Disruption of Dark Matter Minihalos in the Milky Way Environment: Implications for Axion Miniclusters and Early Matter Domination

Many theories of dark matter beyond the weakly interacting massive particles paradigm feature an enhanced matter power spectrum on subparsec scales, leading to the formation of dense dark matter minihalos. Future local observations are promising to search for and constrain such substructures. The survival probability of these dense minihalos in the Milky Way environment is crucial for interpreting local observations. In this work, we investigate two environmental effects: stellar disruption and (smooth) tidal disruption. These two mechanisms are studied using semianalytic models and idealized N-body simulations. For stellar disruption, we perform a series of N-body simulations of isolated minihalo–star encounters to test and calibrate analytic models of stellar encounters before applying the model to the realistic Milky Way disk environment. For tidal disruption, we perform N-body simulations to confirm the effectiveness of the analytic treatment. Finally, we propose a framework to combine the hierarchical assembly and infall of minihalos to the Milky Way with the late-time disruption mechanisms. We make predictions for the mass functions of minihalos in the Milky Way. The mass survival fraction (at M$_{mh}$ ≥ 10$^{−12}$M$_{⊙}$) of dense dark matter minihalos, e.g., for axion miniclusters and minihalos from early matter domination, is ∼60% with the relatively low-mass, compact population surviving. The survival fraction is insensitive to the detailed model parameters. We discuss various implications of the framework and future direct detection prospects.

Design and performance of a multi-terahertz Fourier transform spectrometer for axion dark matter experiments

Dedicated spectrometers for terahertz radiation with [0.3, 30] THz frequencies using traditional optomechanical interferometry are substantially less common than their infrared and microwave counterparts. This paper presents the design and initial performance measurements of a tabletop Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) for multi-terahertz radiation using infrared optics in a Michelson arrangement. This is coupled to a broadband pyroelectric photodetector designed for [0.1, 30] THz frequencies. We measure spectra of narrowband and broadband input radiation to characterize the performance of this instrument above 10 THz, where signal-to-noise is high. This paves the groundwork for planned upgrades to extend below 10 THz. We also briefly discuss potential astroparticle physics applications of such FTS instruments to broadband axion dark matter searches, whose signature comprises low-rate monochromatic photons with unknown frequency.

Structure Formation Limits on Axion-Like Dark Matter

We derive structure formation limits on dark matter (DM) composed of keV-scale axion-like particles (ALPs), produced via freeze-in through the interactions with photons and Standard Model (SM) fermions. We employ Lyman-alpha (Ly-α) forest data sets as well as the observed number of Milky Way (MW) subhalos. We compare results obtained using Maxwell-Boltzmann and quantum statistics for describing the SM bath. It should be emphasized that the presence of logarithmic divergences complicates the calculation of the production rate, which can not be parameterized with a simple power law behaviour. The obtained results, in combination with X-ray bounds, exclude the possibility for a photophilic “frozen-in” ALP DM with mass below ~ 19. For the photophobic ALP scenario, in which DM couples primarily to SM fermions, the ALP DM distribution function is peaked at somewhat lower momentum and hence for such realization we find weaker limits on DM mass. Future facilities, such as the upcoming Vera C. Rubin observatory, will provide measurements with which the current bounds can be significantly improved to ~ 80.

Axion-like particle at the 10 GeV scale: Higgs decays to wide jets and photons

If axion-like particles (ALPs) exist, they may have renormalizable couplings only to the Higgs boson ($h^0$) or to fields beyond the Standard Model. An ALP $A_h$ lighter than about 60 GeV would allow the $h^0 \to A_h A_h$ decay, with a branching fraction determined by the explicit global symmetry breaking responsible for the main contributions to the $A_h$ mass ($M_A$). New heavy fields that carry color and electric charge, such as squarks, can mediate $A_h$ decays at one loop mostly into gluons, but also into photons. Exploring LHC sensitivity to $A_h$, we show that the $h^0 \to A_h A_h \to (gg)(γγ)$ channel leads to a diphoton resonance at $M_A$ whose production rate is consistent with a $3.5σ$ excess reported by a CMS search at $M_A \approx 13.6$ GeV. For $M_A$ of order 10 GeV, the $h^0 \to A_h A_h \to 4g$ cascade decay leads to two wide jets (each with 2-prong substructure) that form a resonance at 125 GeV.

GALILEO: Galactic Axion Laser Interferometer Leveraging Electro-Optics

We propose a novel experimental method for probing light dark matter candidates. We show that an electro-optical material’s refractive index is modified in the presence of a coherently oscillating dark matter background. A high-precision resonant Michelson interferometer can be used to read out this signal. The proposed detection scheme allows for the exploration of an uncharted parameter space of dark matter candidates over a wide range of masses—including masses exceeding a few tens of microelectronvolts, which is a challenging parameter space for microwave cavity haloscopes. Induced axion-phason field in Weyl semimetals

Here, the Weyl semimetal in a constant magnetic field is investigated with the ground state for the lowest (n = 0) Landau levels corresponding to spin-down (σ 3 = -1). In the presence of an electron-phonon coupling in the ground state, an attractive interaction for the polarized spin and opposite chirality is generated. A two-body attractive interaction projected to the two lowest (n = 0) chiral Landau levels with the same spin polarization is obtained. The higher Landau level states (n ≠ 0) are treated at the one-loop approximation with the two chiralities containing spins polarized as σ 3 = ± 1. Using the chiral anomaly in one dimension we show that the sliding phase is controlled by the electric field. This theory, for a Weyl semimetal with two nodes in the direction of the applied magnetic field, gives rise to a sliding charge density wave observed by Gooth et al. [Nature (London) 575, 315 (2019)].
