and control surfaces; weather and wind effects; and the microwave landing system are described. Example results are presented for a simulation of a Boeing 737 using two sample control systems while subjected to various atmospheric conditions and microwave landing system errors. The limitations and performance capabilities of these control systems are discussed in terms of their ability to utilize the microwave landing system signal.

Scaling Outlooks on Integrated Energy Systems

The report provides research summaries of two developed theories: data projection to enable multi-scale facility digital interactions and introducing the Evaluation Model Development and Assessment Process (EMDAP) approach to Integrated Energy Systems (IES) design. For the data projection, a two-system scaling case including interactions between thermal storage and hydrogen production is provided. The corresponding facilities are the thermal energy distribution system (TEDS) facility and high temperature steam electrolysis (HTSE) facility at the Dynamic Energy Transport and Integration Laboratory (DETAIL) in Idaho National Laboratory (INL). For the EMDAP adaption to system design, a modified process of the EMDAP was developed and applied to indirect two-tank heat storage system design. System phenomena were identified, ranked, and scaled to discover helpful key relations that would determine the ideal component geometry.

Competitive evaluation of failure detection algorithms for strapdown redundant inertial instruments.

Seven algorithms for failure detection, isolation, and correction of strapdown inertial instruments in the dodecahedron configuration are competitively evaluated by means of a digital computer simulation that provides them with identical inputs. Their performance is compared in terms of orientation errors and computer burden. The analytical foundations of the algorithms are presented. The features that are found to contribute to superior performance are use of a definite logical structure, elimination of interaction between failures, different thresholds for first and second failures, use of the 'parity' test signals, and avoidance of iteration loops.

Microprocessor realizations of range rate filters

The performance of five digital range rate filters is evaluated. A range rate filter receives an input of range data from a radar unit and produces an output of smoothed range data and its estimated derivative range rate. The filters are compared through simulation on an IBM 370. Two of the filter designs are implemented on a 6800 microprocessor-based system. Comparisons are made on the bases of noise variance reduction ratios and convergence times of the filters in response to simulated range signals.

Determination of potential solar power sites in the United States based upon satellite cloud observations

The use of cloud images in the visual spectrum from the SMS/GOES geostationary satellites to determine the hourly distribution of sunshine on a mesoscale in the continental United States excluding Alaska is presented. Cloud coverage and density as a function of time of day and season are evaluated through the use of digital data processing techniques. Low density cirrus clouds are less detrimental to solar energy collection than other types; and clouds in the morning and evening are less detrimental than those during midday hours of maximum insolation. Seasonal geographic distributions of cloud cover/sunshine are converted to langleys of solar radiation received at the earth's surface through relationships developed from long term measurements at six widely distributed stations.

Mesoscale mapping of available solar energy at the earth's surface by use of satellites

A method is presented for use of cloud images in the visual spectrum from the SMS/GOES geostationary satellites to determine the hourly distribution of sunshine on the mesoscale. Cloud coverage and density as a function of time of day and season are evaluated through the use of digital data processing techniques. Seasonal geographic distributions of cloud cover/sunshine are converted to joules of solar radiation received at the earth's surface through relationships developed from long-term measurements of these two parameters at six widely distributed stations. The technique can be used to generate maps showing the geographic distribution of total solar radiation on the mesoscale which is received at the earth's surface.
