Origins of high ductility exhibited by an extruded magnesium alloy Mg-1.8Zn-0.2Ca: Experiments and crystal plasticity modeling

Low ductility and strength are major bottlenecks against Mg alloys' wide applications. In this work, we systematically design the composition and fabrication process for a low-alloyed Mg-Zn-Ca alloy, showing that it can be extruded at low temperatures (~ 250 degrees C) and high speeds (~2 mm/s). After the extrusion, this alloy exhibits a substantially weakened basal texture, relatively small grain size, very high tensile elongation (~ 30%), and good strength. The origin of the considerably improved ductility was studied using a combination of three-dimensional atom probe tomography (3D-APT), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) in conjunction with surface slip trace analysis, in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction, and elasto-plastic self-consistent (EPSC) modeling. Co-segregation of Zn and Ca atoms at a grain boundary is observed and associated with texture weakening and grain boundary mediated plasticity, both improving the ductility. While basal slip and prismatic slip are identified as the dominant deformation systems in the alloy, the ratio between their slip resistances is substantially reduced relative to pure Mg and most other Mg alloys, significantly contributing to the improved ductility of the alloy. This Mg-Zn-Ca alloy exhibiting excellent mechanical properties and low fabrication cost is a promising candidate for industrial productions.

Enhancing Direct Electrochemical CO 2 Electrolysis by Introducing A-Site Deficiency for the Dual-Phase Pr(Ca)Fe(Ni)O 3-δ Cathode

High-temperature CO 2 electrolysis via solid oxide electrolysis cells (CO 2 –SOECs) has drawn special attention due to the high energy convention efficiency, fast electrode kinetics, and great potential in carbon cycling. However, the development of cathode materials with high catalytic activity and chemical stability for pure CO 2 electrolysis is still a great challenge. In this work, A-site cation deficient dual-phase material, namely (Pr 0.4 Ca 0.6 ) x Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ (PCFN, x = 1, 0.95, and 0.9), has been designed as the fuel electrode for a pure CO 2 –SOEC, which presents superior electrochemical performance. Among all these compositions, (Pr 0.4 Ca 0.6 ) 0.95 Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ (PCFN95) exhibited the lowest polarization resistance of 0.458 Ω cm 2 at open-circuit voltage and 800 °C. The application of PCFN95 as the cathode in a single cell yields an impressive electrolysis current density of 1.76 A cm -2 at 1.5 V and 800 °C, which is 76% higher than that of single cells with stoichiometric Pr 0.4 Ca 0.6 Fe 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 3-δ (PCFN100) cathode. The effects of A-site deficiency on materials' phase structure and physicochemical properties are also systematically investigated. Such an enhancement in electrochemical performance is attributed to the promotion of effective CO 2 adsorption, as well as the improved electrode kinetics resulting from the A-site deficiency.

Elucidating grain boundary energy minimization mechanisms in textured Ca-doped alumina with inclination-dependent Monte Carlo Potts simulations

The grain growth behavior of textured Ca-doped alumina is compared to Monte Carlo Potts (MCP) simulations to investigate the effect of anisotropic grain boundary (GB) properties on local boundary migration. Experimentally, the growth of textured Ca-doped alumina results in highly elongated grains. The relative GB energy distribution is measured using the thermal groove method before and after heat treating at 1600°C, finding that high energy GBs are eliminated during grain growth. No significant difference in the GB energy distributions is found between the long and short axes of the elongated grains, suggesting that anisotropic mobility may be responsible for the grain shape. However, MCP simulations with anisotropic mobility as a function of plane inclination do not result in grains with distinct morphologies, regardless of the degree of anisotropy introduced. The final grain shape after grain growth of textured Ca-doped alumina resembles that of the MCP simulations using an anisotropic GB energy as a cosine function of plane inclination. Several energy functions are tested and only those that mathematically impose a torque (second derivative of energy with respect to the plane inclination angle) result in elongated grains. Although area reduction is the dominant energy minimization mechanism, these results suggest that local GB migration is affected by anisotropic GB energy and torque and alternative mechanisms like GB replacement and reorientation.
