Simulation-Based Validation of An Open-Source, Scalable Framework for Building Energy Management in Small and Medium-Sized Commercial Buildings

Abstract: Small and medium-sized commercial buildings (SMCBs) represent 94% of U.S. commercial buildings but encounter substantial obstacles in adopting Building Energy Management (BEM) systems. Current approaches exhibit fundamental limitations: vendor-specific API platforms restrict interoperability through proprietary ecosystems; commercial automation software demands extensive technical expertise and licensing costs; open-source IoT solutions lack native support for building automation protocols and semantic models. This paper introduces a configuration-driven web interface framework addressing the gap between smart device advancements and accessible BEM software infrastructure for SMCBs. The framework leverages VOLTTRON middleware integrated with an automated converter that processes unified YAML configurations into heterogeneous system files, reducing required configuration artifacts from six separate files to a single unified specification. The system architecture enables vendor-agnostic operation through BACnet and Modbus protocols while supporting semantic building model integration via automated Brick Schema parsing. Configuration-driven interfaces automatically adapt to diverse HVAC types without custom development. Simulation-based validation using BOPTEST demonstrates automatic interface generation between fan coil and hydronic systems, with the automated converter successfully generating all platform-specific outputs from the single YAML input. The result demonstrates the framework's capability to streamline BEM system deployment through reduced configuration complexity. This work bridges simulation capabilities with operational deployment, demonstrating how virtual testbeds validate generalizable software frameworks for real-world building automation.

Studying the hadron structure with PANDA and CLAS using machine learning techniques

The hadron spectroscopy and structure are currently very active fields of research to study the non-perturbative regime of quantum chronodynamics. The first one studies the complex structure of excited hadrons by looking at their decay products, while the latter uses lepton scattering on nucleons. Both methods require reconstruction algorithms with great efficiency and good particle identification and background rejection rates. This work aims to provide these by either improving the existing methods or developing new ones. The first part of this document presents a feasibility study of a predicted hybrid charmonium state for the PANDA experiment. Lattice QCD calculations predict the ground state hybrid charmonium to be a spin exotic with quantum numbers of JP C = 1?+ at a mass of around 4.3 GeV with a width to be around 20 MeV. A machine learning based data analysis scheme is proposed to further improve the signal efficiency and the background reduction, alongside with improvements of the analysis software (PandaRoot), that are vital for this study. These improvements include a reworked clustering algorithm for the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMC) and an optimized monte carlo matching for neutral particles. The second part of this document is about studying the proton structure. A multidimensional study of the structure function ratio Fsin(?)LU /FUU has been performed for K±, based on the measurement of beam-spin asymmetries. It uses the high statistics data recorded with the CLAS12 spectrometer at Jefferson Laboratory. Fsin(?)LU is a twist-3 quantity that provides information about the quark gluon correlations in the proton. This document will present for the first time a simultaneous analysis of two kaon channels over a large kinematic range of z, xB , PT and Q2 with virtualities Q2 ranging from 1 GeV2 up to 8 GeV2 using machine learning techniques for improved particle identification.

Extension of Virtual Test Bed Advanced Modeling and Simulation Capabilities for Fusion Energy

The National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) was established to accelerate the deployment of novel reactor concepts. This is achieved by providing physical and virtual spaces for building and testing reactor experiments. The Virtual Test Bed (VTB) represents the virtual counterpart to the physical test beds. It is a collaboration with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program with the mission to accelerate the deployment of advanced reactors by facilitating the adoption of advanced modeling and simulation (M&S) tools developed by the DOE. This mission has been carried out by the VTB since 2020 by hosting and featuring dozens of advanced fission nuclear reactor models developed by national laboratories and academia. The charter of the NRIC’s definition of advanced reactors also includes fusion nuclear reactors. As the tools developed by the NEAMS program are increasingly used for modeling fusion energy devices, there is an increasing need to host fusion reactor models on the VTB repository. The VTB will be extended in 2024 to support fusion energy modeling and simulation.

Development and Porting of Nuclear Reactor Computational Models for the NRIC Virtual Test Bed in FY23

The U.S. DOE’s National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) hosts an open-source website and associated GitHub repository called the Virtual Test Bed (VTB) on which computational models for advanced reactors are documented and shared with the reactor community. In FY23 under the NRIC program, computational models for nuclear reactor analysis were developed and contributed to the VTB Github repository during FY23 by contributors at Argonne National Laboratory. Other models developed outside of NRIC were also ported to the VTB as part of this work, serving a broader mission to make computational reactor analysis models more widely available to the reactor community. The model development activities focused on demonstration of gas-cooled microreactor models including computational fluid dynamics simulations of flow through an industry-inspired air jacket design, and simulation of multiphysics transients for a gas-cooled microreactor assembly. Additionally, development of a molten salt reactor (led at Idaho National Laboratory) was supported through Argonne’s expertise in multigroup cross sections generation. Models for these two reactor types were targeted due to their relevancy to NRIC’s Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) and Laboratory for Operation and Testing in the U.S. (LOTUS) physical test beds, which are slated to host microreactor and molten salt reactor experiments. The model porting activities consisted of developing detailed documentation for several physics models which originate from the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling and Simulation (NEAMS) program. We include only contributions from Argonne National Laboratory in this report.

Update on Radiochemical Assessment of High Burnup Commercially Irradiated Fuel

This work documents an effort to collect burnup measurements on a high burnup rod, designated 6XV, and first cycle accident tolerant fuel (ATF) rod, designated 47I, to enable benchmarking of fuel performance codes and neutronics codes. In addition to measurements, Virtual Environment for Reactor Applications (VERA) full-core-depletion analysis was also performed for the rods that were experimentally analyzed to provide an opportunity for code validation. This effort focuses on collecting data from rods irradiated at Byron Generating Station and shipped to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) hot-cells. This data will also anchor non-destructive examination evaluations of burnup of the various fuel rods undergoing postirradiation examination (PIE) at ORNL. Previous PIE of these fuel rods provides some guidance on the burnup trend across the fuel. Axial gamma spectroscopy scans provide a measure of relative changes in burnup across a fuel pin. Mass spectrometry based burnup measurements performed for this work at specific axial locations in the fuel are fully quantitative. By combining the mass spectrometry data with the gamma scans it is possible to more quantitatively evaluate axial variations in burnup across the entire fuel pin [1]. The combined set of burnup evaluations will be made available to other organizations that have an interest in high burnup radiochemistry data for validation of neutronic simulations and source term evaluation such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

VAIM-CFF: a variational autoencoder inverse mapper solution to Compton form factor extraction from deeply virtual exclusive reactions

We develop a new methodology for extracting Compton form factors (CFFs) from deeply virtual exclusive reactions such as the unpolarized DVCS cross section using a specialized inverse problem solver, a variational autoencoder inverse mapper (VAIM). The VAIM-CFF framework not only allows us access to a fitted solution set possibly containing multiple solutions in the extraction of all 8 CFFs from a single cross section measurement, but also accesses the lost information contained in the forward mapping from CFFs to cross section. We investigate various assumptions and their effects on the predicted CFFs such as cross section organization, number of extracted CFFs, use of uncertainty quantification technique, and inclusion of prior physics information. We then use dimensionality reduction techniques such as principal component analysis to visualize the missing physics information tracked in the latent space of the VAIM framework. Through re-framing the extraction of CFFs as an inverse problem, we gain access to fundamental properties of the problem not comprehensible in standard fitting methodologies: exploring the limits of the information encoded in deeply virtual exclusive experiments.

Gap Assessment on Sensors and Instrumentation for Advanced Reactors

The Sensor Technologies for Advanced Reactors Virtual Workshop—sponsored by the Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN), the Electric Power Research Institute, and the Nuclear Energy Institute—was held to exchange information on sensors and sensor technologies of interest to advanced nuclear technology developers, commercial instrument suppliers, and sensor researchers from Department of Energy (DOE) national laboratories, universities, and industry. The workshop objectives were to discuss measurement requirements and sensor needs for advanced reactor concepts, understand current national laboratory capabilities and accelerated development approaches for sensors and instrumentation, and identify gaps so as to inform applicable DOE Office of Nuclear Energy (DOE-NE) research programs. Due to the complexity of holding group discussions on individual gaps, a survey was sent to workshop participants, and personalized one-on-one feedback sessions were held to elicit additional information. Summaries of these sessions are provided in this gap assessment report.

A goldilocks computational protocol for inhibitor discovery targeting DNA damage responses including replication-repair functions

While many researchers can design knockdown and knockout methodologies to remove a gene product, this is mainly untrue for new chemical inhibitor designs that empower multifunctional DNA Damage Response (DDR) networks. Here, we present a robust Goldilocks (GL) computational discovery protocol to efficiently innovate inhibitor tools and preclinical drug candidates for cellular and structural biologists without requiring extensive virtual screen (VS) and chemical synthesis expertise. By computationally targeting DDR replication and repair proteins, we exemplify the identification of DDR target sites and compounds to probe cancer biology. Our GL pipeline integrates experimental and predicted structures to efficiently discover leads, allowing early-structure and early-testing (ESET) experiments by many laboratories. By employing an efficient VS protocol to examine protein-protein interfaces (PPIs) and allosteric interactions, we identify ligand binding sites beyond active sites, leveraging in silico advances for molecular docking and modeling to screen PPIs and multiple targets. A diverse 3,174 compound ESET library combines Diamond Light Source DSI-poised, Protein Data Bank fragments, and FDA-approved drugs to span relevant chemotypes and facilitate downstream hit evaluation efficiency for academic laboratories. Two VS per library and multiple ranked ligand binding poses enable target testing for several DDR targets. This GL library and protocol can thus strategically probe multiple DDR network targets and identify readily available compounds for early structural and activity testing to overcome bottlenecks that can limit timely breakthrough drug discoveries. By testing accessible compounds to dissect multi-functional DDRs and suggesting inhibitor mechanisms from initial docking, the GL approach may enable more groups to help accelerate discovery, suggest new sites and compounds for challenging targets including emerging biothreats and advance cancer biology for future precision medicine clinical trials.

Optimizing on-ramp merging for connected and automated vehicles: A hierarchical approach using deep reinforcement learning and optimal control

On-ramp merging for Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) presents significant challenges in dynamic traffic environments. Traditional methods and recent learning-based approaches often fail to simultaneously address decision-making complexity and execution precision under fluctuating conditions. This study introduces a novel hierarchical framework that combines: (1) a high-level Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) module that coordinates merging sequences through Virtual Traffic Signals (VTS) with Yield/Green phases and (2) a low-level optimal controller generating collision-free speed trajectories via pseudospectral convex optimization. A convolutional autoencoder compresses high-dimensional traffic states to enhance responsiveness. Extensive simulations demonstrate a 12.5% improvement in mainline throughput a 28% reduction in emergency braking events, and 31.66% lower fuel consumption compared to baseline methods. Furthermore, the framework’s effectiveness in coordinating CAV merges highlights its potential for real-world deployment. Future work will extend validation to multi-lane scenarios with mixed traffic and large-scale multiple merging points.
