Sorbent Mediated Electrocatalytic Reduction of Dilute CO 2 to Methane

Efficient CO 2 utilization is a critical component of closing the anthropogenic carbon cycle. Most studies have focused on the use of pure streams of CO 2 . However, CO 2 is generally available only in dilute streams, which requires capture by sorbents followed by energy-intensive regeneration to release concentrated CO 2 . Direct utilization of sorbed-CO 2 avoids the costly regeneration step, and the sorbent-CO 2 interaction can kinetically activate CO 2 to tune its reactivity toward products that could otherwise be inaccessible with direct CO 2 reduction. We demonstrate that an N-heterocyclic carbene, 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene (DPIy), quantitatively reacts with CO 2 from dilute streams (0.04 and 10%) to form the sorbent-CO 2 substrate 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolium-2-carboxylate (DPICx). Electrocatalyst iron tetraphenylporphyrin chloride (Fe(TPP)Cl) typically reduces CO 2 to CO; however, with DPICx as the substrate, the eight-electron reduced product methane (CH 4 ) is produced with a high Faradaic efficiency (>85%) and regeneration of the sorbent DPIy. In addition to the overall energy and capital advantages of integrated CO 2 capture and conversion, this result illustrates how sorbents can serve a dual purpose for both CO 2 capture and chemical auxiliary purposes to access unique products. CO 2 has a spectrum of reactivity with different types of sorbents; thus, these studies demonstrate how sorbent-CO 2 interactions can be leveraged for integrated capture and utilization platforms to access a wider range of CO 2 -derived products.

Coherent Control over Nuclear Hyperpolarization Using an Optically Initializable Chromophore-Radical System

Chromophore radicals (CR) are emerging as important components for molecular quantum information science (QIS), especially in the context of quantum sensing. Here, we demonstrate that the optically hyperpolarized electrons in a 1,6,7,12-tetrakis(4-tert-butylphenoxy)-perylene-3,4,9,10-bis(dicarboximide) (tpPDI) covalently linked to a partially deuterated 1,3-bis(diphenylene)-d 16 -2-phenylallyl radical (BDPA-d 16 ) can be coherently manipulated via pulsed dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) methods to transfer polarization to nuclear spins and back. Under light illumination at 85 K, electron hyperpolarization in BDPA is enhanced 2.1- to 2.4-fold over thermal polarization and lasts for more than 100 ms. By applying nuclear orientation via electron spin-locking (NOVEL) DNP, this optically amplified electron hyperpolarization was successfully transferred to a 1 H nuclear spin within the CR system and efficiently returned to the electron spin for readout via reverse-NOVEL. The NOVEL transfer efficiency of 65% amounts to a 688-fold nuclear spin hyperpolarization of the target nuclear spin, considering the 2.1-fold electron spin hyperpolarization. This reversible coherent manipulation of hyperpolarization transfer highlights the utility of CR systems to initialize and read out nuclear spin states in a disordered matrix at moderate cryogenic temperatures. Coupled with CRs’ environmental compatibility, tunability, and precise state initialization, these results highlight the promising role of nuclear spins in CRs for QIS applications, including quantum sensing and memory.

A Reversible Structural Phase Transition by Electrochemically-Driven Ion Injection into a Conjugated Polymer

We nd that conjugated polymers can undergo reversible structural phase transitions during electrochemical oxidation and ion injection. We study poly[2,5-bis(thiophenyl)-1,4-bis(2-(2-(2- methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)benzene] (PB2T-TEG), a conjugated polymer with glycolated side chains. Using grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), we show that, in contrast to previously known polymers, this polymer switches between two structurally distinct crystalline phases associated with electrochemical oxidation/reduction in an aqueous electrolyte. Importantly, we show that this unique phase change behavior has important physical consequences for ion transport. Notably, using moving front experi- ments visualized by both optical microscopy and super-resolution photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM), we show that a propagating ion front in PB2T-TEG exhibits non-Fickian transport, retaining a sharp step-edge prole, in stark contrast to the Fickian diusion more commonly observed. This structural phase transition is reminiscent of those accompanying ion uptake in inorganic materials like LiFePO4. We propose that engineering similar properties in future conjugated polymers may enable the realization of new materials with superior performance in electrochemical energy storage or neuromorphic memory applications.

Promoting multiexciton interactions in singlet fission and triplet fusion upconversion dendrimers

Abstract Singlet fission and triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion are two multiexciton processes intimately related to the dynamic interaction between one high-lying energy singlet and two low-lying energy triplet excitons. Here, we introduce a series of dendritic macromolecules that serve as platform to study the effect of interchromophore interactions on the dynamics of multiexciton generation and decay as a function of dendrimer generation. The dendrimers (generations 1–4) consist of trimethylolpropane core and 2,2-bis(methylol)propionic acid (bis-MPA) dendrons that provide exponential growth of the branches, leading to a corona decorated with pentacenes for SF or anthracenes for TTA-UC. The findings reveal a trend where a few highly ordered sites emerge as the dendrimer generation grows, dominating the multiexciton dynamics, as deduced from optical spectra, and transient absorption spectroscopy. While the dendritic structures enhance TTA-UC at low annihilator concentrations in the largest dendrimers, the paired chromophore interactions induce a broadened and red-shifted excimer emission. In SF dendrimers of higher generations, the triplet dynamics become increasingly dominated by pairwise sites exhibiting strong coupling (Type II), which can be readily distinguished from sites with weaker coupling (Type I) by their spectral dynamics and decay kinetics.

SuFExable polymers with helical structures derived from thionyl tetrafluoride

Sulfur(VI) fluoride exchange (SuFEx) is a category of click chemistry that enables covalent linking of modular units through sulfur(VI) connective hubs. The efficiency of SuFEx and the stability of the resulting bonds have led to polymer chemistry applications. Now, we report the SuFEx click chemistry synthesis of several structurally diverse SOF 4 -derived copolymers based on the polymerization of bis(iminosulfur oxydifluorides) and bis(aryl silyl ethers). This polymer class presents two key characteristics. First, the [-N=S(=O)F-O-] polymer backbone linkages are themselves SuFExable and undergo precise SuFEx-based post-modification with phenols or amines to yield branched functional polymers. Second, studies of individual polymer chains of several of these new materials indicate helical polymer structures. The robust nature of SuFEx click chemistry offers the potential for post-polymerization modification, enabling the synthesis of materials with control over composition and conformation.

Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with strain-resistant performance

Realizing fully stretchable electronic materials is central to advancing new types of mechanically agile and skin-integrable optoelectronic device technologies. Here we demonstrate a materials design concept combining an organic semiconductor film with a honeycomb porous structure with biaxially prestretched platform that enables high-performance organic electrochemical transistors with a charge transport stability over 30-140% tensional strain, limited only by metal contact fatigue. In this work, the prestretched honeycomb semiconductor channel of donor-acceptor polymer poly(2,5-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-di(thiophen-2-yl)-2,5-diketo-pyrrolopyrrole-alt-2,5-bis(3-triethyleneglycoloxy-thiophen-2-yl) exhibits high ion uptake and completely stable electrochemical and mechanical properties over 1,500 redox cycles with 10(4) stretching cycles under 30% strain. Invariant electrocardiogram recording cycles and synapse responses under varying strains, along with mechanical finite element analysis, underscore that the present stretchable organic electrochemical transistor design strategy is suitable for diverse applications requiring stable signal output under deformation with low power dissipation and mechanical robustness. Highly stretchable organic electrochemical transistors with stable charge transport under severe tensional strains are demonstrated using a honeycomb semiconducting polymer morphology, thereby enabling controllable signal output for diverse stretchable bioelectronic applications.

Esterification of 3-quinuclidinol, a marker for the incapacitant BZ, for analysis by EI-GC-MS in OPCW test matrices

The analysis by EI-GC-MS of 3-quinuclidinol (3Q), a marker for the riot control and incapacitating agent quinuclinidyl benzilate (BZ), using several, new acylation strategies is described. After evaluating and optimizing conditions for the acylations, these were tested on their ability to successfully derivatize 3Q in three different matrices featured in the 44th Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) proficiency test (PT). As 3Q is a highly polar compound, the work here describes acylation strategies that generate 3Q analogs with superior gas chromatographic profiles relative to the underivatized material. The acyl groups studied in this work included acetyl, benzoyl, pentafluorobenzoyl and the bis(3,5-trifluoromethyl)benzoyl. The acylated 3Q products provide sharp, detectable peaks with significantly different retention times from that of the unmodified 3Q. Thus, the retention times for acetyl-, benzoyl-, pentafluorobenzoyl- and 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzoyl-3Q were determined to be 15.9, 24.9, 22.8 and 22.1 min respectively, in stark contrast to the unmodified 3Q which provides a sharp peak with a retention time centered at ~ 13.5 min only at high concentrations (> 10 µg/mL or µg/g) while a broad peak (RT ~ 15–15.5 min) at low concentrations (< 5 µg/mL or µg/g). The developed protocol was used to derivatize 3Q in three separate matrices. The first two matrices were liquid samples featured during the 44th OPCW PT at two separate concentrations in each (5 and 50 µg/mL). The last matrix was a soil sample featured in the same 44th OPCW PT wherein the 3Q had been spiked at a 12 µg/g concentration. The approach involves the extraction of 3Q from all matrices followed by its acylation resulting in a second reportable analytical method for an OPCW PT. The presented derivatization strategies should find wide applicability particularly in laboratories involved with the analysis of this chemical weapon agent degradation product and those participating in the yearly OPCW PTs.

Selective sorption of oxygen and nitrous oxide by an electron donor-incorporated flexible coordination network

Incorporating strong electron donor functionality into flexible coordination networks is intriguing for sorption applications due to a built-in mechanism for electron-withdrawing guests. Here we report a 2D flexible porous coordination network, [Ni 2 (4,4'-bipyridine)(VTTF) 2 ]n(1) (where H 2 VTTF = 2,2;-[1,2-bis(4-benzoic acid)-1,2ethanediylidene]bis-1,3-benzodithiole), which exhibits large structural deformation from the as-synthesized or open phase (1α) into the closed phase (1β) after guest removal, as demonstrated by X-ray and electron diffraction. Interestingly, upon exposure to electron-withdrawing species, 1β reversibly undergoes guest accommodation transitions; 1α$\supset$O 2 (90 K) and 1α$\supset$N 2 O (185 K). Moreover, the 1β phase showed exclusive O 2 sorption over other gases (N 2 , Ar, and CO) at 120 K. The phase transformations between the 1α and 1β phases under these gases were carefully investigated by in-situ X-ray diffraction, in-situ spectroscopic studies, and DFT calculations, validating that the unusual sorption was attributed to the combination of flexible frameworks and VTTF (electron-donor) that induces strong interactions with electron-withdrawing species.

Low-spin cobalt(ii) redox shuttle by isocyanide coordination

Coordination of the strong-field ligand 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide (DMP-CN) to the Co(PY5Me 2 ) framework, where PY5Me 2 represents the pentadentate ligand 2,6-bis(1,1-bis(2-pyridyl)ethyl)pyridine, has resulted in a new low-spin Co(II) complex with a relatively low reorganization energy and fast electron-transfer kinetics compared to the prototypical cobalt tris-bipyridine redox shuttle, [Co(bpy) 3 ] 3+/2+ , where bpy represents 2,2'-bipyridine. Despite nearly 160 mV reduced regeneration driving force, the [Co(PY5Me 2 )(DMP-CN)]3+/2+ redox shuttle displayed an increased regeneration efficiency relative to [Co(bpy)3] 3+/2+ , however recombination losses hinder the performance as evidenced by a reduced recombination resistance. Finally, future directions point to low-spin Co(II) redox shuttles with more negative redox potentials to be paired with a dye or dye mixture that absorbs into the near infrared region.

Synthesis, structure, and electrochemical properties of [LNi(R f )(C 4 F 8 )] - and [LNi(R f ) 3 ] - complexes

The new anionic nickelate complexes [(MeCN)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(CF 3 )] -, [(MeCN)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(C 2 F 5 )] - , [(IMes)Ni(C 4 F 8 )(CF 3 )] - , [(IMes)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] - (IMes = 1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazol-2-ylidene), and [(F-NHC)Ni(Rf) 3 ] - (F-NHC = 1,3-bis(2,4-F2Ph), 2,4,6-F 3 Ph- or 3,4,5-F 3 Ph)imidazol-2-ylidene; (R f = CF 3 or C 2 F 5 ) were synthesized and structurally characterized. The electrochemical properties of all new compounds were revealed by cyclic voltammetry studies and compared to the known CF 3 analogue [(MeCN)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] -. The IMes-coordinated complexes exhibited initial oxidation events that were well-separated from a second oxidation process in the cyclic voltammograms. The complexes containing F-substituted NHC ligands [(F-NHC)Ni(CF 3 ) 3 ] - are structurally quite similar to the IMes derivative and reveal also two separated oxidation waves in their cyclic voltammograms. The absolute potentials as well as the separation between the two waves vary with the substitution pattern, suggesting that the NHC ligand environment (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) is an interesting platform for the development of new redox-triggered reactions that release trifluoromethyl and perfluoroalkyl radicals upon oxidation.

Mapping the influence of ligand electronics on the spectroscopic and 1 O 2 sensitization characteristics of Pd( ii ) biladiene complexes bearing phenyl–alkynyl groups at the 2- and 18-positions

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment for certain cancers that proceeds via sensitization of ground state 3 O 2 to generate reactive 1 O 2 . Classic macrocyclic tetrapyrrole ligand scaffolds, such as porphyrins and phthalocyanines, have been studied in detail for their 1 O 2 photosensitization capabilities. Despite their compelling photophysics, these systems have been limited in PDT applications because of adverse biological side effects. Conversely, the development of non-traditional oligotetrapyrrole ligands metalated with palladium (Pd[DMBil1]) have established new candidates for PDT that display excellent biocompatibility. Herein, the synthesis, electrochemical, and photophysical characterization of a new family of 2,18-bis(phenylalkynyl)-substituted Pd II 10,10-dimethyl-5,15-bis(pentafluorophenyl)-biladiene (Pd[DMBil2-R]) complexes is presented. These second generation biladienes feature extended conjugation relative to previously characterized Pd II biladiene scaffolds (Pd[DMBil1]). We show that these new derivatives can be prepared in good yield and, that the electronic nature of the phenylalkynyl appendages dramatically influence the Pd II biladiene photophysics. Extending the conjugation of the Pd[DMBil1] core through installation of phenylacetylene resulted in a ~75 nm red-shift of the biladiene absorption spectrum into the phototherapeutic window (600–900 nm), while maintaining the Pd II biladiene's steady-state spectroscopic 1 O 2 sensitization characteristics. Varying the electronics of the phenylalkyne groups via installation of electron donating or withdrawing groups dramatically influences the steady-state spectroscopic and photophysical properties of the resulting Pd[DMBil2-R] family of complexes. The most electron rich variants (Pd[DMBil2-N(CH3)2]) can absorb light as far red as ~700 nm but suffer from significantly reduced ability to sensitize formation of 1 O 2 . By contrast, Pd[DMBil2-R] derivatives bearing electron withdrawing functionalities (Pd[DMBil2-CN] and Pd[DMBil2-CF3]) display 1 O 2 quantum yields above 90%. The collection of results we report suggest that excited state charge transfer from more electron-rich phenyl-alkyne appendages to the electron deficient biladiene core circumvents triplet sensitization. The spectral and redox properties, as well as the triplet sensitization efficiency of each Pd[DMBil2-R] derivative is considered in relation to the Hammett value (σp) for each biladiene's R-group. More broadly, the results reported in this study clearly demonstrate that biladiene redox properties, spectral properties, and photophysics can be perturbed greatly by relatively minor alterations to biladiene structure.

Guerbet upgrading of ethanol to n -butanol using Ru( iii ) catalysts under air

A series of in situ prepared Ru(III) complexes supported by easily accessible N-donor organic pincer ligands were used as catalysts in the Guerbet upgrading reaction of ethanol under aerobic conditions. Tridentate bis(benzimidazole) ligand systems containing amino-dimethyl (L1) and pyridine (L2) backbones were found to make more efficient catalyst systems as compared to the bidentate bis(benzimidazole) ligand systems containing phenyl (L3) and ethene (L4) backbones. Potassium t-butoxide was found to be the most compatible base for this catalyst system. Reaction with 0.1 mol% of the catalyst and 10 mol% of potassium t-butoxide yielded 27% of n-butanol at 71% selectivity (150 °C, 24 h). Increase in the catalyst or base loading mostly resulted in increased reactivity but selectivity towards the key product n-butanol was found to decrease. On the other hand, reducing the reaction period to 12 h resulted in slightly decreased reactivity but the reaction provides n-butanol with high selectivity (76%). Contrarily, increased reaction period resulted in enhanced conversion of ethanol to higher alcohols. Under moderate and aerobic reaction conditions, the catalytic system was found to efficiently upgrade ethanol to higher alcohols. Furthermore, the decrease in the catalytic activity of the system over time was speculated to be due to the gradual deactivation of the base upon reaction with water (by-product of the Guerbet reaction). Poor solubility of the catalytic system in aqueous solutions makes it unsuitable for direct Guerbet reaction of fermentation broth.

Organocatalysis promoted by 1,2,3-triazolylidenes (MICs): carbenes which make a difference

N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) hold a unique significance in organometallic catalysis and are powerful organocatalysts for a variety of organic transformations involving crucial intermediates such as Breslow intermediates (BIs), deprotonated BIs (BI − s), ketyl radicals (KRs), and acyl azoliums (AAs). To address the remaining challenges facing reactions catalyzed by NHCs, non-classical stable carbenes, namely 1,2,3-triazolylidenes (MICs), cousins of NHCs, have shown great potential. MICs share similar features with typical NHCs but possess unique characteristics, such as enhanced σ-donor ability and absence of dimerization. Consequently, they have emerged as effective metal-free carbene catalysts for various chemical transformations. Furthermore, this review provides an overview of the fundamental characteristics of 1,2,3-triazolylidenes, along with the significant organic synthetic applications of these carbenes.

The pH-dependent orientation of N3 dye on a gold substrate is revealed using heterodyne-detected vibrational sum frequency generation spectroscopy

We report on systematic changes to the adsorption geometry of the dye N3 {[cis-bis(isothiocyanato)bis(2,2' -bipyridyl-4,4' -dicarboxylato ruthenium(II)]} on a gold substrate as the pH of the deposition environment is altered. The protonation states of the four --COOH groups of the N3 dye change according to the modified pH conditions, thus affecting the number of --COOH and --NCS functional groups that participate in the adsorption to gold. Here, we use heterodyne detected vibrational sum frequency generation (HD-VSFG) spectroscopy to obtain surface specific vibrational information on both --COOH and --NCS groups as a function of pH of the deposition conditions. Polarization-dependent HD-VSFG yields sets of complex χ (2) spectra, enabling us to perform a simultaneous fitting procedure to the polarization-dependent real and imaginary components and thus extract detailed structural information of the N3/gold interface. Overall, our results show that N3 preferentially adsorbs to gold either with two --COOH groups and one --NCS group in more acidic conditions or with one --COOH group and two --NCS groups in more basic conditions.

Optimizing protic ionic liquid electrolyte for pre-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene supercapacitor electrodes

Electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) are of increasing importance in energy storage from renewable sources. The properties of the electrode and electrolyte materials influence the energy and power densities of EDLCs. We examined the specific capacitance and ion dynamics of a protic ionic liquid confined in pre-intercalated Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene. Our electrochemical measurements demonstrated that the creation of a protic ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-H-imidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (BuIMH-NTf2), using a mixture of ionic liquid, 1-butyl imidazole (BuIM), and salt, bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (HNTf2), in a ratio of 0.8:0.2 led to the optimal capacitance. Remarkably, quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements revealed increased particle mobility at this composition, attributed to the more efficient accumulation of BuIMH + on the electrode surface. This deposit of additional ions results in fewer BuIM molecules away from the surface, enhancing their mobility due to reduced crowding. This composition-dependent electrochemical behavior will guide the formulation of more efficient protic ionic liquid systems, enabling faster ion transport in energy storage devices.

Molecular dynamics simulations of uranyl and plutonyl cations in a task-specific ionic liquid

Ionic liquids (ILs) are a unique class of solvents with potential applications in advanced separation technologies relevant to the nuclear industry. ILs are salts with low melting points and a wide range of tunable physical properties, such as viscosity, hydrophobiciy, conductivity, and liquidus range. ILs have negligible vapor pressure, are often non-flammable, and can have high thermal stability and a wide electrochemical window, making them attractive for use in separations processes relevant to the nuclear industry. Metal salts generally have a low solubility in ILs; however, by incorporating new functional groups into the IL cation or anion that promote complexation with the metal, the solubility can be greatly increased. One such task-specific ionic liquid (TSIL) is 1-carboxy-N, N, N-trimethylglycine bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Hbet][Tf 2 N]). Water, which is detrimental for electrochemical separations, is a common impurity in ILs and can coordinate with actinyl cations, particularly in ILs containing only weakly coordinating components. Understanding the behavior of actinides in TSIL/water mixtures on a molecular level is vital for designing improved separations processes. Classical molecular dynamics simulations of uranyl(VI) and plutonyl(VI) in 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][Tf 2 N]) with deprotonated Hbet (betaine) and water have been performed to understand the coordination and dynamics of the actinyl cations. We find that betaine is a much stronger ligand than water and prefers to coordinate the metal in a bidentate manner. Potential of mean force simulations yield a relative free energy for betaine coordination of approximately -120 to -90 kJ/mol in mixtures with water. As the amount of betaine coordinated to the actinide increases, the diffusion coefficient of the actinyl cation decreases. Moreover, the betaine ligand is able to bridge between two metal centers, resulting in dimeric complexes with actinide–actinide distances of ~5 Å. Potential of mean force simulations show that these structures are stable, with relative free energies of up to -40 kJ/mol. The crystal structure for [(UO 2 ) 2 (bet) 6 (H 2 O) 2 ][Tf 2 N] 4 shows that the betaine bridges between two uranium atoms to form dimeric complexes similar to those found in our simulations.
