Open Source Modeling for Power Systems Dynamics

Time-domain simulations for power systems (both phasor and electromagnetic transients) are mostly dominated by commercial tools, such as PSS/E or PSCAD. However, with the increasing penetration of inverter-based resources and changes in model paradigm, new open-source tools are looking into become a possible alternative for a range of stakeholders. In this presentation we will focus on how to improve communication with industry and other stakeholders to properly showcase the value of open source simulators. Participants will identify current barriers facing the adoption of open-source time-domain tools, and will discuss how to improve the bench-marking processes across different tools, while maintaining software modularity to include new features and models as new challenges continue to happen in energy systems.

Numerical Analysis of Water Harvesting from Saturated Vapor with the Electrospray Water Droplet Injection in The Solar-Driven Desalination Applications

Solar-driven seawater desalination systems provide freshwater through environmentally friendly and carbon-neutral processes. Air humidification and dehumidification desalination (HDD) systems extract water directly from moist air. This paper focuses on a new solar-driven seawater desalination system that shares some common traits with HDD systems but in which the air is eliminated from the process. Seawater is vaporized by solar thermal radiation in high-performance solar panels. Water vapor flows to a new electro-condensation chamber and passes through a series of electrosprays, which inject small nuclei of freshwater droplets into the vapor clouds. Here, due to dielectrophoresis and electrohydrodynamic flows, the vapor molecules are captured by the charged droplets, and vapor is condensed at the droplet surface. The water vapor condensation was modeled by using the multiphase flow numerical model. The CFD model, which was also experimentally validated, used SprayFoam solver modules available in the Open FOAM® CFD open-source software. In preliminary results, 802 grams/(hr-m2) (grams per hour per unit area) of water was harvested directly from moist air at 24C and 90% relative humidity. The simulation results indicated that freshwater productivity could increase up to 4,000 grams/(hr-m2) for fully saturated air conditions. This represents about 5 times the water productivity rate of current conventional HDD systems today. In addition, energy consumption could be reduced by 80 percent compared to conventional HDD systems.

MISPR : an open-source package for high-throughput multiscale molecular simulations

Computational tools provide a unique opportunity to study and design optimal materials by enhancing our ability to comprehend the connections between their atomistic structure and functional properties. However, designing materials with tailored functionalities is complicated due to the necessity to integrate various computational-chemistry software (not necessarily compatible with one another), the heterogeneous nature of the generated data, and the need to explore vast chemical and parameter spaces. The latter is especially important to avoid bias in scattered data points-based models and derive statistical trends only accessible by systematic datasets. Here, we introduce a robust high-throughput multi-scale computational infrastructure coined MISPR (Materials Informatics for Structure–Property Relationships) that seamlessly integrates classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations with density functional theory (DFT). By enabling high-performance data analytics and coupling between different methods and scales, MISPR addresses critical challenges arising from the needs of automated workflow management and data provenance recording. The major features of MISPR include automated DFT and MD simulations, error handling, derivation of molecular and ensemble properties, and creation of output databases that organize results from individual calculations to enable reproducibility and transparency. In this work, we describe fully automated DFT workflows implemented in MISPR to compute various properties such as nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shift, binding energy, bond dissociation energy, and redox potential with support for multiple methods such as electron transfer and proton-coupled electron transfer reactions. The infrastructure also enables the characterization of large-scale ensemble properties by providing MD workflows that calculate a wide range of structural and dynamical properties in liquid solutions. MISPR employs the methodologies of materials informatics to facilitate understanding and prediction of phenomenological structure–property relationships, which are crucial to designing novel optimal materials for numerous scientific applications and engineering technologies.

Fast Linearized Coronagraph Optimizer (FALCO) I: A Software Toolbox for Rapid Coronagraphic Design and Wavefront Correction

The Fast Linearized Coronagraph Optimizer (FALCO) is an open-source toolbox of routines for coronagraphic focal plane wavefront correction. The goal of FALCO is to provide a free, modular framework for the simulation or testbed operation of several common types of coronagraphs. FALCO includes routines for pair-wise probing estimation of the complex electric field and Electric Field Conjugation (EFC) control, and we ask the community to contribute other wavefront correction algorithms. FALCO utilizes and builds upon PROPER, an established optical propagation library. The key innovation in FALCO is the rapid computation of the linearized response matrix for each deformable mirror (DM), which facilitates re-linearization after each control step for faster DM-integrated coronagraph design and wavefront correction experiments. FALCO is freely available as source code in MATLAB at github.com/ajeldorado/falco-matlab and will be available later this year in Python 3 at github.com/ajeldorado/falco-python.

Continuous Integration, In-Code Documentation, and Automation for Nuclear Quality Assurance Conformance

The Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) is an open-source, finite element framework for solving highly coupled sets of nonlinear equations. The development of the framework and applications occurs concurrently using an agile, continuous-integration software package. Included in the framework is an in-code, extensible documentation system. Using these two tools in union with the repository management tools GitHub and GitLab, a software quality plan was created and followed such that MOOSE and a MOOSE-based application (BISON) have been shown to meet the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ Nuclear Quality Assurance-1 standard. The approach relies heavily on automation for both testing and documentation. The resulting effort demonstrates that a rigorous software quality plan may be implemented that incurs a minimal impact on day-to-day development of the software, satisfying the stringent guidelines necessary to operate the software in a safety function within a nuclear facility.

Modeling for Ultrasonic Health Monitoring of Foams with Embedded Sensors

In this report analytical and numerical methods are proposed to estimate the effective elastic properties of regular and random open-cell foams. The methods are based on the principle of minimum energy and on structural beam models. The analytical solutions are obtained using symbolic processing software. The microstructure of the random foam is simulated using Voronoi tessellation together with a rate-dependent random close-packing algorithm. The statistics of the geometrical properties of random foams corresponding to different packing fractions have been studied. The effects of the packing fraction on elastic properties of the foams have been investigated by decomposing the compliance into bending and axial compliance components. It is shown that the bending compliance increases and the axial compliance decreases when the packing fraction increases. Keywords: Foam; Elastic properties; Finite element; Randomness

Fully Implicit Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis of the ARC-Class Vacuum Vessel

The coupled simulation of fusion reactor blankets including neutronics, thermal-hydraulics and thermo-mechanics is expected to speed up the design cycle of fusion reactor design concepts. In this work we demonstrate tight implicit coupling of conjugate heat transfer using the open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics software OpenFOAM for thermo-fluid mechanics and Diablo for thermo-solid mechanics. The heat transfer analysis is augmented by volumetric energy deposition from neutronic calculations using the Monte Carlo N-particle code on both solid and fluid parts of the vacuum vessel. An additional heat flux is imposed on the first wall estimated from the design power of the reactor. The tight coupling is realized through the open-source coupling library, preCICE, and tested on the vacuum vessel of the affordable, robust, compact reactor design by Commonwealth Fusion Systems. The features of the coupling and the influence of different coupling parameters such as coupling schemes, acceleration techniques and convergence criterion are discussed. The coupled simulation results are compared to a thermal-hydraulics simulation which includes only the fluid domains (the liquid immersion molten salt blanket and cooling channel) to demonstrate usefulness of a coupled simulation. Further analysis is performed to identify regions of hot spots for subsequent design improvement. This introduces the outline for integrating conjugate electromagnetics and fluid/solid mechanics (e.g., allow for deformation of the cooling channel walls) with our present approach for future analysis.

This work presents a novel Python-based framework, geoPFA, for conducting 3D play fairway analysis (PFA) tailored to superhot geothermal systems. The workflow has been applied to the Nesjavellir field in Iceland, a candidate site for the third Iceland Deep Drilling Project's superhot production scenarios. This application demonstrates the value of modular, transparent, and extensible workflows for integrating geological, geophysical, and simulation-derived datasets in high-enthalpy environments. Preliminary results indicate favorable zones consistent with known hydrothermal activity. The geoPFA library will soon be publicly available, offering a scalable and reproducible approach to geothermal exploration across varied geological contexts.
