High resolution ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations in La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3

La 0.7 Ca 0.3 MnO 3 (LCMO30) is a perovskite manganite with a phase transition (T C = 238 K) between a paramagnetic insulator and a ferromagnetic metal. We use single-crystal, inelastic neutron scattering to refine previous work on the low energy (ℏω < 10 meV) magnetic excitations. At 300 K the spectrum consists of a diffusive ferromagnetic component at the pseudo-cubic Brillouin zone center coexisting with a quasielastic excitation located at the pseudo-cubic Brillouin zone edge. Both components are anti-correlated with ferromagnetic long-range order, showing weakened intensity at 215 K in the ferromagnetic phase. Polarized neutron scattering shows both features to be purely magnetic in origin. Furthermore, this indicates the simultaneous presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations (located, respectively, at the zone center and zone edge) in a three-dimensional perovskite, while this coexistence had been previously observed only in a bilayer compound.

Material transport in laser-heated diamond anvil cell melting experiments

A previously undocumented effect in the laser-heated diamond anvil cell, namely, the transport of molten species through the sample chamber, over distances large compared to the laser beam diameter, is presented. This effect is exploited to determine the melting behavior of high-pressure silicate assemblages of olivine composition. At pressures where beta-spinel is the phase melted, relative strengths of partitioning can be estimated for the incompatible elements studied. Iron was found to partition into the melt from beta-spinel less strongly than calcium, and slightly more strongly than manganese. At higher pressures, where a silicate perovskite/magnesiowuestite assemblage is melted, it is determined that silicate perovskite is the liquidus phase, with iron-rich magnesiowuestite accumulating at the end of the laser-melted stripe.

Improved control of atomic layering in perovskite-related homologous series

Homologous series are layered phases that can have a range of stoichiometries depending on an index n. Examples of perovskite-related homologous series include (ABO 3 )nAO Ruddlesden–Popper phases and (Bi 2 O 2 ) (A n-1 B n O 3n+1 ) Aurivillius phases. It is challenging to precisely control n because other members of the homologous series have similar stoichiometry and a phase with the desired n is degenerate in energy with syntactic intergrowths among similar n values; this challenge is amplified as n increases. To improve the ability to synthesize a targeted phase with precise control of the atomic layering, we apply the x-ray diffraction (XRD) approach developed for superlattices of III–V semiconductors to measure minute deviations from the ideal structure so that they can be quantitatively eradicated in subsequent films. We demonstrate the precision of this approach by improving the growth of known Ruddlesden–Popper phases and ultimately, by synthesizing an unprecedented n = 20 Ruddlesden–Popper phase, (ATiO 3 ) 20 AO where the A-site occupancy is Ba 0.6 Sr 0.4 . We demonstrate the generality of this method by applying it to Aurivillius phases and the Bi 2 Sr 2 Ca n–1 Cu n O 2n+4 series of high-temperature superconducting phases.

Two-dimensional perovskite templates for durable, efficient formamidinium perovskite solar cells

We present a design strategy for fabricating ultrastable phase-pure films of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI 3 ) by lattice templating using specific two-dimensional (2D) perovskites with FA as the cage cation. When a pure FAPbI 3 precursor solution is brought in contact with the 2D perovskite, the black phase forms preferentially at 100°C, much lower than the standard FAPbI 3 annealing temperature of 150°C. X-ray diffraction and optical spectroscopy suggest that the resulting FAPbI 3 film compresses slightly to acquire the (011) interplanar distances of the 2D perovskite seed. The 2D-templated bulk FAPbI 3 films exhibited an efficiency of 24.1% in a p-i-n architecture with 0.5–square centimeter active area and an exceptional durability, retaining 97% of their initial efficiency after 1000 hours under 85°C and maximum power point tracking.

Essential role of magnetic frustration in the phase diagrams of doped cobaltites

Doped perovskite cobaltites (e.g., La 1–x Sr x CoO 3 ) have been extensively studied for their spin-state physics, electronic inhomogeneity, and insulator-metal transitions. Ferromagnetically interacting spin-state polarons emerge at low x in the phase diagram of these compounds, eventually yielding long-range ferromagnetism. The onset of long-range ferromagnetism (x≈0.18) is substantially delayed relative to polaron percolation (x≈0.05), however, generating a troubling inconsistency. Here, in this study, Monte Carlo simulations of a disordered classical spin model are used to establish that previously ignored magnetic frustration is responsible for this effect, enabling faithful reproduction of the magnetic phase diagram.

Perovskite-Derived Cs 2 SnCl 6 –Silica Composites as Advanced Waste Forms for Chloride Salt Wastes

Advanced materials and processes are required to separate halides and fission products from complex salt waste streams associated with the chemical reprocessing of used nuclear fuels and molten salt reactor technologies for immobilization into chemically durable waste forms. Here, in this work, we explore an innovative concept using metal-halide perovskites as advanced host phases to incorporate Cs and Cl with very high waste loadings. Wet chemistry-synthesized Cs 2 SnCl 6 powders from CsCl salt solutions are successfully encapsulated into a silica matrix to form a composite using low-temperature spark plasma sintering with tunable Cs and Cl loadings up to 31 wt.% and 26 wt.%, respectively. Chemical durability testing of the composite waste forms by semi-dynamic leaching experiments demonstrates that incongruent leaching mechanism dominated. The metal-halide perovskite-silica composite waste forms display exceptional chemical durability with the long-term release rates of Cs and Cl comparable to or outperforming the state-of-the-art waste form materials but with significantly higher waste loadings. The scalable synthesis of the metal-halide perovskite from wet-chemistry processes opens up new opportunities in designing perovskite-glass composite waste forms for salt wastes with very high waste loadings and exceptional chemical durability for the sustainable development of advanced fuel cycles and next-generation reactor technologies.

Metal Halide Perovskites Demonstrate Radiation Hardness and Defect Healing in Vacuum

Herein, we subject formamidinium lead iodide films to oxygen-containing gases (flowing O 2 or free diffusion of lab atmosphere), inert gases (flowing He, Ar, or N 2 ), and vacuum. Our films are irradiated by Cu Ka X-rays and held at 75 °C while X-ray diffraction is recorded. Under all gas conditions, we observe a reproducible 1.1 ± 0.5 A 3 perovskite lattice contraction from an initial unit cell volume of 256.5 ± 0.8 A 3 concurrent with continuous perovskite loss and lead iodide growth. Oxygen-containing gases increase the reaction rates without materially altering perovskite structural changes. Under the same temperature and irradiation conditions in vacuo, a self-healing reaction is observed, exhibited by a reproducible (0.9 ± 0.3 A 3 ) lattice expansion and stabilization of the perovskite. Furthermore, interactions between the perovskite, defects, and minority phases are simulated by generalized gradient approximation Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (GGA-PBE) density functional theory. Lattice contraction indicates an increase in the concentration of Schottky defects-pairs of formamidinium and iodine vacancies. Under irradiation in every atmospheric condition, a solid solution of Schottky defects with a concentration of several percent diffuses and precipitates forming lead iodide and consuming the defects. In the presence of ionized gases, this framework is modified to include the continual loss of formamidinium and iodine ions from the perovskite forming Schottky defects.

Long-lived photoinduced polar states in metal halide perovskites

Ferroic polarization in hybrid perovskites is crucial for enhancing photovoltaic performance and developing potential electronic applications. Controlling ferroic polarization with an optical field enables probing of ferroic polarization without the unwanted interface ionic effects caused by electronic contacts. This study employs ultrafast near-infrared photoexcitation to control dynamic structural transitions in soft single crystalline hybrid Cu (II) halide perovskites, achieving a long-lived polar state (beyond 104 s) at room temperature. We probe reversible long-lived polar domains under near-infrared photoexcitation using in-situ second harmonic generation microscopy. Theoretical calculation informs the polar lattice microstrain likely induced by anisotropic structure deformation in octahedral copper halide under near-infrared photoexcitation. The reversible slow structure deformation is further confirmed by in-situ photo-induced X-ray diffraction measurement. This work provides a material platform for understanding, controlling, and probing polarization under photoexcitation. Our methodology enables the identification of previously undiscovered polar phases in ferroelectric halide perovskites.

Vapor-Deposited n = 2 Ruddlesden–Popper Interface Layers Aid Charge Carrier Extraction in Perovskite Solar Cells

Interfacial passivation with bulky organic cations such as phenetylammonium iodide has enabled high performance for metal halide perovskite optoelectronic devices. However, the homogeneity of these interfaces and their formation dynamics are poorly understood. Here we study how Ruddlesden-Popper 2D phases form at a 3D perovskite interface when the 2D precursors are introduced via solution or via vapor. When using vapor deposition, we observe uniform coverage of the capping layer and the formation of a predominantly n = 2 Ruddlesden-Popper phase. In contrast, when using solution deposition, we observe the presence of a mixture of n = 2 and n = 1 in the film and the formation of aggregates of the organic cations. As a result of the better phase purity and uniformity, vapor deposition enables higher median solar cell performance with narrower distribution compared to solution-treated films. This study provides fundamental information that the perovskite community can use to better design capping layers to achieve higher charge extraction efficiencies.

Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Co y O 3-δ as facile and tunable oxygen sorbents for chemical looping air separation

Abstract Chemical looping air separation (CLAS) is a promising technology for oxygen generation with high efficiency. The key challenge for CLAS is to design robust oxygen sorbents with suitable redox properties and fast redox kinetics. In this work, perovskite-structured Sr 1-x Ca x Fe 1-y Co y O 3 oxygen sorbents were investigated and demonstrated for oxygen production with tunable redox properties, high redox rate, and excellent thermal/steam stability. Cobalt doping at B site was found to be highly effective, 33% improvement in oxygen productivity was observed at 500 °C. Moreover, it stabilizes the perovskite structure and prevents phase segregation under pressure swing conditions in the presence of steam. Scalable synthesis of Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 oxygen sorbents was carried out through solid state reaction, co-precipitation, and sol-gel methods. Both co-precipitation and sol-gel methods are capable of producing Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 sorbents with satisfactory phase purity, high oxygen capacity, and fast redox kinetics. Large scale evaluation of Sr 0.8 Ca 0.2 Fe 0.4 Co 0.6 O 3 , using an automated CLAS testbed with over 300 g sorbent loading, further demonstrated the effectiveness of the oxygen sorbent to produce 95% pure O 2 with a satisfactory productivity of 0.04 g O2 g sorbent −1 h −1 at 600 °C.

Solar Thermochemical Redox Cycling Using Ga- and Al-Doped LSM Perovskites for Renewable Hydrogen Production

Solar thermochemical hydrogen production using redox-active metal oxides is a promising pathway for the production of green hydrogen and synthetic fuel precursors. Herein, the perovskite material (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 ) 0.95 Mn 0.8 Ga 0.2 O 3–δ (LSMG6482) is identified as a promising metal oxide for thermochemical water splitting. LSMG6482, along with more-established water splitters ceria and (La 0.6 Sr 0.4 ) 0.95 Mn x Al 1–x O 3–δ (LSMA) perovskites, is experimentally characterized via thermogravimetric (TGA) analysis and high-temperature water splitting in a reactor simulating solar concentrating conditions. TGA analysis demonstrated that LSMG6482 has high and stable oxygen exchange capacity under controlled pO 2 redox cycling, demonstrated by large changes in oxygen nonstoichiometry (δ) relative to ceria. Water splitting experiments using laser heating (T red = 1400 °C, T ox = 1200 °C) resulted in H 2 yields of 165.1 μmol g –1 for the candidate LSMG6482 composition, exceeding that of all benchmark materials tested. Under high conversion oxidation conditions, where H 2 is cointroduced with H 2 O (150 ≤ nH 2 O/nH 2 ≤ 500), H 2 yields were greatest for LSMG6482 and LSMA6482, up to four times that of ceria at the highest nH 2 O/nH 2 conditions. Crystallographic analysis showed that over the course of experimentation, there is some secondary phase growth for all perovskite compositions, except for LSMA6482, but there was no observable degradation in H 2 yields.

Structure-Property Relationships and Idiosyncrasies of Bulk, 2D Hybrid Lead Bromide Perovskites

Bulk, 2D hybrid lead bromide perovskites comprise a robust family of halide perovskites with a rich structural and photophysical chemistry witnessed thus far. In an attempt to boost focus on systematically charting the phase space of 2D lead bromide perovskites, it is timely and critical to review the structure-property relationships that are emerging in this family of materials. In this review, we assess the multitude of (100)-orientated lead bromide perovskites, as well as the idiosyncratic (110)-orientated members. We examine the underpopulated phase space of bulk, thick-layer (n>1) lead bromide perovskites, highlighting several examples of structures violating Goldschmidt's tolerance factor with large organic spacers in the cuboctahedral perovskite cages. The narrow and broadband emission is discussed, along with the developed optoelectronic profile of bulk, lead bromide perovskites, as yet. Lastly, we summarize the integration of 2D lead bromide perovskites in optoelectronic devices.

Time- and strain-dependent nanoscale structural degradation in phase change epitaxial strontium ferrite films

Topotactic phase transition between metallic, perovskite SrFeO 3 and insulating, Brownmillerite SrFeO 2.5 has been extensively studied due to the potential applications in resistive switching devices for neuromorphic computing. However, its practical utilization as memristors has been hindered by the structural instability of SrFeO 3 , which is often ascribed to the generation of oxygen vacancies to form SrFeO 3-δ . Here we reveal the dominating defects generated in SrFeO 3 epitaxial thin films are atomic scale gaps as a result of interfacial strain. Our correlated time- and strain-dependent measurements show that tensile strained SrFeO 3 films form vertical, nanoscale gaps that are SrO-rich, which are accountable for the observed metal-to-insulator transition over time. While compressively strained or small lattice mismatched SrFeO 3 films mainly yield horizontal gaps with a smaller impact on the in-plane transport. The atomic scale origin of such defects and their impact on device performance need to be further understood in order to integrate phase change materials in oxide electronics.

Two Spacers, One Perovskite: Integrating Ruddlesden–Popper and Dion–Jacobson Halide Perovskites

Hybrid organic–inorganic perovskites are a rapidly developing class of materials due to their desirable properties for optoelectronic applications such as their ease of synthesis, solution-processable film formation, tunable band gap, strong photoluminescence, good charge carrier mobilities, and high defect tolerance. Here, we present a novel 2D perovskite motif that seamlessly integrates the structural elements from both Ruddlesden–Popper and Dion–Jacobson halide perovskites. We demonstrate the incorporation of two different organic spacer cations in an ordered manner in 5 novel 2D perovskite iodide materials. Both a cyclic diammonium cation 3-(aminomethyl)piperidinium (3AMP) and a linear alkyl monoammonium cation (Cn = C n H 2n+4 N, n = 4–8) are present in distinct alternating layers, making the new series (Cn) 2 (3AMP)[PbI 4 ] 2 . The crystallization of these materials was optimized through careful temperature control to obtain precise crystal structures via single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) which confirmed the presence of the two cations in distinct layers. The influence of the two spacers on optical properties including the band gaps and photoluminescence spectra are found to more closely resemble (3AMP)PbI 4 than (Cn) 2 PbI 4 , which can be attributed to the amount of distortion imposed by the 3AMP spacer on the lead iodide layers. The findings are supported by density functional theory calculations. The strong photoelectric response of solution-processed thin films shows the potential of these materials in photodetectors or photovoltaics. This unprecedented amalgamation of RP–DJ in (Cn) 2 (3AMP)[PbI 4 ] 2 in a structurally ordered fashion suggests a potential vastly underexplored phase space of 2D perovskites in which there are chemically different spacers in distinct layers of the structure, providing an additional parameter to tune perovskite properties.

Test of the Dynamic-Domain and Critical Scattering Hypotheses in Cubic Methylammonium Lead Triiodide

We investigate the hypothesis of dynamic tetragonal domains occurring in cubic CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 using high-resolution neutron spectroscopy to study a fully deuterated single crystal. The R-point scattering above the 327.5 K cubic-tetragonal phase transition is always resolution limited in energy and therefore inconsistent with dynamic-domain predictions. This behavior is instead consistent with the central peak phenomenon observed in other perovskites. Here, the scattering may originate from small, static, tetragonal-phase domains nucleating about crystal defects, and the temperature dependence demonstrates the transition is first order.

Vacancy-Dependent Diffusion Mechanism in Oxygen-Defective SrFeO 3 Perovskite Materials: First-Principles Density Functional Theory and Experimental Approach

Understanding oxygen diffusion at the atomic scale in SrFeO 3−δ perovskites is crucial for developing oxygen storage materials with optimal performance. Such materials are required to have high stability, corrosion resistance, and acceptable oxygen storage capacity at moderate operating temperatures and pressures. Here, in this study, we used first-principles density functional theory and thermogravimetric analysis to study the vacancy-dependent oxygen diffusion in oxygen-deficient SrFeO 3−δ (δ = 0, 0.065, 0.125, 0.25, 0.5) perovskites. The electronic structures, including the partial- and spin-resolved density of states, for different SrFeO 3−δ phases were calculated and compared with available experimental and theoretical results. By mapping the migration pathways, we investigated diffusion mechanisms and calculated the energy barriers for oxygen diffusion in cubic, orthorhombic, and brownmillerite phases of SrFeO 3−δ perovskites. Using the calculated energy barriers, we deduced the diffusion time scales and diffusion coefficients within SrFeO 3−δ . A diffusion coefficient on the order of 10 –8 m 2 /s was obtained for SrFeO 2.875 . We experimentally investigated the roles of temperature and oxygen partial pressures on the redox kinetics and deduced the kinetics rate and diffusion density, which agreed well with the calculated values for the density of diffusing oxygen vacancy in the lattice. Our results showed that the energy barrier tends to reduce at higher oxygen concentrations. Our results serve as an important guideline for designing oxygen storage materials with optimal redox kinetics.

Solvent-mediated carboxylic acid diammonium spacer for synthesizing FA-based 2D Dion–Jacobson perovskites toward efficient solar cells

Two-dimensional (2D) perovskites are promising for photovoltaic applications due to their outstanding optical properties and better environmental stability compared to three-dimensional (3D) perovskites. Unlike 2D Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) perovskites, which use monovalent ammonium spacers, Dion–Jacobson (DJ) perovskites employ divalent organic spacers that enhance structural stability by mitigating weak van der Waals interactions. However, the random phase distribution and disorder crystal orientation in 2D DJ perovskites create deep quantum wells, hindering charge transfer and reducing short-circuit current density (J SC ) and overall photovoltaic performance. This study introduces an organic diammonium, 1,4-butanediamine diacetate (BDAAc 2 ), to replace the traditional halide spacer 1,4-butanediamine iodide (BDADI 2 ). This substitution regulates perovskites crystallization dynamics, reducing compositional disorder and random phase distribution, thus improving the quality of the perovskite films. The robust coordination interactions between BDAAc 2 and the perovskite inorganic framework lead to an ordered [PbX 6 ] 4− arrangement, suppressing the formation of complex intermediate phases and significantly enhancing δ phase crystallinity in the intermediate film. This results in a high yield of high-quality α phase. Consequently, the resulting 2D DJ perovskite solar cells based on BDAFA 3 Pb 4 (I 0.9 Br 0.1 ) 13 achieve a higher power conversion efficiency of 16.41% and an elevated J SC of 20.46 mA cm −2 .
