Dual active site tandem catalysis of metal hydroxyl oxides and single atoms for boosting oxygen evolution reaction

We report the high voltage in oxygen evolution reaction (OER) often causes structural change in electrocatalysts and forms multiple active sites. Therefore, exploring the synergy of various active sites is extremely significant to develop catalysts for OER with multiple elementary steps. Herein, we adopt the physically adsorbed metal ions method to successfully synthesize a highly-efficient electrocatalyst containing the dual active sites of Fe-NiOOH and NiC4 single atoms (marked as Ni SAs/Fe-NiOOH). The Ni SAs/Fe-NiOOH displays outstanding OER performance with an overpotential of 269 mV to deliver current density of 10 mA/cm 2 that shows 55 mV superior to commercial IrO 2 /CB at the same condition. Experiments and density functional theory calculations indicate that the excellent OER activity of Ni SAs/Fe-NiOOH catalyst is attributed to the synergy of dual active sites of NiC 4 SAs and Fe-NiOOH. A tandem catalysis mechanism is also proposed to reveal the synergism of two active centers, which makes the potential-determining step more facile and accordingly decreases the OER overpotential. This work offers a new concept of tandem catalysis to develop the electrocatalysts with many elemental steps, like OER and oxygen reduction reaction catalysts.

Ionomer-free nanoporous iridium nanosheet electrodes with boosted performance and catalyst utilization for high-efficiency water electrolyzers

Increasing the catalyst utilization efficiency and simplifying electrode fabrication processes are crucial to accelerate development of low-cost proton exchange membrane electrolyzer cells (PEMECs). Here, we develop a facile route to fabricate ionomer-free iridium nanosheet integrated electrodes, in which nanoporous iridium nanosheets (IrNS) with abundant exposed edges and nanopores are deposited on thin titanium liquid/gas diffusion layers (TT-LGDLs) via a low-temperature chemical synthesis strategy. Further, benefiting from high catalytic activity, good electrode conductivity and excellent liquid/gas transport properties, such nanoporous IrNS electrodes with low catalyst loadings require low cell voltages of 1.65 V and 1.78 V at 3000 and 6000 mA/cm 2 , respectively. More impressively, a stable performance can be well maintained under extremely high current density tests of 5000 mA/cm 2 , demonstrating the potential of low-loading nanoporous IrNS electrodes in solid-electrolyte based electrochemical conversion cells that require high current density operation.

Orbital engineering of C 3 N monolayer to design efficient synergistic sites electrocatalyst for boosting alkaline hydrogen evolution

Alkaline water electrolyzer (AWE) is one of the promising technologies for hydrogen production at the industrial level. However, energetic inefficiency and low current density impede the development of AWE. Compared with acidic conditions, the Volmer step in alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) involves extra water dissociation, whose barrier is one of the most vital reasons for the sluggish kinetics of alkaline HER. Herein, choosing C 3 N monolayer as an ideal theoretical model, we design several empty orbitals through intentional metal doping, and further construct synergistic sites on the C 3 N monolayer to accelerate both water dissociation and hydrogen adsorption for alkaline HER. Furthermore, the as-designed Be-doped and Cr-doped C 3 N monolayers exhibit rather low theoretical overpotential of 0.476 eV and 0.216 eV for alkaline HER, respectively, which are even lower than Pt (1 1 1) surface. Moreover, by comparing the water dissociation behaviors on metal-doped C3N monolayer, we find that the empty orbitals with suitable orientation and energy level are useful for promoting the water dissociation process, indicating that we can use orbital engineering strategy to regulate the adsorption strength between adsorbate and surface site. Consequently, it is reasonable to suggest that our orbital engineering strategy would significantly benefit the design of highly efficient alkaline HER electrocatalysts.

Precisely modulate interfacial Bi-O bridge bond in Co-TCPP/Bi 3 O 4 Br to trigger long-lasting charge separation for boosting CO 2 photoreduction

Insufficient charge separation and feeble CO 2 activation limit the CO 2 photoreduction efficiency. It is highly desirable to consciously construct organic–inorganic hybrid composites to simultaneously accelerate charge separation and provide favorable active sites. Herein, a defect-induced interfacial Bi-O bridge bond is constructed by grafting terminal O of cobalt porphyrin (Co-TCPP) with Bi 3 O4Br. Systematic investigations reveal that the Bi-O bridge bond as the charge migration bridge accelerates the extraction and transfer of electron from the external [Bi 3 O 4 ] layers to Co-TCPP, and the millisecond separation lifetime of electrons on Co-TCPP can be achieved. Co atoms as the active sites optimized the CO 2 adsorption and activation, thus promoting the formation of COOH*. As a result, the CO 2 photoreduction rate of 0.5% Co-TCPP/Bi 3 O4Br reaches 71.3 μmol g -1 h -1 in pure water, 2.53-fold of that on the pristine Bi 3 O4Br. This work provides atomistic insights and strategies for the construction of new organic–inorganic hybrid materials for artificial photosynthesis and CO 2 photoreduction.

Boosting the use of bauxite residue (red mud) in cement - Production of an Fe-rich calciumsulfoaluminate-ferrite clinker and characterisation of the hydration

Highlights: • Incorporation of 35 wt% of bauxite residue for production of CSAF clinker • Thermochemical calculations as suitable tool for predicting phase assemblage • Hydration of the cement was found to be accelerated in contrast to other CSA cements. • High early compressive strengths of 40 MPa In the present work, calciumsulfoaluminate-ferrite clinker was produced using 35 wt% of bauxite residue in combination with alumina, clay, limestone and gypsum. At a temperature of 1300 °C, the hydraulic phases ye'elimite, ferrite and C{sub 2}S were formed. Computed thermochemical predictions were a significantly better match for the real mineralogy than modified Bogue equations. Hydration of the clinker led to the formation of ettringite and monosulfate, resulting in compressive strengths of 17 MPa after 28d. Compressive strengths of 40 MPa after 2d, and 28d-strengths exceeding 50 MPa, were reached in blends with 10 wt% of anhydrite. The strength development was due to the rapid formation of ettringite, mainly originating from ye'elimite, which did not convert to AFm phases and led to a compact microstructure. Only when the ye'elimite dissolution decreased, did the ferrite phase react. In pastes with additional sulfates, ferrite hydration led to the formation of ettringite and to hydrogarnet. Cement nomenclature is used in this work.{sup 1}.

Boosting efficiency and reducing graph reliance: Basis adaptation integration in Bayesian multi-fidelity networks

The computational cost of high-fidelity numerical models makes outer-loop analysis, which requires repeated interrogation of the model such as uncertainty quantification, computationally demanding. Multi-fidelity methods, which construct a surrogate model using data from an ensemble of models of varying cost and accuracy, can substantially reduce the cost of outer-loop analysis. However, these methods can be difficult to apply when the model ensemble does not admit a clear hierarchy a priori and the correlations between models are low. Consequently, in this paper, we present a multi-fidelity method that leverages dimension reduction to enhance the correlation between models, thereby reducing the amount of data needed to train a surrogate from an unordered ensemble of models. Our method utilizes basis adaptation to build low-dimensional polynomial chaos expansions of each model and employs Multi-fidelity Networks to encode the relationships among models. We show that the resulting method exhibit two notable advantages over its counterpart: (1) enhanced accuracy (both reduced bias and variance); and (2) reduced dependency on the graph structure encoding relationships among models. We demonstrate the approach on an analytical test problem and a challenging finite element model for a spent nuclear fuel. Our method produces a surrogate model that is significantly more accurate than either a single-fidelity surrogate or a multi-fidelity surrogate constructed without basis adaptation.

Interface stability of LiCl-rich argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 Cl with propylene carbonate boosts high-performance lithium batteries

In solid-state lithium (Li)-metal batteries (SSLMBs), sulfide-based Li-ion conductors represent one of the most popular solid electrolytes (SEs). However, the development of sulfide-based SSLMBs is significantly hampered by interfacial issues including large solid-solid contact resistance and serious side reactions at the SE/electrode interface. To address these issues, here, we demonstrated a simple and efficient strategy by using LiCl-rich argyrodite Li 6 PS 5 Cl (Li 6 PS 5 Cl-LiCl) SE and trace amount of propylene carbonate (PC) at the SE/electrode interface to facilitate the formation of stable and robust solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Additionally, the formed SEI not only serves as a buffer layer to passivate the interfacial reactions and suppress Li dendrite growth, but also acts as a bridge for Li-ion conduction to reduce the contact resistance. As a result, the Li||Li symmetric cell exhibited long-term electrochemical cycling stability over 1000 h at a current density of 0.2 mA cm -2 . Furthermore, the assembled Li||Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) batteries delivered a specific capacity of 175 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C, and remained an excellent specific capacity of 116 mAh g –1 after 200 cycles at a high current rate of 1 C. These features indicate a feasible strategy to enhance the interfacial property of high-performance SSLMBs.
