Grid Voltage Control Analysis for Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

This paper presents an analysis of grid voltage control strategies for heavy-duty electric vehicle charging stations. The performance of three voltage control approaches—including power factor control, standardized volt-volt ampere reactive (VAR) curve control, and customized volt-VAR curve control—are investigated and evaluated for three different sizes of charging stations, including a single-port charging station, a midsized three-port charging station, and six-port travel center. The charging stations are placed on multiple locations of four different types of distribution systems to obtain a comprehensive performance analysis of the voltage control approaches under different scenarios. To quantitively compare the performance of the three voltage control approaches, a series of metrics are designed to quantify the performance and contribute to the comprehensive analysis.

A Privacy-Preserving Distributed Control of Optimal Power Flow

Here, we consider a distributed optimal power flow formulated as an optimization problem that maximizes a nondifferentiable concave function. Solving such a problem by the existing distributed algorithms can lead to data privacy issues because the solution information exchanged within the algorithms can be utilized by an adversary to infer the data. To preserve data privacy, in this paper we propose a differentially private projected subgradient (DP-PS) algorithm that includes a solution encryption step. We show that a sequence generated by DP-PS converges in expectation, in probability, and with probability 1. Moreover, we show that the rate of convergence in expectation is affected by a target privacy level of DP-PS chosen by the user. We conduct numerical experiments that demonstrate the convergence and data privacy preservation of DP-PS.

A multi-terawatt two-color beam for high-power field-controlled nonlinear optics

Two-color laser beams are instrumental in light-field control and enhancement of high-order harmonic, spectral supercontinuum, and terahertz radiation generated in gases, plasmas, and solids. Here we demonstrate a multi-terawatt two-color beam produced using a relativistic plasma mirror, with 110 mJ at 800 nm and 30 mJ at 400 nm. Both color components have high spatial quality and can be simultaneously focused, provided that the plasma mirror lies within a Rayleigh range of the driving fundamental beam. Favorable scaling of second-harmonic generation by plasma mirrors at relativistic intensities suggests them as an excellent tool for multi-color waveform synthesis beyond the petawatt level.

Mechanical Solutions Scan Report

Power lines, poles, and towers are the backbone of the United States (U.S.) electric-power grid. These transmission and distribution networks route electricity from generator to loads. The characteristics of these routes are rapidly changing -- trending towards decentralized renewable generation, electric heating, vehicle charging, and large data-center loads. Coupled with aging infrastructure and the increased frequency of extreme weather events, there is concern about the future reliability and transmission capacity of conductors and adjacent components. This scan report seeks to provide an overview of mechanical solutions to challenges caused by extreme weather events associated with components of transmission and distribution infrastructure, including conductor heat sag, ice accumulation, wind, and wildfire. Many options could increase transmission capacity or reliability, and these are at various stages of technological readiness. Some have only been lab tested, while some have been widely deployed in the U.S. or overseas for decades. The solution categories and providers featured in this report are intended to be comprehensive at the time of publication and to serve as a reference for decision-makers concerned about transmission and distribution reliability. There are two other categories of large, complex solutions, which are not covered in this report: replacing existing conductors with advanced conductors and implementing digital grid enhancing technologies. A separate scan report titled “Advanced Conductor Scan Report,” which discusses advanced carbon-core conductors, was published by the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in 2023. Information on digital technologies, such as dynamic line ratings, power-flow controllers, and other power electronics and communications-based devices, can be found on the Grid- Enhancing Technologies landing page. Mechanical grid-enhancing technologies, or solutions covered in this report, often do not require full equipment replacement and do not rely on digital components. Mechanical technologies are overlooked because they may be older, simpler, or seemingly “more obvious” than digital or carbon-core technologies. However, it is wise to consider mechanical solutions in a thorough evaluation of grid enhancing technology solutions.

Grid Voltage Control Analysis for Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicle Charging Stations: Preprint

This paper presents an analysis of voltage control strategies for heavy duty electric vehicle (EV) charging stations. The performance of three voltage control approaches including power factor control, preset volt-var curve control, and customized volt-var curve control, have been investigated and evaluated for three different sizes of charging stations, including single-port small charging station, three-port middle size charging station, and 6-port travel center. The charging stations have been placed on various locations of four different types of distribution systems, to obtain a comprehensive performance analysis of the three voltage control approaches under different scenarios. To quantitively compare the performance of the three voltage control approaches, a series of metrics have been designed to quantify the performance and contribute to the comprehensive analysis summary.

Sensitivity and Importance Measure Analyses for Various Design Architectures for High Safety-Significant Safety-Related Digital Instrumentation and Control Systems of Nuclear Power Plants

A transition from analog instrumentation and control (I&C) technologies to digital I&C technologies is taking place for license renewals of existing nuclear power plants and for operating licenses of new advanced reactors. This transition necessitates research on risk and economic assessments of digital I&C technologies to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of vital systems, reduce uncertainty in licensing costs in addition to timeline, support integration of digital I&C systems in the plant, and find the most efficient technology upgrades. Adding redundancy within systems or components is a common means of improving design safety; however, it can also make designs more prone to common-cause failures (CCFs). Introducing diversity into redundant systems or components is a way to mitigate and possibly eliminate CCFs, but it also increases plant complexity and may be costly. The balance between redundancy and diversity remains a challenge for digital I&C systems. This study performs sensitivity and importance analyses for four design architectures of two digital I&C systems—the reactor-trip system and the engineered safety features actuation system. For each system, two architectures are examined, including a redundant, non-diverse configuration and a redundant, diverse configuration. The sensitivity analysis will provide insights on the impact of introducing diversity to system reliability. The importance results will help identify risk-significant and risk-sensitive components and failure modes, which may be good candidates for future design improvement.

Improved PV System Control Strategies to Reduce Power Management Costs in Nanogrids

An improved PV system control method is proposed to reduce nanogrid operation costs in this paper. A model including it various components such as photovoltaic (PV) systems, energy storage systems (ESSs), gateways, and household loads is considered with the constraints of the ESS, PV irradiance from real data, and household load. We designed an optimal economic dispatch strategy with an improved PV system control method. Combining the proposed optimal economic dispatch and PV system control strategies, it can improve the control performance for both transient and steady-state responses thereby enabling the maximum power to be extracted from the PV. Consequently, the PV power is maximized, which allows the ESS to use less power and sell the surplus to external power sources, which means the proposed method decreases the nanogrid operation costs. Furthermore, this performance is verified via nanogrid simulations and PV experimental kit.

Review of Power System Support Functions for Inverter-Based Distributed Energy Resources - Standards, Control Algorithms, and Trends

Penetration of renewable energy in power systems has been increasing in the past decades in response to increased global electricity demand and concerns for the environment. Distributed energy resources (DERs) based on renewables have experienced rapid growth thanks to the incentive programs and broad-based participation. With the growing prevalence of DERs, the risk of grid instability and vulnerability increases due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy. At the same time, the voltage and frequency deviation problems emerge more often when the reverse power flow occurs under supply-demand imbalance in distributed power systems. Standards and grid codes have been issued for DER inverters to interconnect with the distribution grid. The updated standard and grid codes expect DERs to provide a variety of power system support functions in order to incorporate higher DER penetration and to maximize DER value to the grid. This paper provides an overview of the power system support functions from renewable DER inverters, which are categorized as: voltage regulation by active/reactive power control, frequency regulation by active power control, voltage ride-through, and frequency ride-through. The benefits and drawbacks of each algorithm are presented and compared with its predecessor, manifesting the logic in the evolution of the algorithms.
