Parametric Study of Factors that Affect Calculated Dose from TRISO Fueled Microreactor Transportation Accident

Microreactors are very small nuclear reactors with a power output up to 50 megawatts electric (MWe) which also meet the standards of an “advanced nuclear reactor.” Microreactors are designed to be factory-built, modular in nature, and may be transportable. These compact small-sized reactors in some design configurations are small enough to be transported by truck which could help solve certain energy challenges. This report refers to these reactors as transportable microreactors or transportable nuclear power plants (TNPPs). Transportable microreactors are being considered for a wide range of independent operation applications.

Health effects of Radiation and Radioactivity + Historic Nuclear Accidents

The safety of nuclear energy technology goes hand in hand with a modern understanding of the health impacts and required precautions associated with radiation. This is because nuclear power plants require fuel sources like uranium, which is an element that is naturally radioactive.

Experimental Studies of the Dynamics of Adsorbed and Condensed Phase Iodine Species Formed in Severe Reactor Accidents (Final Project Report)

We have studied the chemical transformations of semi-volatile organic iodide species (RI) in the condensed phase as well as adsorbed onto the surfaces of environmentally relevant particles, e.g., soot (carbon) and dust (silica) under real-world conditions. The combination of chosen experimental methods provide a molecular-level insight into the chemical dynamics of organic iodides. Throughout this project, we have developed new experimental, quantum chemistry, and data analysis capabilities. All experimental work was performed with 127 I.

Experiment Logistics for an International Blind Intercomparison Exercise for Nuclear Accident Dosimetry at the Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute's TRIGA Reactor

This document is the Experimental Set-up and Design (CED-3a) Report for IER-602, “Dosimetry Exercise with Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) - Exercise” The report discusses the structure of the exercise consisting of three reactor exposures, identifying the participating laboratories and their points of contact. The report also includes details of all dosimetry each laboratory will submit to be placed in proximity to AFRRI on aluminum plates or BOMAB phantoms. Each laboratory lists the counting and spectroscopy equipment to be utilized at AFFRI. The exercise is tentatively scheduled for one week in June, 2024 (FY24 Q4).

FY25 Report on Water NSTF Testing: Parametric and Accident Testing with Lower Tank Inlet

The Natural Convection Shutdown Heat Removal Test Facility (NSTF) at Argonne National Laboratory has continued to generate empirical validation data on the performance of water-based reactor cavity cooling system (RCCS) for seven years. This data is actively being used to support the development of passive decay heat removal systems for advanced reactors. Distinguishing this facility are 1) the large, ½ scale of the facility and 2) its governance under an NQA-1 qualified program for producing data of the highest pedigree for advanced reactor designers and regulators. In addition to the experimental activities discussed in this report, a computational modeling program continues to support the experimental program and further accuracy and understanding of the computational models. Together, the experimental and computational work create a mutually beneficial relationship integral to the overall program objective of advancing the understanding of the RCCS technology.
