Vacuum-stripped silicone binder for thermal-control paint

Silicone elastomer is placed in evacuating system, heated to 160 C and held at this temperature for 24 hours. Elastomer is then cooled to room temperature in vacuum, producing upgraded, low outgassing polymer of increased molecular weight.

Phase change paint tests to investigate effects of TPS tiles on heating rates of the Rockwell space shuttle orbiter (test OH4C, model 21-0)

Information and data from wind tunnel tests conducted on 0.0175-scale models of the space shuttle orbiter are presented. The primary objective of the tests was to evaluate aerodynamic heating effects of the tiles in the thermal protection system (TPS). Tile gap depth and flow orientation effects on the TPS were investigated. Tile patterns were cut into the undersides of the orbiter models to simulate the gaps. One model was left smooth for comparison.

Paint-Bonding Improvement for 2219 Aluminum Alloy

Bonding of adhesives and primers to 2219 aluminum alloy improved by delaying rinse step in surface-treatment process. Delaying rinse allows formation of rougher surface for stronger bonding and greater oxide buildup.

Evaluation of metallized paint coatings for composite spacecraft structures

The extreme temperature excursions of composite spacecraft structures in LEO must be minimized through the use of thermal-control coatings. Attention is presently given to tests of silicone resin coatings which were pigmented with either leafing aluminum or combinations of leafing aluminum with silicate-treated zinc oxide pigment. Atomic oxygen, UV/vacuum, and outgassing screening tests were conducted on several such coating formulations in order to characterize the performance characteristics of this coating concept. Performance was found to depend on pigment volume concentration.

Temperature-indicating Paints

This report is an attempt at a new method of coating the surface of the cylinder with materials that undergo chemical change at definite temperatures as indicated by a change in color. In this way it was hoped that the substance itself would indicate directly the position of its isotherms, which in measurements with thermocouples requires a tedious amount of labor.

Replacement of corrosion protection chromate primers and paints used in cryogenic applications on the Space Shuttle with wire arc sprayed aluminum coatings

With the advent of new environmental laws restricting volatile organic compounds and hexavalent chrome emissions, 'environmentally safe' thermal spray coatings are being developed to replace the traditional corrosion protection chromate primers. A wire arc sprayed aluminum coating is being developed for corrosion protection of low pressure liquid hydrogen carrying ducts on the Space Shuttle Main Engine. Currently, this hardware utilizes a chromate primer to provide protection against corrosion pitting and stress corrosion cracking induced by the cryogenic operating environment. The wire are sprayed aluminum coating has been found to have good potential to provide corrosion protection for flight hardware in cryogenic applications. The coating development, adhesion test, corrosion test and cryogenic flexibility test results will be presented.

Bicarbonate of soda paint stripping process validation and material characterization

The Aircraft Production Division at San Antonio Air Logistics Center has conducted extensive investigation into the replacement of hazardous chemicals in aircraft component cleaning, degreasing, and depainting. One of the most viable solutions is process substitution utilizing abrasive techniques. SA-ALC has incorporated the use of Bicarbonate of Soda Blasting as one such substitution. Previous utilization of methylene chloride based chemical strippers and carbon removal agents has been replaced by a walk-in blast booth in which we remove carbon from engine nozzles and various gas turbine engine parts, depaint cowlings, and perform various other functions on a variety of parts. Prior to implementation of this new process, validation of the process was performed, and materials and waste stream characterization studies were conducted. These characterization studies examined the effects of the blasting process on the integrity of the thin-skinned aluminum substrates, the effects of the process on both air emissions and effluent disposal, and the effects on the personnel exposed to the process.

Paint and Shoot

Through an initial SBIR contract with Langley Research Center, Stress Photonics, Inc. was able to successfully market their thermal strain measurement device, known as the Delta Therm 1000. The company was able to further its research on structural integrity analysis by signing another contract with Langley, this time a STTR contract, to develop its polariscope stress technology. Their commercial polariscope, the GFP 1000, involves a single rotating optical element and a digital camera for full-field image acquisition. The digital camera allows automated data to be acquired quickly and efficiently. Software analysis presents the data in an easy to interpret image format, depicting the magnitude of the shear strains and the directions of the principal strains.

Painting Analysis of Chromosome Aberrations Induced by Energetic Heavy Ions in Human Cells

FISH, mFISH, mBAND, telomere and centromere probes have been used to study chromosome aberrations induced in human cells exposed to low-and high-LET radiation in vitro. High-LET induced damages are mostly a single track effect. Unrejoined chromosome breaks (incomplete exchanges) and complex type aberrations were higher for high-LET. Biosignatures may depend on the method the samples are collected. Recent mBAND analysis has revealed more information about the nature of intra-chromosome exchanges. Whether space flight/microgravity affects radiation-induced chromosome aberration frequencies is still an open question.

Painting Analysis of Chromosome Aberrations Induced by Energetic Heavy Ions in Human Cells

This viewgraph presentation reviews some of the techniques used to analyze the damage done to chromosome from ion radiation. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), mFISH, mBAND, telomere and centromereprobes have been used to study chromosome aberrations induced in human cells exposed to low-and high-LET radiation in vitro. There is some comparison of the different results from the various techniques. The results of the study are summarized.
