Pulmonary function in space

The lung is exquisitely sensitive to gravity, and so it is of interest to know how its function is altered in the weightlessness of space. Studies on National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Spacelabs during the last 4 years have provided the first comprehensive data on the extensive changes in pulmonary function that occur in sustained microgravity. Measurements of pulmonary function were made on astronauts during space shuttle flights lasting 9 and 14 days and were compared with extensive ground-based measurements before and after the flights. Compared with preflight measurements, cardiac output increased by 18% during space flight, and stroke volume increased by 46%. Paradoxically, the increase in stroke volume occurred in the face of reductions in central venous pressure and circulating blood volume. Diffusing capacity increased by 28%, and the increase in the diffusing capacity of the alveolar membrane was unexpectedly large based on findings in normal gravity. The change in the alveolar membrane may reflect the effects of uniform filling of the pulmonary capillary bed. Distributions of blood flow and ventilation throughout the lung were more uniform in space, but some unevenness remained, indicating the importance of nongravitational factors. A surprising finding was that airway closing volume was approximately the same in microgravity and in normal gravity, emphasizing the importance of mechanical properties of the airways in determining whether they close. Residual volume was unexpectedly reduced by 18% in microgravity, possibly because of uniform alveolar expansion. The findings indicate that pulmonary function is greatly altered in microgravity, but none of the changes observed so far will apparently limit long-term space flight. In addition, the data help to clarify how gravity affects pulmonary function in the normal gravity environment on Earth.

A Study of Preliminary Design Methods for Low Noise Fans

Engineers need theory and computer codes to help them design quiet and efficient fans. A fast method to identify low-noise stator vane counts that might minimize tone noise for axial ducted fans has been developed. The analysis begins with a preliminary aerodynamic fan design. Duct acoustic and rotor-stator interaction theories are combined to predict the set of cut-on circumferential modes that are expected to be generated and propagate through the fan duct. By predicting the number of cut-on circumferential modes for each vane count, a set of low-noise vane counts for a given rotor and duct design can be identified. This method was used to design the stator set for NASA’s spacecraft cabin ventilation fan, in order to minimize tone noise generated by rotor-stator interaction at the first three blade passing frequency harmonics. This method was also applied to three other research fans that NASA uses for aeroacoustics research for comparison. This technique can be used to include acoustic design criteria early in the design of an axial fan and provide valuable information to guide the final design of quiet fans.

Weldable aluminum alloy has improved mechanical properties

Weldable aluminum alloy has good resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, shows unchanged strength and formability after storage at room temperature, and can be pre-aged, stretched, and aged. Since toxic fumes of cadmium oxide are evolved when the new alloy is welded, adequate ventilation must be provided.

Large seals fabricated from small segments reduce procurement lead time

Large diameter seals are fabricated from narrow strip stock welded in segments to form a complete ring. This technique could be used to reduce the cost of critical, large diameter seals in the heating and ventilating industry, petrochemical industry, and marine fabrication industry.

Modified faceplate assembly for stud-welding gun

Ventilated barrel assembly aids installation of studs on narrow uneven weld lands. The modified faceplate permits proper aligning of the percussion stud-welding gun in any position and on a smaller surface, and it maintains gap setting without any other adjustment.

Experimental system for the control of surgically induced infections

The development tests to be performed on the experimental system are described in detail. The test equipment, conditions, and procedures are given. The portable clean room tests include assembly, collapsability, portability, and storage; laminar flow rate; static pressure; air flow pattern; and electrostatic buildup. The other tests are on the ventilation system, human factors evaluation, electrical subsystem, and material compatibility.

Experimental system for the control of surgically induced infections, operating and maintenance instructions D203613-004

An experimental portable system used to control surgically induced infections is described. The system consists of a portable clean room comprised of a laminar flow filter system consistent with Federal standards; a helmet-shoulder pad assembly; a communication system; a helmet ventilation system; a transparent walled enclosure; and surgical gowns. Guidelines for the set up and operation of such equipment are given along with corrective steps to use in case of system malfunctions. Cleaning procedures, maintenance requirements, and disassembly and transfer particulars are included.

Tolerance to external breathing resistance with particular reference to high inspiratory resistance

The ability of men to exercise while breathing through graded inspiratory resistances was studied in order to define acceptable respiratory mouthpiece assembly standards. Experimental results with subjects wearing breathing masks and walking for 30 min on treadmills were used to calculate expiratory work rates. It is concluded that the airflow must be appropriate to the upper limit of minute ventilation likely to be encountered in the men wearing the apparatus.
