Applying colloidal silica suspensions injection and sequential gelation to block vertical water flow in well annulus: laboratory testing on rheology, gelation, and injection

We evaluated the application of silica suspension injection and sequential gelation to block vertical water flow in the annuli of long-screened wells. First, we studied the viscosity, rheological behavior, and gelation performance of colloidal silica suspensions in batch tests. Then, we tested the injection of silica suspensions and the water flow blocking efficiency of the later formed silica gel in column and bench-scale sandbox experiments. Micron-sized fumed powder silica suspensions and nanosized silica suspensions recovered from geothermal fluids were tested in this work. Fumed silica suspensions showed shear thinning, while nanosized silica suspensions exhibited Newtonian flow behavior. During the gelation process, the nanosized silica suspension changed from a Newtonian fluid to a shear thinning fluid while increasing its overall viscosity. At comparable concentrations, the nanosized silica suspensions have much lower viscosity than that of the fumed silica suspensions. Increases in the Na + concentration and silica particle concentration in these suspensions shortened the gelation time. Silica suspension gelation in sand columns completely blocked the water flow and sustained the injection pressure up to 50 psig (344.7 kPa). A silica suspension was successfully injected into the target zone in the annulus of a bench-scale sandbox mimicking long-screened wells in the field. The silica gel formed in the annulus effectively blocked chemical transport through the gelled zone. Our research reveals that a process using silica suspension injection and sequential gelation technology is promising for blocking the vertical water flow and chemical transport through the filter pack in targeted zones within the annulus of long-screened well systems.

High Efficiency Inverted GaAs and GaInP/GaAs Solar Cells With Strain-Balanced GaInAs/GaAsP Quantum Wells

High-efficiency solar cells are essential for high-density terrestrial applications, as well as space and potentially vehicle applications. The optimum bandgap for the terrestrial spectrum lies beyond the absorption range of a traditional dual junction GaInP/GaAs cell, with the bottom GaAs cell having higher bandgap energy than necessary. Lower energy bandgaps can be achieved with multiple quantum wells (QWs), but such a pathway requires advanced management of the epitaxial growth conditions in order to be useful. Strain-balanced GaAsP/GaInAs QWs are incorporated into a single junction GaAs solar cell and a dual junction GaInP/GaAs solar cell, leading to 27.2% efficiency in the single junction device and a one-sun record 32.9% efficiency in the tandem device. Good carrier collection and low non-radiative recombination are observed in the cells with up to 80 QWs. The GaAs cells employ a rear-heterojunction architecture to boost the open-circuit voltage to over 1.04 V in the quantum well device, despite the large number of QWs.

Modeling the corrosion of steel casing and the damage of well cement in a borehole system

This work presents the effect of chloride-induced corrosion in an underground borehole system, specifically considering the steel casing and further damage to the surrounding cement. In the past four decades, oil well cement has been successfully used for underground construction. However, high concentrations of chloride ions gradually degrade the functionality and durability of well cement. Gasses and liquids can leak from deterioration caused by chloride ions, and thus motivate this study. The chemo-mechanical coupling diffusion model and a classical fracture mechanics model are applied. The model is validated with OPC concrete corrosion data from literature, and then applied to well cement using experimentally obtained material property data. The time when crack initiation, peak pressure, and complete fracture is reached in the model of the cement sheath provides a quantification of the expected service life of the borehole system.

Numerical simulation of gas production from natural gas hydrate deposits with multi-branch wells: Influence of reservoir properties

Vast amounts of natural gas hydrate are buried in subseafloor sediments without impermeable boundaries, which is recognized as an essential energy source for the future. Previously, the multi-branch well was proposed to enhance the recovery efficiency of natural gas hydrate, and the gas production rate has been dramatically improved comparing with the vertical well. However, the multi-branch well shows a terrible performance in gas production duration. Here, as a continuation of the previous study, numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the influence of hydrate reservoir properties on the gas production potential. Results indicate that it is hard to extract hydrate commercially for hydrate accumulations without impermeable boundaries. A high initial hydrate saturation leads to a long gas production duration but a low gas production rate. An increase in the intrinsic permeability of isotropic reservoirs would shorten the gas production duration and result in a low gas recovery ratio. Permeability anisotropy shows a noticeable effect on enhancing the gas recovery ratio and the gas production duration due to the improved pressure propagation pattern. Therefore, in the upcoming field tests, reservoir reconstructions that enhance permeability anisotropy are strongly suggested to obtain better outcomes.

Enabling site-specific well leakage risk estimation during geologic carbon sequestration using a modular deep-learning-based wellbore leakage model

Geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) is a promising technology for mitigating net carbon emissions and growing climate concern by storing CO 2 in reservoirs. Oil and gas brownfields are an attractive option for CO 2 storage, but these sites have many historical wellbores from petroleum production and can be a potential leakage pathway for CO 2 or formation brine. Therefore, risk management of GCS operations requires an assessment of potential well leakage. Due to the high uncertainty of the system, stochastic approaches are ideal for quantifying the range of risk behaviors, but they must be computationally efficient in the face of complex physics. Here, we develop a new physics-centric deep learning wellbore model to predict the leakage of CO 2 and brine through leaky wellbores. Multi-physics numerical simulations were used to generate data sets, and physics-informed features were introduced. Neural networks were optimized with an automated searching algorithm. Feature analysis quantifies the impact of each feature on model prediction and confirms the role of physics-inspired parameters. The model shows high predictive performance across a wide range of geologic and injection conditions and well attributes. In conclusion, a case study illustrates how the model is applied to assess well leakage in GCS operations.

Green-emitting cubic GaN/In 0.16 Ga 0.84 N/GaN quantum well with 32% internal quantum efficiency at room temperature

Structural and optical properties of a green-emitting cubic (i.e., zinc blende) GaN/In 0.16 Ga 0.84 N/GaN single quantum well structure are reported. The active layer is grown on a phase-pure (i.e., 100%) cubic GaN enabled on a 1 × 1 cm 2 U-grooved silicon (100) through aspect ratio phase trapping. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy combined with room temperature cathodoluminescence reveals 522 nm green light emission at room temperature with only 16.0% ± 1.6% of indium content, which is ~30% less than the amount of indium needed in a traditional green-emitting hexagonal (i.e., wurtzite) well. Temperature-dependent behavior of the green emission, such as activation energy, s-shaped peak energy shift, and linewidth, is reported. Cathodoluminescence at 8 and 300 K reveals an internal quantum efficiency of 32.0% ± 0.6%, which is higher than any reported value for cubic wells. Altogether, phase-pure cubic active layers on phase transition cubic GaN are shown to be promising for green and longer wavelength emitters.

Breaking electron pairs in the pseudogap regime of SmTiO 3 − SrTiO 3 − SmTiO 3 quantum wells

The strongly correlated two-dimensional electron liquid within SmTiO 3 /SrTiO 3 /SmTiO 3 quantum well structures exhibits a pseudogap phase when the quantum well width is sufficiently narrow. Using low-temperature transport and optical experiments that drive the quantum-well system out of equilibrium, we find evidence of mobile, long-lived, negatively charged quasiparticles, consistent with the idea that the pseudogap phase arises from strongly bound electron pairs. As a result, these experimental results establish a connection between quantum confinement and enhanced electron pairing, which may provide a pathway to higher-temperature superconductors.
