Voltage regulator/amplifier is self-regulated

Signal modulated, self-regulating voltage regulator/amplifier controls the output b-plus voltage in modulated regulator systems. It uses self-oscillation with feedback to a control circuit with a discontinuous amplitude action feedback loop.

Voltage regulator with multiple parallel power source sections

Voltage regulator provides improved voltage-regulating system in which power dissipation and consequent heat generation are minimized. Each power source section is controlled sequentially so that only one operates in a linear range at a time.

Improved high voltage insulator for use in vacuum

High voltage insulator for electron bombardment ion thruster has electric field directed through dielectric material and electrons emitted by field emission are constrained in negative junction region. Surface flashover and unstable operation are eliminated, and maximum voltage is limited only by dielectric strength of material, aluminum oxide in this case.

Computer controlled performance mapping of thermionic converters: effect of collector, guard-ring potential imbalances on the observed collector current-density, voltage characteristics and limited range performance map of an etched-rhenium, niobium planar converter

The effect of collector, guard-ring potential imbalance on the observed collector-current-density J, collector-to-emitter voltage V characteristic was evaluated in a planar, fixed-space, guard-ringed thermionic converter. The J,V characteristic was swept in a period of 15 msec by a variable load. A computerized data acquisition system recorded test parameters. The results indicate minimal distortion of the J,V curve in the power output quadrant for the nominal guard-ring circuit configuration. Considerable distortion, along with a lowering of the ignited-mode striking voltage, was observed for the configuration with the emitter shorted to the guard ring. A limited-range performance map of an etched-rhenium, niobium, planar converter was obtained by using an improved computer program for the data acquisition system.

Multi-phase, 2-kilowatt, high-voltage, regulated power supply.

Development of a flight configured experimental power supply delivering 2 kw of conditioned power represents a concentrated effort at advancing the state-of-the-art in high voltage power supplies for space application. The power supply described herein was designed for use with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) 20 cm Mercury Ion Thruster. However, its modularized design philosophy allows adaptation to various high voltage, high power requirements. Areas of principal concern are design of power and control circuits, performance parameters, packaging, efficiency, and weight.

High voltage pulse ignition of mercury discharge hollow cathodes

A high voltage pulse generated by a capacitor discharge into a step-up transformer has been demonstrated capable of consistently igniting hollow cathode mercury discharges at propellant flows and heater power levels much below those required by conventional cathode starting. Results are presented for 3.2-mm diameter enclosed and open keeper cathodes. Starting characteristics are shown to depend on keeper voltage, mercury flow rate, heater power, keeper orifice size, emissive materials, and electrode to which the pulse is applied. This starting technique has been used to start a cathode over 10,000 times without any degradation of starting capability.

Induction motor control system with voltage controlled oscillator circuit

A voltage controlled oscillator circuit is reported in which there are employed first and second differential amplifiers. The first differential amplifier, being employed as an integrator, develops equal and opposite slopes proportional to an input voltage, and the second differential amplifier functions as a comparator to detect equal amplitude positive and negative selected limits and provides switching signals which gate a transistor switch. The integrating differential amplifier is switched between charging and discharging modes to provide an output of the first differential amplifier which upon the application of wave shaping provides a substantially sinusoidal output signal. A two phased version with a second integrator provides a second 90 deg phase shifted output for induction motor control.

Concept for a high voltage solar array with integral power conditioning.

Description of a general case solution that synthesizes a high voltage solar array system from a switchable building block concept which makes possible system optimization for specific load requirements. A specific optimized solution is demonstrated, with performance estimates relating array area, weight, and power. Significant technology problems peculiar to a high-voltage switchable solar array design are discussed, along with special requirements anticipated during a hardware development effort.
