A multiblock/multigrid Euler analysis of a propfan transport with wing-mounted nacelles, including slipstream effects

A multiblock/multigrid computation of the inviscid flow over a wing-mounted propfan transport with propwash is presented. An explicit multistage scheme drives the integral Euler equations to a steady state solution, while an actuator disk approximates the slipstream effects of the propfan blades. Practical applications of detailed surface gridding, multiple block field grids and multigrid convergence acceleration are demonstrated.

Test and analysis results for composite transport fuselage and wing structures

Automated tow placement (ATP) and stitching of dry textile composite preforms followed by resin transfer molding (RTM) are being studied as cost effective manufacturing processes for obtaining damage tolerant fuselage and wing structures for transport aircraft. Data are presented to assess the damage tolerance of ATP and RTM fuselage elements with stitched-on stiffeners from compression tests of impacted three J-stiffened panels and from stiffener pull-off tests. Data are also presented to assess the damage tolerance of RTM wing elements which had stitched skin and stiffeners from impacted single stiffener and three blade stiffened compression tests and stiffener pull-off tests.

Test and analysis results for composite transport fuselage and wing structures

Automated tow placement (ATP) and stitching of dry textile composite preforms followed by resin transfer molding (RTM) are being investigated by researchers at NASA LaRC and Douglas Aircraft Company as cost-effective manufacturing processes for obtaining damage tolerant fuselage and wing structures for transport aircraft. The Douglas work is being performed under a NASA contract entitled 'Innovative Composites Aircraft Primary Structures (ICAPS)'. Data are presented in this paper to assess the damage tolerance of ATP and RTM fuselage elements with stitched-on stiffeners from compression tests of impacted three-J-stiffened panels and from stiffener pull-off tests. Data are also presented to assess the damage tolerance of RTM wing elements which had stitched skin and stiffeners from impacted single stiffener and three blade-stiffened compression tests and stiffener pull-off tests.

Coupled Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis and Species Mass Transport in a Versatile Experimental Salt Irradiation Loop (VESIL) using COBRA-TF

With the resurgence of interest in Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) technology among commercial and governmental agencies, there is a need for new experiments and new modelling capabilities to characterize the unique phenomena present in this fluid fuel system. A Versatile Experimental Salt Irradiation Loop (VESIL) is currently under investigation at Idaho National Laboratory. It is designed to be a dynamic fuel-bearing salt loop placed in the Advanced Test Reactor. One of the key phenomena this proposed experiment plans to elucidate is fission product speciation in the fuel-salt and the subsequent effects this can have on fuel-salt properties, fission product transport and interactions, source term generation, corrosion and redox potential control. Specifically, noble gases (Xe & Kr) will bubble out to a plenum or off-gas system and noble metals (Mo, Tc, Te etc.) will precipitate and deposit in specific zones in the loop. This work extends the mass transfer and species interaction models in the general species transport capability of COBRA-TF (CTF) and applies these models to give a preliminary estimation of fission product behavior in the proposed VESIL design.

System Analysis Modeling and Intermodal Transportation for Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel

This is a technical presentation that does not take into account contractual limitations or obligations under the Standard Contract for Disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel and/or High-Level Radioactive Waste (Standard Contract) (10 CFR Part 961). For example, under the provisions of the Standard Contract, spent nuclear fuel in multi-assembly canisters is not an acceptable waste form, absent a mutually agreed to contract amendment.

Development of a computer technique for the prediction of transport aircraft flight profile sonic boom signatures

A new computer technique for the analysis of transport aircraft sonic boom signature characteristics was developed. This new technique, based on linear theory methods, combines the previously separate equivalent area and F function development with a signature propagation method using a single geometry description. The new technique was implemented in a stand-alone computer program and was incorporated into an aircraft performance analysis program. Through these implementations, both configuration designers and performance analysts are given new capabilities to rapidly analyze an aircraft's sonic boom characteristics throughout the flight envelope.

High Level Gap Analysis for Accident Tolerant and Advanced Fuels for Storage and Transportation

This initial gap analysis considers proposed accident tolerant fuel (ATF) options currently being irradiated in commercial reactors, since these are most likely for future batch implementation. Also, advanced fuel (AF) options that may be likely for use in advanced reactors are considered. The cladding technologies considered were chromium-coated zirconium-based alloys, FeCrAl, and both monolithic and matrix composite Silicide carbide (SiC). The fuel technologies considered were chromium-doped uranium dioxide fuel, uranium alloys, uranium nitride, and uranium silicide. Numerous national labs, industry, and countries are performing significant testing and modeling on these proposed technologies to establish performance, but at this time none of the prototypes being irradiated have achieved end-of-life (EOL) burnup. There are some testing results after one burnup cycle to verify in-reactor performance, but little data beyond that. As the ATF prototypes acquire more burnup, data will be produced that is relevant to storage and transportation. The DOE:NE Spent Fuel and Waste Science and Technology (SWFST) Storage and Transportation (ST) Control Account will evaluate the performance data as it becomes available for application to the identified gaps for ST.

Feasibility model of a high reliability five-year tape transport, volume 2

Analysis of the design features of the modularized tape transport renders a life expectancy in excess of five years. Tests performed on the tape transport were directed toward determining its performance capability. These tests revealed that the tape jitter and skew are in the range achieved by high quality digital tape transports. Guidance of the tape in the lateral sense by the use of the two hybrid crowned rollers proved to be excellent. Tracking was maintained within less than one thousandth inch (approximately 2 micrometers). The guidance capability demonstrated makes possible the achievement of the performance objective of 7.2 x 10 to the 9th power storage capability employing 1500 ft. of one inch wide tape with a packing density of 5,000 bits per inch per track on 80 tracks. Also, the machine showed excellent characteristics operating over a wide range of tape speeds. The basic design concept lends itself to growth and adaptation to a wide range of recorder requirements.

Comparison of distributed acceleration and standard models of cosmic-ray transport

Recent cosmic-ray abundance measurements for elements in the range 3 less than or equal to Z less than or equal to 28 and energies 10 MeV/n less than or equal to E less than or equal to 1 TeV/n have been analyzed with computer transport modeling. About 500 elemental and isotopic measurements have been explored in this analysis. The transport code includes the effects of ionization losses, nuclear spallation reactions (including those of secondaries), all nuclear decay modes, stripping and attachment of electrons, escape from the Galaxy, weak reacceleration and solar modulation. Four models of reacceleration (with several submodels of various reacceleration strengths) were explored. A chi (exp 2) analysis show that the reacceleration models yield at least equally good fits to the data as the standard propagation model. However, with reacceleration, the ad hoc assumptions of the standard model regarding discontinuities in the energy dependence of the mean path length traversed by cosmic rays, and in the momentum spectrum of the cosmic-ray source spectrum are eliminated. Futhermore, the difficulty between rigidity dependent leakage and energy independent anisotropy below energies of 10(exp 14) eV is alleviated.
